well my 5 month surgiversary was on the 15th! I'm a few days late, but better late than never in my book. I'm so happy that i decided to do the revision and get rid of my CRAP BAND!!! that thing was the worst, especially after it slipped. So, since 10/15 i am down 50 pounds! my blood work is great except for Vitamin D which i am working on now! I am now down 77% of my excess body weight since surgery, the lowest that i have been since college! I have so much energy, that my kids are finding it hard to keep up with me! I can eat pretty much anything that i want, which is a double edged sword! I sometimes 'want' what i shouldn't eat, but a few bites and i'm good! before it would be all or nothing! My husband and son think i'm HOT, that is so cool! I am looking forward getting the last 19 pounds off and getting to goal! that is when I am going to buy a new wardrobe! Until then, my baggy size 10 jeans will just have to do! thanks for reading and being a great support group!!! Patti

What to tell family and friends about your decision for WLS
sndycnrd replied to bandstarr430's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have told only those people who need to know. My husband, my closest friend, my friend who had bypass and my pcp. I have made my mind up and as of today I don't really care what anyone has to say and actually, I really don't want to hear it. I have decided to keep it to myself (except for those listed above) and let the results speak for themselves. Will I tell anyone in the future? Maybe, maybe not. If I think either they or I would benefit from the info I will tell them. If not, then I will not tell them. It is really nobody’s business. Afterall, I don't announce to the world that I have diabetes so why announce that I have a lap band. I tell the diabetes information only to those who need to know in case of emergency. . -

Doesn't your surgeon have a Nutritionist working with him/her? If you have the opportunity to meet with a Bariatric nutritionist, I highly recommend it. Mine required me to attend classes to prepare me for eating right after bypass and then again prior to transitioning to real food. My program is 5 mini meals a day , every 3 - 4 hours, to include low fat Protein, 2 multigrain carbs and 2 fruit servings daily, and healthy fats.

Sheri, welcome to LBT. I was looking into the bypass when I found out about the lap band and that is the way I am heading. Check with your HR department about insurance changes for next year, maybe put a "bug" in their ear about the need for coverage for lap band. Good luck.

reflux, severe abdominal pain, miserable
WASaBubbleButt replied to prurep's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Sounds a lot like I was before I revised to a different procedure. In my case it was band intolerance. I wish I had a magical cure for you but I don't. :smile2:( There is always revision? -

Dec 30, 2013 was the day i thought my weightloss journey would change my life for the better. As soon as i awoke, my life was changed, i was in excruciating pain in my chest that they thought i was having a heart attack. I ended up staying for 1 week n a day. It would've been longer but i was scared of getting a feeding tube do i forced myself to drink. To make a long long story short, I'd end up having an egd monthly, upper gi 3 times, sent to specialists to figure out what happened to me. I've been on so many meds, throwing up most nights anything that I'd eaten that day to present, acid reflux an understatement ! Ph tests, swallow test, had 3 different surgeons see me. Finally, lots of continuous praying, i was sent to the surgeon that was suppose to do the surgery initially. After 3 months of her investigating, she decided that i need a revision. So here i am, starting all over again with the stages, minus 85% of my stomach. To this day, i can still only drink about 32 ounces of liquiq per day, forcing that. It hurts to drink, eat, swallow my own saliva, i hate to think of eating or drinking. I lost 83 lbs, put back 10 bc i started eating rice, although it hurt, it was less painful and simple to cook wo wasting it bc i can't eat it! I gave up on exercising and even caring. I told my doc that as well. She's very kind and hard knocks at the same time. There will be 2 surgeons, i am scared, she said id need a drain, i might be cut instead of scoped bc of possible scar tissue from vsg, and a higher chance of leaking. Wow, seems like i can't catch a break. Please pray if you don't mind. I just moved up and fixed thanksgiving so that i could try and eat with my family. Dec 4th, im discouraged but trying to be hopeful. God willing, this will make things the way they should have been b4, if not better! God bless you all and gl. Thank you for reading my story. I hope to have good news postop!

How do sleevers get RNY?
Ed_NW replied to mousecat88's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It's not much of a revision. The sleeve was first done as a pre surgery for the super obese to loose enough weight to get the RNY safely. Just picture the anatomy of an RNY with part of the stomach already removed. -
The doctors assume you are compliant with your sleep apnea treatment. Sleep apnea is dangerous, if you have it, it'd be a good idea to use your CPAP machine. For more info see, note on the link is a graph which helps illustrate the benefits of using a CPAP machine vs. not - The danger of untreated sleep apnea Everyone agrees that the breath-stopping type of snoring known as sleep apnea isn’t a good thing — it disrupts your nighttime rest, makes you sleepy during the daytime, boosts blood pressure, and increases the chances of developing heart trouble. Just how bad is it? Pretty bad, according to an extended study of almost 1,500 Spanish snorers. Researchers followed the men, who had been referred to a hospital sleep clinic, with yearly checkups. All were offered the most successful treatment, called continuous positive airway pressure. It involves breathing through a face mask that delivers a stream of air into the nose. Many of the study volunteers decided not to use the device. After 10 years, the researchers tallied up how many of the men had suffered a heart attack or stroke, needed a procedure to bypass or open a clogged heart artery, or died from cardiovascular disease. About 1 in 7 men (14%) fell into this camp. Cardiovascular trouble was three times more likely in men with severe untreated sleep apnea than it was in men with treated sleep apnea. In fact, rates of heart trouble were about the same in men with treated apnea as they were among simple snorers — who have noisy but regular breathing during sleep — and nonsnorers. The results appeared in the March 19, 2005, Lancet.

I am debating on whether or not to get an unfill too. Does a port revision mean that the Fluid will be drained from the band automatically? If that's the case, I'm not sure I want a low profile port, but I will still need the port moved as it is sitting next to my belly button and the hernia that is going to be repaired. As for the unfill, I don't wear my band tight either, but I have problems every single month that I have my period. The band gets super tight and I can't eat anything but liquids or I'll PB. I certainly don't want problems after the tummy tuck, but I like my restriction where it is now (except for TOM). Cathy

Juli and Lellow, I'll be keeping tabs on both of you as well as it sounds like we are all having similiar surgeries. I am scheduled for April 30th for tummy tuck with 360 degree cut, vertical incision, liposuction, hernia repair and port revision. I wanted to have the surgery at the end of March or 1st of April, but trying to schedule the plastic surgeon and general surgeon together was difficult. My surgery is supposed to be around 5 1/2-6 hours. I am going home the same day and following up with my plastic surgeon the following day. I am going to be optimistic and try to get back to work after having 3 weeks off, but we'll see how that goes. I am not at my goal weight either, but this timing is right for me. I don't know if I'll post pics or not either. I am extremely modest!! It kills me every time I have to stand naked in front of the plastic surgeon! Cathy

8 weeks post-op! The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes. One thing to do now at this stage is to assess your protein intake. Your protein requirement is met by a combination of the protein from your meals combined with the protein from your supplements (protein shakes, protein bars). Since your meal volume is beginning to increase, that also means that the amount of protein from meals is increasing, especially if you concentrate on consuming high protein meals. Therefore you could be able to reduce your reliance on supplements and the calories they contain. I went from 3 protein shakes a day, down to 2, then 1 and finally zero when my meal volume increased to 1 cup per meal at a year and a half. I found that softer foods such as chili and Soups went down much easier than harder food such as steak, so I relied on them. I have included some recipes at the end of the following article. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

Water and sleeve stretching
Healthy_life2 replied to NewChiGirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Big debate on if you can stretch your sleeve. Very few people need a revision..Enough said. A couple gulps and you feel uncomfortable. To me, it sounds like you are feeling the restriction from your surgery. I distance run. I can't chug or gulp water at the aid/refueling stations on the route. I feel the same sensation you are describing. Stop gulping and chugging water. Start sipping. -
Hello, I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Melissa and my LAP-BAND® surgery is scheduled for October 5th. I am very scared, but thrilled all the same. This journey has taken my up, down and all around so far, but its nearing the climax. I originally started out as a gastric bypass patient, but I backed out at the last minute. Good luck to everyone... This truly is a life changing experience.

My DH's aunt has bypass 4 years ago and lost 200 lbs, then promply regained at least 50 back. she probaly weighs 250 right now. Granted she is thinner then before BUT she is also one of those people who wont exercise at all, not once has she. not even walk. She asked my why my skin wasn't swinging in the wind like hers. exercise really helps me and sure I will need a TT , and my arm wings wave at people But I am a true believer in exercise. My band is a tool , just a tool that I am using to help me lose and keep off the weight. She still refuses to exercise. Said if she wanted to exercise she wouldnt have had the surgery. Sigh oh well you can't help someone who doesn't want to help themselves...

Dumping? (TMI sorry) I gotta know
oldoneyoungagain replied to Pam Peltz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks DL, actually it was my fault as I put myself in the coma, but didn't go into the coma until I got to the emergency room, as I knew within minutes what I had done. Stupid mistake on my part, but was under a lot of stress as my husband was seriously, seriously ill. I grabbed my regular insulin, rather than my long acting insulin (which I take more of) and injected myself with amount of units I use for long acting. But that is neither here or there. My concern is that I have had dumping syndrome for years, even on this liquid diet for pre-op I've been having issues this past week, and that is were my concern comes in. But I definitely will be discussing with my surgeon or just might call the Nut next week to see what I should consume to get blood sugars to a safer level if I have low blood sugar issues after surgery. Thanks I will actually post what I find out because as we all know, fat and sugars can cause dumping and hypoglycemia and being a diabetic we were taught what to do to get those blood sugars back to safe level. But in this case eating a mass amount of sugar, or even glucose tablets will probably cause a vicious cycle being a bypass patient. So will keep you informed of what I find out. Thanks. -
Dumping? (TMI sorry) I gotta know
oldoneyoungagain replied to Pam Peltz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
DL thanks for websites, read them and very helpful. Do have a question though. I'm a diabetic and have had my blood sugars drop as yours did. But because I haven't yet had bypass I could chew glucose tablets, eat a tube of frosting, drink chocolate syrup. All of which is really high in sugar which with the bypass I'm sure it won't help the situation if sugar causes dumping. So what did you do to get your blood sugars back up? When sugars drop that low, I know for a fact we don't have time to call our doctor and I didn't pose this question to the Nut as that didn't even come to my mind. So any advice or information you can give would be appreciated. I've gone into a diabetic coma before from low blood sugars so this really scares me. -
Plastic surgery has anyone
Cat Hernandez replied to Milli2mini's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had plastic surgery on 12/2/2017 with Dr Galvez in TJ MX and one of the best decisions ever. Due to excess skin as a result of gastric bypass surgery in 8/2015 in California, I had excess skin and so Dr Galvez did a butt lift / BBL, Thigh lift and Breast Lift with implants. I'm very happy. -

Has anyone heard of Malabsorption Gastric Bypass
RickM replied to Sharon B A's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Did he just not do any stomach reduction at all, or did he make a pouch type structure like a traditional RNY gastric bypass? If he made a pouch, even a larger one, and connected it well downstream to provide DS-like malabsorption, that would be what is known as a distal RNY, which is rarely done, but is a cousin to the traditional RNY which is primarily a restrictive procedure with a minimal amount of malabsorption added. Another possibility is that he did a DS type of intestinal routing but with a large stomach pouch similar to an RNY, and this would be a Scopinaro procedure, which was a precursor to the standard or traditional BPD DS and was rarely done in the US. Another possibility from your description is something like the old jejunolileal bypass which was a purely malabsorptive procedure done in the 60's and 70's that kept the stomach intact along with the duodenum and some portion of the small intestine but bypassed the majority of it, reconnecting things down near the colon. It was abandoned owing to a lot of complications though he may have done some less malabsorbing variation. It was mostly replaced with the now traditional RNY gastric bypass. I'm sorry that you didn't get what you were expecting, but you should be able to make this work. It is important, however, that you get a clear understanding of what exactly he did (get a copy of the surgical report for your records) so that you, and any doctor who may need to work on you in the future for whatever reason, has a good understanding of how your insides now work. -
I was banded almost 5 years ago. I lost 55lbs over a very long period of time and from what I honestly think was just hard work and not much help from the band. I hate my band. It hurts. I feel like it's violent when I get stuck (often) and I can feel my port all the time for FIVE years. Sigh. Eating is stressful and to top it off I've gained every ounce back. I sometimes eat 2 bites can't eat another bite longingly look at my healthy or even healthy-ish food and an hour later eat Cookies because I am starving. I feel like my eating habits have become worse because of the band and at this point I'm totally out of control. I'm excited about revising and petrified too. I would like the sleeve but I'm so afraid I will eat thru it like I did with the band. I hear "it's so different" but I wonder if that applies to people like me that ate around the band. Waited for food to pass then slid junk down. I suppose I could fail at the bypass as well. I'm wondering if anyone here has had a similar experience with the band and been successful with the sleeve or failed to lose with the sleeve as well. Any and all advise would be so appreciated!!!
