I agree with most everyone that there is little you can do about stretched and ripped (let's get real) skin. However, don't accept that you must pay for tummy-tucks or anything else. My insurance paid for my abdominoplasty (tummy-tuck), and had approved my thighs had I continued. I wasn't worried about my arms, but I could have made similar cases and had insurance pay. Remember: "Reconstructive." Start documenting rashes, back pain, infections, etc. and your plastic surgery becomes a "reconstructive" surgery rather than a cosmetic one. Because mine were reconstructive mine were 100% paid by my insurance. Good luck, Tek

I don't think it matters if you lose it quickly or slowly. If there's a difference, it's probably negligible, because stretched out skin is stretched out skin. It might not get that stretched out if someone is 20 lbs overweight, but at 100 lbs or more, a lot of the skin just isn't going to bounce back. I wouldn't try to intentionally slow down my weight loss. You want to lose as much as you can during the first 12-18 months, when you're in the "honeymoon" period, because it gets a lot harder after that. Of course, follow your clinic's plan and don't starve yourself, either. You want to stay healthy. the cost depends on how much you have done, and again where and by whom. I had a face/neck lift, but I don't think most people do. But then, I'm also in my 60s, which was another factor in choosing to get one. Lower body lift or tummy tuck (tummy tuck is just the front part - lower body lift is both front and back) is the most common surgery people get- so if you just get that, it'd be a lot less than $60,000. Quotes I was getting for my lower body lift (which as I said is usually more than the tummy tuck since they do both front and back) were $16,000-$21,000. But I also had mine done in Chicago, so I was playing Chicago prices. And I chose well-known surgeons for my consults. But that surgery was also five years ago - so I'm not sure what people are paying these days. But at least that gives you an idea.

Yes I did 2 huge amazon orders. Lol. I believe I have everything. I ordered this food kit just for bariatric surgery. I have a my vitamins, I even bought some under garmets for the surgery too. To lessen having loose skin plus skin tightening cream. What do you have so far? Plus I got the food measuring cups Sent from my SM-S908U using BariatricPal mobile app

unfortunately, yes. I had my surgeries (three of them) over the last four years. The first one I had three years after my WLS, so that would have been in 2018. I was told by people on this site (BariatricPal) and/or a similar one to expect to pay about $8000-$10,000 per procedure. with a lower body lift counting as two procedures since they do both front and back. I had three consultations in the US, and those estimates were pretty accurate. I had a fourth estimate by a plastic surgeon in Mexico, and his estimate was about half that, if I remember correctly (however, I decided to stay in the US) although keep in mind that it really depends on where you have it done, and the experience & reputation of the surgeon. You're probably going to pay more in New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles than you will in Knoxville, Tennessee. Also, a surgeon who's nationally known and has 20 years of experience is probably going to be more costly than someone with only a couple years of experience under their belt. Other procedures I had were breast lift, arm lift, and face/neck lift. Those all fell into that range too (each of those are considered one procedure). Face/neck lift was a little cheaper, I think - but not much. I think it was $7000. insurance usually doesn't cover it, but if you have some medical issues due to the loose skin - like a chronic rash that doesn't clear up with more conventional treatments, then it *might* cover it. Or at least some of it. If you do have such issues, go see your doctor about it so its documented. Then if you decide to pursue plastic surgery and think part or all of it should be covered because of medical issues caused by the skin, you'll have documentation of the problem - because the insurance company will want to see that before approving it.

200 lbs - wow! Well done and congratulations! Was it very expensive to remove the loose skin
-
there's nothing you can take to prevent it. How much you have and how much elasticity it still has depends on age and genetics, as summerseeker said, as well as how much weight you lose. If you're talking 100+ lbs, you will probably have loose skin. Seriously stretched skin is damaged skin and isn't going to bounce back. I lost over 200 lbs so I had a ton of it. It was easy to hide in clothes so no one knew it was there, but I eventually had it removed because *I* knew it was there, and it was driving me crazy...

Hello and congrats on your surgery date. If you have any questions, ask away, none are silly I had my hair dyed pre surgery. I had my bottom length hair cut twice. My long straight, hair made me look so much balder. Once to shoulder length then a very necessary pixie cut. I have lost hair at other times of my life when going through surgery so did not bother to try expensive treatments. I read others say nothing stopped the shedding so that was good enough for me I was already using a stick so continued with it for a while. Walking is recommended by everyone. I love it still. Try and keep people at a distance in the last two weeks, especially school children. I know this advice is a waste but its the only way you can be sure of no virus cropping up the last week before surgery. I bought a thermos cup to keep my drinks warm. My stomach would not tolerate cold drinks. Like hair loss, skin sagging after surgery is a matter of age, weight and genetics. I believe the chemists who have nothing to do with the cosmetic industry. They say nothing helps your skin regain its shape after loosing a ton of weight if you are a certain age and your skin has no elasticity left.

Let us talk loose skin and muffin tops
Alex Brecher replied to omrhsn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Losing a large amount of weight can result in loose skin, especially in areas such as the midsection. While exercise and skin tightening exercises can help improve the appearance of loose skin a little, they will not eliminate it. However, maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine can help improve skin elasticity and strengthen the underlying muscles. In most cases, surgery will be necessary to remove excess skin. -
Thanks - super helpful. Did you take anything to prevent stretch marks/ lose skin?

Can tolerate more than I think I should?
Zuzanna replied to LivDee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hello LivDee, I had a gastric sleeve 13 years ago, and yes I tested the water on what I could eat or not eat. I lost nearly 50kg and then put half back on simply by drinking alcohol. I stopped drinking and went on to have a baby who is healthy and now nearly 8. I can tell you that even though you stomach may stretch it wont stretch to what it was before and I am still now restricted as to the amount I can eat. In most cases an entree size meal. It is also dependant on a few factors, the more protien in a meal the less I can eat, there are also foods i dont digest well. It is really important to always chew your food really well. I was 142kg when I had the sleeve done and today sit at 114.9kg. I had made it to 92kg but when I added stupid calories like alcohol and sugar it will catch up and you can still put on weight. But the good thing is you can continue to loose weight but it does get a little harder with cravings when you expand you tummy. The other thing if you haven't adressed it and I say this everyone starting this journey, look at your relationship with food and recognise always why and what you put in you mouth. My relationship with food has changed but it has been a journey and not the prettiest one but I can recognise and analyse and make change more easily now than before. I still have a way to go and will be going in for a sasi and to get my hernia fixed, but my headspace is even better today. I guess in otherwords take it easy try and follow what the Team tells you and be kind. Each day is a new adventure and take this as a jouney of empowerment and discovery about you. This really will change you so don't be scared to seek counselling if you need to as new situations will come forth that you have not dealt with and this can make you want take in the wrong things. As for after op eating follow the stages while your stomach is healing if you eat too much it can damage it. Its also great you are recognising what you feel is different and asking questions because that is how you get to know more about the new you. Keep going you got this. Yeah, I'm unlikely to be able to afford skin removal surgery. I'll try saving and see how I go, as I'd certainly take that option if it was available to me, but I'm also realistic and refuse to hang my contentment on a surgery that may or may not happen. I like myself just fine now, loose skin and all! Sure, I could probably escape on a strong gust of wind like a sugar-glider, but I'm calling that my superpower. 🙃 -

I have to agree. I don't think I will ever do the excess skin removal surgery. From what I read, it is more painful and takes longer to recover from compared to WLS. But never say never, right. For now, I will just try to get flattering clothes and adopt your attitude. Tucking my shirts helps which I'm doing now. -

I once bought a cream that will supposedly help burn the fat and firm up the skin. It was a big mistake but I learned my lesson. Too good to be true. -

Yeah, we're pretty much stuck with the loose skin. I keep my sense of humour about it, and stick to high-waisted undies and jeans/pants. Can't do much about my crepey arm skin, especially in summer, but they thankfully don't bother me. I find dressing myself post-goal is a lot of "smoke and mirrors", with a healthy dose of "eh, I don't care" for the bits I can't hide. -

Thank you so much. That was really helpful. I guess I can wear my pants differently and try to tuck the loose skin inside it. Let us see how it goes. It is not too bad like some of the photos I've seen but still. My thigh and butt have also oozed down my thighs (on the inner side). I hope I can still wear shorts when I go on vacation next lol. Those creams are useless and it should be illegal to sell such products. -

Arabesque replied to omrhsn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Congratulations are your weight loss. Whoo hoo! Unfortunately, you can’t do anything to get rid of that loose skin except surgery. It’s been stretched out & won’t go back to what it was. I describe it as being like a well used hair band or a elastic in well worn old knickers. Once the snap is gone it’s gone. Working out won’t help as it’s loose skin not loose muscle. You’ll build & refine the muscles behind the skin but not the skin itself. And those creams that supposedly tighten skin don’t work either or at the very least don’t help with the excess skin we usually have after weight loss. (They’ll make your skin feel nice & soft though.) There is shape wear available that has been designed for men which will help control your muffin top & abdomen.. You could give that a try see how it goes. Apart from the upper arms, inner thighs & my butt (which has oozed down my thighs) I have a little tummy pooch but find full briefs are usually enough to keep it under control even under close fitting clothing. I do find good posture does help. Slouching when sitting or standing makes that pooch more obvious, I weakened & bought some you beaut fancy & certainly not cheap cream that was supposed to tighten skin & lighten stretch marks. See results in a month. Well it’s been two months. No change to my stretch marks or my skin. At the very least I’d hoped for maybe a little improvement in the creepiness but no. Should have saved my money. -

I've lost almost 65 kg so far and very happy with my progress. My mid-section was the largest and still is. Before the WLS I had big thighs and even bigger bum but not so much fat on my upper body. Hopefully I will continue to lose more weight (I've 15 Kg to go) and it will come out of my thighs. The bum is almost gone lol. My question is about the loose skin and muffin tops. I can wear size 34" pants (down from 54") now which will fit nicely but will end up with a muffin top and loose skin draping over the belt. I'm not too concerned about the loose skin in my forearms or thighs since it is not that visible. Is there anything that can be done to improve / reduce the loose skin on my belly other than surgery? Workout maybe? I'd also love to hear about your experiences on this. -
Any success stories that started as slow weight loss? (MGB)
learn2cook replied to amylittlelbs's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
We are such individuals! I heard Dr. Yeo yesterday (Cambridge University weight loss specialist) explain that there are over 200 genes involved in obesity, so we all loose differently. I am loosing slowly and still loosing 18 months out. I am loosing differently than how I lost pre surgery. Lol, I’m not gaining it back like I used to do. It really is a different way of living and checking my feelings. There’s no magic weight elevator down. Weight loss does take sustained effort over time. I’ve had to really dig deep and get therapy and do the work. You have made great progress. If you’re still hungry, talk with your doctor. Get to the bottom of it. Is it your head hunger and need a therapist or do you have a medical issue like needing metformin? Does your center have ongoing support groups? Are you working through dropping other medications? There’s so much going on, you’re doing awesome weight wise! -
How to get rid of horrible taste and over salvation
summerseeker replied to susanjane111's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the most loathsome taste until I started eating better foods, defo ketosis as everyone has said. I too had lots of saliva, I take anti nausea medication and that helps. Occasionally my mouth fills with saliva and I know I will vomit. I have eaten too quick, eaten something my stomach objects to, overeaten or a few time I have come a cropper with pepper and grape skins getting stuck in my tiny tummy. I don't vomit food just foamy saliva. We call this the foamies. Go back to your team and get some more info if you need it. Hugs -
For those getting ready for your surgery (YAY!) I just wanted to pop in with my experience (I am 2 weeks post op tomorrow). I see a lof of 'problems' and sometimes I think its easy for us to talk about negative or 'not great' things trying to help others, but then it makes it seem like everyone has those issues, when im not sure thats the case. For ME.... no nausea. not once. no vomiting. no tiredness. no dizziness. I did have more pain than i expected, but it lasted less than a week. Food wise.... I am eating around 700-800 calories a day. hitting protein goals on puree/ semi soft diet. Struggling to get in enough water, but doing my best. Not back at the gym yet but thinking probably next week, based on how i feel (obviously no weights yet lol). My tastes in foods have not changed at all. I have not had any bad reactions to any foods. All in all.... sometimes i wonder if i HAD surgery, aside from I can't eat much at a time. But, really.... I kind of think thats ideal LOL I haven't lost much weight yet but I remind myself that my body is still healing, With a (relatively) low BMI, I will lose slower anyway, and the slower you lose, the less loose skin you have. so.... #perspective All of yall are amazing and strong! ...............................

Phentermine
Rebekahlynn9 replied to youngmilf's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
I'm 6 months into my gastric sleeve and my dr prescribed low dose Phentermine to break my stall, very short term..... it worked and I'm back to loosing again. I only take it as needed to break through plateaus. 3-4 days max then off till I hit another stall. It's working for that purpose, no serious side effects thank goodness, but it does give me crazy energy. -
Surgery more than 2 years ago?
BriarRose replied to Bandedbut's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved a dozen years ago. I was in my mid 50's. I started at 320 pounds, lost 25 pre surgery, then lost to about 175. I stayed at about 180 for many years, but gained after some very tough emotional times over a few years to 220. But kept that 100 pounds off. About 4 years ago, I decided to try to lose 10 pounds in a year. I lost 10 in a few months, doing nothing but being intentional with what I ate; and going back to protein and veggies first. Over two years I lost 40 pounds, realizing that I needed to learn how to maintain my weight - so I would stop losing weight every so often (usually after 8 to 10 pounds down) and NOT lose more, but maintain where I was. How much was I eating, of what, when.... how much was I moving... watching myself and re learning ! I maintained my 175 pounds for another full year - about 7 months ago I decided to lose another 10 pounds. Got there and a few under. I am finally at 29 BMI ! I weigh 162. Less than I did in college in the 1970's !! Loose skin ? Yes. But at 67 next month, I do not want any elective surgeries. I wear a size 14 petite jeans. I have a ton more energy at 67 then I had at 54. I am still working and I organic garden, raise laying hens for organic eggs. I never liked carbonation, so that was never an issue. I eat a healthy diet. I grow fresh greens and veggies. I eat fresh fruits. I eat kind of low carb - if I have a sandwich with bread, for lunch I won't eat carbs for breakfast or dinner. I eat a treat every day. Even when losing weight. But now I can enjoy an oreo, or 2 little dove chocolates..... Or one skinny cow dessert. I had company for dinner this weekend. I BBQed burgers. I ate a half of a hamburger - half the bun, and some fresh fruit salad. I was almost on over fill ! I use most carbs as sprinkles. If I eat Asian, I order chicken and veggies. I sprinkle rice on top. Steak ? Sure. crumble part of a baked potato with it. I steam most veggies at home. I make fish on the grill a couple times a week and then make it into a salad the next day for lunch. I eat differently than I did before. I am healthy and happy. No regrets at all. -
Great job. Thanks for sharing. Of the whole bariatric experience, saggy skin scares me. I know plastics is an option, but...

BARELY any weight loss in first two weeks??
SacB replied to MaameWata's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Contrary to a lot of people, I actually want to lose the weight slowly! My rationale is that because I'm 69, I'm probably going to have a ton of loose skin after reaching my goal, especially if I drop the weight quickly. I'm still 5 months pre-op, so have lots of time to prepare. -
I've never shared my photos of what the skin actually looked like, but I can tell you that most of us can easily hide the loose skin in clothes. I've had extensive plastic surgery (three of them, to be exact), but this is what I looked like BEFORE I had plastic surgery. See any loose skin? I promise you that it's there - this was after losing over 200 lbs, so I had a TON of it. But as you can see, it's not noticeable at all in clothes. I just tucked the stomach skin into jeans or "tummy control" leggings and wore slightly oversized, long-ish tops. Plus 3/4 length or longer sleeves to cover my batwing arms. No one could see my excess skin (except for my husband and doctor, of course...)
