Forced to do Bypass
elcee replied to Christina.Rose's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Having any op is scary but when you have an experienced surgeon it shouldn’t be something you need to fear. Living with a bypass is fine. I feel like a perfectly normal person except I eat smaller portions and I’m now officially skinny! To me a bypass was far less scary than a sleeve and you already had that. You need to do everything you can to avoid cancer. -
Forced to do Bypass
JRT Mom replied to Christina.Rose's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I agree that the bypass sounds scary, but to me it's not as scary as having 80% of your stomach removed! It's theoretically reversible, and the mortality data for both the sleeve and bypass are comparable. But the risks and mortality of cancer is much higher, so I wouldn't hesitate to revise. It'll likely save your life! -
Forced to do Bypass

My wife's grandfather died from esophageal cancer and it was heartbreaking. Get the bypass. It's much, much better than cancer. I won't do VSG after hearing the GERD horror stories and bypass has been done for decades now. It's plenty safe, much more so than a cancer diagnosis. Plus I'm sure it will make you feel better immediately! That has to be worth something too! -
Forced to do Bypass

Sorry for the rough news but honestly the greater fear may be Cancer... Returning GERD or the sudden onset of GERD is a known risk of VSG. This revision surgery is about preventing a malicious disease from developing and improving your quality of life. Good Luck 💚 -
Did any of you keep your surgery a secret? I have! Please give input!

Last year when I was talking about it, I posted it publicly to friends and family. I got A LOT of kick back. Even to the point of losing a friend or two. (*shrugs* true colors showing) Fast forward to now, and I have the funds saved up to have the sleeve done. My husband and mother are the only ones in family who know. My co-workers know, because being with them 50 hours a week, they are an awesome support team. As far as friends, there is a select handful that I have told, only due to 2 of them actually having bypass/sleeve and them offering to mentor and help as needed. I was blindsided on how people are about the operation. It seemed like either they were 100% for it, or 100% not. Very few looked at the fact that its something for my health. I was blind sided by those who gave me so much grief for thinking about getting it done. Its an odd fine line. And if you come across those who you do tell and they are majorly supportive and helpful. Cling to them with major hugs. -
Forced to do Bypass

Wow, that's horrible about the cancer scare. I'm so sorry to hear it. I think you'll likely have a lot of success with the bypass because you did with the sleeve. -
Forced to do Bypass
Losingit2018 replied to Christina.Rose's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I just revised from sleeve to bypass 8 weeks ago. Like you I was afraid if the. Bypass. I got the sleeve early 2018 ended up with large hernia and gerd. now that I have the bypass, I am very happy with it. As long as you keep up with having bloodwork checked, take your vitamins and eat healthy, there is nothing to fear from the bypass. you have to do this or deal with cancer. There is no other option. Please make peace with it so that you can get healthy. You will be glad that you did it I once it is behind you. My only regret is that I did not start out with bypass and avoid having surgery twice. hang in there and come here for support. Please keep us updated as well. You got this. -
Forced to do Bypass

there are slightly more potential complications with the bypass, but complications on either surgery aren't common, and most are minor and easily "fixable". Many of us have never had any complications at all. It was the gold standard for a long time, and there's a ton of long-term research on it. Surgical techniques have improved greatly over the years, so problems they used to have years ago rarely occur anymore. As long as you're diligent about your vitamins (even moreso than with the sleeve), you'll likely be fine. A lot of people are afraid of it because they move your small intestine - but cutting out 80% of your stomach and throwing it in the trash is pretty radical, too. Since you have acid reflux, I would definitely go for it. Uncontrolled, severe reflux can be VERY dangerous. You're likely dealing with a more dangerous complication now than you would by getting a bypass. -
I have the sleeve. I had great success with it. However, I was having significant acid reflux. I went to my surgeon (I let it slide for a long time) Now I am being told that my acid is so bad that I am around 6mo out from cancer..... Barrett's esophagus. I'm really afraid of the bypass. I never wanted it. But she said if I don't get it, I am on the road to cancer. I have three lesions in my esophagus and I am inflamed. The example of the color of my esophagus was.... Healthy, the pink part of a nail bed....Me....USC MAROON. Also, after my endoscopy, my surgeon put me in to operate. That was a week before I spoke to her in person. She said it was better to book surgery and have me opt out. I'm scared. I know I need it. I wake up with my throat on fire, vomiting. Please, can someone help me make peace with the gastric bypass?? Has anyone had a gastric sleeve revision?
OutbackJo replied to OutbackJo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
What tests did they do and why did you choose the bypass? -
I've had several colonoscopies through the years--this is just the first after my RNY. I probably should call my bariatric surgeon's office to see if there is anything in the prep peculiar to bypass patients. Izucks, the prep sheet I have has the same directions as the one you posted.

There is a special prep that is less to drink that’s better for after gastric bypass surgery. I couldn’t use it since I’m allergic to it and mirilax. All I know is I had to do clear liquids three days prior, and the stuff I had to drink made me feel very sick. I started earlier so I had time to get it down. But I was much closer to post gastric bypass. It was a bit hellish and I had a upper endoscopy at the same time. ive had colonoscopies before but not quite as bad as that one was and honestly if my dr wants another I’m going to demand an alternative. Then not that long after, a few weeks or less, I had to clear out again for surgery. I had to drink magnesium citrate. Holy hell, I got shaking cold chills, instant intense pain and cramping after barely drinking part of the bottle. It’s not my intention to scare you. I’m sure it will go fine. ask the doctors office about the special prep with less liquid to drink, I’m sorry I can’t remember the name.

Has anyone had a gastric sleeve revision?
carlacv replied to OutbackJo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I got sleeved 2016 now have a hiatal hernia and acid reflux. Saw my doctor and after several tests will have gastric bypass in April 2020 -
I think it is possible to stretch it out. I had the sleeve... now granted I did have lots of stents put in to fix a leak, but I started to gain weight pretty quickly after everything had healed. I only lost weight because I was on TPN for 3 months and wasn't able to eat or drink anything. I had an endoscopy and the GI guy was shocked that I had lost any weight at all because there was little to no restriction. That's why I went on to have the Bypass. So... something definitely stretched out for whatever reason.

HELP 4 week optifast diet
ErrolFlynn replied to Celeste kimberly's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was totally craving food and finding it hard to follow my primarily liquid based diet before my bypass surgery. Interestingly enough, on about day 4, a switch clicked inside my body and I stopped feeling so hungry and having the cravings. Like Catwoman, my diet allowed sugar free jello and that was a delight for me. Also, I was allowed a 1 cup serving of a low sodium tomato and roasted red pepper soup, which I always ate for dinner and that was very satisfying. It gets better! I think you are on the edge point where your body adjusts to the diet and you are going to feel better! Hang in there for another day or 2 and you’ll see! -

Welcome to the forums, Maureen2u! Your story is great. It's amazing how the bypass mostly stops diabetes in its tracks, isn't it? -
I had a bypass and returned to work two weeks after surgery. It was a 10 hour shift and I was EXHAUSTED. Take as long as you can!

3rd times a charm!
bikerchick519 replied to HollyHeight's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was told $6900 for the revision but Dr. took $500 off since I was coming back to him. He was supposed to have Dr. Illan do my mgb but he had an emergency that day and another Dr. stepped in to do my surgery. But this time I'm going to Dr. Illan. His patients really seem to love him and his staff is amazing to work with. -
Has anyone had a gastric sleeve revision?
bikerchick519 replied to OutbackJo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had the sleeve in 2011 and then got horrible acid reflux and the sleeve was stretched some. My insurance wouldn't pay for the revision to bypass so I got the mini gastric bypass but I'm one of the ones that didn't get rid of the reflux with that so now the reflux is even worse and insurance still won't pay to fix it so I'm going back to Mexico for my 3rd wls. I'm really not happy about that but I need the reflux gone! What I can tell you about a revision, for me anyway, after the sleeve I felt no pain and went back to work in a week. After the mgb I was sore and exhausted. I went back to work after 2 weeks but I was so tired. And the weight loss is a little slower than the first time. -
Hi, I've been struggling in my adult life with my weight since the birth of my only child. I had the lapband done, which was a waste of money, it did nothing for me. My new doctor only recommended the bypass because he didn't want to set me up for any failures. I was nervous and scared but I did it a year ago and I don't regret it. I lost over 80 pounds (I could have lost more if stayed on track) and still losing.

Has anyone had a gastric sleeve revision?
catwoman7 replied to OutbackJo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
complications aren't that common, and most are minor and easily "fixable". For example, strictures - those are one of the more common complications, yet they only happen to about 5% of bypass patients, if that tells you anything. Really serious complications - like bowel obstructions - are really rare. A lot of us (probably most) have never had any complications at all. If that's what your surgeon is recommending given your health status, I'd seriously consider that and not worry too much about potential complications, which aren't likely to happen in the first place. It sounds like you're already dealing with a lot of issues from previous surgeries. If this will help with that, it'd be worth considering.... -

You have a few options as a revision but only a surgeon can direct you after testing A reminder: This will be your 3rd WLS, if given the choice IMHO i would choose the most permanent one (DS/SIPS) -
