Pain after revision
Questions? replied to Dee-Texas's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my band removed and revision in two separate surgeries. The band removal was a breeze. I think I took one dose of Percocet the night of surgery and that was it. The sleeve revision was not much worse and the surgeon said I had a bunch of adhesions. The original band surgery was by far the worst of the three but less of a recovery than my c-section. I'm pretty sure most revision patients will tell you that the sleeve is so much better than the band. You'll do great. Good luck! -
Yes I do take biotin and use a shampoo that is supposed to block dht and prevent hair loss. I had sleeve in March 2018. Started losing hair then and never stopped losing it. Praying that I don’t lose more with this revision! i meant that I don’t have to take calcium and iron separately

Where are you on your weight loss journey?
goregalore replied to Lynkaosgood's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
5 years out from lap band and 9 weeks out from revision! I had the band taken out and had the bypass done. I had nothing but issues with that horrible band and I couldn't be happier with where I am. 45 lbs down and more active than ever! Good luck guys, it's worth it! -
Gastric sleeve with Dr. Fernando Garcia
Mashengka posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hello my name is Maria, and I am pretty new to this website. I just wanted to give a review of Dr. Fernando Garcia with tijuanabariatrics.com. If you ever decide to go with him please do your research. I am not going to say anything on his skills if you are a first time patient. But for revision surgery please consider someone else more experienced. I went to see dr. Garcia for a revision from lap band to sleeve. I payed good amount of money to be promised a sleeve and ended up with God knows what. As soon as I could drink I drank the whole bottle of water and other drinks no problem. They said it was a perfect sleeve and that they used small bougie. I got home I was hungry all the time and drinking all the liquids I could! No restriction whatever. I started to panic and called and emailed Doctor Velazco his helping Doctor. She said don't worry you won't be feeling full on liquids. When you start your purée and solid diet you will feel it. So 2 month out of what was called sleeve surgery I am 35 pounds heavier than before. Of course I started to panic and do my research why I didn't succeed in this. I found dr. Rodriguez through Belight company. And after reviewing my medical history he agreed on doing a bypass on me. When I met him I asked him why do you think I gained so much weight. If I had sleeve I should had stayed at same weight and not gaining no more. He said he won't be able to tell till he is inside of me. What he told me was horrible. Dr Garcia didn't do no sleeve on me. He just folded my stomach in half and saw it and than stitching got undone so half of my stomach was stitched and other was half wasn't. It wasn't even a plication. With plication stomach folded in several folds but what he did to me is not even a surgery. He just put my life in jeopardy because a lot of scar tissue left in there. He didn't clean anything up. Instead of 1 and 1/2 hours my sergeant was working on me for 4 hours!!! I am so hopeful that this was it and I don't have to go through another surgery again! -
From Sleeve to Bypass - Revision
Elode replied to rozzieba's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I would take a good look at what your eating ect.. I am a slacker In the exercise department (that will change next week finally!) I still lost 60 lbs In 4 months even w/o any exercise. I do track everything that goes in my mouth though and I'm extremely caution of what I eat. Maybe you do need a revision...better discuss that with your DR! -
What would you change?
CowgirlJane replied to Bring It On's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
It's easy for us to criticize a procedure we didn't have... but truth of the matter is all I really know about is what it was like to be banded in 2001 in Germany by a world known surgeon and sleeved in WA state in 2011 by a practice with a terrific local reputation. For me the band was just a nightmare of epic proportions but I realize that others find success and i genuinely wish all huge success. Some of have said that the techniques are better now, but I know that my sleeve surgeon who used to be a "band factory" really seldom does them now. His reasoning is that a higher percentage of people do better with the sleeve or RNY. I never discussed plication with him. When I first heard of plication, before i revised to the sleeve, I had that "deja vu" feeling - like a lot of promise but very little evidence - same as existed with the band in 2001. Again, perhaps in the last few years more info has come out about plication so I am certainly not the one to speak to that! I think it is really really important to do your homework. While it is interesting to read forums - the truth of the matter you will find both wild success and epic failures for pretty much any WLS for a variety of reasons. I think that looking at actual published studies of a wide population is a much better and more realistic way to look at this. I think also talking to the surgeon about the results seen in their practice! Then, once you pick a procedure, throw your heart and soul into it. I picked a surgeon who had a two year follow up since I had very poor follow up and education with the band i recognized that as one of the issues for me. I learned so much during this time working with their team of experts... I really attribute much of my success to that support and education system that i took full advantage of. I went from super morbidly obese (BMI over 50) to now weighing about 140, wearing a size 4 jeans and a small or medium top - I did have plastics which is part of why I fit in smaller sizes now. For me, the sleeve has been the tool that I needed to have this success, and i am sure I would have done well with the RNY too. -
Help! Thinking about cancelling
BigSue replied to Sandra90's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went into my initial consultation thinking that I wanted the sleeve, but my surgeon pushed me to get gastric bypass instead because I had a very high starting BMI (over 60). I had gotten the impression that the sleeve was a more modern, less risky, less extreme surgery, but my surgeon explained that the risks are about equal (although there are different risks), and gastric bypass typically results in more weight loss. I was unsure at the time, but as I learned more about both surgeries, I became more confident that gastric bypass was the right surgery. It might just be confirmation bias, but I've seen a lot of people talk about getting severe GERD with the sleeve, and/or not losing enough weight, and getting a revision to bypass. What surgery you get is YOUR decision, though, so if you are not comfortable with it, you have the right to cancel. However, it's best to avoid making big decisions when you're in a heightened emotional state, so what were your thoughts a few weeks ago when the surgery was a little farther in the distance and you were in a calmer state of mind? -
Time off work
NewMe3 replied to chrissyJones901's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was a revision sleeve to bypass. For the bypass I took 3 weeks off work (though my job is fairly active - aged care). -
I also have bcbs fep. I need to get my 10 year old band out because of slippage and dilated esophagus. Doc thinks they will approve revision at the same time. My bmi is 30 which is low for surgery but with my band I have gained back 30 pounds over the last year or so. I guess the way the doctor describes it to insurance they realize the cost effectiveness of revision. I have a 3 month wait. The doc said they haven't gotten denied yet for a case like mine so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Its only been 2 weeks so I have lots of praying to do

Doc advising Gastric Bypasd vs sleeve... Anyone have that happen?
sanks51 replied to Poorehouse's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
After two years of having issues with my band, I went to see a consultant. I really, really wanted a bypass as I had failed miserably with the band!! Straight out he said he would do the sleeve! The bypass was not even an option he mentioned. I was absolutely distraught and cried and cried. However, today I'm the happiest I've been for a very long time. I'm almost 7 months post op and have lost 104lbs. My start weight was 397lbs. My sleeve has been a Godsend and I'm so happy he never entertained the thought of a bypass. Band to sleeve revision peeps are having great successes -
Doc advising Gastric Bypasd vs sleeve... Anyone have that happen?
LipstickLady replied to Poorehouse's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The first surgeon I went to insisted that the best thing for me was bypass even though I told him that I was absolutely not interested in that at all. He grudgingly said he would sleeve me if I insisted, but every visit, he rammed bypass down my throat. I am NOT a band revision, but he could give me no good reason why bypass was better than sleeve other than his thought that I should want to dump if I ate bad things. Uhmmm....no. I want to live a fairly normal life. I am not a huge sweets eater, but I do want to have a bite of cake or a scoop of ice cream from time to time. His nurse was a bypass recipient and she was also extremely pushy about having bypass over sleeve for the same reason. When I told her my feelings on it, she acted as if I was nuts and just like the doctor, told me that dumping was desirable. WHUCK!?!?!! I changed doctors and I am SO glad I did. SO GLAD. Edit to add: I was 4 months into a 6 month process and had to start all over. Still glad I did it. -
Sister and I will have RNY sometime in July or August 2017
cevans2995 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My sister and I will both be having revision surgery to a RNY after a failed attempt with a procedure called the Waldrep Wrap. Going through the nutrition appointments now and have labs done. Then it will just be waiting for insurance approval. -
Hi, I’m new and I’m have revision from sleeve to bypass upon approval. Can you share how soon you think you went back to work?

Doc advising Gastric Bypasd vs sleeve... Anyone have that happen?
Poorehouse posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Went to see DrProvost today (I have second with Dr Cribbins Wed)... I told dr provost I wanted to revise band to sleeve. He said he will do band to gastric bypass. He said the sleeve is not good for banders. Had I never had a band he would do a sleeve but because I do have a band he recommends the bypass. Which I am scared to death of. He said people with bands that have sleeves I told him I didn't like the thought of bypass because of re routing everything and dumping syndrome. He said dumping happen when you eat sugar or high fat foods. If you eat that you will feel very sick, and faint like you want to pass out. All the things I worried about. He said well I should not be eating that anyway so I should do bypass. I fully understand that I must change my eating habits and that sugar and high fats are off limits... However the thought of NEVER having sweets really bothers me. I think if every ONCE IN A WHILE I want to share a piece of birthday cake with my son I would like to be able to have that option once I react my goal weight. Hopefully I'm not wrong feeling that way. My question is has anyone else been advised to so gastric bypass vs sleeve and what did you decided an how did it turn out? Also, has anyone had leaks since sleeve revision. Advice needed and appreciated -
I’m freshly home from the hospital after gastric bypass revision surgery (after a failed lap band). I feel pretty bad still though. Wondered if others had similar issues after: Diarrhea Nausea Impossible to sleep in a comfy position Groggy and in/out Trouble getting in the 4oz per hour Would love to hear your stories. Also, what did you take for nausea? I have the omeprazole for the acid and am taking Tylenol for pain. But the nausea is pretty bad, as in the diarrhea.

Gall Bladder Issues after Weight Loss Surgery
thebionicbroad replied to PhatGurl80's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon took out my gallbladder at the same time that he did the Lap-band revision to a sleeve. He said that I had an ancient, calcified stone the size of a jaw-breaker, and didn't want to take any chances with me having to have yet another abdominal surgery. -
Hey ya'll...been a minute!!!

Things have been super annoying lately. I had surgeries for all the polyps in my stomach in Jan, Feb, and March. Thought I was done, then the doctor looked down through my duodenum and found nodules all through it, so now I have a surgery on the 14th of this month to remove them. Hopefully he can get them all, if not, then I'll have 1 last one in May. THEN I will be cleared for revision surgery in either June or July. On the plus side, my A1c is now 5.3, which takes me out of even being pre-diabetes and is now officially normal. My blood pressure stays around 110/70ish. I'm in size 18 clothes now (from size 28), size 7 ring (from size 10), have a lot of annoying loose skin (the only real skin that bothers me is the loose skin on my neck/chin). I'm back to being able to do my normal work outs again. All in all, I'm doing well. Just want these surgeries to be finished so I can have the revision, recover, and get back to living my life normally. There will be new adjustments with the bypass (my main fears are strictures and malabsorption) but I'll get the hang of it like I did with the sleeve. Just ready for everything to finally be finished. -
I started to introduce all foods 4 weeks after MGB and 3 weeks after revision to RNY. Rice was one of the first foods I tried and it was fine. However, dietitians vary. The ones in my treatment team are pretty lax about food choices as long as nutritional needs are met and the patient is satisfied with the results and that suits me just fine. They recommend to try stuff like rice, muesli and pasta etc. with caution as some patients experience stomach problems with rice and the like but in general they're ok with these foods (what people on here usually call "carbs"). A so-called "balanced diet" is recommended by them but I know that this is not everyone's cup of tea.

Under 50 lbs to lose - would you recommend the sleeve (after band removal)
certifiedcoder replied to Cleo's Mom's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I can relate to your journey. I had my band in 2005 and a revision in 2009. I also have a dilated pouch and esophogus inflamation. I am scheduled for a revision to the gastric sleeve in 11 days! I am so excited. My band has been opened and refilled an now completly opened after my pre surgical Endoscopy which showed all the damage. I have gained 20 pounds in 4 months and it is killing me. I sustained 100 lb weight loss all these years and instantly - BAM I am gaining! I am very encouraged by the posts and reviews I see from people who have converted. Seems like a second chance to really reach goal without shutting down to liquids only... I loved when my band was tight. I could barely eat at all and I worked out like a fiend! It is not that I am eating BAD foods now as I mostly eat very clean, I just eat too much! I cant wait, I am counting down the days! -

<![endif]--> Well, as far as knowing what to expect I can tell you a little more about what went down on Monday. Firstly I called the admitting dept at about 7pm on Friday, gave them my name and birthday and they told me to be there at 5:30am on Monday. So I was a little stressed about being late so I arrived around 5am at the entrance they told me. It seems the admitting dept is closed until 5:30 though so I had to wait down at the entrance until 5:30. Around 5:30 I went up to same day admitting, and took a seat while they turned on the lights, and got papers etc ready. There where a number of people there for what seemed a bunch of different procedures. They had everyone sign in and wait to be called. A little while later they called me, and I had to verify my name and birth date on some forms. After that they gave me a wrist band and sent me on to a small doctor's office type room. Once there I was directed to change into a gown, hairnet, and socks. Something they talked a lot about is the stuff you bring with you. They offer to put your valuable in the hospital safe, and to hang on to your bags for when you are moved to your room afterward but I had my family hang on to them. At any rate I was in the room all changed for a while and a bunch of different people came to have me sign this and that. Some nurses, the anesthesiologist, and finally Dr. Ren. One form that turned out to be significant for me later was the form that enabled them to correct a ulcer of some sort if I had one. It turned out that I did, and from what I understand it is basically where your stomach has poped up into your chest cavity a bit, and they shove it back down (this is my interpretation they had some medical lingo for what they did). After speaking to the doctor things moved pretty fast. They came and got me, and lead me into the operating room. I had to mention that I would like to use the restroom, and they let me do that, to be honest I was not sure how that works when you go under so I wanted to make sure I did not go on the table lol. Now up to this point I was pretty nervious, but it really hit me as I was walking to the room. Seeing the scrub sinks and the big peices of machiery made it all very real and in a sense frighteneing. Yet I gathered my courage and kept going. I got into the operating room itself and they had me lay down on a rather uncomfortable bed. After this there is not much more to tell, the anesthesiologist put in a iv, strapped down my arm, asked me to lean forward to put a blanket under my back. Then he placed a oxygen mask on me and asked me to take a few deep breaths. Next thing I know I was in the recovery room. I slowly drifted back into wakefullness. I would be awake then doze off again, and I am not sure how long this lasted. Eventually I was awake and I remeber my mouth was extreamly dry. I asked the person that was watching me for some ice but she said it was too early for that, but I could have a swab. Never have I appreciated a spongy swab dipped in ice Water more then at that moment. After waiting there for a time a bed was arranged on the 13th floor, and they moved me up. At this point there was not really much pain, just some woozyness (is that a word heh?). I layed there for a while, and the nurse told me about my options for pain managment, and about the spirometer (the back page of one of the pages in the packet you got from pre-surgical testing talks about it). The nurse also gave me some ice chips and said I could have some broth in 4 hours. There was a long period of just laying there, I would not say I was bored, just sort of relaxing, and I used it to put my mind in order. I do need to make a side note that the nurses I had while I was there where really 10/10. They where very helpful, and knowledgeable. I was in a double room and they moved some people in and out that where personable and I spoke to them to pass the time. I got up eventually, and I walked around, but right when I was getting back to bed I had the most queezy feeling and felt like I was going to puke. I told the nurse and she hooked up some stuff to my iv for queezyness that took care of that. Later the doctor came in breifly and told me everything went well, and that I was a-ok. I had some broth, and it went down quite easy. This turned out to be a little decieveing. I suppose that the stomache had not swollen like they said it would at this point and that is why I was able to drink so easily. As it is now I have to drink extreamly slow or I get a sort of backed up feeling. The night passed fitfully. When you go into the operating room they put your legs in these blow up things that keep your circulationg going, and they had me wear those during the night. They where very uncomfortable, and hot, but oh well. The next morning they had a meeting around 8 for the lap band patients. I met some of my fellow patients there. I had thought about going around before that to, I don't know just sort of say hello, but then I thought that they probably wanted to be left alone, and it would be rude of me to intrude. Anyway they went over the post sugery diet, and talked about your next visit for the esophogram. Then it was all done, I told the nurse I was ready to leave, signed some papers, and took some pain medicine for the road (Thank goodness I thought of this because it seemed like every pot hole on the way home was ten feet deep). I had my family pick me up and went home. Now I am at home. I find it a little difficult to lay down because it is hard to breath deep without pain, so the first night I pretty much slept with my back up. I did not get a very good night sleep, and there has been some soreness and pain. Oddly enough my computer chair gives me the best position to sit both minimizing pain, and making it easier to get up. Getting up from bed and chairs is hard because I use my stomach muscles for that, and they are really sore. I have felt the pain and soreness go down since I got home, so I feel pretty positive about that. On the way home I picked up some pepcid complete chewables because I noticed that they kept hooking me up to a pepcid iv bag in the hospital. Nobody said acid would be a problem, and it hasn’t yet but I just wanted to be prepared. I also got some gas-x disolvable strips. Apparently they shoot some CO2 into you during the surgery that gives you shoulder pain similar to gas, and the gas-x does nothing for that, but it helps for regular stomach gas. I also got some kids gummy vites because I could not find any Centrum chewables. Whew, that is about all I can think of off the top of my head. It is sort of a rant, but believe it or not it sort of helps to lay it all out on here, I have never been a journal person but I imagine this is what being one feels like. I hope it helps, and I wish you the best of luck. Even when the pain and soreness where at their worst I did not regret my choice.

Plateau After Only Two Weeks?! Wtf!
LT1002 replied to samomom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're me too! Band to sleeve revision, lost about the same amount with the band then stopped. Gained weight back. Got the sleeve. Lost 16 lbs. Stalled at about 2 1/2 weeks and have been stuck here. I'm three weeks out today and am on softs, getting in a good amount of protein, tracking everything carefully on MyFitnessPal, getting in my fluids, staying away from carbs, etc. I'm stuck, frustrated, pissed off and am miserable because I wonder why I put myself through this for nothing. Closest I've ever followed a diet and I'm not getting anywhere. This sucks. -
My being afraid of bypass is what led me to the disasterous decision to do a band to begin with. I have realized very much the hard way that I should not make medical decisions based on things I am afraid of that I have no expertise whatsoever in and that I should listen to the people who do have the expertise. I went to my revision doctor wanting the sleeve. He suggested bypass as a better option. Thankfully this time i listened. I ultimately realized this was the best course to take to avoid the risk of yet another revision. And I'm done with bariatric surgery! He was right and I'm mad at myself for wasting 11 years of my life in denial with the band where I could have just had success and eliminated my health issues in one fell swoop instead of trading them in for The new ones the band caused.

When did you decide it was time for a revision?
summerset replied to ryan_86's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So your weight is at about 200 lbs now? Why do you believe that you can't back to where you were and stay there? If you think that it's too soon for revision, then well... it's too soon for a revision! No, seriously... if you're not experiencing symptoms like e .g. serious reflux it's really hard to decide when it's time for a revision or if a revision makes any sense at all. There is always the risk of another surgery and results regarding additional weight loss or losing regained weight can be quite poor depending on the procedure. -
how to move forward without insurance
RestlessMonkey replied to msde83's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most surgeons/clinics don't accept "payment plans" but as previous poster said, have financing options available. Since you will be paying, too, you can look around, go to several seminars, and pick the right surgeon with the right price. One thing many of us didn't realize in the "PREOP" stage....aftercare is VERY important with the lap band. So find out how much fills will be, if any "freebies" are included in your price (many offer 1 year of fills free) and also ask how problems will be handled...ie what if your port flips and you need a revision? What if you get an infection in the hospital? What if something else goes wrong? Odds are REALLY good you won't have a problem but find out how it will be handled if you do! Good luck to you! -
They have solu-tabs, but my insurance gave me grief (they paid for the whole revision surgery but gave me grief about the ant-acid). ....So I asked the pharmacist what would be similar and comes in a tiny pill and he found something for me. It's been a life saver.
