    Lap Band to Gastric Sleeve

I was banded in 2008, lost a bit of a weight, struggled with finding the perfect fill for me. Eventually I became so miserable with the band that I gave up, ate what was easy to get down, and gained all the weight back. Over the last 2 years or so I was getting so miserable, everything would get stuck and I was having reflux, which I never had. I kept telling the doctors I was slipped, but my X-ray showed everything was in a normal position, so I decided to start the process for a revision. I just revised to the bypass on October 24 and I certainly was slipped, my band was around my esophagus with my stomach incarcerated inside the band. They don't know how I was managing to eat anything, but I was! So far I am SO glad to have revised. The pain was approximately the same as band surgery, I did not need narcotics, my surgery was Thursday, I went back the next Thursday and likely felt good enough to go back sooner. But I can eat comfortably and that was the ultimate goal. If I don't lose another pound, I'd be sad, but I'd be fine because it's so freeing not to have that band anymore. Now, just to get back to reality, I did have complications from anesthesia, so not everything has been rainbows and sunshine, but I'd still do it all over. Your mileage may vary, but based off of my short month long experience, I'd recommend at least talking to a surgeon about revising and seeing how you feel about it after that.

    Freaking out a little bit

I was a BMI of 35 and had a bypass. I think the first 2 weeks I lost around 8-10 pounds then it slowed considerably and I was a steady 2-3 pounds per week loss for a few weeks then it quickly dropped to around 2 pounds/week consistently for the next 6 months. I then purposely increased calories once I hit a normal BMI at the 6 month mark from my typical 600-700 to 900 then up to 1000 and now am around 1500 maintaining. Everyone is different. I expected since I started at a low BMI for weight loss to slow quickly and taper down fast but it was really steady after the first few weeks. I never hit the typical stall either. Looking back I think my calories were too low. I barely hit 60 gram of protein and averaged 650 calories for months. I did take body measurement and some weeks the inches would suddenly drop even with only 2 pounds lost and other weeks the measurement would stay steady. It is so hard early on to not hyperfocus on every detail, we all did it. Try to focus on following your guidelines and it will happen. Some people stall or weight loss slows, they increase calories and have a sudden drop in weight, on paper it doesn't make sense but once you are farther out you will see your progress.

    Lap Band to Gastric Sleeve

I had lap band in 2005. I lost about 80 pounds but was miserable almost the entire time. I later found that my band slipped probably in the 1st 6 months due to violent vomiting secondary to gall bladder dysfunction. In 2009, when my surgeon discovered the slip (FINALLY), he removed the lap band and offered to convert me to sleeve then. I chose not to for various personal reasons. Skip ahead to 2015. I have gained all of my weight back and can't seem to get back on track. A friend, who had also been banded and converted to the sleeve, got me thinking and I finally decided to get sleeved. I underwent gastric sleeve in April 2018. The pre-op and immediate post-op is nearly identical. The pain I had with the sleeve was similar to the port pain with the band, although I couldn't sleep laying down on my side for about a month. My weight loss was much slower with the sleeve. They say it's because I've been down the bariatric path before and my body is slower to respond (metabolism remembers). Besides, I'm a little older. Today, I've lost 86 lbs. At this point, I'll stall for 2-3 weeks then lose a pound or 2. I have more energy and I don't feel deprived, at all. The only negative is that I have a bit of nighttime reflux. It's a battle I wage every day and am seeing a gastroenterologist to monitor and treat. So far, it's not significant enough to consider any kind of revision and my plan is that the sleeve is my last stop on the bariatric train.
  4. My surgery is scheduled for December 4. I’m having a gastric bypass. I’ve lost 15 lbs in one week on the liquid diet which seems like a lot. Yesterday was the worst day so far. I’m exhausted and didn’t sleep well last night. I had to get up at 3am to eat a sugar free jello because I was so hungry. I’m allowed 5 protein shakes a day. Along with sugar free jello and broth. I do not feel well. I’m constantly drinking water and constantly peeing. It’s like I can’t catch up with the dehydration. I know I have only one more week but I feel terrible. Thinking of calling the nurse practitioner on Friday - I know I should be hungry but I feel off. Any insights or advice? Thanks

    🍂 Nov 2019 Challenge🍂

Check in: My personal goal: I want to lose 100 and 25 lbs. I have already lost 25 lbs the old fashioned way. Dieting. I joined Noom and went on Jenny Craig along with moving out of my mother's bread infested apartment. Surgery type: I had a gastric bypass in 2012 but gained a lot of weight taking care of my mom. Now I am having a revision from RNY to SADI on December 4th. I here good things about it. The weightloss is supposed to be better than distalization. My weight: I started out at 350. Due to RNY I went done to 200. I regained 75lbs and lost 25 after I got control of my life again. Now my current weight is 250. I am hoping to get down to 150. That would be awesome.

    Lap Band to Gastric Sleeve

Maybe if you look around in the Revision forum you'll find someone with this experience.
  7. When I first saw my doctor, he and I had already discussed doing the surgery all-in-one. (Revised to sleeve) I was having a lot of problems. My band had slipped so from February until my surgery last Monday, my band has been unfilled. We didn't know that my port slipped down two inches as well until he went in. My surgery took longer than anticipated, but it was sooooo worth it. Good luck to you! I hope you don't have to wait.

    How long did you wait?

So I finished all of the insurance pre-requisites and I had an appointment with my surgeon today. He says I am an excellent candidate for gastric bypass surgery based on all the consults I had- nutrition, psych. So my doc says he will fax in my paperwork to the insurance company wit a request for authorization. Once insurance approves, they will call me with a date. I know it’s different for everyone and with Thanksgiving coming up it may delay things... but how long did you have to wait before you got authorized? I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois.

    Dr. Doesn’t require protein?b

Hi. I couldn’t imagine any bariatric surgeon not requiring their patient to get protein in post op. It is very important for healing. The cardinal rule for bariatric patients post op and for life is “protein first” i had sleeve in 2018 and revision to bypass last Friday. Both surgeons required 60grams of protein post op. Good luck with your research and hope that helped.

    Gastric bypass or sleeve

gerd can be controlled with meds.. i am living example.. i rather have that then the risk of ulcers stomach perforations nutritional deficiency and other issues related to the bypass
  11. Thank you all so much for your responses. Waiting to get upper gi now so they can see if it has slipped. At first I thought I really wanted it done all at once but I am miserable and after reading some of the responses here, it seems like it would be better to get removed first. Given I have just started the process for bypass surgery, it doesn’t seem like it would slow the process and I am hoping for some relief. I don’t think I can handle this for 4-6 months longer!

    Lap Band Removal

I’m currently starting the process to revise mine to bypass but in waiting room now for tests to see if slipped so may need removed as separate surgery. What is recovery from removal surgery? I’ve had mine since 2009 and feel similarly to all of you. I’m really ready to get this removed!
  13. That is a tricky question. Some dr. will do the removal and revision at the same time..... but it all depends on what he finds when they open you up. Some times the scaring it too bad to do all at once. Some make you wait 3-6 months. Removal was a piece of cake. I had to have mine removed march 23, 2017. I was at 143lbs and had been there for 7+ years. So when they removed it, he would not do a revision because insurance didn't cover the removal and for sure would not cover a revision. Plus.... I didn't weigh enough. I'm 5'2". I searched tons of places and got the same response. I was about to head to Mexico for revision when i happen to find a dr. right here 10 mins from my work....... No, the insurance still didn't cover it and i was now at 173.5lbs and 31 BMI. But because i was a "revision" (2.5+ years later) and i was cash pay ($14k)... the sleeve was done 8/28/19. He said when he opened me up.... my stomach looked great. Very very little scarring. I did, however, have a hiatal hernia i didn't know about. Since i have lost 31.5lbs... and i'm sitting at 142 which is 1lbs less then when i had the band removed. The SX was the easiest i ever had. Zero pain and was back to work on Monday.

    🍂 Nov 2019 Challenge🍂

I haven't been participating a lot lately but I did read some beautiful thanksgiving stories that made me want to cry. The one about the grandpa with schizophrenia really touched me. Today's question is what food am I most grateful for today. Well all of them because I am about to embark on a pre op diet. My doc allows meat and veg in the diet but I am going to try to stick to protein shakes. I am having revision surgery 12/4.

    Crazy personal question

when i first started my journey back in 2009 with the band. I was 232lbs with 44G/H boobs. Lost 89lbs and went to a 34H. My boobs stayed exactly the same, my band changed 10". Lost the band in 2017, had gone up to a 36H..... fast forward, revised to sleeve 8/28/19.....back to the 34H. Yes the sag a little, but the nips are still looking forward and not at my toes.

    Food Before and After Photos

Actually, Fluffy was concerned about your volume. What volume/meal is your doctor advising? I know I was still only eating a couple of tablespoons of soft foods at a month out. (I had a sleeve at that point, revised to bypass later)

    Food Before and After Photos

I had a sleeve, not bypass and at this point I'm pretty sure it was within expectations that I be able to eat 3-4 oz in a meal. Don't make me freak out and think I'm stretching my sleeve!

    Partner/ spouse support

The risks are minimal and you are far more likely to die from the excess weight than the surgery. My husband who is also a nurse was worried for me too, in fact he was more nervous than me! His concerns were that I'd die on the table or have serious complications. Of course being me, I did have serious complications and was in hospital for 2 weeks and had to have an emergency bypass but once through that, all was well, slow progress after 2 major ops but all good. He was also very aware that for the last 15 years i have tried every diet on the planet to lose weight and keep it off. I was starting to show signs of metabolic syndrome and he knew if i didn't do something permanent i could well be dead from my weight in ten years. Surgery is scary but not as scary as doing nothing. You know in your heart if this really is the right path for you. So make your decision explain to him you understand his fears but ultimately it is your decision and you NEED him to respect and support it. Gastric bypass or sleeve

You don't see sleeve patients who don't have GERD and don't want revisions because why would we talk about that? Congratulations on your successful surgery. Since you are calling other people out on "lies" when they disagree with you, please cite a credible source that the sleeve gives you a 50% chance of GERD getting worse. Most good doctors would not give someone a sleeve if they HAD GERD knowing what we now know.

    Gastric bypass or sleeve

Lies.. There's maybe 5% chance of those issues where sleeve is like 50% chance of either getting gerd or making gerd worse. Everyday I see ppl complaining about gerd and needing revisions.. I'm 4 weeks post op from RNY with not one single issue

  22. Hi I just found this app today. I am scheduled for Gastric Bypass Surgery on Dec 10th. I am from Ontario. Canada and my surgery is covered by my provinces health care plan. I see alot of people posting about waiting for insurance approval, that has to be stressful! Sent from my SM-G920W8 using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. @Chris NH thank you! I did not realize that they had a specific customer service team for this. I did meet with my surgeon’s office and they did confirm that they just revised the requirements and that it is no longer 6 months but that they would not give her a specific amount of time. She said basically for me to do 2 months followed by my physician and then they will send in the prior auth and see what they say. But I’m going to call back tomorrow and see if I can get the bariatric team and try to get a specific answer. thank you again for your help!

  25. I had my Band removed on 5/31. Dr. wouldn’t even talk Gastric Bypass until after 3 months. Then two weeks after my first appointment to talk about revision , I had my first really awful Gallstone attack. I ended up having it removed on 10/18. So now I’m going to get all my pre-submission appts. I’ve met with the Dietician, have Sleep Study scheduled for 12/16. Waiting to hear on Psych visit. Once all of those are done, he’ll review and the submit to insurance. I have no clue how long it takes to be approved. I’ve got to start making headway on weight loss. He never gave me a % to lose.
