    Progress 7 Weeks Out

Do you mean you had sleeve to bypass revision surgery OP? Was it more for reflux than weight loss? Could you share some more info that would help others on their journey? Even if not - well done you on your loss and getting back on track.
  2. Awesome ! ! ! Hope everything goes through. . . I knew Dr. Riley was leaving this year sometime as he was my assisting surgeon on my revision and Dr. Michel told me that Dr. R was leaving as well. It really sucks because I have a friend looking into VSG and she's hitting roadblocks too.

    Progress 7 Weeks Out

I don't know how much this will help. My highest weight presleeve was 283 pounds(p) in 2014. When I got to the table, my weight was 243p. My lowest weight postsleeve was 181p. 2017 started gaining weight and really bad GERD. It took until 09/25/2023 to have revision. I am now GERD free and losing weight. I have no regrets. Fight for your health like your life depends on it, and that's what I did. Yes, sleeve to bypass. Sent from my SM-G996U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    FOOD RESTRICTIONS

Thanks UnderTheCaliSun for your answer. So what do you usually have for your breakfasts? No, I never drink with any of my meals. I wait at least 1/2 hour after a drink before I eat. I then wait at least 1/2 hour after eating before I have a coffee or any other drink at all. I am seeing both my Dietician and my Bariatric GP this coming Tuesday. So I'm looking forward to having a talk with both of them to see if maybe I need to have my new tummy revised.

Port pain how long and how much

did you had other symptom beside the pain, was it red or something? i've been band for 6 months, and if I sleep on my side of on my tumy, I need help to get out of bed in the morning and the pain is excruciating it can last a few days then go away for a few weeks then come back. I've notice that my scare is hurting as well even though the is changing color(fading away). I just saw my surgeon two weeks ago, I don't really want to go and see him again. + Im scared he would say I need port revision or something... is there ennyone in the same situation as me... Thanks Julie

    REALISTIC WEIGHT LOSS

I'm 5'6 and my doc doesn't seem to think I'll have any issues getting to a 'normal' BMI....even though I'm a revision, I guess we'll see!!! All I know at this point is that even 5 weeks out, it's easier eating post RNY than it ever was with a band! HW 312, pre-op (lap-band) 294, pre-op (RNY) 255, surgery date 2/11/13, goal weight 154, current weight 226.6
  8. Just an update. I had my band removed on April 6 and revised to a Gastric Bypass at the same time. This was the best thing I ever did for myself. I am so happy with the results and realize now that I should have done this a year ago. I had trouble with the band since day 1. I had a lot of scar tissue built up around the band and it was rubbing against my liver. I am enjoying life so much right now. I am sleeping through the night which I haven't done in over a year with the reflux and pb'ing every night. It even gave me pneumonia once. And I can EAT. I am having to be careful because I am od'ing on fruits and vegetables which I could not eat the entire time with the band with the exception of bananas and pureed veggies. I have been able to eat everything I have tired without any issues. I love my bypass. I haven't lost much since surgery (20 pounds) but I am near the end of my journey. It's been a long 3+ years but so worth it.
  9. I am revising to a sleeve. Since I could not afford self pay and cant get insurance I managed to scrape up enough money to get the PCIP insurance ... They will cover revisions.. They did an upper gi and the lady asked me how in the world I was eating ? I told her not very well .My band has so much damage, scar tissue that liquids barely go through my band .. Doc told me there are ppl with band issues and then there is me ! Mine are bad basically . He told me to come back next week for and egd, they stick a tube down my throat to see if my ban d has erroded through my stomach , he suspected it has . Sounds all bad huh ? It is problem no one is in a hurry to get it fixed ! The insurance corrdinator is an idiot ! She was basically telling me my insurance most likely won't pay for anything when I know they very well will .. she really made me mad . She had never dealt with my insurance yet was telling me she didnt even know that PCIP was not through an employer I guess cause its not what I wanted to hear .. anyway I had a sleep study done to see if I have sleep apnea . So hopefully will know more in the next dayor so ?? he also told me if i dont revise to a sleeve because of my PCOS that with in 2 months of band removal i will gain back the rest of my weight and will contiune to regain about 30% more weight . HE also said due to the PCOS with out a sleeve i will get diebetes with in 5 yrs ! LOVELY ! All in all i was discouraged, Mainly because the insurance lady didntknow what she was talking about and it pissed me off. Im just not sure if this is par for the course or not ? Im not sure why i feel the way i do ?

    My story--banded for 9.5 years.

Your story is a great example of why the old 4cc band (and other old models) are no longer used in the United States. It makes me incredibly sad that so many people run off to Mexico to save a few bucks, end up with the 4cc band, and have the exact same issues you're having. Thankfully, problems such as yours are rare with the new generation of bigger bands when the patient is compliant with the rules and their surgeon. Good luck with your Sleeve revision.
  11. I highly recommend Dr. David D Kim in Colleyville. He did my band to sleeve revision on 9/27 and I am doing great. He is EXTREMELY compassionate and understanding. His office staff have been nothing but great. Plus, he performs his surgeries at Forest Park Medical Center in Dallas. What a great hospital!!!! It was a great experience (hospital wise) and I would definitely go back there again if ever needed. Dr. Kim's website is www.drdkim.net. Check it out and give him a call. I don't think you will be disappointed....I am definitely not!!! Debra Band to Sleeve Revision 9/27/10 Dr. David D Kim
  12. Hi ladies, its been awhile since I last posted. I seen the doc. today and decided to have my band removed. I was scheduled for port revision in april and the week of surgery changed my mind. I should be having surgery in the next few weeks. I feel its the best choice. The past year and a half have been difficult, I was vomiting, burping excessively, coughing and basically unhappy with the whole thing. I'm still taking my Water aerobics class and have lost 10 pds. I'm getting stronger and now taking classes on saturday. they can vary from kickboxing, zumba, ect. ladies keep up the good work. Sandy
  13. My surgeon mentioned that bypass is the better option for those with GERD, but didn't push. I am not thrilled about the thought of re-routing my digestive track so I like the idea of the sleeve much more. My surgeon did say that if my reflux gets uncontrollable/intolerable, the only solution is to revise to bypass. I will go in knowing that revision to bypass is a possibility for me, but hope for the best.
  14. Hi dawnae, Welcome to LBT and congratulations on your decision to become healthier. Recovery time does vary from person to person. I know some ladies on here who have got up and gone shopping the very next day. I've been banded twice (it slipped once after 18 months so I had a revision). After the first surgery, I was pretty useless for about 5 days. I tried to go shopping about 4 days out, but it was with my mom who's a marathon shopper and about an hour into it I felt dizzy and nauseous. This time however, I've felt pretty great. I was banded on Friday and could have gone back to work on Monday, had my husband let me lol. My surgeon recommended that I not lift anything heavier than a yellowpages phone book. We live in a large city, so our yellowpages are quite heavy ... but probably not as heavy as a 6 month old. You'll probably want to have an extra pair of hands around for a week or two and definitely talk to your surgeon about it. Good luck with your surgery. All will go well I'm sure and you'll be able to keep up with those two rugrats in no time at all
  15. I just had a port revision a few weeks ago (mine was tipped and they couldn't access it). Mine is right on the waistline, so I'm no help to you there, but I wanted to reassure you that it's a pretty minor operation and I was feeling great within a few days. They didn't use general on me, it was conscious sedation (they give you something to relax you through an iv, but don't put you out). I don't remember a thing. As with most things, it varies from doc to doc. Some will do it with a local right in their office. I was happy to be put down - less nerve wracking if you ask me!

    1 year out today

I had my gb out in February. I had some discomfort, but I was also scoped, and had additional scar tissues/adhesions taken down from various parts of my abdomen. I was up and walking within a couple of hours of waking up from VSG revision. I wake up super slow, and need a lot of time. The quicker you're up and walking the better you'll feel. You'll do great ! ! !

    1 year out today

Cajun, thin, chancie, and katt, thank you all so very much. I love ya too thin, you've been right beside from the beginning, along with cajun and chancie. It's been a crazy year, but we're all doing it, and doing it BIG ! ! ! lillita, don't let my leak worry you. I was a revision, had tons and tons of scar tissue from the band slowly destroying my stomach tissue. I knew going in my risks were way higher. If you have faith in your surgeon, and he has positive stats for complications, please know you are doing something fabulous not only for yourself, but your family. My son(12 yrs old) has admitted that he loves that I'm not fat anymore. He loves that we go, go, go, go and I'm not sleeping all the time, hurting, and not being able to do certain things because I was too fat. Kids love us, but our obesity and inability to participate in certain activities affects them tremendously. Thank you for the sweet compliments. Leaks are very rare. My surgeon is extremely skilled, and truly an amazing surgeon not only in the bariatric world, but as a combat surgeon as well. I mean, he puts troops back together overseas. I do not blame him for my leak. I knew that I was more likely to have complications. I wasn't shocked when I had a leak, honestly when I passed the first 2 leak tests, I was amazed. It was that stinkin' final leak test that got me LOL. Go in positive, if you believe in a higher power, pray, talk to him/her, and ask for grace, peace, and for them to guide your surgeon. You'll love the life that the sleeve affords you.
  18. I know a lot of people who have trouble with acid reflux and never had a band at all. Will your ins. pay for revision to by pass?
  19. I had band to sleeve revision on June 6th 2016 I had horrible acid reflux with my band ! Now I don't even need the Prilosec and I feel awesome! Sorry your having such trouble but hopefully they can fix it without bypass! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  20. Here's my story, it's kind of long but I'll try to keep it short. June 30th I found a revision surgeon in Mexico who was able to take out my band and do a sleeve in one surgery. He is board certified in bariatrics (in MX) and is the president of the Mexican College of Bariatrics. Anyway, shortly after surgery, I got horrible GERD. Started off with one prilosec a day, quickly moved to two, and Gaviscon for symptoms, then on to dexilant. After a couple of days the dexilant wasn't working completely and I had to add some pepcids at night. I went to a local bariatric surgeon and he told me that because I had the revision in one surgery, that there was absolutely no way that my sleeve was the right shape. He said that the surgeon would have had to cut around the area of the band, leaving an area where acid would get caught and cause GERD forever. He said my only options were either: to take PPIs forever for the GERD or revise to bypass. And, insurance would never cover the revision to bypass. He said it was too early to do any kind of contrast study and told me to come back in three months. Yesterday I ran across this story: https://houstonsleevesurgeon.com/interesting-case-severe-acid-reflux-after-gastric-sleeve-surgery/ This patient's case is so much like mine. She had GERD for 10 years and mine has just started, but similar. She was "placed on escalating doses of PPIs in hopeless attempts to control her symptoms" and had "an incompletely resected gastric sleeve". In other words, it was pretty much what the bariatric surgeon had told me: "A retained gastric fundus may contribute to intermittent relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter leading to reflux. Furthermore the gastric fundus may allow for an acid pocket to form in the vicinity of the gastric cardia leading to acid reflux. A retained gastric fundus may also cause delayed gastric emptying further exacerbating acid reflux. The gastric fundus is a posterior structure and it can easily be incompletely resected during sleeve surgery. " So, I contacted the doctor that wrote this and he wrote me back and we've emailed back and forth a bit. He is telling me that - if the surgeon left gastric fundus then it would be an easy fix to resect it and avoid conversion to bypass. He also said I would need endoscopy and a contrast study to determine what is going on with my sleeve. I see a GI on Tuesday and I hope he will help me with this. I'm excited about the prospect of getting rid of this GERD and keeping my sleeve, but this surgeon is in Houston. I'm in Florida. He suggested I find a reflux specialist or a surgeon here that could handle my case. If - the surgeon left fundus - I would have to find a surgeon here that would be willing to resect the fundus. That's clearly not the surgeon in town that told me "PPIs or bypass" I would have to find someone who would be willing to try the procedure that this Houston doc is suggesting. This is going to be difficult - and possibly expensive.

    Band > Sleeve now what?

I say the same thing, about a 3rd revision, but for different reasons than most wls peeps. I gained almost 100 lbs (was "only" a 100 lbs overweight with no cormorbidities when I had my rny in 12/2001) starting at 6 1/2 years post rny, due to medications that caused both a chemically induced obsession with food and effected me metabolically, even though I threw up almost everything I ate, due to a gi bleed history from rny, for years. And my gastric bypass was reversed in 9/2010. I remain though in the wls communities to be a supportive peer, even though my responses are not necessarily popular. I'm not anti-rny, though nor anti-wls . I am saying that is it possible that you're on medications that can cause either weight gain or stalls weight loss. Or do you have a health history such as PCOS, thyroid, etc that sometimes can be problematic, as far as easier weight gain and/or slower weight loss? There's not much I haven't seen or heard in the almost 15 years I've participated in wls communities. I've seen people not be able to eat much and regain all their weight back. I've seen people be able to eat everything, i.e. my 13 1/2 year post rny sister who's maintained 95% of her weight loss and doesn't follow a bariatric regimen at all, but she does work out A LOT and is tiny, is super healthy and has never had one complication, doesn't dump, etc, as well as some other people I know. I don't talk about how I lose weight, but it wouldn't work for me, to follow a newbie bariatric regimen, even with thyroid and metabolic issues. As starvation no longer works. I'm OK with being 65-70 lbs lbs and almost 10 sizes smaller than my biggest both before bariatric surgery and after bariatric surgery (I was a size 24/3-4x both in 2001 and in 2009). I'm on average now of 12/14 and misses XL in most clothes. Sometimes smaller, sometimes bigger, depending on who makes the clothes. If you feel overall good, it might be easier on you both physically and mentally to concentrate on weight lost, not weight found. I choose to concentrate on being a 12/14 vs a 24 than the 2/4 I was, at my smallest. But if you do want to lose more weight, maybe it might help to rule out obstacles such as medical and medication issues that can cause weight gain or hamper weight loss. Hope this helps... Best of luck to you...

    Band > Sleeve now what?

True. The decision is difficult. I postponed for almost a year. First just the fill of the band was removed (I had terrible volume reflux and hiatal hernia) and I tried lets wait and see. Then the band was removed and the reflux got even worse. I got revision to MGB a whole year later after I considered revision for the first time. I had problems for years and maybe should have gotten revision way earlier but as you said yourself: the decision is a difficult one. ETA: when the band was removed it already had started to migrate into the stomach wall. Gastroscopies (and I had plenty of them) didn't show the migration and I was lucky that the band was removed in time.

7 Months and Feeling Like a Success

It was a tough decision - especially since I revised only 9 months after having my band installed. But once I got it in, and wasn't losing weight (and having such difficulty with fills and restriciton), I started researching other options. When I found the success that everyone had with the sleeve, I was blown away. I went to MX for both surgeries, but with different doctors. I thought I was crazy paying so much money for surgery in one year, but guess what? I'm SO happy I did it. If I hadn't, I'd still be exactly like I was in my before picture .

Looking To Start The Gastric Bypass Buddy Threads

Hello KB I haven't had my surgery.....I had to restart the process. I had my lapband removed 2/2010 and went back to that surgeon in Oct 2011 for gastric bypass but, after talking with my PCP she wants me to see the bariatric group involved with her practice. So started the process back up. Attended my seminar on 3/12 and now seeing the surgeon and psych therapist on 3/29 to get the ball rolling. I was told this is still considered revision surgery so will go quicker than someone who hasn't had the lapband or gastic prior. That got me excited and I can't wait to get started. Did you get the date of your surgery today?
