I'm curious about everyone's response to this as well. I lost about 9 lbs the first week. 0 in the 2nd week. 3lbs in the 3rd week and just began my 4th. I was laying in bed super discouraged & couldn't fall asleep because I was running through everything I've consumed and my physical activity in the last 3 weeks and just feel like I should be further along.

Thinking about revision
bpathrose replied to Ms. Thompson's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I did a VSG (sleeve) in July 2012. weighed around 175 kgs then. reduced it to 120 kgs and then with further intensive training and diet, it came down to as low as 110 kgs. After that, it went up to 120 kgs which became my normal weight for years.. 10 years later, did a revisional MGB 3 weeks ago in July 2022, weighed 160 kgs on day of surgery. 148 kgs now. I had no choice. All attempts at weight loss failed miserably. It was a constant tug of war between me and weight. breathing in air seemed to increase my weight. Investment in health is the best that you can do, even if you have failed in the past. On the other side, you are more experienced now and know what went wrong the first time around. -
My iron was too high as well and I was taking 3 multi's with iron and now I only take 1 with iron and two without. It'll take a while to figure out the regimen that works for you, so just work with your doctor and get their advice on what they want you to try.

5 months post op hair loss
Arabesque replied to carolinac413's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It happens to almost everyone. Just have to ride it out until your natural hair loss cycle returns to it’s usual rate. The accelerated rate of loss is a stress response to all the changes you’re putting your body under. The hair you’re losing is dead & would have fallen out anyway - it’s just happening faster. Your new hair is still growing just at it’s usual rate. Some will swear by supplements like biotin but their hair loss slows in about the same 3 or 4 months time frame as those who don’t take or do anything. Save your money I say. Keep meeting your goals & relax - don’t add more stress. Many of us with long hair cut our hair shorter so the new growth didn’t have as much to grow to catch to the length of the remaining hair. -
I cut out a lot of sugar (real or sugar substitutes like monk fruit) from my diet & avoid as much artificial sweeteners as possible. I know there are artificial sweeteners in my yoghurt & protein bar but that’s really all & I usually keep my added sugar to around 10g or less. We all need glucose but I get the bulk of that from fruit, dairy, etc. - naturally occurring. I really embraced that period of food tasting excessively sweet period post surgery & just didn’t reintroduce sweet back into my diet. I prepare most of what I eat eat from scratch as I can control the ingredients that way. There are some exceptions like I love the crumbed lamb cutlets my butcher makes & their honey soy pork chops (I make them myself unless I’m feeling lazy). I rarely eat dessert, cakes or biscuits (except for multi grain crackers). I’ll have a small amount on certain occasions like at Christmas so only a couple of times a year. (It’s ironic really because I’m the family dessert maker.) Pre surgery, I always enjoyed something sweet after dinner & every couple of weeks I’d buy a treat or two from a local patisserie on a weekend. But I really don’t miss it now. I can think something may be delicious but aren’t really tempted to try it. But this is me. You have to find the right balance for you & of what you want or don’t want to include in your future way of eating.

I did gain about 20 lbs in year 3 post-op, but a 10-20 lb rebound weight gain after hitting your lowest weight is very common. And to be honest, I think I look better at this higher weight, even though part of me would like to get back down there again! To maintain it, I track everything I eat and try to get some exercise most days of the week. -
Congratulations! I'm exactly one week after you on 8/31 [emoji51][emoji51] Sent from my SM-A716U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

September surgery buddies!!
SpartanMaker replied to Slwhurst's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not even allowed the yogurt preop! The one thing they said I could have is one cucumber or pickle per day if I needed something to crunch. I bought a huge jar of pickles this week. 😁 -

I’m on a two week liquid diet and it’s been a killer (again! This is my second bariatric surgery.) I can have protein shakes or greek yogurt for my ‘meals’ every three hours. I would be lying if I said I had been perfect throughout this process. I’ve slipped up a few times by stealing a fry off my husbands plate or eating a couple of olives when I was simply sooo hungry. I’m going to have the hiatal hernia repair during my surgery on the 29th and the revision to RNY, as well. The GERD burns me up a lot of the time so I take esomeprazole in the morning and Pepcid in the evening. And thank goodness for Tums during the day! -
To put it simply, Ideal Bodyweight is a crock. These are all based on one of 3 things: BMI, population studies like the NHANES survey, or body fat %. None of these can tell you what YOUR ideal bodyweight should be, only what an average range of weights might be. Why? Let's look at these individually: BMI: Frankly the fact that this psuedo-science is so widely used is downright scary. This is all based on a formula created almost 200 years ago by a mathematician (not a physician), trying to determine what an "average" man would look like. It does not take into consideration muscle mass, frame size, or any thing other than height and weight. As an example of just how messed up this is, consider that some professional bodybuilders fit into the morbidly obese category even though they may only have 5-8% body fat. Population Studies: Studies that look at large populations have the same flaws in that they only look at averages. They are good for understanding population groups, but are not instructive to know what YOU should weigh. Body fat: In general, these formulas are going to be better than the above (as an example, see Gallagher et al., "Healthy percentage body fat ranges: an approach for developing guidelines based on body mass index." American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 72 (3): 694.), because they are at least based on your stats (% Body Fat), but they have 2 fatal flaws: First, they rely on BIA (Bioelectrical impedance analysis), but BIA is not that accurate overall. Second, Lean mass is also is lost as someone loses weight, but if the estimate is based on body fat alone, it will be wrong. My point is the best way to know what your ideal weight should be is based on how you feel and look once you get there. If you need a goal to shoot for, aim high when looking at ideal weight charts. If you're not happy once you get to that weight, you can always adjust downward.

I am three weeks out and have noticed that initially, my fullness came as hiccups. My doctor explained that hunger and fullness would initially appear in different ways in your body. So long as you are feeding your body, you will be fine. After surgery, your stomach will be stiff. It was cut down, so as it heals, it will be stiff. When your stomach starts to grumble, it creates stomach pains from gas. I am having this difficulty now. Gas-X remains my friend for times such as these. But, remember, don't eat to be full. Eat to be satisfied, an adjustment that will take some time to get used to. Be patient with yourself, and you will get there.

Umm yea so what happens when your Ferritin levels are too high? Do they have you stop taking your vitamins? Mine is at 583 ng/mL. Test results say this is the standard range 3 - 126 ng/mL

I have been feeling the same way lately. I suppose we're not supposed to enjoy eating anymore. It takes like 3 bites to fill my tummy. how do you enjoy that? Mindful eating doesn't help either

It still hurts to eat and drink

Yes it happens all the time. Trust the process, do what your team says and stay off the scales. Easier said than done i know. Read the back pages on here of the 3 week stall -
So much this. Even now, almost 6 weeks post surgery - sometimes I get depressed because now I only eat to fill the pouch. I don't get to eat to ENJOY food anymore. I know this is a mental thing - and part of my problems to begin with - but it's so saddening.

Choosing Surgery Date
SpartanMaker replied to FireWife81's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think it came back from insurance in a couple of weeks, but due to the backlog at the clinic, it took them about a few weeks to submit it. The biggest delay was just getting on the surgical schedule. I think they are still running at a reduced schedule due to COVID, so the delay to even get on the schedule can be a month or two. Also, based on previous experience in this area, most facilities only schedule out a couple of months at a time, so like clockwork, I got my date exactly 2 months prior. I trust the surgeon, she is very experienced, but I think the hospital and staff are just swamped with a huge backlog. -

You lost 16# in one week?? That's amazing. Losing weight is non-linear, you should expect some ups and downs. -
I’m two weeks out, and I have a couple of questions. 1. When will I start feeling full? I don’t feel full when I eat (granted I’m only on purees). 2. I have sharp pain if I have to bend over or when I sit down. It’s always in the same spot. I didn’t have this pain during the first week. Is this normal?

Choosing Surgery Date
FireWife81 replied to FireWife81's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I want to have mine done as soon as possible also. I hope it doesn't forever for my insurance to come back approved. I am hoping for a end of Sept date. My work schedule doesn't work with anything earlier than Sept 22, 2022 and I need to be back for the next rotation schedule starting Nov 3, 2022. -

My surgery was 8/3, week one post op I had a weight loss of 16 lbs. second week I was down another 1.3… making it a total of 17.3. Weighed today & I’m up 2 lbs…. Talk about discouraging… has this happened to anyone else? -
I'm so jealous!!! Let me know how your new tummy tolerates it through the day. I want to drink coffee so badly but my doc says to wait 3 months after.
-
I'm sure he has his reasons for telling you that, but my doc said no working out for 6 weeks or until she clears me. I am supposed to be walking as much as I can comfortably. I've been trying to work up to 3 miles, but I don't walk fast and I take breaks when I need to. Maybe just start with walking a comfortable distance.

Today for my morning Hot Drink I grabbed a short cappuccino. It was so good and I had no issue with my stomach after. As an avid coffee drink pre-op, and not having any caffeine for the last 2 weeks... It was the best cup of coffee I have ever had.

I watched the on line part for thr program yesterday. I have to enter my information for insurance yet. I know my insurance pays for it. I live and work in Wausau will that be difficult for this program with the UW? What impresses me is that all these departments work together. Where my friend had it done its not like that at all. That is terrific that you had it in 2015 and have kept the weight off. How did you keep focused after the surgery to not allow the weight to come back? I see what my friend is going through a little over 3 months and she is afraid to eat at times. I know everyone reacts different to foods etc. Glad to known you had the surgery at UW Madison.
