Band over Bypass revision surgery
Petagale replied to juni1080's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi everyone so new to this. I had the sleeve surgery in November 2016. I have been having regurgitation for the past 2 years and endoscopes shows that I have moderate gastritis my upper gi showed I have a trace of gastroesophagal reflux. I have used every anti acid nothing works. I am currently meeting with the surgeon to go through revision to rny. But i am not sure if I have to do the six months weigh in due to it only being a revision due to reflux. I have Cigna open access -
Band over Bypass revision surgery
elcee replied to juni1080's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Is he talking about using an actual lapband or placing a minimiser ring. If it is the ring it supposedly has less issues than the band. It is now commonly done at the same time as a bypass op although as an exbander it wasn’t something I wanted, I’m too wary. -
Band over Bypass revision surgery
New&Improved replied to juni1080's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I don't see how or why a band would ever be offered when the RNY is one of the best surgeries available...? A band is old technology with known complications.. I have heard that the bypass can be revised by overstitch to tighten the pouch up if needed... I don't know what the band will do to help if the bypass didn't do it already... -
Band over Bypass revision surgery
juni1080 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Has anyone had band over bypass revision surgery? I had RNY bypass surgery in 2002. I lost about 80lbs, but never lost as much as I had hoped/expected. Over the years, I've gained back 50-60lbs. After 5 years of trying everything to lose the weight, I went for a consultation to discuss revision options. My Dr. suggested placing a lap band over the original bypass. Has anyone had this procedure done? How successful was this revision? Has anyone found any other successful revision options? -
Has anyone been prescribed Ozempic pre-surgery?
nerdygrl replied to DrSchaffner's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I took it for about a year for weight loss (not diabetic.) It made me so ill plus it is seriously expensive. I’m 7 weeks post bypass and so much happier without the Ozempic in my life. -
How are my fellow December surgeries doing?
ItalianSuzy replied to lys's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had gastric bypass on 12/31. Doctor still has me on liquid diet but I see her this week and I hope she advances me. I’m sick of protein shakes. I was 245 on surgery and today I’m at 220. I’ve lost 25lbs in almost three weeks. My stomach feels okay but sometimes if I drink something really cold it feels weird. -
Hey there how are we all? Almost one month already gone of 2020! Its been a tough week only managed to drop just 4 lbs; my slowest week yet I believe Well I've been doing a bit of fasting the past few days. As of today I'm now 194lbs 😀😀😀 ============================== Should be picking up my new rowing machine this week and that should definitely help burn the fat off my belly area lol. Been buying new clothes and it feels great. I feel so happy and excited for the future and this surgery RNY BYPASS was the best choice ever!! Will be going to see my surgeon in a couple weeks for the 3 month post op checkup. Hopefully all my levels are good 😀 TAKE CARE. Mike.

I was able to get through the 1st stage. I've spoken to the clinic in Portland. OWL. They told me they are just now processing the paperwork and we will get the ball rolling soon on making appointments for the second stage. I completed the online seminar and filled out the application PDF. My Dietician MD sent out the referral and she, the weight loss clinic, and Molina have all said that the first stage is complete. I was given CPT codes by the clinic for bypass and the sleeve. Molina confirmed that they will cover both if I meet the requirements. I was told that I may be able to do a sleep study at home and mail it back in. So that is definitely one less worry. Here is a current list of requirements for pre-surgery/surgery. I haven't been able to find may people that have information about going through this insurance recently. All I could find was two dead posts asking if anyone knew anything about Molina in Washington. Both did not have a reply. My worries are that I'll have to drive to Portland 12 times minimum for only some of the visits over the next 6 months. Along with all of the other requirements like seeing a sleep specialist, psychological evaluation, etc. This is only a problem because I live an hour and a half away. I'm worried that may not let me see someone locally for some or all of these things. Does it really have to be 6 months, can it be less? I know you can get an extension. I'm also sure it would be hard to cram in several visits in a short time. I still wonder if there is any sort of legal loophole any other clinics may use? Anything like less time or fewer visits. I live in a rural area and between my husband's health, work, time and financial constraints, I'm starting to wonder If I need to wait. Healthwise my HBP is getting worse and isn't responding well to diet or medication. We have small children and he has extreme exhaustion from having SCA 5 years ago. I'm not sure I'll be able to make it to visits that are 1 1/2 hours away. Is there truly no way to fast track something like this if the Insurance has such detailed and extensive protocols? Would none of the information I have from dietitians over the last few years count? Does it all have to be new information? Health Information: 315lb, 5'5, HBP, PCOS, Social Anxiety, Joint Pain, Lower Back Pain without Sciatica, Postpartum Hernia. I'm not sure if all of these details were only needed for the first stage of authorization. Has anyone been able to speed up the process? (Probably Wishful thinking.) Thank you to anyone that took the time to read this and anyone that may have answers or advice for me. -Fhionafaye

January 2020 Surgery Date
Taj replied to Krimsonbutterflies's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So great that you didn’t have to do two or three weeks of the liquid diet post surgery. I find that constantly sipping liquids seems to be reinforcing my habit of constantly putting something in my mouth and I’m ready to get on a eating schedule that will help reinforce new eating habits. Really strange that every doctor has different guidelines but that all say we must follow their diet plan if we want to have success with healing. My surgeon even wrote a book titled Weightloss for Dummies-yep, it’s a legitimate “for dummies” book and I didn’t know about the book until after my surgery. Also didn’t know she was the surgeon who performed Al Roker’s gastric bypass (I’m sure many younger folks have never heard of Al Roker). At any rate, the book has fabulous recipes written by a chef who had wls and I can’t wait to try them. I’m two weeks post op tomorrow and all incisions completely healed, no reflux at all (thanks to sippy cup), and I honestly feel better than I’ve felt in years. I’m sleeping well at night with no need for caffeine to get through the day. VSG has changed my life. Oh, down 15 pounds and already see significant changes in my face and body. Best of luck to all you January surgybabes!! -
To sleeve or not to sleeve, that is the question!

Good evening, Hi everybody, I'm newbie here, currently waiting for revision approval. I'm a Lap Band failure case - Had it in for 11 years (actually loved it - it was a great tool), and got to goal weight after 18 months. I kept it off without much issue, until it eroded into my stomach, and pretty much almost killed me. This was the third issue that I had with the band. Two port infections, lead to port revisions, and one MRSA infection. It was finally removed in 2015, and sadly, now I'm back up to where I was before my banding. I'm currently in my 5th month of 6 monitoring/counseling, for pre-op revision approval for bypass. Unfortunately, I've also since gained 6lbs. since I started that monitoring [during the holidays]. I know that I'm being a bit, "It's my last _______, and I want to enjoy it" . I've followed every class, every appointment, and every health test, but still have not heard back about my "March" surgery date for bypass. I have one more nutrition appointment as required by BCBS, and one more evening 'STRIVE' support counseling meeting that must be done for revision surgeries as per my doctor's office. I'm just panicked that I've been going through all of this, but have not heard anything regarding a yes or no at this point. I'm currently at a BMI of 39.4 with sleep apnea (on CPAP), severe heartburn, failed back fusion surgery, Lupus, Fibromyalgia, and am in LOTS of pain - 100% disabled since 1995, so Medicare is my primary with BCBS of GA secondary. Has anybody gone through the six month pre surgery hoops only to get turned down? I'm just so worried that it's going to be a no go decision. I really appreciate that this page/group is here, and look forward to hearing from y'all! Thanks 🙂

My wrinkles on my face and neck are much less noticeable almost 3 years post-gastric bypass due to applying & re-applying sunscreen EVERYDAY, using Tretinoin, putting Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides (bought at Costco) in my coffee every morning after my derm recommended it, and Fraxel laser resurfacing. All of these things help build and/or prevent loss of collagen, and improve fine lines, wrinkles, skin tone and laxity. I look so much younger now based on reactions from people who haven’t seen me in awhile. If you’re thinking of getting Thermage or laser treatments, please make sure to do so with a board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon to ensure your money is well spent and to minimize post-procedure issues/complications. Good luck with your anti-aging journey after WLS. 😀

Sorry I never saw this post from you. I did pretty good weight wise but have had horrible acid reflux that the mgb was supposed to fix but for me it didn't. So here I am about to have a revision to full bypass because I can't take the reflux any longer. -

How did your surgery go? My insurance denied me so I'm going back to Mexico for revision on Feb 3rd. Since you're from the KC area like me we should meet sometime and chat. Kinda like a support group lol. Are you part of a wls support group? -

Thinking about a bypass (band in 2013), interested to know how effective taking all these supplements are. How many have had blood tests to check your levels? Do they give you sufficient nutrients given your smaller appetite? Thanks for answering. -
To sleeve or not to sleeve, that is the question!
Sosewsue61 replied to curvee gêne rosa's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Only an EGD will give you answers to the condition of your band and whether there is too much damage to do a revision to sleeve or bypass. Many banded people do get revised because of this type of issue. I wish you the best in your medical decisions. -
Hello! I am currently in my 5th week post gastric bypass. My question is when did you all eat a protein bar? What ones were you able to tolerate and taste good? I will Be traveling to Europe around week 11 and I want to bring something that I know I can eat.

I had a revision from VSG to RNY bypass on Monday, 1/13/20. I had major complications with the VSG, and that was the only option. I ended up with a pinched nerve in my left shoulder due to the position my arm was in during the long surgery, so I’ve been on painkillers a bit longer than planned. Enough back story! Today I’m on full liquids for my seconds day. Not my first time at the rodeo with the graduated diet. However, I’m having liquid poo. Cannot trust a fart (lol)! Is this a concern that I should call the dr’s line over the weekend for, or is this a common issue? I go back to his office first thing Tuesday to get my drain out. That’s the first time they’re open again.

Effect on families
James Marusek replied to H8thissurgery's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
According to this story, the gastric bypass surgery was done in 2007 and supposedly performed by an expert. I underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2013 and this story doesn't make much sense from my perspective. Before and after surgery, I underwent many steps. Firstly I had to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to see if I was qualified for the surgery, if there were underlying psychiatric issue that drove the weight gain, they had to be remediated prior to approval for surgery. In order to qualify for the surgery, my insurance required that I undergo a six month program of weight loss and exercise. I had to attend monthly support group meetings. Then there were a variety of medical tests that were performed to detect any medical conditions that may affect the outcome. So over a year went by since I started the process before I had the surgery. I also underwent a day of classroom training prior to the surgery that included very detailed information covering almost every aspect of the surgery and what was to follow and given a 1 inch binder of material to constantly refer to. After the surgery, I lost 120 pounds over the first 7 months. It was difficult because of the extent of the requirements (food types, food volumes, vitamin, etc.) But overall I was please with the surgery. Then there was yearly follow-ups. Gastric bypass surgery requires that the individual must take many types of vitamins for the rest of their lives. If someone fails to take those, their bodies will experience Vitamin deficiencies which caused damage in multiple organs. That is known up front. Every year for the first 5 years, I underwent extensive blood work. These test measured my various vitamin levels and allowed my doctor to fine tweak the vitamin levels. Also there was a mechanism in place for a psychologist in the event that psychological problems arose post surgery. There are many people involved in this process, not just the surgeon. They included nutritionist, psychologist, support group meetings etc. In order for this surgery to work effectively, it depends upon the compliance of the patient to follow the guidelines given and seek help when problems arise. -
No revision or push for revision

Revise. That’s what I did with no regrets so far. It is really the only long term solution for those of us that have gerd after sleeve. -

My sleeve was done 8/1/14. I had my hernia and esophagus repaired 12/2019. Bypass was the best option. However, not covered by my insurance. I knew this after months of appeals. Now, my surgeons and other doctors would like me have bypass. However, at this point I am not sure that is my best option. My sleeve is "perfect." I just don't want to have more complications. I just want to get healthier and lose more weight. That is happening because I can again barely eat. So, I am going to wait. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using BariatricPal mobile app -
I was drinking like 30 oz in week 1 and 60oz in week 2 but with bypass... Everyone is different though.
