  1. HI there, I had my surgery july 2001. I was 290, went down to 160, stayed there (plus maybe 10 lbs if I ate too much), but held steady for about 10 years, then on the fifth year, I started little by little to gain weight. I am now up to 230. I saw a doctor today about a revision. He would do it, but said there are lots of complications and the weight loss isn't that great, like only 30 lbs?! I am soooooo frustrated. I read other folks getting the revision and losing 100 lbs!! please write to me at valentina21459 at gmail if you like. Linda Vellucci

    Mexico or US...cant decide

Where did you go in Mexico? And what Dr did you use. I need a revision from lapband to gadtric bypass or sleeve. But im on a budget cant go over $5700. Just dont no where to go. Sent from my SM-N900P using the BariatricPal App For my VSG I went to Ariel Ortiz at Obesity Control Center in Tijuana. I am not sure you could get your revision with him for under $5700, though. You should contact OCC about their current pricing. There are many other excellent surgeons in Mexico, though that might be in your price range. My first suggestion would be to contact BariatricPal's Mexico coordinator, @@Bill Yanez. He could give you current information on pricing with the BariatricPal affiliated surgeons.
  4. So, I am back yet again, I've been gone for a while. A little history about myself, I'm a nurse (yeah, I know), and I had lap band done in 2009 with removal in 2015, gastric sleeve in Sept 2015. I lost about 40 lbs with the band and gained it all back after 2 babies- no big issues with the band other than vomiting from stuck food. I decided to have the sleeve done last year and have only lost 50 lbs. My highest weight was 309 (pre-sleeve) and I currently weigh 259, my lowest was around 253, so I have started to gain some of my weight back. The sleeve was great, but just not for me. I was told by my MD to do the bypass after the lapband, but I was just too scared. So, after doing a little research on mini gastric bypass, I am thinking of having this surgery. My only setback is that I have to go to Mexico to have it....Yikes! I have researched different surgeons- Dr. Ortiz, Dr. Garcia, and dr. Ponce de leon. What are your experiences with this type of revision? What MD would you recommend? What are the conditions of the hotels that you stay in? How is the staff? English speaking? I do have a cardiac history of heart failure from previous pregnancy. So, I need someone who will give me the extra TLC that I need.

Slower weight loss second time around?

I have been losing 2 lbs a week since my revision in May, Very frustrating to see the fast numbers on first time sleevers. I guess a pound lost is better than a pound gained. Just hope I can lose 60 more lbs.

  7. I am sorry that it has taken so long for me to update everyone. One month ago I was finally diagnosed with SLE (lupus), and also have the fibromyalgia cross over. I have continued to gain weight. I am now up to a 25 lb weight gain, not matter how much I cut carbs, and raise my Protein intake. I am extremely depressed not just because of the weight gain, but also because of the diagnosis. It is really imperative that I lose weight. I have begun trying to be more active, but no change on the scale. I am now considering revision surgery from the gastric sleeve to RNY. I don't know what else to do at this point. I know that it can cause many complications. I am not sure if there is any other procedure that might help, but am trying to contact my original surgeon, as well as some of the best surgeons in my area. Looking for any advice that you ladies might have. I really would appreciate your feedback. Thanks so much, Jennifer
  8. I am also considering revision surgery from the sleeve to the RNY. I originally weighed 308(sleeve performed in October of 2011) and was able to get down to 213. I was working out with a very tough trainer 3 to 4 times per week. Then about 3 years ago I began experiencing sciatic pain, that progressed into muscle, nerve, and severe joint pain. One month ago (after much testing/and a family history), I was diagnosed with SLE (systemic lupus). It doesn't seem to matter how low my carbs or calories are, or how high my Protein is, I have gained almost 30 lbs. For health and honestly vanity reasons, I really need to be under 200 lbs. I would welcome any advice that any of you can give. I am currently trying to get in touch with my original surgeon as well as the top rated physicians in my area. Not sure if insurance will cover this. My particular plan is listed as covering the cost, but who knows. Thanks so much for any suggestions you may have. Jennifer
  9. Any tips/pointers, things that have worked for any of you to achieve your goals? I plan my food in advance and pre-log what I am going to eat in MyFitnessPal. I weigh my portions. I focus on protein dense foods and green veggies, with some fruit, dairy, tree nuts, and max one serving of whole grains per day. When I am trying to lose weight, I will often cut out the one serving of whole grains. I make sure I am in a caloric deficit. I do not eat back exercise calories. I keep off-plan food out of my house entirely. Second question...is it possible to get back to feeling restriction again? Yes, but you need to focus on eating lean, dense protein, green veggies, high fiber foods -- you won't feel restriction with high carb foods, sweets, most dairy. Third question..how does a person determine if they need a revision? Consult with a surgeon on that one. Honestly, from what I have seen here, people who are struggling with eating are struggling because they choose the wrong kind of food or choose to graze all day rather than restrict themselves to a schedule of meals and snacks, not because their sleeve is too big. Good luck!
  10. I am so glad you posted this, because the exact same thing is happening to me. I have found I can eat a lot more food and don't feel full, and so also have gained about 20 lbs. Then you get depressed because you have "fallen off the wagon" and eat more! I didn't know you can get a revision..would insurance pay for this? How would that work? Currently, I am going to therapy to try to figure out why I can't control my eating, and hopefuly will stop from climbing up that ladder again! It also been 2 years for me and that seems to be the magic number where the sleeve no longer really works. I have tried everything, went back to shakes, lost like maybe 5 lbs, then as soon as I went back to food, gain it back. I also had a torn rotator cuff and am still recovering. I can do walking, but can't do not do the stair climbing and other weight training I was doing before. Simple walking my body just laughs at. You get to a point where you need to up your level, but when your body won't let you because of injury, its really hard to find that balance. Would love to hear of any solutions as well! Bless you, we can do this!!
  11. Hi All, Im 38 and had gastric sleeve surgery almost 2 years ago now. I originally lost about 80 pounds and have regained about 20 after having fallen into poor eating habits again...also I had been jogging until a few months ago and was finally getting back on track until my knee gave out (through MRI found that I have ostioarthritis in my knee and am bone on bone). I am now not only struggling with trying to find a good cardio solution but just getting back to getting my head in the game. Any tips/pointers, things that have worked for any of you to achieve your goals? Just looking for some support/encouragment that its still possible even years out of surgery. I am currently 225 and would like to be at 160. Second question...is it possible to get back to feeling restriction again? Third question..how does a person determine if they need a revision? Thanks so much. Sent from my SM-G925W8 using the BariatricPal App
  12. I wouldn't start out by assuming that you'll have reflux or need PPI's for extended periods of time. Those aren't true for everyone (not for me, for example). If you are truly terrified of the prospect of kidney disease caused by PPI's, you might want to investigate gastric bypass, which does not result in stomach acid and PPI use the way the sleeve does. In fact, revising to gastric bypass is the standard way of curing excess acid caused by the sleeve and not controlled by meds. So, even if you do end up with the sleeve and acid reflux, there are options beyond just taking PPI's for the rest of your life. Also, being obese is a very high risk factor for kidney disease. So if you really really want to avoid it, you may want to throw into the mix that obtaining a healthy weight is one of the best ways to avoid kidney disease, and weight loss surgery is the most effective way known to get to that healthy weight. Good luck in your decision.
  13. I have found that there are many people in the world that judge others, regardless of having all the facts or understanding your personal journey and challenges you face. None of us entered into this decision lightly. It is a big commitment...a lifelong, life-changing commitment that I am sure no one here approached lightly or flippantly. Only my wife and immediate family and my best friend know about my surgery and I will probably keep it that way. When I had lap-band back in 2006 (I had a sleeve revision in June), I made the mistake at the time of telling a few coworkers because they noticed I had lost some weight. I could visibly see the change in their posturing and attitude from one of support and positive feedback to the obvious "cop-out" perspective. It was not only offensive, but disappointing. So, this time around, I am keeping it to just a close group of people that I feel like would have my back, no matter what. So far, this is working out fine. I am making it to the gym 3-5 times a week, so when someone asks about the weight loss, I tell them I am working out and making a lifestyle change. Hey...its the truth! :-) You don't owe anyone an explanation...and technically, its nobody's business.

    Recovery

Hi I had revision from band to sleeve on 7/26 and my own experience my recovery has been much slower than when I got the band. I stayed in the hospital 2 days and I planned to take 1 week off work and actually had to take 2. The area were my port was hurt for a couple of days. My body is taking a little longer to recover. But I'm thinking since I had troubles with my band and was not able to eat for about 3 weeks before surgery my body was already weak. Everyone is different. Good Luck and hope u have a speedy recovery.

I live in Orlando. I had sleeve surgery in Aug 2011. Because of horrible reflux I had revision surgery to a Mini Gastric Bypass. I used BariatricPal and had surgery in Tijuana, MX. It was a very good experience. My surgeon was Dr. Illan at florence Hospital. I would like a local support group too. Once a month a least.
  16. I, too, had a sleeve in August, 2013, then revision of the sleeve & conversion to a single-anastomosis duodenal switch in December, 2015, along with a hiatal hernia repair. I had lost about 100 lbs & gained less than 20 lbs back but still had all of my co-morbidities. I am now down about 45 lbs from there, 10 lbs pre-op & 35 lbs since the second surgery. My surgeon is very strict & I was on Clear Liquids only for the first week post-op then clear liquids & Protein shakes for the next three weeks before I could move on to pureed foods. That is his protocol for all WLS patients. I had a very difficult time getting in my fluids, protein & Vitamins for the first three weeks until I had an endoscopy to dilate a couple of strictures in my stomach. You need to follow your surgeon's plan. The intestinal anastomoses are just as delicate as the stomach staple line, if not more so. (My opinion as a nurse.) I am thrilled with my results even though I'm not yet at goal as all of my co-morbidities have resolved.

    Lap-band to Sleeve

I had a band to sleeve revision 3 months ago.... best decision i ever made, its so much easier, recovery for me was so easy. Its way better than the band, you don't get that horrible stuck feeling, i don't slime, i have only vomited twice (my own fault, ate too quickly early out) As a bander, once you convert to a sleeve you will find that you can eat a little more than a virgin sleever, this is due to damage that the band does to your esophagus, it reduces nerve sensations. For me, i can eat everything, i have tested my sleeve over the last month and nothing is an issue. I wish they offered the sleeve when i had my band initially, it would have saved me years of issues and problems. Best of luck with your revision
  18. I recently converted to Duodenum switch from the sleeve. I had the sleeve surgery back in 2013 and lost about 50lbs and have gained most of it back along with developing a hiatal hernia as well. I am on my 7th day post-op and I have done full liquids but I am really wanting to move to semi-soft pureed foods. Has anyone done that before they were suppose to and did you do ok? My thoughts are the staples in my stomach are already healed since that part was completed 2 yrs ago. I only have the switch of the intestines this time. Please give any advice or information I can view on this. Thanks in advance.
  19. I'm on that road right now. Lost over 100 lbs with lap band, the doctor said to switch to sleeve due to minor continuing issues. My insurance approved the revision. Lots of hoops to jump through. sleep study, ekg/stress test/echo, endoscopy plus more. I finished jumping through most of the hoops and will begin my pre-op diet soon. As soon as I was approved for the revision, they completely unfilled my band. That was a little more than 4 months ago. I'm up 22 lbs since they unfilled it. I'm scheduled for a September revision (all in one).
  20. Hopefully A Butterfly

My story of screwing up. Support? Ideas?

I never went back to that group, as you can imagine. I may look into another group, but I'm not sure. Someone else mentioned that it's hard to "ruin" a sleeve, so I'm hoping that's true. I self paid for this sleeve! Someone else mentioned revising to a gastric bypass, I didn't think of that but I'm going to see how I do on just recommitting first. My new insurance does pay for bypass, but not sure if a revision to one. Thanks for the encouragement. I really do appreciate it.
  21. Band to bypass is a safe option for conversion as long as there is no history of intestinal surgery or reason to have extensive intestinal adhesions. I recommend seeing a surgeon who regularly performs band to bypass conversions and routinely does band revisions/conversions. The bypass has more long term data compared to sleeve. The bypass is also considered the gold standard weight loss operation. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  22. My doctor removed all my Fluid before the EGD, otherwise it would be difficult to get the camera down my esophagus. It was also to let my stomach go back to normal before the sleeve revision. People who never had the lap band have EGDs all the time.

Why did you want to revise from sleeve to bypass? I had horrible reflux and unsatisfactory weight loss. I had taken the medicine to reduce acid for so long I was having side effects from it. I have not had one episode of reflux since my surgery. Thank you Dr. Illan.

Why did you want to revise from sleeve to bypass?
  25. I met with my surgeon yesterday to discuss band removal/revision. He recommended a sleeve because there are fewer complications and it is a simpler surgery. He also said that if it is done correctly, the weight loss is close to the bypass. Because I have worked hard the last 3 years to lose 80 lbs and get down to 230, he said I can reasonably expect to get to 175, more if I exercise and work hard. Next I have to go for an EGD test to assess the condition of my stomach and esophagus. I'll be swallowing a tiny camera! Luckily, there will be some sedation. They don't submit paperwork to insurance until after the test. My band can be unfilled at that point. I really like this surgeon. He removed my daughter's gall bladder 2 years ago and I researched him thoroughly. I'm starting to get excited, even though he expects surgery to be 6 weeks away. This week I need to ask my GP and therapist for letters saying I'm a good candidate for surgery and can be expected to follow my post-op diet and be successful. I'll keep you all posted!
