  1. I'm having a revision from VSG to MGB in February. For those have done this, how does the recover differ? Were your energy levels different? I have an important test three weeks after my surgery date, which may be ill advised, but it was the only time I could get off work. After the VSG, I went back to work after one week and it was mostly ok.
  2. I am scheduled to have a Roux en y gastric bypass procedure on December 16th at 7:30am CT. I had originally wanted a gastric sleeve, but the endoscopy that I had showed that due to a condition in my esophageal flap (Hill Grade 4), that would not be possible. Anyway, I am excited and scared. My 3 week liquid liver-shrinking diet starts on Sunday, November 24th.
  3. Hello 👋🏼 so my revision surgery was on October 16/19 the night before surgery I weighed around 237lbs... almost a month out I’m 222... total loss of 15lbs... Haven’t lost anything in almost a week and I’m getting discouraged. I was told after 4 weeks I can start eating soft foods... do you guys have any recommendations? I’ve honestly been eating eggs 🥚 after I reached my 3rd week... I know I shouldn’t have but I got so tired of broth and protein shakes. I can eat 2 scrambled eggs in one day... I know that’s not much but that’s what I’ve been eating so far. I’m scared to eat mashed potatoes bc I loveeeeeee potatoes!!!! Lol ... any food ideas would be great... I get to see my nut in a week but for now I’ll take you guys suggestions thank you!

    Hunger and working out

Was this bypass or sleeve or something else? I don't have any advice, just curious to know for my own future. I know that when I would work out before surgery, I was always ravenously hungry on those days vs the days I didn't work out.

    Stinky Poop?

I had my surgery 28 years ago this Dec 12 and yes the poop smells terrible. I have been lactose intolerant since surgery but i can eat a little fat free cottage cheese and sharp cheddar but no milk. I also had osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease which my doctor feels was made worse by the gastric bypass because of nutrition deficit. I have kept off 430 pounds. I constantly deal with low energy and have since surgery. Believe it or not I had more energy at 640 pounds than I do now of course I was 21. I know that would not have lasted and I would have eventually ended up like those people on tv. I would caution anyone who thinks this surgery is a quick fix to rethink it because its not. I usually eat very lite when going on a trip so less chance of having an accident before i find a bathroom. Also eating less meat seems to help some. Good luck ladies im right their in the same boat with smelly poop.

    The Maintenance Thread

Okay so this is the way it was explained to me by my bariatric clinic: Insulin-resistance plays a HUGE part in how our metabolisms work and the longer we have disordered diets (binge/purge, or binge/crash diet, or calorie restrict/binge exercise) we mess with all of our hormones and homeostasis signals get their wires crossed and our set points keep going up,up,up, and up. WLS disrupts all of the “bad” data and our bodies “forget” the previous set point. We go into free-fall and actually start mobilizing stored fat for energy instead of our bodies storing MORE fat in response to calorie deprivation. The exact mechanism of action is unknown, but VGS and Bypass have the same effect. Sadly the phenomenon seems to stop somewhere around the 12-18 month PO mark, and then our bodies yet again start recording data and “punishing” us for bad decisions. Metabolic free-fall ends and we better be able to make good choices or else we start the vicious cycle all over again.

    Partner/ spouse support

When I got my lap band 10 years ago my husband was in good health and supportive of my decision. Now I need to revise it and he has some major health issues and I think he's afraid something will happen to me and then he won't have anyone to care for him. It's giving me some guilt, but being obese there's no assurance nothing will happen if I DON'T get the surgery. If I die from obesity issues he still doesn't have his help, so I'm going to get the bypass. Like all the other posters said in their wisdom, it's YOUR journey and you do it for you.

    The Maintenance Thread

I think it's a combination of malabsorption ending (bypass), being closer to a normal weight (when weight loss becomes a lot harder because there are only so many calories you can cut), and diet fatigue.

    The Maintenance Thread

This might be a dumb question. I’m wondering when we have the honeymoon why does it end? Is it because we are at a stable weight near our body’s ideal for awhile or is it because our body becomes more efficient at absorbing calories (for bypass). Is it because we can eat more or we start to feel hunger or a combination of things? Could it also be just the nature of getting older and our metabolism naturally slowing a bit?

Where did my menopause symptoms go?

I'm 65 and should have been through with that sh*t years ago since I had an early menopause in my early 40's. But I STILL wake up every night with hot flashes, and they aren't JUST hot flashes-they are accompanied with this weird gut squeezing sensation. I wonder what they are going to feel like after my bypass. Maybe go away?🤞

    Sleeve failure??

You guys have been very helpful. I will be the first to admit i didn't do 100% the research i did with the Band. I went in that WLS very knowledgable... This i thought i knew a lot about the sleeve but when i came back on the site and saw all the people having another WLS because the sleeve "didn't work" i started to doubt if i had made the right choice to revise to the sleeve. So i'm going to do what i know works. Eat my portions, watch what i eat and how i eat it. and exercise as much as possible.
  14. I will remember that. I'm not too nervous, but will never miss a chance for "better living through Chemistry"!😁 I totally understand that feeling of being excited and nervous at the same time. Causes "butterflies in my stomach". Wait, here's a question--if you get half your stomach removed for a sleeve, where do you feel your butterflies?? And if you get a bypass you technically have TWO stomachs-do you feel it in both, or which one??

I HATE I GOT THIS STUPID SURGERY!

@theexfatgirl - I think you may have already mentioned trying the unflavored protein powder? I apologize if you stated you had already tried it and it didn't work out. I put the unflavored protein powder into my jello and mixed it up (I was allowed jello, broth, sugar free popsicles, and the protein drinks or protein shakes I made myself. I have a bit of a lactose intolerance so was not able to make shakes with milk but I sure wish I could have! I added unflavored protein powder to my broth. I bought a variety box of protein soups from bariatric pal and in my 2nd week, I tried some of those. The one I thought would be the worst for my stomach, cream of tomato, my pouch actually liked but I figure I was just lucky. Also, I have a gastric bypass instead of a sleeve so I have no idea if that made ANY difference at all in being able to tolerate it. I think you said the protein drinks you tried were making your tummy hurt? I was just wondering about this as I have a LOT..and I mean a LOT of abdominal/intestinal cramping in general..and when added to the gas issues..I felt like my stomach..or what I 'used to call my stomach' was hurting so often! I don't know if it was because of my new 'anatomy' and plumbing, but I was given meds to help with this..cramping, spasms..and they seemed worse after drinking protein drinks (again, apologies for not knowing if it applies to both the sleeve and gastric bypass peeps) but I somehow managed to get them down...thinning them out helped a bit. I remember on Day 3 being VERY VERY DISMAYED and a bit angry that my hunger returned. Oh, I knew this was a chance BUT I was very envious of those who went months and even some...YEARS without feeling the return of hunger. I know some posters have mentioned trying to see if different temperatures help with your tummy issues. I found that oddly for me, warm things made my pouch MUCH happier than cold (and of course most protein drinks we drink are 'cold', well the pre-made ones I mean). I also used a heating pad for my abdominal area. Be KIND to yourself. You just had major surgery and your whole body is reeling from the impact as well as the anesthesia. This definitely made me grouchy..not saying it made you grouchy..LOL, just saying how I felt about it. I also had a hard time on my sibling thread although I was generally truly THRILLED for my surgery siblings....I am a slow loser and while I only had a few minor complications, I soon realized that a lot of what I was feeling was simply due to 1) Major Surgery 2) MAJOR MAJOR hormonal swings that I was warned about...3) Feeling in pain/uncomfortable 4) Wondering even with THREE years of preparing on a handful of days..if I had done the right thing. I was on liquids for over 45 days straight so I was VERY VERY frustrated with this. That being said, I only stayed down and frustrated for a few days. Don't get me wrong, I still get a bit down and frustrated but I am able to quickly step out of those feelings now that I'm over 3 months post-op. My surgeon and nutritionist were very encouraging when I was tripping out about not hitting protein goals..they told me to do the BEST I COULD in the first few weeks. I hope one of the suggestions or many of the suggestions are able to be of help to you..and of comfort. I will say my mood did a drastic pick up in weeks 3 and 4....and before I was even 1 month post-op, I was back in my secure feeling of knowing I did the right thing. For others it may take longer, but my fervent hope and wish for you is that you are able to find something soon you can handle to drink/eat and that the beautiful part of your journey starts (we often don't even know it has started until we look back in hindsight). Best wishes to you!! You CAN do this!!

    heartburn is back

I had that happen. I wondered what the heck was going on since bypass supposedly improves - if not outright cures - heartburn, and I was on omeprazole to boot. Turned out I had a stricture. Keep an eye on it. If you start vomiting stuff up, that could be what's going on. NEVER MIND. I just noticed you had your surgery a year ago. Wouldn't be a stricture. Not sure what to tell you.. my heartburn did come back about 2-3 years after surgery (after completely disappearing), but it's not as bad as it was pre-surgery. You might want to let your surgeon know just in case it's something else.

    Nervous

I am 7 weeks post op. Haven't experienced dumping yet. I have been sticking with the prescribed diet. I dont drink with my meals and I dont eat sugary foods. I'm sure there will be something in the future that causes it but i don't really think it's a common thing unless you're not eating right. I was first set for sleeve but dr talked me into bypass. He said he has to do more revisions of sleeves to bypass then any other surgery. So far so good for me. So I'm sure this will be a good decision for you as well.

ADHD and Migraine Meds After Surgery

Definitely talk to your surgeon. I am not sure how the meds will absorb but, I do know for a fact that you can’t have any nsaids after bypass surgery for life. The risk of ulcers is far too great.

Nervous about my decision to go with bypass vs sleeve. About a week away. Is dumping syndrome worth the benefit of more weight loss and less regain?
  23. Good evening. I had a RNY Gastric Bypass 10 years ago and I'm dealing with some vitamin deficiencies. Looking for a community of other's who might have gone through the same thing.

    Early Procedure Confusion

Another factor for sleeve vs. bypass is acid reflux. If you already have it now, it will be worse after a sleeve. About 30% of people who have NEVER had reflux develop it after a sleeve. Since I've had it for years it made it easier to choose the bypass.
