and they cover revisions. band to sleeve -
Hi Everyone! First - thank you all for your responses on my previous posts.. everyone has been so reassuring. Much to my surprise I feel like I need even more support going through a Band to sleeve revision (6/24/14) than when I was originally banded. I think part of it is having to go through some of these beginning stages all over again, partly fear of failure, partly dealing with increased physical pain and longer recovery time. Frankly, it's been much more emotional than I anticipated. I've been having internal dialogue with myself that the pain will subside, the scars will minimize and the swelling will go down and its normal to miss food. I can have these logical conversations but yesterday I had an emotional breakdown after taking a long look at myself in the mirror. Now mind you I'm not one to feel sorry for myself nor throw a pity party but this is the most significant surgery I've had in my life to date and so the healing time is all new to me.. Yesterday I felt like Frankenstein with all the cuts, bruises and swelling..I was feeling tired and overwhelmed..luckily my husband is a great support. Having all this time to be home and think is playing tricks on me but I know this too shall pass.. How long did it take for your stomach bruising and swelling take to go away?

What made you decide to switch from the band to the sleeve?
ButterflyBandita?? replied to Becca's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Oh no, you're not the only one. I was banded in January and have lost just over 15 lbs. I am supposed to have 10.2 in my band, but actually only have 8.8. So either I have a leak or . . . I just had an upper GI and everything looks great! It just isn't working for me. I'm either PB-ing all of my food, or everything is sliding right down. Not what I was hoping for. And guess what? I'm getting a revision on Tuesday the 19th. I'm tired of this thing! I thought I was crazy for even considering it when I first started investigating in June, but the more I researched, the more I just want this damn band out! -
Thinking about the sleeve
SpaceDust replied to Blowout's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I doubt you'll find many, if anyone, on this site who thinks the band is a better option - too many of the people here are having band to sleeve revisions because the band isn't doing the job or is causing problems in the long run. Could you stretch your sleeve? Yes, of course, if you constantly push your sleeve past its limit it's possible to stretch it. The good news is that it isn't as easy or quick to stretch as the pouches you get from a band or from a gastric bypass. The reason is that the stretchiest part of the stomach, the fundus, is removed during a sleeve surgery, but is part of the pouch created for either the band or the gastric bypass. Your sleeve WILL relax to some degree as you get further out, as well. It will never be as big as it was before, but you may find you go from a sleeve that holds 1/4-1/2 cup to a sleeve that holds 1.5 cups, perhaps, which is still a pretty small amount of food! You should take supplements for life - although the sleeve isn't a malabsorptive procedure like the gastric bypass, it still impacts your ability to get all your nutrition needs via food because the volume of food you can eat is so much smaller. Some do manage to get all their nutrition needs from food, but it requires the kind of focused planning that most of us would find difficult to do in the long run. As far as risks, yes., there are risks. You can develop a leak, which can be a life-threatening situation. Like other surgeries, there are infections possible. You could develop a stricture, which is a sort of blockage that makes it difficult for food to move through your system and may require additional procedures. There are other risks that your surgeon will make sure you're aware of and sign off on before you will get the surgery. The good news is that the risk factor is pretty low. I don't remember the exact numbers right now, but you have a better chance of dying in a car wreck than dying from this surgery, for example. If you do a search for sleeve gastrectomy on the web, you'll find more information than you know what to do with about the surgery and its risks, plus YouTube videos of the surgery itself if you really want to know! I'm six days out right now. No regrets for me so far. It's not uncommon to feel a little regret in the first few weeks and months, but the majority of people seem to decide it was worth it in the long run. Good luck on your decision-making process! -
What made you decide to switch from the band to the sleeve?

Hello my name is Sasha, and iam going from band to sleeve on Nov 2 . I had a lapband done done 2yrs ago and had weekly complications until my dr. deceided to do a revision and i cant wait i have been with out a fill for about 5 months and has gained about 20 lbs im doing pre op testing now so keep me in your prayers... -
I tried cheese slice today, this was a transition food for me a week ago. My lunch slice was ok but dinner was a no go, right back up. I can say this much. I've lost interest in eating. Going back to Fluid and waiting a week to try food again. I believe I need to eat small, 2T meals seem to be my solid food limit. I chew, its not my problem. I can feel it block me up as just my syliva sends me running to vomit. Funny, I had this for years and my revision was supposed to stop it. Ah feeling sorry for my self... I'll give it a week and try to revisit food. I'm going to listen to my body. I'm eating from my allowed foods. I'm chewing, I'm taking pea sized bites and I'm taking my time. I'm just not ready for solids. When I am, I'm going smaller and more frequent. I am finding this harder then I want to admit. Sorry I'm posting so much, I'm a little lost right now.

Awesome thus far! It's exciting when we come to terms to have weight loss surgery because it's not easy. In my case I am revision patient from and gastric bypass to DS. My bypass was done in 6/06 and I was pregnant in 2/07 I gained 42lbs back got pregnant again so that was a total of 4 can sections , gallbladder removal and a spinal fusion. My starting weight was 219 day of surgery today I am 211 I really have NO PAIN I walked every hour 10 times in the hospital and drank water which help with my bowl movement the second day and release of gas as well so the pca was gone that day I only had liquid pain meds. I also had so much scar tissue that more of my intestine had to be removed because it was attached to my abdominal wall. I am having problems with room temperature and cold water and suggestions

PROJECT LAST CHANCE! 3rd Bariatric Surgery Scheduled...Sleeve to RNY Anyone?
ncgirl77 replied to ellie123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
OMG - thank you so much for posting this!! I, too, have been combing the forums for some info on this and have found zip! I had the sleeve 4 years ago in Cancun and lost 87# with it (297 SW), only to gain back 50#. I'm devastated and ashamed. I am going to a new surgeon on 9/5 to talk about a revision to RNY as I feel that is my only hope to fix this failure. I feel hungry all the time and, while I do not each large volumes like I did before my sleeve, I'm still gaining. I travel often and am usually taking clients out to dinner, so that doesn't help (we have very similar situations). I am so excited to hear you are getting this done and I pray it is wildly successful for you. Thankfully you have a supporting husband and you will have support here I'm cheering for you and hope to follow in your footsteps shortly. Please keep us updated! -
Hello All, I’m have a revision from Gastric Sleeve to Gastric Bypass on August 16… I’m nervous and excited at the same time. How are you all feeling? I had the Gastric Sleeve 9/2015 SW 347 LW 239. Now I’m having a revision due to GERD and regain. CW 299… the first time around I didn’t follow-up with my doctor after having complications with GERD early on. I’m so looking forward to doing things the right way this time! Who’s having their revision in August? Also, what are some mistakes you all made that you plan to do differently this time?

What made you decide to switch from the band to the sleeve?
Becca replied to Becca's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks for the responses. I am planning on having the revision surgery. Right now, I am just doing the all the preop testing the insurance requires. I have serious problems with my band, so my doctor is pretty certain I will be approved. What I meant by being judged is people asking, "Why don't you just take your band out and do Weight Watchers, Quick Weight Loss, or get a personal trainer?" Ummmm....if that worked I wouldn't have had the band to begin with! They don't understand the battle I have had with my weight since Kindergarten. Any time I have lost the weight, I never kept it off. I have even regained 25 pounds with the band that I lost the first year. It just helps to hear what others have experienced, as I don't know anyone personally who has been through this. The only friend I know with a lapband did very well and has kept her restriction. I am so happy for her, but I know that will never happen for me with the band. Thanks again everyone! I really do love this forum! -
The stigma of Cosmetic Surgery
Cazzy replied to Pastor Chuck Cody's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I lost over 230 lbs and being 58 yrs old I had more skin than I care to remember, I had a full abdominoplasty 360 degrees , arms done, inner thighs lifted, now I am about to go into hospital for my final surgery of a breast lift. So far I have 18 hours of surgery with a possible 5 hours this next one, as I have some small revisions to do from previous operations too. If someone had said to me 3 yrs ago would u ever have plastic Surgery I would have said no but I see this as just surgery, it's not for cosmetic reasons, I feel it's all a medical need, my life is impacted by saggy skin and therefore I want it gone. Saggy skin is more or less inevitable with this much weight loss. What would I do if I couldn't get it removed.. Wear it like a badge of honour and be proud that u no longer fill it ! -
Outcome of what happened with surgeon today.
GeezerSue replied to raazzberry's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
First, I'm sorry that yet another one of us is having to go through this. That said, decide NOW what you are going to do NEXT about weight loss, because that might save you the time/money of a third surgery, (band in/band out/different procedure.) Some people are at a good enough place that they decide to go it alone. A couple of us had the band removed WHILE having the DS. (In my case, the surgeon's program fee is $1000 more because I'm a revision, but that's WAY cheaper than paying for a third surgery.) I think someone here has had an RnY or is thinking about it. I think there MAY be a tendency, once we decide that band IS coming out, to want it out NOW. I'm just saying that factoring in your NEXT move in weight loss, may be worthwhile. Sue -

Thank you all for your kind words and support. At this point in time I think that I am going to do the RNY. My over all health and living a longer life is more important to me at this point and I know that I would never be able to go at this on my own. So I will be making that call monday morning to the surgeons office and see about getting the ball rolling and seeing if the insurance company will pay for a revision. Keep your fingers crossed for me!! I'll keep you all posted!! Jo Ann -
Gastric Sleeve Help - Not restricting
chai20 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good afternoon all, Prior to reading further, if you are going to judge me and tell me that it's my fault and that I don't have any self control...spare yourself the time typing and just move on. I had the Gastric Band procedure in August 2013. Did ok but that last year and a half just could not find the "sweet spot" and either it was too restrictive or not restrictive enough. After numerous discussions with my surgeon, we decided that the revision from band to sleeve was the way to go. In June 2016 my Gastric Band was removed, gave my stomach a couple months to recover and in August 2016 I went in for the Gastric Sleeve procedure. I find that there is very little restriction to the amount of food or liquids I can consume. I am absolutely a "stress" eater and many times (most times) I eat whether or not I'm hungry. I was under the impression that since my stomach was going to be 1/8th the original size, that I would have NO CHOICE and be unable to eat when full. That has not happened and I'm very disappointed. I don't know if I unintentionally stretched my stomach or what. Has anyone else have these issues? Many thanks! -
Pain after revision was significantly worse than any of my other previous abdominal surgeries (myomectomy, sleeve, hysterectomy, colostomy reversal). I expected it based on the amount of scar tissue I have but it still shocked me upon waking up. Each day it gets easier. This group has really helped me this week. Any suggestions on how to get all my protein in since I’m going home soon?!

I am revising my sleeve to a DS on Feb 7th. I feel like I am going into this surgery with my eyes more open than before. that is good and bad. I know I can and will lose weight. but what if I can't keep it off? last time I maintained for years until pregnancies and miscarriages messed me up. I'm not going to have any more pregnancies, but I'm still scared. Sent from my SM-N975U using BariatricPal mobile app -

Best of luck to you. I really would like to know all about this. I’m considering the same thing. My vsg was done in 2015. I have since gained all my weight back. I’m currently on Ozempic. I’m taking it off slowly. But only 20 pounds lost so far. I inquired about the revision and am just nervous. Would love to hear all about it and what it intails as far as a hospital stay. Care afterwards and etc. -
Any Dr. Jayaseelan Sleevers?
Brad H replied to Runner1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Runner1, I am a patient of Dr. Jayaseelan. I am currently going through the approval process and have not gotten a surgery date yet. This will be a revision surgery for me, as I have recently experienced some complications with the Lap-Band (banded in 2006) and am looking forward to this alternative procedure. I will update when I know more. -

day AFTER sugery
TijuanaPlication replied to Forensikchic's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I wouldn't go for the band. Plenty of people on here have revised TO VSG FROM the band. See below for some threads on why not to have the band http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/lapband/4398937/New-here-Researching-and-Learning/#36372729 http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/4434392/amping-Band/#36664839 Revisions are more difficult and more prone to complications, so you really really need to think carefully about what WLS you choose. -

WoW, Thanks for sharing your story, I had lap band 4 years ago and have had nothing but complications. Therefore, I am having a revision and removing the band and having the sleeve done I am much more nervous almost scared yet excited for the surgery and the adventure I think I amostly afraid of failing and the biggest my addiction with food!!!Fighting "Head Hunger" LOVE...1 is too many 1000x . Also, reading the horror stories on the complications thread lol. Of course there is always risk, I'm still moving forward. I to want the best out of life for me and my future with my other half and family, life is way to short to be miserable and my first surgery was cash pay, but "You know money comes and goes no regrets just do it" a friend said as I though I would have to cash pay again lol...Great story look forward to following more post! April Update from everyone
aussiemalcolm replied to Ready2BHealthier's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Where do I start I was sleeved on April 20th took 8 hrs due to many issues found while removing my lapband, on road to recovery and it's been a great 4 weeks post op, loosing weight so fast and walking 4 miles a day now, I'm 57 pounds down now since pre op weigh in. I started out at 447 on first consult in Feb and we decided my band was to tight so in April tried to unfill it but port had fliped so Dr requested urgent repair/revision with insurance company got approval the next day and booked in 6 days later. I didn't get a chance to think about worrying it happened so fast. After 12 years of my band which worked for me for about 7 of them I was now free from it and sleeved and enjoying my new life every day so much more now as those pounds I gained come off and my new body comes to life once again. I was originally denied the revision to the sips but my doc talked to the doc at aetna and approved it after I go through the 3 month follow up with a nutritionist like I did when I was sleeved.
