How many years after surgery could you eat a plate of spaghetti without feeling nauseous?
Losingit2018 replied to Ninja-slash-nerd's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am almost two months post op and can’t eat any raw veggies yet. It just takes time to be completely healed. I haven’t really thought about pasta as I didn’t really eat it much before surgery. There are lots of good pasta replacement options out there though. I have made fried rice using riced cauliflower and it was good. That was during my pre bypass stage though. you will find a new normal way if eating and feel so much better for it. Hang in there! -
I am about 9 years post-op, I did very well up until my 40th birthday. then things went for the worst! slowly but surely gained 20 pounds each year! Not to mention having really really bad reflux. I cannot eat anything spicy, drink late at night even brush my teeth without having reflux. I went to my bariatric doctor and I feel like he just gets angry and scolds me for not logging food. He said I have some leaking but it is my weight gain that causes my reflux and tells me I cannot have a revision because he is sure it my food choices that have caused my weight gain and reflux. I make some bad choices but nothing nearly what I was before my procedure. I almost never drink soda, I don't eat corn, rice, or pasta like at all it makes me sick and pukes it up asap! my sugar intake is low although my weakness gets me most times. I know I could do better with water intake as well. I seem to feel hungry all the time. I know I can eat so much more than I did before. I could eat a whole hot dog in a sitting where before I could only eat half. I feel i am back where I was before a procedure where it seems even a slice a bread causes me 2 pounds! I really feel I need a revision or go RNY but I am so scared to even ask my doctor as I am scared of him judging me and denying me making it seem I am neglegent of my choices all because I don't log my food on a daily! any recommendations?

Knowing what I know now about the band and have experienced major issues with it, I would say revision is necessary. I just recently revised to the sleeve in November. It's weird because it still feels as though my band is still there without the stuck feeling. I am very restricted and you would think I am half way to goal, but no. I've only lost 14 pounds since my surgery. I'm happy because I'm not gaining lol. Anyway, by all means, consult with your surgeon and do what you feel is best. Good luck! Thank you, @Lady VS. So I had my band placed in December 2015 and I was gung-ho and super excited and followed the plan to the letter. Didn't have restriction so I went in for a fill. Repeated a few times until I went in my last time (probably a year before I conceived my twins) and I told the doctor I was still hungry and when I burped I cleared my pouch. The doctor gave me a little more fluid to get restriction and when I drank water it made a gurgling sound in my esophagus so it was too tight and he took out the fluid. He said I was at my max restriction and shouldn't tighten it anymore. It's very discouraging. I haven't made up my mind 100% as I haven't seen a surgeon yet but after I had my twins I went back in and my current doctor suggested revision rather than refilling the band. Said for 50% of patients, the band does not work at all so he wasn't entirely surprised and it's falling out of favor. I don't want to do a bypass, though, if I'm still able to burp and slide whatever I eat right through my pouch I know that sounds kind of stupid because it's an entirely different setup and the stomach is literally bypassed but that was my issue before. I so wish I could find someone else who experienced this because it seems like I'm abnormal! It's like if you had a clogged drain, and then you pushed the clog aside for a second, the water would drain due to the air bubble in the clog. That's what burping did for me. I couldn't control it either, it's not like I swallowed air intentionally. But as soon as I burped the satisfied feeling left immediately. I gave up because of that. Anyway, definitely want to talk to a surgeon about this. I want a second opinion and I want to know what would be different if I DID do a revision.

Chronic pain in left side post 7 years after MGB
Solope replied to Beautimus's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I had the MGB in 2008. About 2 years after my surgery, I started having the same pain you are describing. My dr said probably an ulcer. I thought the pain was too intense for an ulcer but took some meds and figured I just had to live with it. I've had these very painful episodes for 9 years. This last Oct I had an episode that got so bad I was sobbing and curled up in a ball. My husband insisted on taking me to the ER. It ended up that I had an internal hernia (my small bowel had worked its way through a loop that was formed during the MGB) with small bowel obstruction. If my husband hadn't insisted on taking me in, I would have died. The surgeon who did the emergency surgery said I had likely had the internal hernia all those years but it hadn't turned into an obstruction until this episode when it twisted 360°. I have done a lot of research since Oct and the symptoms that I had been having all those years (and that you are having) are indicitive of an internal hernia. This is extremely serious and life threatening. I was VERY lucky to get through it without any of my bowel dying. I was however left with a horribly deformed stomache from the surgery and I'm very sick now. I now have chronic diarrhea that won't go away. I am no longer digesting any food and I've lost 25 lbs that I didn't need to lose. In my research I found out that these internal hernias are difficult to detect in gastric bypass patients and often are only found through exploratory surgery (they couldn't tell what was wrong with me till they opened me up). I hope this information is helpful and that you will have this checked asap! -
I believe the issue here is the fact that your band is not filled. You have got to get the follow up care in order for it to work. You stated that you had twins and your saline was taken out. Why didn't you have it put back in after six weeks or so from giving birth? After care is the most important part of any wls, especially the band. I had restriction only because I did eat what I was supposed to and when I lost weight and felt I could eat more, I made me an appointment and had myself checked. Sure enough I would need a fill to take up the space from losing weight. Unfortunately 8 1/2 years later, I began having problems with it. It slipped, I lost restriction, gained almost all of the weight I lost, and now I'm sleeved. I don't get stuck anymore thank God. I still have restriction after I eat. What has changed for me is my taste buds. I can't eat or drink anything with a lot of sugar and I AM SOOOO HAPPY [emoji846]. Sugar was my addiction/problem and since I've been sleeved for almost two months now, I don't have that problem anymore. My suggestion is to get a fill so that you can get back on track. If you're mind is absolutely made up on having revision surgery, then good luck to you and best wishes. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

That's great. I had Medicare for my sleeve surgery a year ago and had no trouble with approval. Good luck with your revision surgery. -

Acid Reflux after SADI, SIPS, Loop-DS
bikerchick519 replied to livefatdreamskinny's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I had the sleeve then had a revision to mgb due to reflux and I still have horrible reflux. Now I have to get a revision to full gastric bypass to get rid of the reflux. And of course insurance is refusing to pay for it. -
The interesting thing is that it didn't feel like much of a struggle. Sure, quitting smoking was a pain in the a**. And so was the regain. I lost the regain when I discovered that intuitive eating is a thing one can do after WLS. So the weight came off quite easily and I didn't restart smoking so far. All of that is long ago. About 17 years or so. To lose the second regain was also not much of a hassle eating wise because the MGB took care of it. The year between the unfill and making up my mind to really get a revision was a pain in the a** as well though. I was scared as hell and postponed for almost a year. I'm facing another revision now and I won't wait a whole year this time. It's been about three months now that surgeons recommended it (hiatoplastic, gastropexia and revision of the anastomosis) and I've finally made up my mind and hope I can schedule surgery at the end of February or begin of March.

I had my bypass 6 days ago and a surprise hernia repair. I’m healing nicely but have some constant low-level nausea. Now things like scented candles, my shampoo, dryer sheets, etc. are bothering me. I also get these phantom smells - where’s that cinnamon coming from?? It’s weird! Anyone relate?
-
@Shparks You are not alone! I'm also struggling after a huge regain. In total I lost about 75kg or 165lbs. Then I regained 27kg or 60lbs back. My surgery was only about 2 years ago. I feel like such a failure. I can't explain how bad this is. I can see why there are so many mental health issues associated with bariatric surgery. I had the sleeve but I don't know if there would be any point to a revision to the bypass for me. Nevertheless, like many on new year resolution. I'm trying all over again. I've lost about 3kg (7 pounds). It does feel like a very long road back. I just hope I can do it.

10mg Buspar & 15mg Lexapro Sleeve Compatibly
Bronte01 replied to Spouse270's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ideally, you should speak to your psychiatrist about it. The surgeon is not going to be as well versed as a dr specializing in psychotropic medications. That being said, one of the requirements for myself was psychiatric clearance before I was approved for bypass surgery. This topic should definitely come up as suggested earlier. After the surgery, the medications I took were pulverized into powder to aid in absorption. In theory, I was supposed to continue to grind my medication for months after surgery. I got sick of doing that after a few weeks and found that the stomach could digest the pills just fine. (Definately not suggesting that anybody should be as careless as I.) -
I was approved for surgery. Good vitamins and protein shakes?
Losingit2018 replied to RachaelEM's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I used premier after my sleeve surgery but find my stomach won’t tolerate them after my recent revision to bypass. I highly recommend trying these samples. https://store.bariatricpal.com/products/syntrax-nectar-protein-powder-trial-sizes-17-flavors-to-choose-from?vec=eyJ2ZVRwIjoiRk9SVU0iLCJ2clRwIjoiTU9TVF9QT1BVTEFSIiwidnJJcCI6IjEifQ%3D%3D my favorite is the chocolate truffle and I tolerate them very well. I would be Leary of a one per day vitamin. Iron and calcium will counteract each other in certain doses. Also check with your team as they may require you to start on chewables. I take the bariatric fusion. Bottle says take 4 per day but my dr assures me that if I take two twice per day I will get the same results. I like that I don’t need any extra d3, iron or calcium with these. good luck! -
R&Y Bypass 12/31/2019. New Year's Revolution!
Slimming Down Steve replied to Slimming Down Steve's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No I haven't had a hot or cold problem at all. I did have a problem getting 64oz of water in till I tried a suggestion from a friend that had a bypass 3 yrs ago. She told me to try fruit punch flavored crystal light. It's sugar free. Since I love fruit punch anyways I bought some. It was to sweet for me so I doubled the water and now get in over 80oz most days. Hope this helps you. -

I think that's more of an issue with bypass than sleeve, but I'll let other, wiser people respond to that - there are a couple of medical professionals on here. edited to add that your surgeon's office would probably know that as well - I'm assuming they get these kinds of questions all the time. -
Bypass 7/2018 I drink approx 4 cups per day with a splash of sugar free creamer

THE SLOW LOSERS CLUB SUPPORT THREAD
LadyVS replied to Serengirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That's a good point. That is also something we "slow losers" should consider, the type of surgery each of us have had. After taking my time and literally reading every post on here, I'm going to say this for myself: When I first had wls in 2010, it was with the lapband. I am what you would call a "vet" as I have another login that followed my journey at that time. It took me 2 1/2 years to lose 99 pounds and it was established then by my doctor that I would be a "slow loser". I didn't like it, but I accepted it. Second time around, it was again established by my new doctor, "You are going to lose even more slowly than you did with the band." I didn't believe him, but here I am at almost two months postop and have only lost 14 pounds. I initially lost 10 pounds during the preop diet but after surgery, I gained it back. Not trying to but by simply following my doctor's orders. He said that he doesn't even consider the first month and to keep following my plan. Well, I was only two pounds down at my month weigh in by just following his plan and it was VERY DISCOURAGING. So I took it upon myself to do something different and it's working. I am a slow loser, IT'S NOT A MYTH contrary to other's opinions. I am happy that I am losing and NOT GAINING. It just gets very discouraging that you are losing weight slowly rather than quickly. It's totally a mind thing. I lost a LOT OF INCHES in the first month and I posted that in my topic in the revision section. When I first saw this topic this morning, it made me very happy to see someone else felt defeated at times like myself. I had no idea that I would be reading about all this other stuff, but hey it's all good. I have learned new information that's for sure. I lose weight at a significantly slower rate than the average person and I realize now, I AM OKAY WITH THAT!!! Good day all. -

LadyVS replied to Serengirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Our surgery days are literally a day apart. I weighed in at 200.8 before surgery and have only lost 14 pounds, and you have lost 27. That is exactly what the OP was talking about. I know we aren't suppose to compare, but we are all suppose to being doing essentially the same things. Yes, out body build and genes are different, but still IT'S FREAKING DISCOURAGING when I am working so hard at this. It makes you feel like you don't know wtf you're doing even though you do because heck, you have done this ish before especially if you are a revision person like myself. Anyway, congrats on the 27 pound lost and many more to come in the near future.🙂 -
How long does surgery take?
Losingit2018 replied to Tiredmimi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sleeve surgery normally takes 2.5 to 3 hours is what my surgeon told me. My sleeve surgery took 3.5 hours. I just got revised to bypass. That was expected to take 4 hours but actually took 5.5 hours. It also included a hernia repair. -
Help! Before I gain it all back...
Losingit2018 replied to hernandez776's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am so very sorry to hear about your daughter. I can definitely relate to what you went through. I lost my 59 yo middle sister just a few months before my sleeve surgery. Dr suggested holding off but I chose to move forward. I did well for about 6 months when we made a big move. Shortly after our move, I had to go and stat with my mom as she was put under home hospice care. Last thing I cared about was my eating or my weight as I went through all of this. I had lost 73 pounds during my first six months but it stopped there. I gained back about 15 pounds over the next year. I really struggled trying to get back on track. About 6 months ago I developed gerd and found out that I had a large hiatal hernia. I ended up needing to revise to a bypass. I am now 7 weeks out and am determined to stay on track. I must find alternative ways to deal with things in life other than emotional eating to be successful and remain that way. I posted to offer my support and also to let you know that you are not alone. -
January 2020 Surgery Date
Starting a new chapter replied to Krimsonbutterflies's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery date for the Rouen-Y Bypass is next Friday! Jan. 17th. It will be done in Cleveland Clinic by Dr. Aminian. I am 65 and this starts a new chapter in life. I've lost 34# to reach my goal weight. I'm so excited. However, having some trouble. I am one week into my protein shakes (800 cal) and clear liquids. I am so weak and shaky. Does anyone know if this just me having to adjust and it taking time? I'm afraid if I am feeling this way after surgery, I will fail. This is not a good feeling! I wont be able to exercise. What's your thoughts? -
Females over 40, how "fast' did you lose with RNY?
froufrou replied to Panda333's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had sleeve surgery (which failed due to a leak) in Sept '17. I was 365 before surgery - I lost 80 lbs. By the time I went for my bypass revision I was up to over 300 again. I had the bypass last year in February and I'm now down to 239. It's slow for me too... I have PCOS. I am perimenopausal. I have a lifetime of bad ways of eating to deal with, but I am losing and I intend on carrying on even if it's slow. Like Dory says... Just keep swimming, just keep swimming. Now if I falter, it's not the end of the world. I continue to analyse what I'm doing and make corrections. I know that you posted this a while ago, but I hope this helps. It looks like you are doing an amazing job! Just keep swimming!
