Why did you choose the surgery you had/will have?
catwoman7 replied to KlaPV's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
since you have acid reflux, you should seriously consider bypass. Sleeve doesn't make all reflux worse, but it happens to enough people that I'm not sure I'd want to risk it. -
Why did you choose the surgery you had/will have?
ms.sss replied to KlaPV's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi @KlaPV: See below... pre-diabetic: tested and resolved by my 1 week post op appointment PCOS : n/a fatty liver: tested and resolved by my 3 month post op appointment infertility: I never checked if I was infertile (I'm 47 and we are done with kids!!), but my period was very sporadic pre-op for years, sometimes going months & months without it, and it was very, very light if/when I did get it. I thought perhaps I was transitioning to menopause. My first post-op period was within a month of surgery and it was HEAVY (so heavy I thought something was wrong, lol). Then I've been clockwork every since, every 4 weeks, with medium flow (just like when I was skinnier years ago). acid reflux (mild to moderate - no GERD): n/a** ** BTW, with your mild to moderate acid reflux you may want to lean bypass...?? -

Thank you everyone for your stories. I'm still waiting on a call from my doctor for my first appointment, but I'm doing a ton of research beforehand (thus my reason for joining the forums!). My surgeon offers three surgeries: lap band, gastric sleeve, and gastric bypass. I'm torn between the sleeve and bypass. Some of my symptoms (besides being overweight, obviously): pre-diabetic PCOS fatty liver infertility acid reflux (mild to moderate - no GERD) Those that had some (or all) of these symptoms, how soon did your symptoms get better or be resolved completely? I'm not looking for a quick fix, and I'm aware that this will entail a MAJOR lifestyle change, but I'm curious as to how soon some of the negative symptoms I currently have can start working themselves out. -
Chill out its mental games going on! This is a common thread here - You have to ask yourself a few questions 1. The current lifestyle you are living is it going to kill you? Fat People Die 2. Do i want to get healthy and live longer? You do the surgery and follow the plan its guaranteed As for the pain, The rewards are much better then the discomfort, This is not a painful surgery, Get your chest cut open for bypass and break your sternum that is a painful surgery. Read around this site - yes you have hell week like marine boot camp but then it gets better every day, Just sleep it off - buckle down and plow thru it. Look around you there are others who need you! So live and be healthy or go on amazon and buy a Urn cuz you are currently killing yourself so the jar is soon to come after you get diabetis and other issues related to being obese! The support you get here is unlimited, and nobody here went dancing into the surgery not nervous it is common, but we all did it and so can you - It really is not that bad of a procedure Aj

gastric bypass side effects
catwoman7 replied to skyewolfe's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
diarrhea isn't common. The vast majority of us deal with the opposite problem - constipation! Although that's true of sleeve patients, too. It's not the surgery - it's the high protein diet plus some of the supplements - i.e., iron and calcium, both of which tend to back even non-surgery people up. I've had no issues with my bypass - well, other than chronic constipation (which again, most of us deal with). I just take a capful of Miralax every day to stay on top of it. I'm very happy I had the surgery and would do it again in a heartbeat! -
January 2020 Surgery Date
elsie77 replied to Krimsonbutterflies's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all, I am now nearly 48 hours post op band to mini bypass. Band removal and bypass done at the same time. All has gone well. There was pain but it was well managed and tolerable. There was also a small bit of nausea. The first day I ate/drank nothing. The second day after bloods and X-ray, I was allowed water. Today, the drain was removed (along with most of the pain) and I was given a tray with tea, Dutch crispbake with butter/jam and a yogurt. No issues with any of it. My surgery was done by Dr. Chris DeBruyne in Belgium, I cannot recommend him and his team highly enough. Now, to learn to use my tool to the best advantage, I’m looking forward to it :) -
gastric bypass side effects
New&Improved replied to skyewolfe's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well if your on liquid diet you'll get the runs that's just normal I had it for about 2 weeks.. I've had bypass now for almost 3 months no major issues really.. Get light headed sometimes but I eat very low calories. I can't remember anything serious besides the usual soreness after surgery.. -
Not sure if anyone remembers me since it's been a while since I posted. I finally got the surgery date for my gastric bypass! It's on March 2nd 2020. Naturally I'm super nervous I've never had major surgery. Recently, I've been talking to some other people who have mentioned some side effects they had then nobody warned them about, such as severe diarrhea. So, that's made me wonder, what side effects did you experience post-surgery that you wish someone had warned you about.

Lap Band Removal and Revision Suggestions Needed
Losingit2018 replied to soccermonster31's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I agree. Most surgeons would recommend bypass if reflux is involved. -
Surgery twins now that I have a New Surgery Date!! 🙏🏼😀 Well I went to my follow 2 week Post Op today..it was suppose to be a revision but could only remove the Lapband due to scar tissue... I walked in the office today and the Surgeon says he was “so sorry he couldn’t do both surgeries at same time.” “How does April 7th sound for your gastric bypass?” YES! Hell YES! Let’s get this done already😂

I've scheduled my revision for 26th February. Hopefully things will go as I plan.

Lap Band Removal and Revision Suggestions Needed
soccermonster31 replied to soccermonster31's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
So I had a consult with the surgeon that did my upper GI. He is recommending I revise to the Sleeve. His estimate is I will lose the same amount of weight with the Sleeve or with Bypass, but Bypass has greater risk of complication. I have a couple friends who have the sleeve and didn't loose the weight they wanted to, hit a plateau and have gained back some weight. I'm worried about that. A complication of my band has been GERD, so I am also worried about that continuing if I have the sleeve. The surgeon really seemed to be pushing the sleeve, same with his office staff. But it was the same 10 years ago when I had the lap band, and now that has fallen out of favor...will the same happen with the sleeve? Should I just go with my gut and do the bypass??? -
Why did you choose the surgery you had/will have?
JRT Mom replied to KlaPV's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a slipped lap band that needed to come out. My surgeon said he'd do either procedure, but it was preferred to revise a lap band to an RNY in one procedure than the sleeve, and I wanted it all done in one surgery since I live 4 hours away from my surgeon. Also, I had terrible GERD before my lap band so the surgeon suggested the RNY to help keep the GERD from coming back. So far, so good! -

JRT Mom replied to TakinThePlunge's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm happy you have been able to keep your band with good success! I totally agree with you that if you're not having issues with your band there's no reason to remove it. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Unfortunately many of us old bandsters have had to have ours removed for various reasons and gotten revisions. I don't miss mine at all... -
1.5 years out & still throwing up?
SparklyInNOut replied to SparklyInNOut's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So I’m now 3 days out from reparative surgery. My surgeon removed scar tissue and converted to a RNY Bypass bc he was not sure he could straighten out my sleeve enough. He also repaired my hiatal hernia. Said he removed a “ball of tissue & mesh.” 😳😳😳 He did say repairs fail sometimes bc that was from my previous hiatal hernia repair. This surgery I got to stay in the hospital for a night. It was great to be supported as I started healing & drinking water. I’m also home with a drain (kinda gross) which he does for any revision. Everything looks good though. Drinking my meds & water is already so much easier than recovering from my sleeve! I can tell a huge difference. I do have shoulder pain which they’ve told me is not gas but “positional pain” due to having my arms in one position for the entire 2.5 hour surgery. Thankfully, that means pain killers help. The hospital pushed fentanyl as much as they could once they figured out why I was pretty much screaming in pain. Then I had a morphine button I could push every 7 minutes. I walked a TON in the hospital. When they took me off of the pain meds, I ended up in severe pain again, and they had to give me another dose to make it home. Couldn’t sleep last night but got new pain meds this morning which really help. Would I do it again? Yes. Complications happen. The soreness will decrease. The healing will happen. More weight will come off. It’s going to all be ok. I’m just glad I finally got someone to listen to me. -

Why did you choose the surgery you had/will have?
Puffy-no-more replied to KlaPV's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I chose gastric bypass for a couple reasons. I know everyone doesn't get it, but I feel like the dumping syndrome Would be a help to me long term to stay on track just in case I considered straying a little. And second, I know this isn't everyone but I've seen alot of stories of people needing to get the revision from sleeve to bypass and I don't want to have to go through this again. Like everyone else said, talk it over with your doc. He/she will be able to help you come to a decision. -

I did not suffer from GERD pre-op so my Doc left the decision up to me. He told me he does do more RNY's and that it is the "Gold Standard", but that is because its just been around longer. He has seen successes (and failures) among both. He told me he feels that that success lays more with the patient than the type of surgery. He wanted me to choose whichever one I felt most comfortable with to my body. Ultimately, I chose Sleeve because: I didn't like the idea of re-routing my intestines I wanted to have my pyloric valve intact I wanted to be able to take NSAIDS (or time-realase meds) if I ever needed to I didn't want to increase my chances of dumping (Boo on me: I dump anyways ) I didn't want the malabsorption effect and have to take more vitamins (Boo on me again: I was prescribed the same vitamin regimen 🙄 ) I stuck to my plan pretty strictly during weight loss phase and got to goal in 7 months with a 110 lbs loss & a BMI of 23 at the time (I am 14 months post op now with a total loss of 120 lbs & a BMI of 21) Honestly though, I'm pretty sure I would have got to the same place with either surgery. Do your research, take in the advice/recommendations of your doc/team, and go with your gut ❤️ Good Luck! P.S. the one thing though that I thought was a "pro" for me to go bypass was that theoretically it was reverseable (I was totally scared at the time) 😂 -

Any surgery makes me a little nervous. I think this one is making me nervous because it's a second revision and I think it's a lot more complicated than the others. -

I too wanted the bypass to lose the maximum amount of weight and my doctor felt I could achieve the same results with the sleeve even though I suffered from GERD. I trust my doctor and I'm very happy with my surgery. I have not had any issues with GERD since my surgery. 5'4" Starting weight 297 VSG on 7/31/19 Surgery wt: 266 CW 206 GW 135 Sent from my [samsung Galaxy] using BariatricPal mobile app -
Why did you choose the surgery you had/will have?
New&Improved replied to KlaPV's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There's reality only two options in my city which was sleeve or bypass RNY. I did tons of research and decided on RNY for various reasons. 1. I wanted the Malabsorption aspect. 2. I wanted greater chance of fixing my diabetes which it did pretty quickly; was off all diabetes medications within a week of surgery. 3. I wanted the metabolic changes that came with the redirection of intestines because i believe my metabolism was so bad after decades of bad food choices. 4. I wanted the most restrictive procedure available and only wanted one surgery; most of my research showed many people being revised after sleeve surgery to bypass for many reasons. I am very very happy but I've been very strict on myself from day 1. Almost 5 months later and I'm down 126lbs from highest weight. But everyone has their own preference and reasons to what surgery they like. -

I had GERD, Barrett's esophagitis from the acid, and even a Barrett's polyp that was removed. It was a slam dunk for gastric bypass if I wanted to avoid the acid and possible progression to cancer, I am happy to report that 10 months after surgery, a follow up EGD showed NO Barretts! I have an ulcer but no Barrett's. -

catwoman7 replied to KlaPV's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had GERD before surgery, so it was a no-brainer: bypass. Bypass often (but not always) improves GERD if not cures it completely, whereas sleeve can (but not always) make it worse. if it weren't for that, I probably still would have had bypass because at the time I had surgery, VSG was just becoming popular. Bypass had A LOT more research behind it, and I was afraid of VSG becoming "Lapband 2". However, sleeve has now been around long enough to prove itself. It's not "Lapband 2" - it's a good surgery. So if it weren't for the GERD, I'm not sure which surgery I would have chosen if I was facing it right now. They're both good surgeries, and I've known a lot of people who've had great success with both.
