What kind of exercise are you guys doing?
LivingLight replied to ldean7's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my opinion, you should be establishing a maintainable level of fitness. I think we all want the weight to just fall off of us, but exercising a LOT now won't help you in the long run. The goal is to establish a new lifestyle that you can continue on with. I know, from my past weight loss experiences, it's really easy to dive in to fitness, and work hard...super hard, to achieve results.....it's also easy to burn out (at least I did). Try not to overdo it in your haste to burn calories! -
Daily calories allowed and serving size after surgery
cindyw41 replied to volsfan82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
2oz of a Protein, 8oz of a liquid (yogurt, pudding, Soup, shake exc.) should be your serving size. Eat your protein first, then veggies and if you still have room then a carb/starch. I rarely have room for anything but my protein. Most of the time I can't finish that without feeling satisfied. My calories at this point is 600-800. I'm still in the losing phase. I doubt my surgeon will increase this until I'm maintaining. My target goals are 100 gr protein and 64oz Water. Some don't track calories..just protein, carbs and water. I track to make sure I hit the min calories because I'm still not feeling hungry and I can't rely on my body to tell me to eat. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Transitioning to full liquids excitement, fears, and
StephOnTheMove posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am so thrilled to report I will be starting full liquid diet Monday!! I couldn't be happier!!!!!!!!!!! Protein shakes, milk, gerber fruit, OJ, butternut squash Soup, pudding, even lowfat/low sugar ice cream.... and my favorite .. COFFEEEEEE.... WELL decaf... but for now I'll take it... I'll trick myself into thinking its the real thing. I'm jumping for joy....... but i do have one reservation.... I'm scared that switching from no calories to a few hundred (even if from protein) will make me gain weight. I know it's probably not an accurate hypothesis, and it has more to do with food fears and past dieting failures but I cant help think it anyways. So my question for those further along in the process.. what was the transition like... did anyone gain anything? did they stall? Did it have any effect on your progress? I'd love to hear feedback! -
Transitioning to full liquids excitement, fears, and
DavidOso replied to StephOnTheMove's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
just take it easy. you can get a huge number of calories in smoothies. just be aware of your fruit intake, again high calorie. i would strongly caution you on coffee, even decaf. the acids in coffee could give you problems. i had great success at this stage eating my full liquid out of a bowl with a baby spoon. ANY OTHER SHAPED VESSEL THAN A GLASS! i got very tired of drinking my "food". -
Has Anyone Struggled With Weight Loss During Mushy Phase?
Mlh replied to nikkibeal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You said "up" implying that we will gain sometimes. I seem to have gained back 4 of the 40 lost since 10-23-13, and it doesn't make sense calorie- wise. Is that somewhat typical? -

9 months out stuck stalled and platued
Jennabelle replied to marie110's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm only 7 months out, and been struggling with a stall. So yesterday I tracked absolutely everything I are/drank and discovered I haven't been doing what I should, too many carbs, 150 calories too many, not enough protein. And no exercise. So out came my "manual" and back to basics it is! Time to be accountable! -
I had my surgery on January 2006 and have not lost any weight! My doctor did not put me on any special diet and told me that my band would tell me when to stop eating I can't eat anything in the morning (I even have a hard time drinking hot tea) and at lunch it takes me about an hour and a half to eat a WW dinner. For supper, I usually eat pretty good, but sometimes I have a hard time and it takes me a long time to eat. I am use to cold food. I have tried joining WW which is not working (that is why I had this surgery) and things are so depressing... I have had 3 fills one un-fill and 2 more fills. I am now drinking Whey Protein in my sugar free drinks. It is OK, but I really do not know if I should go the low carb, low calorie or what diet. I am self paid and will be paying on this unsuccessful surgery for 3 more years. Is anyone else out there having the same problems? __________________ Banded 1/6/2006 Had 3 fills (don't know the specifics) After a year, only 20 lbs down. Now on Weight Watchers and losing slowly.

Junk food cravings and getting off track
BBdoodle replied to music1618's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 13 months post op and have cravings as well. When my sweet tooth acts up I feed it, I don't deprive myself but I do limit what I eat. I do not dump on sugar either so if I want chocolate I have it !!!! I buy a candy bar or some Resses or M&Ms .. of course they are the single serving size, I don't buy the 1 lb. bag or anything -LOL If I was two bars I eat them ... BUT... the next day I stay on my treadmill long enough to work off those calories I ate PLUS my regular work out !!! Its a pay off and that works for me. When I have a craving I feed it, I don't deny it because that only leads to overeating again for me. This little system works for me AND portion control !!!! BTW I love your picture with the puppy, I'm a HUGE animal lover -

Minimal weight loss in the first 6 weeks
GradyCat replied to Jaxie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm experiencing the same thing and my dietitian told me to just be patient and stalls are natural, but I didn't expect a stall this early into the game. I'm wrapping up 5 weeks post-op on Monday and haven't lost anything during Weeks 4 and 5 although I have lost 16 pounds and 15 inches in the first three weeks. I'm just trusting the process. I'm eating about 800 calories/day too and wondered if I needed to ramp it up a little and my dietitian said 900 calories max at this point. -
Minimal weight loss in the first 6 weeks
Jaxie posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been reading and following a lot of the posts. Trying to get as much information as I can. I had the endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty done 12/13/18. I've been following the recommended diet. I'm about 6 weeks out and have only lost 10 pounds...total. I exercise by walking for 30 mins five times a week & go to the gym for an hour, 3 times a week. I saw the dietitian just over a week ago. She thought maybe I wasn't getting enough calories. I've been getting most of my water in & all my protein. She wants me to eat around 800 calories a day. 9 days later & I've only lost 1 pound. I'm getting discouraged. Anyone else have this happen? Or have some helpful information? TIA -

Thought eating was getting better, but going backwards?
AvaFern replied to FrankyG's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm surprised they want you to eat that much at 6 weeks out. I still don't eat that much and I am 16 months out. I was lucky if I got in 800 calories for the first several months and even now if I try to eat too much dense Protein, I barf. Not to suggest you disregard your doctor's orders, but I've never heard of a doctor suggesting you get that many calories that soon after surgery. You will be back to being hungry again in a few months...enjoy the time now where you're not able to eat a lot and can lose weight quickly. -
Thought eating was getting better, but going backwards?
Babbs replied to FrankyG's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There's NO WAY at 6 weeks you will be eating 1400 calories! 600-800 is pretty normal as early on as you are. I'm 5 months out, and I can't get over 1000 yet! That said, try to eat every couple hours to get your calories in. I wouldn't go back to the shakes, as your pouch does need to start getting used to "real" food. 4-6 smaller meals a day should do the trick to get your calories in. And yes, even if you're NOT hungry You've got to kick that metabolism into gear and give it some food! Good luck and good job thus far with your weight loss! -
Frustrated: Light-headed and constant stalls - what could be wrong?
TvlGrl712 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Im 10 weeks out - only lost 29 lbs total (yes, I know thats alot more than I would without the surgery, but its still not alot considering I had surgery). I feel lightheaded many times throughout the day, everyday. Water is still hard for me - I get about 55 oz of my 64 required oz a day I get about 70g of protrein on average Calories are around 800 - food goes down easily, but I stick to 5 - 4oz meals a day I take a 30 min walk about every other day or so So yes, more water, more Protein, more exercise, but could that small of a deficit be causing my constant stalls and lightheadedness? Has anyone else had these issues? Help and advice please, no ridiculing - Im having a hard enough time keeping my head up right now. Thanks! -
I would like a little cheese with my whine
JSCRIMPSHIRE replied to gamergirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I gelt that way but I had two problems. The first was that my BP meds were keeping my BP too low. That is what was making me lightheaded upon standing and feeling bad. The other issue was that I found out through tracking on MFP that I was taking in less than 500 calories per day. When I started taking in more- like eating every two hours- I started feeling better and loosing again. -
What to eat 3 months post op
mariamitani replied to norbury29's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats on the weight loss. the closer you get to goal the slower and harder it is to get the weight off. If your not gonna exercise you should eat max of 800 calories a day till you get to goal. If you do exercise I recommend to increase calories to 1000. I exercise for about an hour daily and was not able to do this on only 800 calories, each person is different. See what works for your body.Protein intake should be around 70, 64 ounces of water a day, and take your vitamins. Make sure you measure your food and stay away from bad foods(cake, pop, icecream, pizza, brownies, pasta rice.....ect) If you cant help it and want something that's not healthy eat it enjoy it but once in a while. -
Post sleevers, please help
smbergie200 replied to Harpo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Im a realist and don't belief in telling people alot of fluff so I will give it to you straight. 1) Scared about missing food - You are what you eat - period. I will not lie to you - The sleeve gives you the tool lose the weight - but its up to you to not eat crap and gain all the weight back. On ocassion I will eat things like pizza and other junk, but its only on occasion. Its a slippery slope though, especially with the carbs. If you eat crappy quality carbs you wake up the carb cravings and can get yourself in trouble. Do I miss junk food - not as much as I thought I would - and if I absolutely HAVE to have something I eat it - just not a whole box. 2) drinking beers - Im not a drinker but I can tell you this - Beer is carbs and makes you fat. You also will get drunk quicker with less beer. If getting plastered with your friends is a must for you I do not reccomend you endulge in that behavior too often. I know alot of bariatric patients who gain LOTS back due to alcohol. Its empty useless fat promoting calories. The sleeve will not stop you from drinking 8 beers - remember liquid slides right on through. 3) Can you lose the weight on your own - I'll say this much. The odds are against you. For me it was IMPOSSIBLE. I was a quantity eater and I like to be full. Now that I have a tiny stomach I can be full with so much less food and now that my hunger hormones are reduced I get much less hungry. But if I eat crappy carbs my hunger does return with a vengence so refined carbs are the enemy. Without the surgery I would still be an obese 377 pound 36 year old with who know what kind of health issues. 4) its irreversible - so what. Do you want your big bowling ball size stomach back that takes forever to get full and releases all kinds of hunger hormones. I don't miss mine. I still have a fully functioning stomach - just smaller. Your not getting a gastric bypass. Your body will work just the way it always has worked - just better. 5)Your going to die - I can say this - If you do nothing you will die. Also death from the sleeve is really really really low. Bariatric surgery has really come a long way and is very safe now. Worry about how unhealthy you will be without taking control of your obesity. That is the real fear. Your absolutely normal to be fearful of the unknown. I can tell you that I have zero regrets! I have had no complications and have never even thrown up once. I just had a tummy tuck and feel for the first time in my life - happy in my own body. No more looking in the mirror and wanting to PUKE. ALL my health issues went away - no more cpap - no more high blood pressure - etc etc. Its a miracle surgery. Good luck with your journey - Shayne -
Slow Users: More Calories = Weight Loss Could be a coincidence...?

definitely not a concidence. some people need more calories to keep their bodies from moving into "starvation mode." sometimes it just takes some experimenting to find that sweet spot. -
What is the optimal amount of calories for max weight loss?
Pretty_In_Purple replied to atlchick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

What is the optimal amount of calories for max weight loss?
macman replied to atlchick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have logged my food since I started this journey. It works very well for me. Calorie intake is important but just as important is the make up of the calories. How much Protein, Fats and carbohydrates are you taking in. I am 5 months out and have been doing low carb, < 50 per day. In the last few weeks I have upped my carbs to 60-70 per day and it has made a big difference with energy levels. I am still losing weight steadily, but have the energy to exercise and I feel good about it. -

Too much protein in one sitting leading to hair loss?
thesupportedhalf replied to Travelmego's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Being an ex personal trainer and nutritionist I can tell you my thoughts, your body cannot absorb more than 45grams of protein at any given time. And in fact it is a waste of calories. Any additional protein will put both your liver and kidney at high risk. It's also a well Known fact that you can gain a kinda coating of protein around your kidneys ( a coating of fat ) so it is definitely dangerous. I have worked with people, albeit 4 yrs ago that have had kidney issues because of this same reason. Of course feel free to google it for a second opinion. :-)
