  1. I had my sleeve done in 2013 also and just had revision surgery in August this year. Reason for revision was inflamed esophagus and acid reflux caused with and without eating. I almost died during surgery as my BP dropped into the 50s and went into OR again for internal bleeding. I spent 5 days in ICU. Recovery has been a struggle and I have not returned to work yet. I am still having trouble with my levels and go back to the doctor next week. After my bloodwork results, I am concerned with my frequent diarrhea and pale stool. The gas I’m experiencing is beyond embarrassing!!!
  2. Hell I was sleeved in 2013 I have been suffering from some severe acid reflex. I doctor said that people that suffer from acid reflex that the sleeve isn’t a good option. I am going to do a revision. Which anyone went from sleeve to bypass? Any advice? I’m nervous about the bypass. I am not sure what to expect.
  3. Hello everyone! how are you? I had my endoscopic over stich RNY Revision on 10/15/2019. I weighed 290lbs on the day of procedure and I now weigh 277lbs. I'm on 6 weeks of liquids (shakes) and then afterwards I can progress onto soft foods, etc. has anyone else had this procedure done as well? If so how's it going for you? any updates?

    Confused...

I felt the same way about sugar and dumping. Sugar is not something I should ever eat again, so why not seal the deal with bypass? No way I want to ever experience dumping!
  5. Just got my insurance approval this week for the revision from sleeve to bypass for GERD. Super nervous on how this will go. Although I know what the recovery is like with the sleeve and the post-op diet etc., I’m just not sure that knowing all that I will have to go through again is helpful in calming my anxiety about the surgery. When I originally did this in 2014 my circumstances were different. I was single, living in California and my family was nearby. Now I live in Boston, I’m engaged and my family is 3k miles away. I’m nervous about the recovery and being sick & in so much pain in front of my fiancé. I’m just hoping that going through this again will get rid of the severe GERD. Anyone else experience anxiety about revision or have any suggestions? Thanks

Hi, K. Lee, and welcome. Do lots of reading and educate yourself. I chose bypass because I had GERD, and I know I'm crazy, but I'm a recovering sugar addict, and wanted the fear of dumping that comes with bypass!! I'm very happy with my choice. Diabetes is gone, high blood pressure gone, knees feel better, etc. Of course the same would hold true if I'd had the sleeve, I'm just happy I had bariatric surgery!! 10. Hi I had my Gastric Bypass surgery on 08.08.19, I wasn't nervous about it but excited to finally be getting it done. Hospital was fine, walked into my operating theatre and met the army of doctors and nurses, it was all very relaxed, music playing in the background, my surgeon came over and spoke to me and then the Anaesthetist came and told me what was happening and that was it, I was probably only in there for a few minutes before going to sleep. The surgery went well, I actually felt very well after surgery and went home after only spending 2 days and 1 night, I didn't feel much pain at all, it was a little uncomfortable and had to watch how I stood up or got on and off the bed etc but nothing out of the ordinary and what you would expect after surgery. Sleep as much as you can when you come home and walk when you're awake. The pain after surgery was totally bearable, while in hospital they gave me Oramorph which was fabulous and then told me to take pain meds for the next week, I actually stopped them after 2 days, didn't feel like I needed them, but everyone is different. With regards to your food intake what I would say is follow the plan with food, don't rush any of the stages, I didn't push how much I ate as I was scared that I may stretch my pouch (even though have been told this would be very hard to do) or something worse. You will know when you have had enough, it's a different kind of full, it's not in your stomach, you feel full in your chest/throat (hard to explain) but literally you will feel like you cannot get anything else down. You will learn to stop before you get to this stage as its uncomfortable. If it does happen lay down until it passes. I found it difficult eating if I was bent over, you need to be upright for the food to pass. The eating phases that you will go through become very tedious and you really want to rush through them but don't, these are what help you heal better and quicker, I know for myself after being on the milk diet for 2 weeks pre op all I wanted was some' normality' but you actually don't feel like eating much. Im now 10 weeks post op and can eat 'normal' food but in very small quantities. I had a follow up last week with the hospital and had been feeling very nauseous, this is apparently very common, I was prescribed anti sickness meds which have stopped it now. My nurse told me that it's better to eat 5-6 small portions every 3-4 hours when feeling like this, which I have started doing and the sickness has gone. I have tried different foods and some have not agreed with me so I know not to eat them again just yet. You have to adjust to your boundaries and what you can and can't eat anymore. If you're having the Gastric Bypass, which is what I had you have no cravings and you don't get any hunger pains, this was the first thing that I noticed after the surgery. I was told that I wouldn't feel hungry but as someone that has had a weight problem most of my life it was hard to believe this but it's 100% true, I love the fact that I don't get hungry but this you also have to pay attention to and make sure that you eat enough protein otherwise the day goes by and you realise that you haven't eaten, especially if you have a busy or demanding job. I get mine from High protein Greek yogurts, eggs, chicken, high protein peanut butter. I eat very low carbs and fats. On the 2nd phase i started drinking protein shakes, I hated them but they were so high in protein that at least i knew i was getting enough, try mixing with milk if too thick. The hardest part for me is not being able to drink much and not drink while eating, this is what I find the biggest challenge is getting the fluids in but I think most people will tell you this, it's important to keep your water bottle near and constantly sip all day, try adding some 'no sugar' lemon or blackcurrant, this helped me. I still don't think that hospitals give you enough information regarding eating after surgery and most of what I have done has been through my own research, have bought a few Bariatric cookbooks to help too You will be fine, just follow the doctors orders, good luck for Monday

DRIVING POST OP - what did you do??

That's great did you have bypass though

  14. Hello- I will TRY to make this short: I had vsg June 2016-I initially went from 229 to 160ish then got pregnant a year later. 3-4 months postpartum I was at 143 (I tend to loose weight during my pregnancies and loose after) but that only lasted a few months. Fast forward to today, I am at 185!!! I am only about 45 lbs from starting weight....that's scares me, I don't feel well physically...emotional, as I am back to carrying all of this weight around. I had an appt with my surgeon almost 2 months ago and I explained to her and the nurse that I am always hungry. I STILL focus on protein,....my diet is mainly protein but I also make sure I get my veggies in. I was referred to the nutritionist I saw before my surgery. I am puzzled by that because my issues are not what I eat, ive gathered the info I need prior to my surgery. Prior to surgery I had NO comorbidities. Now, I am on medication for blood pressure, and my recent blood test show that my cholesterol is high...first time ever....this is not how this experience was supposed to pan out. The point of my post is, I've done research and want to know if I would be a good candidate for a revision. The revision I am looking at is sleeve to Duodenal switch which I know was originally a part of the sleeve procedure. Just wondering for those of you who have had revision, how exactly did the conversation with your Dr start. Did you have to ask about it or did the Dr tell you it was an option? I have an appt coming up on 11/11. When i made the appt I asked if I could possibly have a scan to see if the size in my stomach have even changed. I was told most like they would not do a scan because YES the stomach does naturally increase in size about 2 yrs after vsg. Now what??
  15. I love reading posts like this one where someone getting WLS is truly excited about it. It's infectious, and it certainly makes my decision to revise feel better. So keep 'em coming, peeps!

    carbonated drinks?

When I got my lap band I went 3 years without touching a soda. But then I discovered if I poured it waaaay up high over my glass most of the fizz came out of it and I started drinking it again. I'm having issues with my band, but a barium swallow shows no slippage or stretching of my pouch. I've always contended that you'll burp out all the excess gas before you'll stretch your pouch, and it appears that it was true in my case, but as Briswife15 sez-YMMV. See what your surgeon recommends. Now hopefully soon I will be getting a revision from a lap band to a RNY and if the surgeon says "no fizz" I will drop it in a New York Minute!

    Confused...

Why are you getting bypass, Mikeyy?
  20. I had my original surgery Gastric Bypass in 2008 and it was successful, I went from weighing 345 to 190lbs, through the course of 10+ yrs I’ve had 3 children and gained weight, I went for the revision last week, from what I was told I won’t loose as much weight as when I got my original surgery... but everyone is different so I’m hopeful. surgery was Oct 16 and I went in weighing in at 237lbs as of today I’m 228... so it’s working wonderfully and I’m feeling better.

    Confused...

One factor is GERD which can be greatly improved by gastric bypass, but made worse with the sleeve. If GERD is already an issue, then it seems like an easy decision to have the bypass.
  23. Omg can't believe it 4 more sleeps and I'll be off to hospital to have the RNY BYPASS surgery. Just hit 260 today so that's 60lbs down with 70-80 left to my end goal I'll be happy to get under 200 but I think 180-190 will be perfect for me Been through a lot over the past 12 months but finally getting to the end and then to start the next chapter!!! just felt like sharing my positivity!! thank you all. MIKEY x
  24. Hi! I initially wanted to have the sleeve, but... the NP convinced me to choose a RNY because of 2 things: 1. A LOT of people who never had reflux develop reflux with the sleeve & gastric erosion of the esophagus is not a good thing, Proton Pump Inhibitors are not healthy to be taking long term for other reasons... but you will prob be on them long term 2. With me she said I have metabolic syndrome and more weight loss would be beneficial for me in the long run for preventing diabetes- I have “pre-diabetes” now. For comparison to you... I’m 5’5” and 334 pounds at my consult appt. Also through my own research, over time as the percentage of sleeve surgeries went up, so did the number of WLS revisions. And I know correlation is not causation, but my guess is a lot of those sleeves were revised to RNYs. She did tell me that it was my choice. So do your research and ask your Dr questions as needed. Good luck!

    tropical smoothie sadness

No more juice!!!! Eat the real food. Juices are just loaded with sugar and as a bypass patient, you just can't do that. That little bit of kale didn't off set all the fruit. A little fruit (berries) in a smoothie that YOU make is fine, because you will be adding a scoop of protein powder to slow down absorption. Like MIZ60, my tummy hurts just thinking of it.
