Food Before and After Photos

Lol, I love how so many of us realize there’s no way we’re going to be able to eat all of whatever it is we’re having, and make sure to finish off the protein first. It’s always comical to me to see the meat “missing” in the Afters bc I do the exact same thing 😂 -
February 2019 weight loss buds
Sheribear68 replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
lol, well lying down and dying wasn’t an option so I chose plan A— survival 😂😂 Seriously though... thanks. It’s hard even now after 10 years to accept that what I did was quite phenomenal. In the moment, it was just surviving til the next step was over. I will say this though: people automatically assume getting cancer and being on chemo will make you emaciated— um... nope! I gained OVER 25 pounds of that hard-fought 40 and then added another 15 in the next year. The whole year of being on steriods, followed by the metabolic disaster of the chemo finally did in what my chronic dieting had not already destroyed. It took me a few years to admit it, but my metabolism was completely and hopelessly damaged. What funny is now that I know this, I see many many patients of mine who have also come out successfully the other side of chemo complain about inability to lose weight, pre-diabetes, and even full-blown type 2DM years later. Edited to add: It was a second cancer scare in early 2018 that got my butt motivated to do something like WLS to get this weight off. Not sure if everyone knows this, but the number one risk factor for ANY kind of cancer is obesity. Still being MO for 10 years post cancer was stressing me out so much. Luckily scare #2 was just that— a false alarm, but I’m thankful now that it happened bc it was the wake up call I needed to make this drastic of a lifestyle change. -
Woo hoo! A new milestone! My first soft foods day was Thursday. I had about 2oz of lowfat cottage cheese and it was divine lol. So weird that it felt like "enough" -- bc I love cottage cheese and used to just eat a big bowl of it. It's very exciting to realize that after just a few bites, I actually feel not just satiated, but not "yearning" for more, if that makes sense? It's a totally new feeling for me. I'd recommend you set a timer 30 minutes after your last fluid before you eat, then after eating set a timer for another 30 minutes before you have liquids again. Rinse and repeat. Best of luck!!!

Congrats! And...same here. I just started my soft foods on Thursday, and then last night - just for a moment, but still - I forgot about the "30 minutes before and after" and had a sip of tea right before I started my little bit of Cream of Wheat. I immediately was like "D'OH!" but it was okay I guess bc it had only been a little sip. Still, it kinda scared me. What I'm doing now is starting my phone timer 30 minutes before I know I should eat, to stop drinking. Then when done eating I set my phone timer for another 30 minutes to let me know I can drink liquids again. Hope that helps! -
Actually today is day 15, I had it on Aug 14. My surgeon advanced me to phase 3 when I saw him last Friday bc I was doing so well with phase 2.

Okay so had my 6 months PO visit with my surgeon this morning. Went well and I’ve lost 78 pounds since surgery day. Lol, he laughed bc I was disappointed it wasn’t an even 80. He told me that even if I didn’t lose another pound, he’s calling this a success, but said it’s totally reasonable (and doable with work and focus) to lose another 25 vanity pounds. It was nice to hear that as far as he’s concerned, it’s up to me and there won’t be judging either way. I’m at the tire shop getting a nail out of one of my tires, then off for a celebration pedi

Okay so I ended up NOT buying this dress bc it was fitting me a bit loose in places and they didn’t have one a size smaller, but I wanted to post anyway, lol I was struggling this afternoon and was grumpy and emotional so I went shopping to try on some clothes to refocus myself on my plan. Sigh....I want to wear shorter dresses so badly and my legs just look so chubby. Also, I get bruises on my shins all of the time at work

I'm planning in seeing my dietitian soon to help me get through this slump and will asj her about it. I'm also going to see my endocrinologist because my bs levels are still a little elevated and I need to see how to handle it. I definitely interested in doing low carb and the fasting to help get the sugars down!

February 2019 weight loss buds
Sheribear68 replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
This is where different clinics and surgeons really are apparent. We were all told that protein shakes never counted as water because they counted as “food”. Not even protein broth was to be considered fluid. Therefore we were told to have an absolute minimum 64 ounces water or else we wouldn’t have as much success. In the hospital, SF popsicles got counted as 1 ounce water, but besides that and zero cal sports drinks that was all we could count. And they watched... if you didn’t consume 64 ounces water in 24 hours, you weren’t allowed to be released. I was told by my insurance company that I was approved for one day only so i really felt the pressure to get the water in. Now though it feels weird and I feel really bad if I don’t have at least 80 ounces. I get so thirsty and headachy and I get cramps. I have no idea how people can drink so little bc I feel absolutely horrible unless I’m drinking all of the time -

Yes. The first time I was nauseous post-op was bc of soft foods. The next two days after I struggled with sipping anything. On the second night I drank a Gatorade zero, and then a protein shake and felt a lot better. I learned I need to eat every 2-3 hours or I feel nauseous. And the minute I wake up I have to start drinking water. -

Okay so I’m planning on a 24 hour fast tomorrow with some salted bone broth midday. I’ve got the day off and have many errands to run and a dental appt at 2:30. Pretty sure I’ve got a new cavity as the entire left back side of my mouth HURTS and I can’t even chew on that side. Weirdly I get cavities galore whenever I go through health and life stressors. My year of chemo in ‘09-10 left me with 4 of them. After tornadoes here last night left my Pilates studio still closed bc of lack of power, no classes today and I’m taking 3 classes tomorrow evening. Basically that means that it’s the perfect day to try a 24 hour fast. I plan on breaking it with an 11oz premier protein for 30gm (plus I’m sure my mouth will thank me for it). Question is what should I try to eat or do the NEXT day after this fast? -
Yes! It’s amazing for sure. I’m basically went into WLS primarily bc I desperately needed the metabolic reset. I knew my head was in the game. Hell, my head has been in the game for a very long time, but my poor body just would not do what I needed it to do. I would find myself constantly watching a clock and wondering how in the world I was gonna make it to the next appropriate eating time bc my body was CONSTANTLY sending out “I’m starving, feed me now!” Hormones. I bet my insulin resistance was off the charts because I could eat 2000k calories and want to punch someone in the face if they caused my eating to be delayed. I spent most of my awake time “hangry”. The suckiest part is I would eat low sugar, high protein and it wouldn’t make any difference. I didn’t want the food, my body was demanding it. Since surgery, it’s been a 180. Sweets never appealed to me anyway and I’m perfectly happy sitting down with 3 ounces of steak and a 1/2 cup salad. I meticulously log my food, but it’s because if I don’t, I will accidentally eat not enough. There are still many days where I struggle to get in enough. I literally just don’t desire it

I was doing great until yesterday. It was my follow up with the surgeon, I was 9 days post op. As I was getting ready, I started getting severely nauseous, I think just from dressing and putting makeup on. Or maybe I drank my protein shake too quickly, I don’t know. I didn’t puke but was just miserable with nausea. He cleared me to try soft foods, so I had 1/2 a string cheese and I chewed eat bite to oblivion but got even sicker. I have the scopolamine patch on, but I also took my dose of zofran (4 mg). I was able to sleep ok. But woke up severely nauseous again. This time I took 2 zofran which didn’t seem to help, and I started to panic so I took an anxiety med. I also went on a mile long walk bc I couldn’t seem to sit still. When I got home I did a guided meditation, and fell asleep for a couple of Hours. I was able to get done one premier protein shake, and like 8 oz of water and barely any Gatorade and now I’m nauseous again. I haven’t thrown up at any point since I got out of surgery. Any ideas on how to deal with nausea? Besides Zofran and the scopolamine patch? I would rather have searing pain then nausea, I just hate it. I’m miserable and too afraid to try soft foods. Thanks!

Wheee!!!! So glad you are feeling pretty good - same! We are gonna have so much fun and learn so much on this journey. I know it won't all be a piece of cake (pun intended lol), and I know I've got so much head work to do re: my relationship with food which has gotten SO hostile through the years...but I'm so eager and ready for that, and I'm so so happy to be here with my shiny new reset button hit and the fresh start I've needed for sooo long. Shockingly, I am not yet tired of liquids yet! I think it's prob bc of that 24 hour headache from hell that prolonged my "I can't look at food, much less want it" post-surgery feeling. Also I re-discovered the delicious comfort of sipping on warm beef broth and it makes me so happy lol. I can't stand the super sweet protein shakes so this is my salvation right now. I found myself hungry - true hunger - for the very first time since surgery today. But it was a friendly hunger - not that scary "oh no what do I do/what do I eat" kind that has dominated my life for so long...not sure if that makes any sense? -

Thank you so much! I'm feeling very good, considering I had surgery Monday, I'm cautiously optimistic that my healing is now going to be mostly up-up-up! My only "bad" time really was caffeine withdrawal (severe headaches for a day) which was totally my fault bc I just love my coffee and it was the one thing I didn't "wean." But it passed and whew thank God lol. And WOW you are super-close to surgery, hurray!! It'll be over and done before you know it, so excited for you! 🙌 I do have tips already, lol - I have family and close friends who've successfully gone through WLS and also have researched it forever - soooo I made some pre-op purchases that I'm very happy with/have been super helpful. Attached is a picture of LittleSprout baby food containers. Waaay back when my 1st child was a baby (22 years ago, Lord have mercy lol) - I was one of those "eager beaver" moms and I made most of his baby food from scratch (before I get too proud of that, I did not manage that enthusiasm for babies 2 and 3 ha ha). Anyway, prepping for this surgery I realized how much in common the food prep and portions would be to back in the baby days - and it all came back to me. So I ordered the baby food containers off of Amazon - which are SO HELPFUL. Lots of sizes, but I started with 2 oz - they are microwavable, dishwasher and freezer safe, woo hoo! Also I got some silver-sterling toddler sized flatware (a 2-set of spoon, fork, serrated knife - adorable really) that wasn't expensive and doesn't look like "baby gear," and a separate set of measuring spoons and cups just for myself. I haven't used the flatware yet, but it looks nice. I cleared out a portion of our pantry for "my stuff" 😎 So anyway, while of course it is not at all necessary to purchase gadgets and tools and such to be successful - I found it relaxing and reassuring to have just a few things special, just for me - for my journey. And these LittleSprout things are my new best friend lol. Cheaper than the top brands but just as good, so far. SO excited for you that your big day is almost here! Just think, by Christmas we'll be sharing "WHOA time has flown, look at how amazing we are" posts and pics! 😆 -
Following this topic bc it's of interest to me. I'm wanting to know about beyond Aleve and other NSAIDS. I'm curious about the "big guns" biologic medications for like Rheumatoid Arthritis which I have. Remicade IV is my drip - but haven't been able to get my infusion for months due to surgeries (2 including the GB RNY) which has left me reeling in inflammatory pain off and on.... I'm hopeful though, bc although RA is autoimmune, I know the extra fat doesn't help!

It's real. Here I am today in my outfit I'm wearing out tonight. I'm 133.2lbs this morning. Look ok clothed...but nekkid? Holy hell, man. Dim the lights. -

It's a mixed bag. I'm happy with where I am, I'm getting to where I am happy with my outward (dressed) appearance. It's progress. Need to get back to the Gym and get some more building done... been taking it a bit too easy lately trying to deal with the other BS. -
Got my date!!! August 19th
CrowLuv replied to TravMac's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello fellow August 19th-ers! I had my Gastric Bypass RNY that day, too - wheeled me in around 2:30pm (latest surgery time I've ever had, ha ha). I kept waiting to comment in here, nerves, maybe? But I've been keeping up as best as I can, sending you all my best wishes and shared crossed fingers and such. I love the "need a new word for piece of cake" humor haha. I should have chipped in here sooner (wait, another food term? LOL) - but better now than never. Day 2 (yesterday/Tuesday) was awful for me only bc of caffeine withdrawal, I was such a fool putting that off - it was the only part of this entire process I hadn't micromanaged into oblivion, like a child I just kept saying "will deal with it later" until dealing with it meant incapacitated with a severe headache that meds couldn't touch, yikes. Totally my bad. Other than that I feel like I'm healing fine, as far as I can tell "feeling" wise - headache easing off today (thank heavens), I can only get my sips of water in so far, and I am working that hard, no way will I let the deyhydration monster get me lol. But, the protein shake sips leave me feeling "too full" funnily enough. Will keep trying. Still feeling pretty groggy and foggy so I hope I don't re-post this or re-introduce myself later, forgetting I already posted ha ha. Sending my best wishes to my surgery soul siblings! ☺️ -

Sheribear68 replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Okay. So I’m here to post results of my 3 day playing around with more aggressive IF. I started with a 1.6 pound bounce from 170.8 to 172.4 (8-11, 8-18). That bounce really sucked bc from July 26-August 11th I had lost from 179, and I was finally finally on track to lose 10 pounds in a month. Well I’m happy to say that I got on the scale this morning (no poop in over a day now) and I’m at 169.0. Broke through the 170’s and finally have that 10 pound month. Woot! -

Oooh. Might have to get those recipes from you. I’m willing to give that a shot and see if I like it. For some reason, even 3 weeks PO (when I actually started eating purées) I could put down a lot of cottage cheese. It’s such a slider for me, which I love bc I can always count on it to bump my protein if I’m having an off day. -
Peggy now that your 4.5 years out from the VSG to sips revision how is everything going? I haven’t seen anyone else on these boards that far out from revision. Any updates on lifestyle, weight loss or regain, bathroom antics. Curious bc I am considering a VSG to sips revision. Thank you!

Lies to tell people about what surgery I am having
GreenTealael replied to a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Alright, who was confused (emoji reaction) by my joke ??? Tough crowd... 😂 I've lied to a lot of people (and told the truth to a lot of people too) the people ive lied to don't for a minute believe the BS I've told them. To my face they tell me i look wonderful but best believe they are talking about me behind my back wondering which terminal disease i have. The people ive told the truth were thoroughly satisfied because the mystery was solved with no work on their ends. The truth is just easier to maintain. Sherlock Syndrome. People suddenly become MI-5 when they can't figure something out. I have inboxes filled with "hey cuz, i hope all is well..." I thought i was maintaining my privacy. People are nosier now more than ever because the weight is staying off and sadly thats not common. Good Luck fellow fibbers ☺
