I have a lot of problems with the sweeteners in most shakes and powders. Sometimes just adding a few squirts of lemon (if you can handle the acidity) into a clear protein water helps -- or literally water it down until it's more palatable. I found mixing premier protein shakes with fairlife milk and/or coffee was a big help. (I don't like peach, but I like the sweetener in Isoflex's Peach/Mango Chiller -- and I can mask the flavour with lemon juice.)

I don't remember any specific food that gave me trouble. The advice I got was to try regular foods one at a time slowly so you can see how your body reacts. I have heard people say that they used to love food X but now it makes them sick or they lost their taste for it but that didn't happen to me. I had kind of a weird experience with salads an other raw vegetables - they went straight through me with hardly any digestion. Seriously, the toilet looked like I just overturned a bowl of salad into it. It didn't make me sick or anything, it was just strange. I was never a big salad eater to begin with but now I don't bother at all. During the thick liquids/soft solid stages I remember being frustrated at the limited options. I wasn't going to puree food in a blender or anything like that so I stuck to foods that were naturally the right texture. I ate a lot of scrambled eggs and yogurt during the soft solids stage. Two Good was my go-to brand of yogurt and I still eat it pretty often. It is low carb and they have several flavors. I'd also eat instant mashed potatoes thinned with broth or milks but that is a lot of carbs so maybe wasn't the best idea. I ate mostly soup during the thick liquids stage. Any cream of _____ soup should work OK. If there are chunks of meat or vegetables in it, you can strain them out. Split pea and tomato soup work too although I have never liked tomato soup. You can thin them with extra broth if it is too thick and strain or puree if it includes pieces of solid food. You'll feel a lot of restriction immediately after your surgery. The difference between feeling comfortably full and ready to vomit can be just one bite. You'll get a feel for it but you may mess up a couple times before that. The restriction lessens with time but I still cannot eat anywhere near as much as I could before the surgery. Sometime I catch myself thinking that I could eat a normal sized portion of food but I end up stopping 1/3-1/2 of the way through.

Ok, so I'm 2 years and 4 months out from my 1st surgery and 1 year 3 months out from my revision. I'm still losing (trying to stop losing but so far I'm still losing an average of 4 pounds per month) so I haven't experienced the rebound weight gain yet. I can tell you I eat popcorn all the time. I also eat smokehouse almonds, cheese cubes, salami and/or peperoni slices for snacks. I eat Rebel ice-cream, keto brownies, sliced apples mixed with fresh blueberries and raspberries, Greek yogurt with fresh berries and monk fruit sweetener mixed in, keto cake with sugar free icing, French toast with keto bread, fresh berries, and sugar free syrup. If I want "guilty" food, I have something like steak, 2 spoonfuls peas mixed with mozzarella cheese, and 2 spoonfuls of Bob Evans mashed potatoes. I don't tolerate carbs very well, so I have to be careful with them. I also have kettle chips fried in avocado oil, 1 packet (instead of my former usual 2-3) of oatmeal such as cinnamon apple or banana cream, and minestrone soup and crackers (only like 4 or 5). Everything is a balance. Nothing in excess, no large portions, no "off plan" foods too often. Just a little here and there and whatever you have should be fine. Just remember to keep working out, keep moving your body, keep prioritizing protein and you should be good. -
Need help with diet after post surgery weight gain!!!!!

I had sleeve 3.5 years ago and I gained all my weight back because I was too embarrassed to ask for help before it was too late. You already taken a big step in reaching out here for help. I would also reccomend that you make an appointment with your team for further support. I thought for sure mine was going to chastise me for messing up but that couldn’t have been further from what happened when i finally did. All they wanted to do is help. I ended up doing a revision but my preop diet was pretty doable and detoxed me from sugar and carbs. Mine was two shakes a day and then low carb dinner of 3oz lean protein with a cup to a cup And a half of lower carb veggies. Something like that may be a Reset of sorts but you shouldn’t do it without consulting a doctor. Anyways, doing that I noticed that each day it got easier and easier as my body stopped cravings the sugar and carbs so I didn’t feel like I was starving myself anymore. For me, that’s the biggest obstacle. If I’m not starving I can make the better choices. You may also reach out to your dietician. Be honest about what you are eating as ask for help to make small changes to get you back on track. Keep posting and let us know your progress of struggles. -
I started my 10 day pre op diet yesterday I need flavor!! I'm not big on the chocolate protein shakes so I just got to use up what I have was thinking about freezing it to make it like a ice cream so its something I can chew a little. Idk this is hard but I know I can do it just need to find new things to try

You can try. I've read other people have had good results with protein-shake popsicles, etc. My personal experience with it? Sucked.
I tried making 'fudgesicles' with a couple different flavors of a premade shake, as well as a protein powder I blended myself and all of them came out revolting? The powder ones, all the protein sunk to the middle; the premade shakes, the popsicle had a disgusting texture and the protein seemed to leave a weird fluffy film on the outside? I couldn't stomach it.
Maybe look into flavoring additives? I was able to have sugar-free coffee /soda syrup flavorings, sugar-free drink flavorings and baking additives like almond, rum or pepperment extract. The extracts helped me the most as they added no extra sweetener.
On the other hand, if you can get your hands on an unflavored/unsweetened protein powder, the syrup flavorings are perfect. I love to use Boost "Just Protein" (which is unflavored) with milk and a Chai-flavored sugarfree syrup.

Well for the shake since you are making it maybe you can just make Half and then take the ingredients with you to make the other half. Hopefully you won’t have to do it for too long. You should get to where you can drink more once the swelling goes down some more and eventually you ideally will be able to get all of your protein from food. in terms of what’s allowed at this stage though, I would try to stick to what your doctor has on their list. I think most people have scrambled eggs on either purée or soft foods. Is that on your list? Those could be made ahead and heated up if you have a microwave at work. -
Thanks. I had my one week post op today and the pathology came back and I did in fact have gall stones. My surgeon did not discuss the channel length with me. Nor did he give me the option to resize my sleeve. He believes that the risks are too great for the difference it would make for me but he did also do several tests to get a good picture of my sleeve before we landed on the SADI as opposed to the bypass. Perhaps if my sleeve was larger he would have steered me towards the bypass. My surgery was robotic this time my sleeve was just laparoscopic I’m curious now what my channel length is. Not that I really know what would better one way or another. So it turns out that my pain was almost entirely from gas because I was in a great deal of it until the morning of day when I finally passed a lot of gas and with each time I felt more and more relief. I did walk quite a bit but in retrospect I would’ve walked even more if I had known how much better that toot was going to make me feel. I walked everytime I got up anyways, like to pee brush my teeth or when they woke me up in the middle of the night even. I finally pressed the issue that they switch out my IV pole machine thing. Mine had a very weak battery and even being unhooked that short time while I walked it depleted it so much that it set off alarms they had to come shut off. It was super annoying for them as well and I felt like they were acting annoyed with me as if it was my fault for calling them rather than just accepting that beeping going on all day and night. I am a super light sleeper and it went off other times too so I finally said don’t you have other patients that don’t have to unhook it so many times a day that you could switch with mine. They did and we were all happier for it. Anyways, grab that iv pile and walk walk walk. It doesn’t matter how fast you go, just that you do it. And if you have to toot or belch do not hold it in no matter what. I don’t care who is on the room. Get it out and explain later. Although the doctors and nurses should understand anyways. That was really tough for me but after the relief the first one brought I didn’t care anymore. 😆 I forget. Do you have your date Yet??

I feel like I am stuck in a repetitive loop with food at the moment - I find one thing I like and it is all I eat 😂 My current obsession is a mix of things in a bowl, including: beetroot, small balls of mozzarella, chicken pieces, cucumber, crème fraîche, olives, sundried tomatoes, and a protein popped corn and pea mix. Sounds gross but for some reason I really can't stop eating it 😂 -
I drink fairlife milk too or when a recipe has milk I put the FF one in there. but for sweet desserts the protein drinks hit a different part of my soul that I always knew needed attention LOL Last night I made these PB balls. Pb2, oatmeal, honey, water and Lilly chocolate chips. I was able to 15 balls out of it for 68cal each. So Ill eat 2 for a snack. I'm at the point where I am keeping track of Carbs but not limiting them under 60 I am noticing now that I have been eating fruit and veggies again my BM are more regular. LIike you said so hard to re-train our brain!! I immediately go omgsh carbs bad, but not all are.

Be careful with chips as when you can eat a little more they are a slider food that can get you in trouble. Quest makes some protein chips that are pretty good. I like the ranch ones and my husband loves the loaded taco. They have them at Walmart or target and Amazon.not that I am recommending them this early out but everyone’s plan is different.

Meowdy, friends! 😸 I had VSG on 11/22/23 (the day before Thanksgiving here in the USA 😂, almost 5 months ago), and I have not been a very fast loser. While some people may have dropped 20 lbs in each of the first two months post-op, I'm just at almost 40 lbs down since surgery. My Physician's Assistant (we don't meet with the surgeon at all post-op in our program) said I'm definitely a "slow loser" and am about 12 lbs higher than they'd expect me to be right now. Anyone else out there only losing about 1-2 lbs per week? Anyone who was in this situation and managed to kick things up a notch? And also, anyone who was a slow loser who eventually met their weight loss goal? I've always been awesome at getting in my water, protein, and vitamins each day. My program pretty much refuses to give us macro goals other than protein, but I know I'm generally under 100g of carbs daily (sometimes much less). Protein, I'm usually at 80g+. Calories, I float around 1000 per day. Water, I get a MINIMUM of 64oz. I took a week off of exercising (elliptical and weights) when I was sick with a cold, and I actually lost the most in that week, so I laid off the exercise for a bit, worried it was slowing me down. I'm going to start back up on it, just because it's a good habit to get back into. When I do the elliptical, it's usually pretty vigorous for 30 minutes, sweating profusely and burning ~400-500 calories. I put on some very loud heavy metal and take out all my frustrations on the machine 😅 I'm worried I'm going to be stuck at this weight and that I'm "wasting" this tool and opportunity, or that maybe I chose the wrong surgery. Granted, my current weight is way better than where I was before starting the pre-op diet, and my mobility and endurance are IMMENSELY better, and my IBS-D has basically disappeared (THANK THE LORDT), but it's still not where I'd like to end up. The PA told me that sleeve patients can lose for at least 18 months post-op, so hopefully it's just a slow-but-steady race for me. I guess I could just use some encouragement or advice or anecdotes from others who were slow but successful, or if someone sees something glaringly "wrong" with what I'm doing.

Oh I’m so excited for you to have gotten your authorization. I asked my Dr yesterday about the Colace since I was there and he say I could go ahead and start it too. I don’t remember constipation being an issue last time but maybe it’s something in the protein shakes that can cause it when you have so many in the day? If you mean your bariatric vitamin I would definitely call. My book says to START them with the LSD. I’m obviously already on them because I had the sleeve but the book is for the general audience who hasn’t been on them for years. 😆 OMG the pincushion thing happens to me too. I wonder if our veins are harder to see because of our weight and that will get better. I have started to actually get a little anxious when I go because it’s always such an ordeal. They usually do a butterfly needle in my hand and then the girl always complains because it just dripping and sticks me again. This time I was like idk how long it takes veins to recover but I have surgery soon and they are gonna need a vein so please let it drip. It will fill up eventually. A friend of mine said they always have a hard time at drs offices and she has much better luck at stand-alone labs. Kinda makes sense since they do nothing but draw blood all day whereas a nurse only does it when a patient needs it. I assume you are allowed protein shakes. If so take your meds immediately as you finish one of those. I take my bariatric multi that way and it makes me nauseated without enough in my stomach but with a FULL shake I am fine. I tried to get in a hurry one time and took it when I had only finished half so I could get out the door and it came right back up but I have taken it forever with the full one and it’s fine. The protein in the shakes is actually quite satiating physically. It’s the head hunger that will get you and the jello does help with that. So do the sugar free popsicles if you are allowed those. It just feels good to sorta chew after a while. As long as you are conscious of the fact that you may be a little testy because of your diet you should be okay. You could tell your family ahead of time to tell you if they feel like you are not yourself if you think that would help. I am on day two and as long as I keep busy it’s really not THAT bad. Now ask me Again on day 16 and it may be a different story.

I took a nutrition online class at my community college 2 years after gastric bypass and I wished I had learned more sooner. Food blogs, peer support is great, but college courses hit differently. Knowledge from that class sparked a health and mental health change in me. It’s not about protein or what supplements are trendy, it’s about what your specific body is lacking and needing. I get routine labs done 2-3 times yearly, which is more than recommended. I quit seeing my bariatric surgeon and my medical doctor prescribes only what vitamins show up that are low or needing more. That changed the bariatric fatigue I’d get and I’ve never felt stronger/healthier. Getting another doctor on my care, continuing health education and following my blood work are all things I wished I done sooner. -

My questions were: How long are we looking at for the actual surgery time and time in recovery before getting to the actual room? How long is the recovery and what can I expect during it? How long will I be in the hospital and how soon after the surgery will I be up and walking? Should I use a stomach binder the first 2 weeks to help with the pain after the surgery? What is the recommended time for each stage of eating post surgery, how many calories and carbs should I be getting in, and what are my fluid and protein goals at each stage? When will I be getting follow up blood work (I personally had it at 2 months, 6 months, and 1 year post op)? Is there a list of acceptable exercises to do at each stage of healing until I get my final complete clearance, and at what stage will I get that? What pain meds will I be given and how long will I be able/expected to take them? What, specifically, is dumping and what has been known to trigger it and how do we get through it if it happens? What hormonal changes are to be expected as the weight drops off, especially during the first 3 months? Please tell me EVERYTHING you can about stalls, in as much detail as possible. What medications are affected by the malabsorption that comes with bypass (typically it's extended release, but there could be others). That's all I can remember that I asked, but I hope this at least gives you a good start!!! -

I ate cottage cheese, avocado spread, hummus, protein pudding, protein yogurt, and even 3 or 4 teaspoon fulls of split pea soup (my husband had to eat the rest because it was REALLY filling). I also ate some tuna (but VERY sparingly), oatmeal (again, very sparingly and only 2 or 3 teaspoon fulls...my daughter ate the rest of the bowl because it was really filling), sauteed squash (used extra virgin olive oil and it was soft and soooo good), 1 scrambled egg (only had about 2 small bites and then hubby added the rest to his eggs and finished it). I was just so happy to be able to eat stuff, but I was absolutely NOT ready for how little I could actually eat lol -

I am trying to clean and get organized pre op for my revision and I want to put all these protein shakes away. Well if you have a tony kitchen and tiny pantry like me, I want to put them on top of fridge but I bough the big ones of the flavors I knew I could give away if I don’t like to save some money but, they are going to be too hard for me to lift post surgery. I wish I had got the smaller packs for now. No biggie. Just have to stay on top of it and ask hubby to get them down individually but it would’ve been easier yo ask him to get down a 4 pack. in the whole scheme of things it’s pretty tiny but something to think about. And if you are by yourself I would probably take them out of package and put on counter ahead of time anyways. -

Are you all still tracking all that you eat? I keep thinking maybe I can stop, but then I feel like I need to be accountable and I like to know how much protein and how many calories I'm getting. Also, has anyone made cottage cheese flatbread? I saw a recipe for it on TikTok. It's super easy, and they said it was good. I'm going to try it tonight. It's just cottage cheese, egg, and seasoning! I think I'm going to make it and wrap up a vegan hot dog for dinner. -
Constant nausea and dry heaving

I have been making protein drinks at home. I add berries and Greek yogurt, peanut butter. My bariatric surgeon is doing everything. I had an endoscopy done and an upper gi and everything looked good. He just ordered bloodwork to check for malnutrition but even that was in range. I have tried different anti-nausea medications and none seem to work. He thinks the next step is a feeding tube. -
If this experience taught me anything it was that the human body adapts - i was panicking my first week out of surgery i knew i wasn’t drinking enough broth and water and tea included. But my dietician just said you’ll see your body adapts as long as you keep sipping when you can - you do the best you can listen to your body. The internal swelling is no joke - you can feel perfectly fine on the outside but imagine the healing going on inside. You’ll actually be able to feel it go down a little each day and the restriction won’t be so harsh. I hit none of my hydration or protein goals the first few weeks 🤣 and i felt sooo bad about it but in the end it really isn’t the end of the world as long as you try to the best of your ability

Is revision worth it?

Haven’t had a revision @FifiLux, but I think if I was in your situation, I‘d ask for a second opinion or tell your surgeon you‘re not ready/interested now but will keep it in mind as a possible option in the future. Considering your GERD is so mild & manageable, there doesn’t seem to be a medical reason for the revision. If you are happy with your weight loss (& you should be - congratulations) what is the need for a revision for additional weight loss? At ten months, you have plenty of time to lose any additional weight you may want to lose (many of us continue to lose for a total of 1-2 years). The cynical side of me wonders if your surgeon wants to buy a new house, go on an overseas holiday, etc. Said cynical. 😁 -
Anyone else baxe a surprise gallbladder removal?

Sometimes you don’t have any symptoms for you to discover you have gall stones which may be why you had your gall removed unexpectedly - they only found the problem during your surgery. I found out I had a gallstone 9 months post sleeve. No symptoms then at 25 months post sleeve I had my first attack (the pain is horrendous!) and my surgeon removed my gall. The gall regulates the stomach acid entering your tummy. It can take a little while for the body to compensate for it not being there and the extra acid can cause some smelly diarrhoea. My surgeon said to let him know if it continued for more than a month. It didn’t though every now & again I might have an attack of this sort of diarrhoea (my sister-in-law does too but my aunt doesn’t). Some people struggle with fatty food after gall surgery. This is a more common malabsorption issue. Me, I got the more rare protein malabsorption. Also have issues absorbing some meds (notably my HRT). I think I have the fat one as well & is why my cholesterol has been slowly increasing - waah! Out of curiosity, why couldn’t you have the latte? I wasn’t told I couldn’t have anything after my surgery. -
Relieved to hear that. Any tips for meeting nutritional guidelines - I am not very good at cooking. So my post op soft food day looks like protein water chicken mince (2-3oz) hummus or some Greek yogurt and a bite or canned peach so far

My best advice is to be prepared to put yourself first for around a month. It didn’t take that long for the pain to get better but it does take a little while to get your stamina back and get into a groove with all the vitamins, protein and water and then each of the stages are a little adjustment. Take your time and allow your body the rest that it needs and prioritize yourself and your recovery for the time you need. The good news is that you should also see a pretty big drop on the scale as in your measurements. Which leads to my second suggestion which is to take photos and measurements as well as recording your weight beginning preop. They will help keep you motivated later down The road when the scale stalls. The third thing I would suggest is to check out an App that allows you to record your progress. The Baritastic App lets you record everything from food and water to vitamins, exercise, measurements, weight, and even your bowel movements which will become something that you think about more than ever post surgery haha 😆 and it is fairly easy to figure out. I wish I had started before my preop or my surgery. Also, make sure that you have whatever stool softeners, laxatives or soluble fiber your team suggests on hand and begin whatever preventative measures they set for you immediately post op. When you are in the hospital don’t hesitate to tell them if you are in pain. And Walk ALOT. Especially if you are in pain. It doesn’t matter how fast you go, it’s just the movement. I promise you that passing gas is your biggest goal in terms of relieving pain and the walking helps with that.
