  1. I had a revision from a gastric band, not sleeve - and it is EVERYTHING I hoped for. No more gerd, fast weight loss, no hunger - seriously, I wish I had done it 5 years ago...
  2. Original thread http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/382417-4-YEARS-vsg-post-op.-revision-twisted-sleeve-to-bypass-comin-up! Sent from my Z981 using the BariatricPal App
  3. Thanks. It has been very rough. Looking forward to hopefully keeping down food after the revision. But, honestly, nervous about another surgery with more potential risks/complications. I am praying everything goes well for us both!
  4. Hi everyone, I’m having gastric bypass revision surgery on October 15th and have been doing my liquid diet. Aside from being constantly hangry which is its own version of suck I also feel like I’m in a brain fog. I feel like my brain is simply not processing things as it should. I’m also super irratible which I at least understand. The brain fog tho is really getting to me. Also for some reason I have slept through my alarm twice which I have never done before. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar. It’s making things difficult.

    I Am Officially Frustrated

Have you asked if it's possible to trade the chiro for the accu? Since he's SO certain it's the only thing that will help you? If he's so certain, he should be willing to let you try it and see if it helps. With the type of pain you're describing I can only assume exercising isn't really an option for you at this point correct? That is more than likely the issue with the stalled weight loss. Your calories in vs. calories out ratio.. you're maintaining, but as you said not gaining, which is a good thing. I'm shocked your doctor didn't suggest bypass over banding because of your condition. I have a friend with FM and everything hurts her, all the time, once she did the bypass her pain was manageable after dropping 50lbs in about 6 weeks, she was able to workout and lose. Go off pain meds, and go into "natural" pain management. Speaking of natural have you and your dr tried those types of methods? I feel your frustration through the screen and I genuinely hope your situation gets better. All the best!
  6. OOPS, I have to clarify what I wrote earlier. Billy doesn't make all his patients lose 40 pounds before surgery. He was talking about one specific patient that weighed 500 pounds or so, and the guy figured the bypass would fix him. Billy probably read a lot into the guy's personality, and the guy probably displayed signs that he wasn't willing to do any work other than lying on the operating table.

    How to deal with misinformation?

Maybe you can refer them to yesterday's t.v. program "The View". There was one bypass and one lap-band success story. The lap-bander looked better, in my opinion. Oh yes, the bypass lady mentioned that her sister had the procedure a year later and died from it. That would have been a good time to point out the benefits of the band, but, oops, out of time.
  8. There are so many factors that determine how quickly you will lose with the band. My SIL had bypass about the same time I had band surgery. I've lost more than she has. It depends on how strictly you follow your doctor's guidelines, how much you exercise, your body's metabolism, etc. You can do this. It's hard work but I have found that I appreciate things that I had to work hard for more than the things that come easily. You have probably struggled for a long time with your weight, it wouldn't be healthy to lose it too fast. As long as you are going into the process knowing that it is a process, you will be fine. There will be ups and downs, but you can handle it. Good luck to you!:frown:
  9. I completed all my testing. My last appointment with nutritionist is this month. I started in November I had a couple of health issues that needed to be addressed so I had lots of testing and doctor appointments. It has been a very long road for me. I had two doctors that were very negative about me having gastric bypass so I replaced them both with doctors that both are so very happy for me and very supportive!
  10. Look into the SIPS procedure revision. That may help and not as extreme as bypass SIPS procedure 12/11/17 SW 307 CW 226 GW 160

Hi, I am a newbie her to the forum. I was on approve on October 7th to have surgery.. My date is November the 7th.. Whoooohoooo.. Well not really.. The submitted my paper work for the bypass.. I soooo don't wanna that procedure.. I will meet with the surgeon on Monday and they will resubmit my claim... Good news you might say.. Well again, not really my insurance is in negotiating with the hospital.. Basically if the cannot come to an agreement by December insurance will not cover the procedure after Dec 9th..SUCKS RIGHT!! I know.. The forum has been so helpful and motivational.. Do you think I should go ahead with the bypass since it has already been approve or take my chances and wait to see if I get the quick approval for the sleeve? I was gonna call my coordinator and commit to the bypass, but I changed my mind.. Please help.. Send some encouragement my way... By the way I have BCBS federal..????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????. Oh I forgot to add my surgeon is booked the entire month of Nov.. Some one cancelled that's how I got my date.. Help help..
  12. Went to my consultation today. Dr said he would do whatever surgery I decided on, but he did recommend bypass surgery. I had first been interested in the sleeve....now I'm doing more research....anyone else been told this?

Surgery was in October, now I stay sick...?

My best friend is 4 year post op gastric bypass. She is having the same thing.... fever of unknown origin... they did find some kidney stones and blood in her urine but her white cells drop and she becomes anemic requiring Iron infusions. It is a mystery to the docs. She has had a million different consults. She has been worked up for leukemia... rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, lupus.... so far everything has turned up negative. I am frustrated for her because she is a single mom with a toddler and a teen and has a stressful job. I wish these docs would figure out what is going on with her already.

    Dialated esophagus

Thanks I will definetly focus on chewing more. I take a Gi on the 29tth to see if it goes down. On the 4th of Feburary I go back to my surgeon to consider next steps if it is down he said he would consider starting a slow refill or the band will have to be removed and consider a revision

    Shhh...Keep it in the Closet!?

Travel lady, have u been banded yet? I agree a sista has to take care of herself. How does the song go.. you just do u imma do me! so stick with your decision! Msnika... I am in education as well (administration) so i know as i lose weight it will be all eyes on me. I agree with the earlier post about thinking long and hard before telling. A friend of mine has the bypass and has handled it with so much class. I have told a couple of people my plans and now i am having second thoughts should i just not mention it anymore and attribute weight loss to nutrisystem:confused2: or something? Where I'm from there have been a lot of obese educators losing a lot of weight lately. They would say oh i went to la weight loss or weight watchers. it took me a minute to realize that our ins. covered gastric bypass surgery! Our ins just started covering the lap band last year.
  16. I agree with a lot of people here, I remember someone had mentioned this to a stranger, and turns out that "stranger" who was morbidly obese HAD ALREADY HAD THE BYPASS, years ago and had regained weight so you never know what is going on with someone, and you never know what your future will hold with your lap band. Also every obese person DO NOT WANT WLS, some people are not candidates for medical reasons, some people can't afford it, don't have insurance, etc. Also, OBESE PEOPLE KNOW THEY ARE FAT, no one has to tell them that, food can be a horrible addiction like drugs, and when people tell them to lose weight, sometimes the opposite can happen and they turn to food, from being hurt. Also there are MANY obese people that lose weight successfully without weight loss surgery and keep it off, and yes it can be done. I've known many that have successfully lost weight the good ole fashion way and have kept it off for many years, they changed their lifestyle joined weight watchers and exercise daily. So you can't get cocky just because you have a tool that is making it difficult for you to eat and judge others or look down on other obese people because they have not decided to do what you are doing. I agree with most here, never mention it UNLESS they ask, "hey how are you losing your weight? Then perhaps they will get inspired by your weight loss with your band, and then they can decide if the lap band is a viable option for them. Edited to Add: Also most people have a "breaking point" when they've had enough and want to do something drastic...perhaps these friends just not have reached that breaking point. A lot of people get weight loss surgery for the wrong reasons, for vanity, spouse leaves them, etc....perhaps their health is not at a critical point yet.

    Anxiety from being sick

LARA: I try to keep "normal" illness in mind and to be honest, I hoped it was sleeve not flu. Frankly, a sleeve round of ick seems to pass faster and since I was settled back down and holding Water and light foods by noon, I guess it was just a sleeve boo boo. But I'll tell you this. While I didn't eat anything "bad", this sure felt like dumping. Yes, I know we don't do that but it met every standard except possible massive sweating but I'm in that freezing mode. So I don't think it was anything serious. I did call my program and they said that if it doesn't last more than that few hours, it's probably not anything serious but your stomach fighting back. Bad day. But I am sure glad it timed out the way it did and I was at home for the worst. Thanks all for reading and offering comfort and clear minded thoughts. ***Oh, you know something funny....A friend who had gastric bypass suggested I go to a dollar store and buy several cheap large bowls for just such an occasion. That's a new thing to add to the household list for surgery prep because I was very happy with her that I followed through. Made it much easier.***

    Nov 14 Sleevers?

I had my revision surgery on 11-14-2012 after surgery they told me the band removal went fine and they were able to repair a hiatal hernia , that was a surprise to them ( and me ) and sleeve me in one procedure. I was SO relieved to have had it done in once procedure. The day after surgery I started throwing up Water and unable to keep it down . After a couple more tried they ordered an EGD for me . They told me if the scope went through easily then and showed no obstructions I should be fine and not need another surgery , but if it did not I could have excess scar tissue from the band and I could need another surgery . WHAT !! Yikes . So they did it and it showed no obstruction some swelling around the band area ( where the band was ) they told me to take liquids slow . For several days I was still throwing up just water, in fact it freaked me out because it looked like I was throwing up some blood as well. Finally around day 3 or so the water was staying down . So finally I was able to go home today . NOT an easy process that's for sure , but I am glad its over. The doc told me to progress my liquids slowly , as long as I was keeping liquids down I was fine , the minute i started if i did throwing up liquids I needed to come back . But to just take it slow . Now 10 days out and I hae had a few instances of throwing up since i got home. But I just back track and go on Clear Liquids again and It gets better. Since I was unable to eat prior to surgery due to my band i sometimes wonder if I will ever be able to eat solids again , but this HAS to be better than the band and the pain and issues i had with them .

    hi new here !

I am a band to sleeve revision. I was happy with my band for a long time and lost a good amount of weight. Then it malfunctioned after my pregnancy and never worked again. I can tell you that in my experience so far (6 years banded and now 11 weeks post sleeve) that it is much easier to eat around the band than the sleeve, and my weight loss is faster (so far at least) even though I have always been a "slow loser". I think personally that the sleeve is a better surgery. The band is safer if you are worried about major complications like leaks. But long term people seem to have more problems with the band and the most recent research I have heard indicates that more than 50% have the band removed by 5 years post op, mostly either due to slip, erosion, or inadequate weight loss. Of course, these are my opinions based on my experience and what I have heard from other band folks. The band is an attractive idea but doesn't seem to work as well in practice. Good luck to you.

    Burping

So this may seem like a strange question, but after bypass, do you still burp? Or burp less? Is it painful?
  22. Hi all I'm usually on the gastric sleeve pages but I thought I might be able to help a bit, I was a lap band to sleeve revision, the gastric sleeve is also know to cause gurd so if you suffer from that with the lap band there's a chance you might with the sleeve , do to complications my sleeve twisted and also have gurd, I'm having gastrectomy with gastrojejunostomy. On the 21st

    Desperate! Serious complication. Need advice.

It sure sounds like your body is trying to get rid of your port, and if it also goes to work on your band, your complications will get even worse. Like Carolinagirl, my life is more important than my weight loss surgery, and I'd go to the emergency room and call my bariatric surgeon immediately. Please don't think that your only choices are to live skinny with open abdominal wounds or live fat without your port and/or band. Once the port complications are dealt with, you may be able to revise to a different bariatric surgery procedure that doesn't involve implants. Good luck! Jean
  24. I had the rny gastric bypass in August of '05. Initially lost 136 pds have gained back about 15 but have also had two children and preg with a third. Wouldn't change my decision for anything. If you are a sugar junkie or carb junkie like I was the rny is the BEST SURGERY period.

    Off the Band-wagon?

There's plenty of potential issues that could happen with anything and there's always a risk any time you have a medical procedure. However, the bottom line is you have to do what's right for you. I can tell you that the majority of issues that occur come from the patient being non-compliant with post surgery instructions. Band slippage usually occurs when someone isn't eating properly or they're throwing up too much, etc... (again all signs that they're not eating properly.) These are things people won't admit to, they'll blame the surgeon, the band, etc... and while there are SOME cases of of malpractice or faulty equipment the majority of it goes back to non-compliance. Flips that's questionable, if again the patient is non-compliant with lifting restrictions, etc.. it's possible they tear or loosen their stitching during the healing time and don't see the result of it until after. Remember that 90% of the people who have the surgery have issues and problems with food and accepting responsibility for their own actions so they'll be quick to blame the band, doctors, anyone but themselves. I am 1 year and just shy of 3 months out and not a SINGLE complication. Not one. If I throw up, I KNOW it's because I ate too fast, didn't chew enough, etc... Sometimes I get stuck because I'm not open, again I know this happens at times and comes with the territory, however they tell us to sip something warm if we haven't eaten yet to open us up. So that's my issue. I researched this for 5 yrs before I did it, feeling surgery would be my absolute last resort. When I became truly informed I realized it was a tool and not a way to do it for me, unlike bypass. All that being said ultimately it's your decision. I've done it both ways, with or without the band, the difference with the band is while I haven't had a HUGE weightloss like some, I haven't gained, which is my main concern. I feel like this is one of the best things I've ever done for myself.
