February 2019 weight loss buds
TheMarine79 replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Recidivist, things are going fine. They put me on a keto style diet. I can eat meat and non starch veggies. No sugar, no dairy no starch like potatoes or pasta, and no fruit. I can have almonds or cashews. I have been doing this a week all ready. Today, I only ate once all day and could not figure out why I was starving. So I got some meat for dinner tonight. The tough thing about this diet is we have been without power at our house for the last three days. But I have stuck to the diet -
Transformation Tuesday
pr_pitbullgrl replied to pr_pitbullgrl's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
i guess this is my last post for a while cuz i'm not losing any more weight for now. imma stay at 145 for a while and see how that goes. i weigh myself every day just to make sure i stay on track. still pretty much keto 100%. -
DISCLAIMER: The following is what *I* did based on my own research and trial end error on how things affected *MY* body. I am NOT advocating to NOT listen to your team without educating yourself. With that said: Edited to add: I didn't realize this post would be so long, sorry! My program was to consume pre-defined "portions": each meal was supposed to consist of 25% protein, 25% starch and 50% non-starchy vegetables, and to work my way up to 1200 calories per day total with a min 60-70g protein. They also said to avoid added sugar. The didn't specifically mention to go low fat, but I mean if I followed the guidelines listed above, it would naturally be low-ish fat. Needless to say, I didn't do that. First, I couldn't get that amount of food in, Second, I tried it out, saw a swoosh in weight, and figured that going low-carb was very effective in weight loss for ME. I kept losing weight, so I just kept doing it. Why fix what ain't broke, right? More on this later... So for the majority of my weight loss phase I went ultra-low carb...was averaging less than 20 NET g of carbohydrates per day (i don't count fibre nor sugar alcohols), aimed to reach 60g protein per day, and let the fat fall where it may. My cals were about 300-400 in the first couple months, and by the time I reached goal, I was at about 800 (yes, I know this is on the low end compared to most, but it worked for ME). P.S. I feel the need to add that my nutritionist was made aware of what I was doing. And while she tut-tutted me about it, she didn't overly object. Also, all my labs came back satisfactorily during this period (and still does), and my surgeon was pleased. ***WARNING, MATH TIME...*** Given the total calories I was achieving, I wasn't truly doing KETO proper, as my fat consumption did not reach the levels required for my protein intake. True KETO is 70-80% fat, 10-20% protein & 5-10% carbs. Since I was doing 60g of protein, I would have needed to do ~75g of fat, which would have put me in the 1100 cal range...and I wasn't even coming close to that level. **** So really, I was probably doing more a version of Atkins Phase 1 (ultra-low carb). Now that I'm 3 years out, I am no longer so strict about my macros. I still *kinda* limit carbs, but not really. I eat bread on occasion, and sugar pretty regularly (in small amounts)...but i very rarely eat pasta or rice. I think its just habit now? Looking back, here is my take/opinion on going this route: TRUE Keto is very difficult to achieve in weight loss phase while keeping cals low. There is a relatively big drop in weight in the beginning of each period of going low carb. There is a bunch of science to explain this, you can google it. Going low carb makes a difference in how my face and body looks. While it looks good on my body, cuz you can see more muscle definition, its not so great on my face cuz I look gaunt. I've come to the conclusion that FOR ME, in terms of weight loss/maintenance ONLY, the ingestion of carbs has much, much less impact (if any) than calories consumed. It doesn't seem to matter if 1000 calories is made up 5% carbs or 50% carbs, I'll lose weight on it either way. Good Luck! ❤️

I was told not to do keto because it has too much fat in those diets... it messes up your system.

Weight gain. Healthy snacks needed
summerset replied to goldenbarbie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You already said that emotional/stress eating seems to be the real culprit. Why not working from there? Sooner or later you will give in into the real yummy stuff instead of snacking on the lowcarb/lowfat/highprotein/keto/lowcalorie/whatever godawful substitutes that are available nowadays. What deems a healthy snack depends on the one who's recommending it. However, all the healthy snacks and food and back-to-basics in the world won't keep you from regaining in the long run if you can't stop the stress eating because "life will happen" again... and again... and again. -
July 2023 buddies?
Starr2015 replied to LibrarianErin's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ugh so at work on Day 2 of pre-op diet. I had some shredded red cabbage with lemon juice and a small packet of salt, a diet peach snapple, and 2 shakes so far. Also a decaf iced coffee with almond milk and fake sweetener. I feel like.... I have a flu. But it is day 1.5. I should not have the "keto flu" already and wonder if it is just my anxiety poking me and making little things turn into stressful things which trigger my migraines and pain. When I did my OG sleeve in 2018, I was off from work during this 2 week preop. Going to work while doing this is so much extra. Thankfully I am now in an office vs field job but still. My SADI-S is the 26th and all I can think about is I want food, soup, hearty. Choking down cabbage and lemon (which I do actually like!) makes me gag. -
Jan. 12th: How I eat now: Sugar. Nah. Stevia Cereal and milk. Nope. Yogurt and granola is bae. Sandwiches. Ha! Lettuce wraps or ryvita crispbread open-face sandwich Salads galore, vegetables abound, tea love, coffee plays (on repeat with protein shakes as creamer or half and half sometimes) Most animal protein consumption still rare, mostly fish I ❤ legumes and nuts I ❤ spring waters, the better... The better lol. Sometimes I add stur or true lemon water enhancers to tolerate low class water... The struggle is real y'all Splurging when I feel like but honestly if it's says diabetic, Keto or protein in the label lol

Elahnen replied to ShoppGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Might be ok with orange juice and vodka or cranberry and vodka or both lol! Get creative. I looked up ideas on Pinteret for Keto cocktails and low/no sugar cocktails..there are lots of ideas and I’m sure you could mix those in with most of them. -
Out With the Old--In With the New!
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Day 7 and Week 1 are in the bag. Cheat free! Relatively drama free--no small animals were harmed in the making of this week long epic!!! Wahhhhhh. Slap my ass and call me Fanny! And I'm down 8.4lbs. That dog WILL hunt, Sis! Surprisingly, the week went out with a whimper. I had zero appetite yesterday and had a bit of that anorexia-high going--you know, where you have great energy, feel like you look like a brick **** house, and are just a tiny bit high/light headed feeling? So I decided to ride the wave and see where it petered out. Turns out that it ran all the way until 10pm. When I was looking around for someone to play with and everyone was sleeping. So. Much. Energy. Damn you Celebrate 3-in-1 MultiVitamin Stick and Vitamin B1 (thiamine=the energy vitamin)!!! Damn you to hell! At 1am, I'd only managed to force down 2 Premier Protein drinks (60g protein), and about eleventy billion cups of black decaf coffee. I was watching the YouTube tell me about how to hunt, fish, and cook if I was part of a primitive tribe living in Asia and only using primitive tools. This morning, I have a little hunger, but it acts a little like a whipped pup. It's wimperin' a bit, but if I give it the stink eye, it backs down into submission. I honestly seriously questioned whether I would be able to get through this 2 week period. I'm not so worried about post surgery. I know there will be little hunger/drive to eat; and I KNOW it will be filled with suckage as any surgery is--at least for me. I know I will have 3 months of a serious learning curve that will be filled with challenges, and I think I'm prepared. But I honestly, didn't know if I would be able to travel the straight and narrow for a week--let alone 2 weeks. Food/cooking is such an enormous part of my DNA. I grew up in a Southern family of very talented cooks (men and women) and have cooked since I was 6 years old. I am a foodie, true blue. So this week of liquids has been eye opening. I would just say for anyone reading, if you know your 2 week diet is approaching--then do yourself a favor. Go Atkins or low carb keto for the 2 weeks prior to the 2 week liquid (at least). Go ahead and have your cheats and falls as you do it, cuz you'll hit the liquid stage and you won't have nearly as much angst as you would have going fully carbed up, then screeching to a stop with the liquid diet. I'd also give up the caffeine and carbonation before hand as well. You will infinitely decrease the level of suckage. Here's Day 7 Menu: (I kept it very clean, rather than spicing up my bullion.) -
I'll be 7 years post gastric sleeve in December. I never reached goal, but lost 80 lbs. I managed to keep most of it off for about 4 years and slowly the carbs crept back into my life and the weight gain began. I gained 35 lbs back and I'm so disgusted with myself. It took me so long to get the courage to finally have WLS. I was so nervous and afraid that I swore if I put myself through surgery I would never gain all my weight back. I've tried Keto, and did really well for about a year and a half until I was no longer losing and just couldn't commit to the lifestyle. It seems I've lost any will power I may once had and I really don't want to get a revision if I can help it. How do I restart my weight loss? I know I've probably stretched my pouch. Do I go back to drinking shakes? Has anyone had any success in losing their significant weight gain without having to have a revision, or is a revision in my future?
-
Well really doing keto is not super high fat. You set your protein goals based on your lean mass. Then you set your other goals around that. When I was trying to lose harder, my calories and fat grams and calories were lower. These are my current macro goals, It is still a deficit daily but not as high. This is what my macros used to be around 6 months post op, then I increased my protein based on my DEXA scans... Honestly I rarely hit my goal for fat, I always hit my goal for protein and I always keep my carbs under 25. This is how I have eaten pretty much the whole time. The way you eat doesn't matter. What does matter is finding a way to eat that you can stick to easily while remaining on a calories deficit. I thought you were getting a revision. You keep making the same posts over and over about regain but none of the advice anyone gives you seems to be sticking.

Any April surgery buddies
mitchjoann132010 replied to Relle2190's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel like I know all of the information, I started the process 10 months ago but due to my insurance being so strict I had to attend many classes, seminars, appointments, clearances, over the phone courses, etc. So I feel like the knowledge is there, however from joining this site I am learning new things every day, especially when looking at the post op forums. I know unexpected things will pop up and am prepared for the stalls including the famous 3 week stall and some initial weight gain from water immediately after surgery. Vitamins are something I definitely need to work on. My vitamin D was previously low but I am working on that. Iron is also another issue that I need to be prepared for as I am borderline anemic. I've heard of many post ops being hospitalized and having health issues from not keeping up with their Iron. Working in healthcare I have access to the providers and their knowledge on the subject. One thing with multivitamins is if you overdose on Iron that can be an issue too that can cause issues with your can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and in extreme cases liver failure. Therefore, I am going to be in constant contact with my provider and request routine blood work on all of my levels. Since we have surgery in April, most of us will be meeting our deductibles and out of pocket max so aside from any copay's we can get as much work done that our insurance deems as medically necessary. This includes blood work and labs on nutrition and vitamin levels. For instance, my deductible is $750 and out of pocket max is $3000. Since my surgery is around $30,000 I met my out of pocket max of $3000 and can get as much work done as I need to for the remainder of the year. Again, copay's still need to be paid for each visit. If I get blood work done by my primary care provider my copay is only $10 compared to the $50 to go to a specialist who will do the same thing. So in general I feel like I am pretty prepared when it comes to the aftercare and communication with my provider's and insurance policies to make sure I can keep in touch with my body to know where I am deficient and what vitamins I will need to increase during the weight loss. I still have a lot to learn about the vitamins. I just cannot get past the taste of chewable vitamins. I tried the Flinstone Chewables my surgeon's office recommended and they are absolutely disgusting with an aftertaste that returns all day. Therefore, I think crushing my pills and putting them in yogurt might be my best option. One tablespoon I do not think will be too hard to get down. I have to take anxiety medication anyways so this won't be too hard I think. In regards to protein, I am currently doing Premier Protein and I am in LOVE!! They recently came out with new flavors such as Oreo & Cream, Peaches & Cream, Caramel, Banana & Cream, along with their traditional of Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberries & Cream. The reason I chose this was it has 30 grams of protein in 11oz so even if I cannot consume much in a day, 2 shakes meets my minimum protein for the day and can also double as liquids so will at least give me 22 oz of that. It has 1 gram of sugar per shake, 160 calories, 24 vitamins and nutrients, 5 grams of carbs, and 3 grams of fat, so it works perfect for the traditional Keto Diet. Along with this I will buy myself a rotisserie chicken and slowly pick through that throughout the week. Seems like a pretty cheap diet and I can treat myself to steak every once in a while. My nutritionist wants me to get my protein intake for the day before I move to vegetables, and then carbs which I will rarely be able to ever meet during the weight loss period. After surgery I am prepared for the possibility of not being able to consume Premier Protein anymore. A lot of people say dairy becomes hard to consume after surgery, in which case I think the clear, non dairy Isopure would be a great substitute. Popsicles made from protein drinks also sounds like a fabulous idea. I'd love any other suggestions anyone else may have, and am SUPER excited to get to meet some fellow April Sleever's. I'd love to keep in touch so we can all help each other on our journey!! -
I hope it goes well for you. You will most likely loose a good deal of weight initially. However, my long term keto friends still struggle with weight maintenance over time, Sustainability and nutritional balance can be issues. I know I would never be able to handle the high fat load of a keto plan. I have been on a whole food plant based plan (WFPB) for about 6 months now and doing great, feeling great. Weight is well controlled and I am NEVER hungry. I eat 8-10 servings of nutritionally dense veggies/fruit every day, along with at least 3 servings of legumes/tofu/tempeh, 2 servings of whole grains, and a wide variety of nuts and seeds. I get at least 60 grams of protein daily, All my labs are great. My cholesterol dropped from 235 to 152 and LDL is actually BELOW normal range! Even 100+ pound weight loss did nothing for my cholesterol and high LDL. Interestingly, when looking at populations with the greatest longevity and members over 100 years old, all of them are plant based with very little animal protein. Hmmmmmm. The highest rates of osteoporosis and hip fracture are in populations that consume the most meat and dairy products. Hmmmmmm. Food for thought. Bottom line for me is that WFPB is healthy, sustainable, and affordable. I do triathlons, distance biking and hiking (aiming for a one day, rim-to-rim Grand Canyon hike and a 100 mile bike race next year), and I feel great with loads of energy! WFPB allows one to enjoy plenty of healthy carbs that are incredibly satisfying and which provide a lot of energy. I never feel deprived.

Vegan Keto=meal prep being an extreme sport. After having surgery I became one of the pickiest eats. I mean food going bad because I was still trying to eat all the food I use to like and it was making me sick. So I stopped eating pork beef turkey and chicken. Didn’t really phase me. I was eating fish from time to time but most times I wasn’t. Again food going bad. Because on Monday fish sounded like a good idea but by Tuesday night I didn’t even want to look at it. So naturally I was just like fine just go vegetarian. But most vegetarian dishes that are easy to make are full of carbs. I started looking in to keto fast forward I’m here. What do I eat? Avocados made in a million ways Chia puddings A plethora of vegetables. Jack fruit Flaxseeds Nuts Berries Sunwarrior protein powder I make everything.

Sleeve vs Bypass concerns
Jaelzion replied to ht1976's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was exactly in your shoes two and a half years ago. I researched both surgeries and I had decided on the bypass because I read that bypass patients tend to lose more of their excess weight. But the bypass turned out to be medically contraindicated for me and I had to have the sleeve. Like you, I was never one to eat large volumes of food, so I wasn't sure the sleeve would be effective. But it was. I was one of the lucky ones who completely lost my appetite for the first year so it was possible for me to eat 600-800 calories a day for months. As my appetite slowly returned in year 2, my calories increased to 800-900. My weight loss slowed down but it continued and almost two years from my surgery date, I hit my goal of 130 pounds for a normal BMI. I continued losing and at this point my weight stays between 120 and 125. When I see it creep up to 127, I find myself immediately cutting back until I get it back down to under 122. It wasn't just the restriction of the sleeve that helped me lose. The surgery changed my relationship with food (I'm guessing due to the hormonal changes from having most of your stomach removed). Even today, my appetite is about 65% of what it was presurgery and I don't have unmanageable cravings. I still like sweets but I eat mostly sugar-free things like popsicles and pudding, yogurt, etc. Once in a while I'll have a treat of some kind, like cake or pie or Bailey's Irish Cream, but it's rare and it's always one treat and then back on plan. I feel like I still have the capacity to be a sugar/carb addict, so I'm careful with those foods. I also keep my carbs relatively low (although not keto-low) because that helps me maintain. So, statistically, bypassers do lose more on average. But your individual results can vary a lot. -
February 2019 weight loss buds
Sheribear68 replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey we are surgery twins! I also had my sleeve on February 6. I find that early in the day I can’t fit anything but water or milk into my sleeve, but as the day goes on, I’m able to hold more. By dinner time, I can hold up to a cup of food. I’m only eating a Keto diet because I simply can’t afford to fall down any kind of slippery slope. Tonite hubs and I have a date night planned and we’re going to one of my favorite sushi restaurants and I’ll have some miso soup and sashimi. Can’t wait -
I am finishing day 1 of liquid diet and it wasn’t so bad. I am kind of use to sugar free and artificially sweetners because I have done Keto on and off for awhile. I am to drink 3 shakes and 2 protein bars and unlimited broth, sugar free jello and popsicles. Oh and a boiled egg if needed. Why boiled egg I don’t know but I ate it! I haven’t felt deprived but I will prolly get bored soon. Just hoping the next 13 go by quickly! Good luck all!

Hi, Im new here, this is actually my first post. I have CHAMPVA as my only insurance. I am also confused by what they mean by doctor supervised weight loss. I tried weight watchers, 21 day fix, keto, etc.. Ive been to a nutritionist a few years ago, but I didn't go to the doctor very regularly for them to "supervise" So I am also worried about getting denied. May I also ask what surgery you had?

I don't know the Keto diet but when you say increase fats are you talking about avocados? Are there other fats that helped as well? I'm at a stall now. Only losing a pound or two a week. Top Recommendation from VGS people 6mos out or more
Miss Topaz replied to NatalieJoy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm a year and a half out. I would tell you to definitely use a tracking app (MyFitnessPal was mine) and a food scale. You'd be amazed how little or how much 2.5-3 ounces can be, depending on the food! Start small with portions and don't try to push yourself. Seriously, a quarter cup is not a lot of food, but at the beginning it will be! (that doesn't last, don't worry). YOu will find that some foods fill you up much more than others. I can eat a lot of salad greens. THat makes sense due to water. But ground beef vs chicken or eggs - big difference. Eggs and chicken fill me up faster. Get in your protein and take your vitamins. Vitamins are relatively easy and will make a huge difference in your health. Walk. YOu don't have to run marathons. Just walking will help. Re sweets. Don't keep them in the house if you can. I find that if I'm really craving something, getting something out, preferably splitting it, helps me. But, if it's something that's likely to cause you to binge or crave carbs later - don't do it. That is a bit different for all of us. After 6 months I started incorporating small amounts of carbs back into my diet. I find it helps me in the poo department. BIGGEST TIP! Use these sites for support and tips. However, this is YOUR journey. You, your situation and your physical and mental health history are different than everyone else. If someone tells you to go keto and it's just not something you can sustain - it's not for you. YOu have to find your own path. Don't compare yourself to others. Some lost faster than me, but they started out in a different place with a different body and issues. Find your way and don't give up! -
Had my rny on 5/16, no complications or issues. The first two weeks of recovery went great, and I went down 20 lbs pretty quickly. Unfortunately I ended up in the hospital after 2 days of vomiting and nausea with diabetic keto acidosis and dehydration. I was in the hospital for 2 days and it threw me off my recovery a little. Since then I’ve been trying to get back into walking every day again as I haven’t lost anything after the initial 20 lbs. I just had my first post-op appointment on Wednesday and spoke to the nurse practitioner about some lower abdominal pain that has remained since getting sick, and she suggested that I switch the brand of water I’m drinking to something less acidic. I feel lucky that I’m not having any bigger issues. I seem to be tolerating each new food without a problem and have no issues getting my protein and water in everyday, I’m just frustrated that the scale hasn’t moved in 2 weeks. ☹️

Weight regain...I don't know where to start.
mi75 replied to Ann Parde's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I have a very similar story, am 6 yrs post VSG. Had regain about 2 yrs out and it took getting some ugly medical news to get me back on track for good. I went strict keto, lost all the regain, lost about 20 more and am doing good. But it's always going to be a fight for me. I had to commit-LITERALLY, FINALLY- to giving up a lot of foods that I'll likely never eat again and that was a huge mourning process. I've been about 3 yrs strict Keto and love the lifestyle, but it's not for everyone. And it can be a challenge. yes we can have all that fat, but it's still really hard knowing I'll likely never eat most 'regular' foods again. Pre-surgery I had hoped I would be able to eat all things in small amounts again someday- but that got me on a slippery slope leading to the regain. So I have to stick to what works. I've found that when it comes to staying on track, I do great with total abstinence but really BAD at moderation.
