    Question of lower BMI patients

I am 153 cm and weighed 74kg in 2009 when I got my band. I got down to approx 50kg, slowly regained and sat in the mid 50s for a while and then the weight snowballed rapidly. I had a revision to RNY last January at a weight of 66 kg. I am now down to between 48.8 and 49.5 and maintaining fairly easily.

sleeve to rny for weight loss?

depends on the insurance. Most will not pay for a revision unless it's medically necessary (e.g., severe GERD, mechanical failure of the original surgery) - although even then some companies will only pay for one surgery per lifetime. You can always call them and ask, though - you never know. if your sleeve is still working, though, you can still lose the weight. You just have to go back to the way you were eating that first year (not necessarily all the way back to protein shakes, but the whole protein first, then non-starchy vegetable thing. Tracking your food. Weighing/measuring things instead of eyeballing portion size. Etc. It usually takes longer the second time around, but people have done it...
  3. Hey there--- I had the gastric sleeve 5 years ago. My life has been a whirlwind of change since--- Good change, but nevertheless hard! long story short-- left an abusive marriage, lost my job, autistic child, etc At any rate, I only lost about 80 pounds from the sleeve surgery initially. Since then I have put about 50 back on. I have spent the last 3 years being mad at myself for being a failure. I met with the surgeon a year ago and he told me no way would he revise my sleeve to a bypass because I wasn't following the protocol. I left there hysterical. I still have about 200 pounds to lose and numerous comorbidities. I am active, walk 7+miles 3 x a week and do yoga 2x a week. I guess my question is, Has anyone had a similar experience? Will insurance pay for another surgery? I am not sure what else to do at this point!

How do you know if you stretched your sleeve

100% agree. When i had my band i never went in for "unfills"... i just adjusted my portion sizes... I learned valuable lessons in all those years and i truly believe it's why even after my band removal and being without i gained only 30lbs..... That being said, it still was 30lbs and on someone 5'2".. it's not a good look. I went from 143 to 173.5 in 2.5 years..... Did i look terrible...No, Did i feel terrible... YES... I felt like a failure even though i didn't have any tool I thought i should have been able to control my eating better. I quickly was reminded what "hunger" felt like again. With the band, i was never hungry. I didn't have to have the sleeve done and in any other situation, i would not have even qualified for it. But because i had had the band my dr did it as a revision (2.5 years later). And because i was lucky enough to have 14k in my bank account. I worry about the pouch stretching.... this is why i portion everything... and If i'm still hungry.. too bad, i just go hungry. As of today i at 135.... SX 8/28/19 Feeling like my old self again.... all my clothes that were too tight now either fit or are to big.... whoop whoop.
  5. Mexicali Bariatric Center is the only place I’d consider for revision surgery (VSG to RNY). Good luck! http://www.mexicalibariatric.com/

MINI GASTRIC BYPASS AND ACID REFLUX

Wow! I had no idea one could have a Nissen after an MGB. I had a Nissen and they took it down to do my MGB. I haven't really had any issues since but I've prepared myself for the potential of bile reflux. I thought a revision to full gastric bypass was the only option. I'm glad to hear this. I didn't know a Nissen would be effective for bile reflux since it creates tension at the esophagus and bile needs to be stopped before it enters the stomach. Thank you for the info. Can you share which doctor did it?
  8. A lot depends on your height especially your goal weight but your protein intake changes based on weight loss and activity. Baseline recommend protein would be 0.8 grams of protein per Kg of body weight which I believe is 0.36 grams per lb of body weight. This would put you at around 67 grams of protein per day. Stalls can be for several reasons. Protein (too much or to little) Calories (too much or too little’ , types of foods, or just a natural stall that will pass. My longest stall was two weeks as well but I can go even a week before losing. Slower now as I get closer to goal. my starting weight was technically “low” at around 208lbs but I’m also only 5’ height and was 40.3 BMI. It seems strange for the surgeon to just outright say you are already done losing weight and need to exercise to lose more. To be honest besides metabolic disorders, one huge reason I had gastric bypass surgery was the fact I cannot exercise due to chronic illness. In all reality exercise isn’t for weight loss. building muscle helps because muscle burns more calories than fat. I guess just have patience, and set your own goal outside of what the surgeon expects of you.
  9. I had gastric bypass on Jan 15. At first I was only able to get in a few sips of water/liquid at a time. Now it seems that I can drink a lot more before getting that full feeling. Is this normal?

How do you know if you stretched your sleeve

I definitely stretched mine - I lost 100 lbs but gained back over 50 lbs through poor eating habits. You have to be vigilant - just because your stomach can handle more food, doesn't mean it should. Go back to eating smaller portions and watch how many calories you are eating. Another reason why I failed is that I stopped tracking as diligently as I had before. So even though I've tried to "re-set" my sleeve, nothing has worked, and I'll be going for a revision to gastric bypass in about a month's time.

    Surgery in Monterrey mexico

Thanks for the great info! Good luck with your revision surgery! 😊 FYI - I had a LINX Reflux Management device implanted in March 2015, so a couple of years before MGB surgery (April 2017); it helped for 18 months and then acid reflux returned in Oct 2016. As part of my July 2018 abdominal surgery to resolve bile reflux, I also had the LINX device removed since it wasn’t useful and even more importantly, because the one I had was recalled by the FDA in April 2018. I have a family history of esophageal cancer so minimizing/eliminating GERD is paramount to my long term health. Thankfully, I’m doing very well now. 👏

    Gastric Bypass for Senior Citizen

I just had gastric bypass on the 15th of January, am 68 and so far it has been great!
  13. Some history: I am a 29-year-old American woman living in Denmark on a residency permit with my husband and his kids. We tried to get pregnant for a while, but after many failed attempts, we decided to bring our concerns to an OB/GYN. I was diagnosed with PCOS and was asked to lose quite a bit of weight before they would help via fertility treatments. It has been a struggle to get any assistance at all in regards to PCOS related symptoms because of my weight, never mind the fertility issues that come along with it. I decided to go for bariatric surgery, as recommended by my GP. Meetings held & requirements so far: A week prior to my meetings, I was required to get an EKG and blood test done. 12/09/2019 (141kg / 310lbs) - I had my first meeting with one of the doctors at the diabetes center. It was basically just the start of a medical journal. He got my starting weight, illnesses, medication, and allergies. I was told that I need to lose 8% of my current weight, which would put me at 129kg / 284lbs. He told me that it looked like I would be offered surgery since I met the requirements (a BMI over 35 with concurrent related diseases, which, for me, is PCOS, sleep apnea, and a history of hypertension), but I would find out on my next visit. The day before I left on vacation (12/17/2019), I weighed 136kg / 299lbs! While I had a great time visiting family, I ate way too much unhealthy food and shot back up to 142kg / 313lbs when I returned home (01/09/2020). Yikes! 😩 I managed to get the weight back off before my next visit though! 01/15/2020 (135kg /297lbs) - This was my second meeting, but this time it was with a senior doctor. He described the pros and cons of each option for surgery. Due to me having a history of occasional acid reflux and heartburn, he suggested that I go with the bypass surgery. However, he told me that I could choose for myself. I have decided to stick with what he recommended. By the end of the conversation, he offered me the surgery (as I figured at this point 😂) and set up an appointment for me to see a dietitian. He also said that my EKG and blood tests came back normal. Within two weeks of the previous meeting, I had to send in a stool sample. Upcoming meetings: 02/18/2020 - My first appointment with a dietitian. 03/06/2020 - Normally, I would be required to attend a patient seminar with other overweight people prior to surgery, but because I do not speak fluent Danish, I will have to participate in a 1-on-1 meeting with the details of how the operation takes place, how to prepare, and how to eat/live after the operation. This is a plus to me, as I am normally uncomfortable in large groups of people. As of today (01/26/2020), I weigh 133kg / 293lbs! With this current rate of weight loss, I imagine I will have met my goal weight for surgery by the time I have my first visit with the dietitian. This both delights and worries me, as I am not sure how they will take this information. I was told during the meeting with the senior doctor, that once I lost the weight, I would simply call up the clinic to tell them and I would get my surgery date some days later via email. However, the emails I received from the clinic prior to these meetings thus far have confused me, as they don't seem to suggest the same thing. Here's the list of requirements that I am still supposed to meet besides the upcoming appointments I have listed above: Lose at least 8%-12% of what I weighed the first time I visited the clinic and maintain that weight loss until the day of surgery. I need to have regular conversations (via meetings with a dietitian at the clinic or telephone) with approx. 4 week intervals to discuss: Agreements and goals for progress and weight loss Dietary changes Exercise Smoking and drinking alcohol Medical diseases Then, it says: after 3-6 months, I am to have a status interview and then a team of specialists will assess whether I can be offered an operation. 🤔 I guess what I am confused about is that I thought I was already offered the operation, but just needed to lose the required weight before I could get a date! Furthermore, if I lose the weight before my first meeting with the dietitian, would I really need to have so many more meetings after that? Eh, I guess I will make that phone call once I reach my goal weight to find out where I go from there. I am hoping it's as easy as the senior doctor said it would be during our meeting! Anyways, that's enough from me for now. I'm Steph! I recently joined the FB group and ended up finding my way onto the website. I look forward to writing with you all more in the future! Good luck, everyone! If anyone else has experienced a similar situation in the Scandinavian countries, I would love to hear what clarification you guys had gotten! And sorry if I sound totally spoiled -- I know the US insurance companies require a lot more in order to cover the operation! 🙈
  14. I hope you're getting bypass that's really the best surgery to change your metabolism and your set point plus the gut biome. Okay I went from eating so much junk all day everyday probably as much as 5000cal a day now 3 months post RNY I'll eat max 750cal and rarely even hungry I'm like a new person; I'm definitely not going into the fridge every hour like I used to.. You've done well to lose 60lbs and your surgery is coming up quick so you'll be fine. My honest experience is if I'm hungry I'll have high protein shake and that will fix my hunger but it's the bad carbs that cause insulin spike and hunger... I may be an anomaly but I lost 66lbs before my RNY and I've lost 66lbs since And I'm like 10lbs from my end goal too

    Left Shoulder Pain after eating

I've had a gastric bypass after sleeve surgery on the 16th of January cause my stomach from sleeve kept getting lodged in the hiatel hernia that now has been repaired 3 times. My surgeon suggested getting bypass to prevent this from occurring again. But 3 days now I've been having that same pain in left shoulder area up to side of neck on left side when eating certain foods. I tried the soft blended egg no problem but I tried other blended food even a fruit smoothie and the pain comes again. Not with everything I eat or drink just certain foods. I tried soft blended grits no problem. But I have to stop eating rare back in chair sit for awhile and not eat. Then it passes. So I googled that symptom with bypass surgery and it says a anastomotic leakage. So now I will call my doctor or hospital in morning to see what to do
  16. I had an appointment to try to get approval for a sleeve to bypass revision, but I canceled it. This thread, and some other stuff I heard about gastric bypass, was freaking me out.
  17. I have been having pain in left shoulder area these last 3 days since bypass surgery so I googled that symptom and it says a anastomotic leakage. But it doesn't hurt every time I eat or with everything I eat. It is just some food. I ate a blended egg and ate no pain at all. But I tried other blended food and it hurts when I eat. So I have to stop eating rare back in my chair and relax and it stops. The pain goes up to left side of neck from left shoulder area
  18. I had surgery January 16th for hiatel hernia closure and at same time my gastric sleeve surgery was converted to the bypass cause my stomach kept getting lodged in the hernia. I have the symptoms of an anastomotic leakage, pain in left shoulder area off and on while eating and have to stop eating rare back in seat until it stops. For last 3 days it's done this while eating. So I googled that question and it said an anastomotic leakage is what this symptom comes from.
  19. I'll be getting my sleeve to bypass revision in March as well (March 3rd), but I'll be getting it done in Europe. Even though I had a successful surgery with my sleeve in Tijuana a few years ago, overall I was not impressed with the whole experience, so decided to try elsewhere (I live in Japan so a big overseas trip is a necessity for me no matter what). What's interesting to me is that the pre- and post-op diet recommendations are vastly different than to what I'm used to, so we'll see how that goes.

    Surgery in Monterrey mexico

I had a tummy tuck, breast lift and implants, face lift with eyelids, some lipo and fat transfer to my face. My scars look great, belly button looks amazing. Essentials for the hotel, lap top for Netflix, a couple maxi dresses and a robe. you mostly live in the garment but it's nice to cover up with a robe and wear a maxi dress if you go to the HEB or a restaurant. Dr. Illan is doing my RNY. The doctor here in the states said he consulted surgeons across the country and internationally and they all said Nissen Fundoplication and the Lynx weren't really an option for me and Dr. Illan agreed I should get the full bypass. I had the sleeve and had horrible acid reflux that the mgb didn't fix so I'm praying this bypass fixes it. I won't have any other options after this. You will love Dr. Sauceda. He and Patty are amazing.

    Weight Loss on Pre-Op Diet

Yes, it's normal (although everyone is different). I also find that the heavier a person is, the more they lose on these types of diets. I've noticed this not only on sites like this, but also when I was a part of weight watchers. People who were morbidly obese had very large drops of weight on any kind of restricted diet (10 pound or more a week), where as that would be both unusual and alarming for anyone who was within a normal BMI range. The first time I did this I lost 21 pounds in 21 days during my pre-op diet (of course it was not one pound a day, it stalled and dropped over 3-5 days usually, but the end result was this). I'll be starting my pre-op for my revision surgery in February, so hopefully I can get similar numbers.

    Nausea vomiting one year out

I was not aware that a revision from sleeve to bypass was open and not laproscopic.
  24. I had MGB in TJ in April 2017 and it resolved my acid reflux, which was very severe pre-op. Life was great, lost a lot of weight, but 10 months post-bypass I developed bile reflux. I knew it was this because I would throw up greenish-yellow liquid, and then it was confirmed via EGD, along with Barrett’s Esophagus. My gastroenterologist and PCP were unfamiliar with bile reflux and did not know how to treat it, no medicines they recommended helped, but I found a great out-of-state bariatric surgeon (who also specializes in complex revisions) who was able to treat me. In July 2018, he repaired a hiatal hernia and performed a Nissen Fundoplication on me and since then I’ve had zero acid or bile reflux issues, which have been confirmed via EGD (2 of them post-op). He considered revising me to RNY but during surgery he was able to do some magic so that I didn’t need that extra procedure. And as the final step in my weight loss journey, I’m scheduled for plastic surgery in mid-Feb 2020.

    Surgery in Monterrey mexico

I’m having plastic surgery with Dr. Sauceda in mid-Feb 2020. What surgery did you have done with him and when, and how do your scars look today? Are they jagged, thick, good belly button, etc? And what kind of stuff do you think I should bring with me; what’s essential for recovery at the Hampton Inn? And your profile says you’re having a revision from MGB to RNY in less than 2 weeks. Do you mind sharing why and who is going to do the surgery? I had an MGB in TJ in April 2017; acid reflux was improved but then I developed bile reflux, so in July 2018 I had a hernia repair and Nissen Fundoplication (in the U.S.) and I am doing great now; no more reflux of either kind.
