    Pre-op diet causing ......

Good luck getting a surgery date. The visit should be easy enough, make sure you ask a lot of questions! Write them down so you don't forget anything. Most surgeons explain the different surgical options and let you decide what you want. It's elective surgery, after all. Unless you have some other GI issues, like reflux or ulcers, then I don't see why you can't get what you want. As far as doing anything differently before the pre-op diet, you don't have to. I "weaned" myself into it by replacing a meal with a shake for a few weeks prior to the all liquid diet. Also, I was doing a low carb/high Protein diet as well. It's really a good idea to start incorporating post-op habits now - like trying out different Protein shakes to see what you like, and getting used to lowering your carb intake. Each surgeon has a different plan, so you may not even have to do a pre-op diet at all. Some people have to do all liquids for a month, some just a week or two, some just the day before, some people get to have a meal a day during their liquid diet - it all depends on what your surgeon prefers! I wish you luck, you should find a lot of good info on this site.

    Surgery for a different reason

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes. The transition to hard foods such as steak can be very difficult. So there is no need to rush headlong into it. I relied primarily on softer foods such as chili and soups. I am over 3 1/2 years post-op RNY. I put together a short article that describes my experiences. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf
  3. Hi Everyone! It's been a couple weeks since my first consultation with the bariatric surgeon in Atlanta. I am feeling confident and focused on moving forward with the surgery. I am planning to work with my insurance company to have the procedure. My surgeon and insurance require 90 days of tests (EKG, Gast. X-ray?, blood panel, Physical Therapy, Psychiatric Evaluation and Supervised Nutrition Plan). I am following the plan and taking it seriously. I have been told that I cannot gain any weight between my consultation and my nutritionist's appointments. I don't have to lose any weight, but I cannot gain or my insurance will not approve of the surgery. Makes sense. (I figure.. this is my last resort, so let's give it 150%!) I am also incorporating more steps into my day. I work a sedentary job in an office, so I am at approximately 8K steps when I am conscious of getting up and walking. My days consist of a lot of meetings in conference rooms or sitting at my desk working on my next presentations. So- I am trying to mind my health habits while staying focused on my work goals. While I try to eat "healthy," I am accepting the fact that I am a binge eater. Specifically, on carbs (bread, bread, bread). Throughout the work day, I eat balanced snacks of high protein, low carbs and keep my caloric count in check. However, when I go home, I am famished. I am so hungry and want to feel full. This has always been my eating habit in life and over the years-- it has caught up with me. I will talk about that more in a separate post. For now, I am looking to meet others who might have the same issues who would like to be support friends? Any else work in an office and have the same issues? Did you have bing eating issues?
  4. So I will be 5 months out on the 21st. I am down 70lbs from the day of surgery and at another stall.. 2nd one in the past 2 months.. I know they happen, and I know the scale will move again, I just wish it would start moving NOW!! I am able to eat more then I was a month ago "way more" However I am still getting in around 900-1000 calories a day. I still start with my meat first and if I am able to eat it all with out my full signal I move on to my greens. Usually after a couple of bites I am finished.. Where as a month ago I was barely able to get down 1/4 of a chicken breast.. I did have complications "leak, pneumonia, etc." and that did put me behind where I should have been at. So maybe eating as much as I'm eating now is normal who knows.. I just know this stall thing stinks!!! Loosing another pants size is a plus!! I just want to see the sale move again!!
  5. Hello! I am only 3 months out and have fallen in love with food in a completely different way compared with before surgery. Before I liked to shovel food into my mouth until I was very uncomfortably full. Now I love food for the taste, the different textures, what it feels like in my mouth, the social aspect and trying new things. Last week my partner took me to a really nice tapas place in Sydney city, it was perfect because everyone shares so I don't have to waste any food. And for my 21st he is taking me to one of the top restaurants in Melbourne. If your like me the love affair isn't over, it's just going to be different. It's hard at first but just make sure you take the time to really enjoy and savor every mouthful. Good luck!!!

    Getting unfilled

Lawbebe~ It depends. I was soooo tight over Thanksgiving and Christmas. I literally PB'd through Christmas infront of my MIL. I went to the doctor and had .4 cc's out. For me, that worked. I will need a slight fill in a few weeks, but this has been good restriction. There is no "magic formula"...just what is right for individuals. Enjoy the unfill. I know Terridoodle had 1cc taken out and was soooo happy with that.

    Getting unfilled

if you have been tight for two weeks we usually take all the band fluid out and let you rest for a week to make sure you have not developed any pressure ulcers and or esophagitis, give you oral antacid pills then under fluro re fill to comfort.
  8. Hey Restless, Actually I CANNOT EAT. My pre-op diet consist only of broths, sugar free Jello, SF popsicles, and any SF drinks with NO cabonation. Believe me...I am not eating. I was so proud to have eating a whole cup of jello yesterday...it took me THE ENTIRE DAY. but I did eat it!! To the rest of the gang, My gas has actually started to subside but I eat gas x and have been walking alot. I will not get any milk or cream soup, which at this point seems like a steak dinner, until 1 week post op. I have been drinking the "South Beach" powder for Water that is called "tide you over"...it has some Protein and it seems to help. I was banded 9/04/08 as well and have lost about 20lbs starting with the pre-op diet. I am so excited to have this done and cannot wait to be able to move around normally. HJH

    Salty Snacks?

I've had extreme cravings for the same items, I've been banded for 20days and I'm praying my first fill next week resolves the craving. Try to get your protein first then measure out a serving size portion and snack slowly on that through out the day. A friend told me to really increase my water intake and munch on ice chips when craving come. However, I've not be that proactive yet. Good luck and know you're not alone.
  10. My surgery was set for this Friday. Exciting right? I thought so until i got a phone call today advising me of sum $4000+ that i have to come up with before the surgery. 5 mo of co pays, labs, dr visits ,nutritionists, psychiatrists, almost 2 f'in weeks of this stupid liquid diet and for what.. How can they build someone up like this to just crush them? Surgery is canceled and i don't know what to do with myself.

    2 weeks.......

I see two choices, delay the surgery or cancel the trip. The drinking is empty calories and will not help. Three weeks is not enough time to allow the body to heal before you start partying. You should still be in the post-op phase. Sounds like an unworkable plan to me.

To Fill Or Not To Fill

Okay I think I'm getting a complex. I had 4cc my first visit and 2cc my second in my realize band. My last fill of .5cc was like 2 months ago and I follow up on the 14th. My doctor did not want to give me that little .5cc fill because of my weight loss but I conned him into it I'm to the point where I continue to lose weight but it's so iffy.. I got stuck at 217 for what feeled like FOREVER!!! I have lost 15 pounds in the past 6 weeks but I still can sit and eat a whole pork chop and a half can of green beans when I sit down and eat and be fine...I dont feel full and some days its all I have not to go back for seconds...I DON"T though! I know alot of this is mind over matter but I'm just wondering if you really think its okay to eat this way, be loosing weight and still not be in a green zone. I want to get to the point where my band says I WISH YOU WOULD TAKE THAT LAST BITE AND SEE WHAT I'LL DO TO YOU. So frustrating. I really feel like I want to push for a full CC next week but I just know how my doctor is and he will say "whats the point you're still loosing weight and I don't want you throwing up..slow and steady now". Thoughts?
  13. Coops is right! I completely agree! I'm just a tad over 6 weeks out and have only lost 28lbs. I cannot remember the last time I've lost almost 30lbs in 6 weeks...oh that's right, NEVER! So I am happy. I simply cannot compare my stats to someone else. Sometimes people lose a lot prior to surgery, so if they lose 30lbs pre-op and then another 30 in the 2 months following surgery, their ticker may say they are already down 60lbs. Which looks like HUGE loss in a short amount of time. Please do NOT get me wrong, their ticker SHOULD read -60lbs because they absolutely own every single pound they have lost and they should absolutely Celebrate those lbs gone. So I'm not saying anything bad about that. But please do NOT compare yourself to someone else. I went to a support group last night and there was someone there who basically had the RNY about a week before my sleeve, and she has lost -65lbs. I was blown away!!! But then she revealed that she had been hospitalized once post-surgery to clear out some Fluid build up in her stomach remnant, and her starting weight was 470lbs. So then it was all very much in perspective for me. She weighed basically 200lbs more than my starting weight, she was basically still recovering from the trauma of being hospitalized twice in the same month and all the sudden it was very clear why comparisons just don't work. Please do not get discouraged and down on yourself. And know that this is a journey. You know the saying ...the pounds did not magically appear overnight (even though sometimes it feels like they did!) and they will not magically disappear overnight. Celebrate your loss and know that when you are using your tool, you will continue to get healthy and lose weight!

8 wks post op today & so discouraged

YOUR DOING GREAT>>> i had that moment last week where i was being a bit brat like and not stepping back to take in the whole picture... im 9 weeks out and down 38lbs.. i thought it wasnt enough but now im thinking to myself and realizing that this is AWESOME and would never be able to say this otherwise .... so take a second and congratulate yourself on a job well done.. your doing amazing and this time its going to keep coming off!!! just keep rocking ur sleeve
  15. I really feel bad now cause i am 6 weeks now and only lost 12 lbs...
  16. For the past few weeks I've been noticing a dull pain on my left side. It's not there all the time and it's not unbearable, but it's just weird. Anyone else have this?
  17. I so understand what you are going through. I will be 8 wks postop tomorrow, Wednesday. I have only lost 32 lbs. I lost 16 lbs in the first 2 weeks and then 16 lbs in the last 6 wks. It is very frustrating. I follow my menu to the "t". The NUT even says I do very well with eating but why cannot I lose more! I go to the doctor on Thursday so I will ask what he thinks but I know what he will say, "you are doing great". Best of luck to you! I wish I had a suggestion but I don't know what to do either! Initial Restriction?

I have some details on weight progress in my signature, so people don't get too exited and think I lost 39lb after the surgery :-) I went for surgery 257 (came home 266 - don't get on the scale for at least few days after - it is all water weight) As of this morning I am 238.5. I am averaging 2.25lb a week so far.
  19. Tomorrow i will be 3 weeks post-op cannot wait for a fill im doing great in the morning .. Come the evening lately terrible with food choices! I keep telling myself STOP you are still healing just very hungry and even though my family has changed meals to healthier versions im not in the soft/solid food stage but yet have already ate that type of food. I need to get back on track!!!! I can do this ... Need to do this i was so motivated pre-op... But not so much post-op hmm

    things are well

Hello everyone! Sorry I haven't posted much. Even though I have been off of work for the past 2 weeks, I have been busy. I have realized who my true friends are. Derek, who had been on drugs, actually has been there for me quite bit these past 2 weeks. And my other friend who goes with me to the shows, well, she has shown her true colors as well. Thank God she wasn't my support angel. She pawned me off on her mother to give me a ride home the other night, when she lives very close to me. That just upsets me. Well anyway, my weight loss of 43 pounds has been maintained over the past week, and possibly down another pound or two. I have my first doctor's appointment since my surgery tomorrow morning. We will see what their scales say. I have actually done great on the full liquids, and have actually gone on to soft foods. I have been careful to not eat too much, or too fast. So far, I haven't had an upset stomach, and I haven't thrown up at all yet. Things have actually gone quite well. If anyone has anything thing to say about this, please let me know. Be honest. Well, once again sorry that I haven't been on here too much. I shall always strive to do better. Thanx for the kick Teresita! Also, please keep our friend Leigh in your prayers. She is haven't quite a rough time, and she went in today for surgery. They were either going to just unbuckle the band, or remove it. Not sure which. I am going to try to call her tomorrow and find out how she is doing. Take care, love ya all!

    Fill Postponed

Well, I had an appointment for a fill today and I really need one because the fairly tight restriction I had after my first fill has evolved into very little restriction. But I am a hospital social worker and 45 minutes before my appointment there was an emergency (a death) and I had to postpone my appointment until next week. I read Donali's post and I agree that dieting is not healthy, but it is going to be very difficult to maintain my weight without it (and I haven't been doing well at dieting anyway. . .hence, the band). I have already re-gained three pounds. I know they say not to worry until you get good restriction, but that's hard! Nancy

    Please Help!

There are a ton of Protein shakes out there and since you're three months away from your surgery, now is the perfect time to do a little experimenting. For my money, Pure Protein and Myoplex are the best tasting shakes on the market. Pure has 35g of protein per serving and Myoplex has 42g. I prefer Pure because it's 160 cals. vs. 300 cals. for Myoplex. But Myoplex still gets the nod for the best tasting but not by much. A number of folks here on the forum are big fans of Muscle Milk. Others love Syntrax. And the list goes on and on. Protein can be expensive so buy one and see what you think. If you like it, great. If not, but one of something else until you find one that works for you. Once you find one you like, you may want to experiment with the powdered version of their product. powder is about 50% cheaper than the ready to drink shakes and there is usually is not much of a difference in taste. One more suggestion - check out Capella flavor drops. There are a bunch of them so finding one (or more) you like is just a matter of experimenting. Here's the link http://capellaflavordrops.com/. There's also a new thread "Protein shake Recipes" here on the forum that will give you some ideas. Down the road you can experiment mixing bananas or other fruit with your shakes but, depending on your doctor, you may not be able to do that for several weeks following your surgery. You can also search the forum for protein recipes and get some great ideas as well. Getting all of the protein recommended by your doctor following your surgery is quite important. Remove all of the Water from your body and 75% of the stuff that's left is protein. Every cell in your body contains protein. As cells die, protein is used by the body to replace them. Following surgery, your body needs protein to build new tissue. And protein plays a key role in protecting you from bacterial and viral infections - especially important following surgery. Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your decision. You're gonna love the new you!!

    Medications/ need some advice

I also was allowed to swallow pills at one week post op. I never had any issues doing so. 3 months does seem a little long...now I will say it felt strange to feel full after taking one pill sometimes lol
  25. Hey all! Quick question for those who have been down this path... I find myself not needing to (maybe sub-consciously not wanting to?) weigh my food. Doctor's orders are to eat 4 oz. Protein 3x a day + 1/2 c of veggies - if I have room. I can visualize, for the most part, what 4 oz of protein is at this point. More so - I really notice when I start to get full. At that point, I stop! I'm pretty sure that I can eat 3-4 oz of protein, really can't get in the veggies at this point. Question: Do you guys still weigh your food? Am I on a dangerous road of stretching my stomach or overeating? Thanks for all of your help!
