Schel, I'm sorry I didn't get a message off to you before your surgery!! Congrats on getting the band. I'm glad you seen my message about crossing off the "bypass option". My doctor, Dr. Chute, was fine with that. I was scared to death of that thought myself. I would have chosen a different hospital before agreeing to have the bypass if they could not place the band. I was wanting to have it done at Abbott, so I'm glad they were ok with me crossing that off. Again, best of luck to you and congrats!! If you'd like to email me personally, my address is banded_renata@yahoo.com Let me know how you are doing! Take care. Talk to you soon.

Newly Bandless After 5 Years...but it's not the band's fault!
Sunta posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hello All, I was a frequent poster on this board when I first got my band 5 years ago. Then, like so many succesful Bandsters, I dropped off the board because I was too busy living my happy banded life, 100 pounds down and thrilled. I did gain back about 30 pounds over the five years, but that was because I had some minor band issues like not being able to find the sweet spot, and getting too tight, then too loose, then I remained too loose for a couple of years. However, that all being said, here I sit five years later, 70 pounds thinner but without my band. I've been reading alot of posts by people who have lost their bands due to erosion and slippage or other problems. I would like to report that I did lose my band, but it was not the fault of the band at all. I consider my band to have worked extrememly well for me despite the minor issues with tightness/looseness. I consider 70 pounds off to be a huge success. What happened to me was that my appendix burst three weeks ago, and when it burst it spread infection throughout my body and infected the band. After my appendix was removed, my band had to come out a few days later (after I was stabilized on antibiotics). At the time my band was removed, it was in perfect position and condition aside from the infection from my appendix. I am posting this to say that not all band losses are the fault of the band. Life is full of risk, and despite my horrible hospital experience recently, I can honestly say I am glad I took the risk of having the band. 70 pounds is a huge life change for me and I can do so much more than I could when I was much heavier. I am considering the bypass now but will start off trying to maintain my loss on my own and hope I won't have to have another surgery. I have learned alot during my five years with my band, such as eating primarily lean Protein, upping my fruits and veggies, and combining protein and Fiber to feel fuller longer. I am hoping with these tricks, I can succesfully maintain my weight loss and maybe even lose more weight. Don't let other people's horror stories stop you from getting the band. If it weren't for my appendix, I'm sure my band would have continued in good condition. Good luck to all of you newbies and I wish you much success with your bands! -
I am starting down the path to my new life. I have gone to the Info meeting for crosby hospital where they have 4 surgeons that do the lap-band and the r-n-y bypass. My goal is to be able to go walking, hiking, biking with out getting short of breath and in pain. To start living life.

I'm scheduled for surgery at Abbott for Nov 1st. I talked with Dr. Chute about that. I told him I DID NOT want the bypass done if they couldn't do the band. He said all I had to do was cross it off the form. So I crossed off that sentence or two and wrote. "I do not want the bypass done if the band cannot be placed."

May Not Be Able to Get My Surgery Due to No PCP with Anthem BCBS
Briswife15 replied to ThreeOhThree's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have Anthem BCBS and agree with notmyname. I just had gastric bypass 8 weeks ago, and Anthem approved without any input from my PCP. I filled out lots of paperwork for my surgeon which included my own list of how many times I tried to lose weight on my own, and failed. Presumably my surgeon submitted tht info to Anthem. But again, i did Not need anything from PCP. Good luck, and don't give up! I'm rooting for you! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app -
La Madam - Thanks for your gentle reminder to all of us here that patience is the key to our sanity and weight loss. I do not weigh myself everyday, but during the 6 weeks post op, I was discouraged at not having lost any weight. My doctor was one of those who talks down to you if you don't lose enough weight during the liquid phase. He always compares you (his patient) with his other patients, which is wrong!! Especially since most of his patients are gastric bypass and of course they are going to lose more. Even though my doctor isn't well informed, I'm glad that I have this place to turn to and get the help and advice that I need. Being well informed about the band process and the living it are two different things. I thought I knew what to expect, but what I didn't expect was the emotional ride. Thanks again for the reminder. Tricia H

We are going to disagree on a few points here. No antibiotics for port infections? Yeah, we disagree. Many people get port infections and many are on antibiotics and they don't typically don't experience erosion so it most certainly is up for debate. An infected port is only one way to erode, not the only way. I agree with you that erosion is not typically the patient's fault, but since it can't be proven we don't really know one way or another. Some of the theories on erosion: A band that is placed that is too small for the stomach. A fill that is way too tight for an extended period of time. A scratch on the back of the stomach during surgery. Chemicals used to sterile instruments for surgery. A port infection. Many theories have been shown to be false such as smoking causes erosion, it does not. Spicy food, etc. Those have been proven to be false. At this point it is known what does not cause erosion, it is theory as to what does cause erosion and NOBODY should let an infected port go. Many can be treated very successfully with antibiotics. One point you make that I agree with you SOOOO much! And it is this: I'm beginning to kick myself for getting banded vs. a sleeve. I've had band problems and while I am certainly a minority in the type of problems I've had, I still can't believe I wanted something I could reverse. I have no reason to ever weigh 112 pounds more than I do again. I want permanent, I'm not really sure why having something I could reverse was so important to me. Perhaps it was because I don't think I really thought it would work anyway so at least I could have the latest fad removed. :rose: I'm not sure. The idea of no erosion, no port issues such as pain, infection, flipped, a port sticking out as it is now, none of that. No slips, heartburn, reflux, fills, unfills, restriction... I'd do a sleeve today if I had it to do over again. If I knew without a doubt I could not eat bread I'd have revision surgery today, this minute. But just as with a band, some sleeve people can eat bread and some can't. I already know I can't eat bread without a special trick today (and no, I won't tell the newbies what that trick is). Since I can't eat bread I'm going to stick with the band for now. If I ever lose it, it's a sleeve for me.

To do surgery or not to do?
Djmohr replied to beccaconaty87's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@beccaconaty87 Hi there and welcome! I just wanted to reach out and welcome you to this site. Honestly I don't know what I would have done without my Bariatric Pal family. They have helped me so many times when I had had questions or simply wanted to rant a little bit. There is one regret I have had regarding weight loss surgery and that is I wish I would have been brave enough to do this in my twenties. I was scared for all the reasons you listed. Instead I kept moving forward with yo yo dieting and adding more weight along the way. In the process I developed high blood pressure high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, Gerd, sleep apnea, stage 3 kidney disease. I have severe arthritis of my spine and have had now 5 surgeries to deal with that. My knees are bad, my hips are bad and I suffered from severe migraines. All of this was a direct result of being obese. I carried an extra 150lbs around for 25 years. I truly believe that having this surgery gave me my life back. I am down 111 lbs in just 9 months. all of my comorbitities have resolved but the damage to my spine is done and cannot be undone. If you do this for yourself, be brave and do your research. It really will give you that time back with your kids as well. Please feel free to reach out with questions. I suspect like others you will likely to told to go the bypass route because it will cure your Gerd where the other surgeries may make that worse. You only want to go through this type of surgery once. -

First dr I went to would only do bypass on me so i left. Second dr highly recommended bypass for all the reasons you mentioned. He did perform the band on me as I told him I knew I could do it and wasn't taking the risks associated with bypass. I will let you know that I remind him monthly how well I am doing . Just Monday I had my 6 month visit where I am down 68lbs and still no fills!!! You got this. Find the dr you believe in and more importantly find a dr that believes in you!! And believe in yourself!! -
To do surgery or not to do?
dhrguru replied to beccaconaty87's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
What helped me with my decision to have the surgery was involving my kids (ages 11 & 12) and making them aware of what would change for me, confirm *nothing* would change for them etc. They are the BEST supporters and made the decision so much easier. (My hubby is great too, but the kids inquire more, just naturally curious.) You'd have to gauge how open you could be with your kids, but it was a great motivator for me. You already know the the end effect of what will happen if you decide not to (or IS happening), you feel badly about yourself, what you eat, how people view you, how YOU view you. So it more of the same. Are you willing to accept that? I too was concerned coming out of surgery 'sicker' than I was going in-- for that I had to trust truths I know about my body... I heal well/fast, manage pain well, I never have complications, and have have a "stomach of steel" that rarely give me troubles. You know you best! Finally-- I vote bypass, but then I'm biased :-) -
VSG on 4/16/18: My journey
scornet1 replied to TexasMommy80's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had my gastric bypass on 4/16 as well. My roughest obstacle has been the muscle stitch and trying to get out of bed or a deep chair. Coughing was agony! But today, 4/21 is much much better. I walked and walked and walked and I think that it helped me progress. I did not take any prescribed pain medication either. I am a recovering alcoholic (3yrs[emoji5]) and in rehab they caution against any addictive substances so I declined. I did take adult liquid Tylenol when I got home Wednesday night and Thursday through the day. Yesterday I walked through the pain and feel so great today I have not had any issues with getting liquids down, it just takes forever[emoji13]. I have had lots of (TMI ALERT) watery dark bowel movements. The Dr. office said to call if they look like tar. They don’t so I’m not worried about it. One last comment, I have experienced a huge change in my energy. I was always so tired every morning before I had surgery, and was expecting to be very tired while recovering. The opposite is true. I find that I have lots of energy! This is good and bad....... we are getting possession of another home we purchased tomorrow and there are sooooo many things that need to be done, and I cannot do any of it. I want to, and feel like I can, but I know I am asking for a surgery if I start lifting or moving. We had our procedures done on the same day and I will look for your posts to see how you are coming along and cheer on your successes. Good luck! My weight day before surgery was 245. I am 5’7. I am not going to weigh myself until Monday. 1 week out. I know I could get crazy watching the scale and a don’t want to get fixated on numbers. -
BYPASS-ERS tell me your success stories!

Had my hiatal hernia repaired at the same time as bypass. -
Today I just started my 2 weeks liquid diet and my surgery is April 23rd. Question? My friend had bypass done in February and she told me that was ate hard boiled egg whites (no yolk) throughout the 2 week liquid diet. She said her surgery was fine and the doctor said everything looked good. Has anyone else tried egg whites or other alternatives?

What can I expect as a guy having the gastric bypass surgery.
cybershank replied to cybershank's topic in The Guys’ Room
Even though I never noticed any signs of reflux the scope revealed severe damage from it. They even told me I was at a high risk for esophagus cancer. The surgeon said he would not do the gastric sleeve because it would be suicide. I know my esophagus was good after my pre Lap-Band scope. I know some women who have had the bypass including my mother, but no men. I was wondering what I can expect as far as muscle loss and that sort of thing. Thanks for everyone's input. -

Why do people think you are crazy when you tell them your considering WLS?
SkinnyMiniMe replied to kelmelmom24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They probably don't really understand anything about this procedure. They are probably familiar with the gastric bypass when it was not done laproscoptically. Heck sometimes I have a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that I am putting a band around my stomach to lose weight. I really didn't tell many people because I don't want to hear negative remarks. I definitely don't need any food police after the procedure anyway. My new motto: "What other people think of us, is none of our business". Paolo Coelho Out of the 4 people I told the one naysayer (my mom), I told her ...next year you will be telling me that its the best thing I ever did for myself. Good Luck on your journey & look for inspirational friends along the way. -
Let me ask you a question- I called Cigna and they confirmed that revision coverage is different than starting from scratch and showed the 4 bullet points. I qualify for all but 1 - the one about the band causing the medical problem. The surgeons office said that because of that- I need to see the nutritionist, psyc etc... So that it will be easier to get approved in 3 months vs no wait with the revision. I'm worried that after all that hardwork- what else do I need to do
