  1. is there someone with mini gastric bypass? i live in germany and will soon live in the usa. I have one capsule per day in Germany that contains all the vitamins you need in a day. Is there such a thing in the usa?
  2. Hi , I’m new on the forum but I had a gastric bypass on 1/29/20 and only told my husband and my mother. I have a circle of friends that just won’t understand and a bunch of family members that will treat me like I didn’t earn my weight loss and I don’t want to deal with any of that so I’m keeping it secret. Clusie has a great super funny video on YouTube on lies you can tell to help keep surgery a secret. I found her videos super helpful.

    Forced to do Bypass

Yeah they don't actually chop or remove any intestines they bypass some of it. So the channel from your stomach to your lower intestines is different that's all...

    Forced to do Bypass

According to my surgeon, despite there being a few more “connections” involved, the bypass is not that dissimilar from the sleeve procedure. The amount of time in surgery is the same, the risks are the same, the recovery time is the same etc. I just went through the bypass on 12/2. Speaking for myself, I had really bad GERD prior to surgery and absolutely none since!

    February Surgery ?

I'm scheduled for the 19th also! Are you having the bypass or sleeve done? I'm having the bypass.

    Forced to do Bypass

I had bypass in Nov 2015 and haven’t had a single complication at all. I’ve maintained over 140 lbs of weight loss and it was the best decision I’ve made.

What are you afraid of with gastric bypass?

    Smoothie Options

I'm really trying to find out how to work veggies into smoothies, or juice extracts etc. Not looking for calorie info.... just looking for veggies that can be camouflaged in a smoothie/juice. I HATE spinach, kale....meh....so I find it very hard to believe that I can erase the gross flavor while still getting vitamins.... not talking about the pills, chews, powders etc....I'm stuck with getting a bypass. My sleeve worked great until Barrett's esophagus was on the possible side effects list for me. Just wanted to hear input on veggies....duh, carrots, got it....that can round out a nutritious smoothie. Once again.... not asking for anything synthetic...got that....not asking about calorie intake. Thanks! Sent from my moto e5 supra using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. I had my gallbladder removed during my surgery but it wasn’t the deciding factor for what type of surgery I had. I had gastric bypass surgery due to severe gastric reflux (GERD) I had a HIDA scan that showed low gallbladder function and honestly was suggested possible removal when I first decided to finally pursue bariatric surgery. Since they are similar recovery for both surgeries. I wasn’t sure either would happen. When I finally got a great Bariatric surgeon he wasn’t sure if he would remove my gallbladder during the procedure, he said if it was too risky he wouldn’t. But thankfully he did because it turned out to be severe chronic inflammation of my gallbladder. Which I feel contributed to my weight problems (not to mention metabolic disorders and other medical conditions) my personal opinion is, if the doctor says your gallbladder is bad and they can remove it during your surgery then best to do that. because there is a high rate of gallbladder problems after rapid weight loss. I'm glad to have had gastric bypass surgery as an option for the added tool it offers of “malabsorption “ and that it benefitted me since I had severe GERD.

    Gastric band repair advice

You can get a band replaced or repaired but most people that have this done do not find it as effective as when they were banded initially. It is now believed that the safe useful lifespan of a band is between 10 -15 years. They are not the damage free option that they were once thought to be and have fallen massively out of favour. Some exbandsters get revised to a sleeve but this has its own set of issues that can be exacerbated by having had a band previously. The revision of choice is generally to a Roux en Y gastric bypass. That sounds horribly scary until you do more research . I had my revision in Jan 2018 and couldn’t be happier. To me the rny does what the band was marketed as being able to do but never really did. I eat small portions of healthy food and am satisfied. No more being stuck, no more nights out wasted in the bathroom because my first bite of food got stuck. No more horrible feeling of pressure in the chest, when I’m full I feel it like a “normal” person would

Rapid weight loss and body hardware

I don’t have hardware but I have had a failed back surgery. I am bone on bone at L3/L4 i had a severe increase in pain at that area post bypass. They hang you upside down on a table during surgery. My surgery was 5.5 hours long. I am thinking that is what aggravated my back. I can’t normally even lay flat on my back while conscious. My pain is getting better each week I get out from surgery. I hope that the same happens for you.
  13. Anyone else out there have permanent equipment in their body? Screws, rods, etc? I had bypass 1/27 and with preop diet and surgery I’ve lost 31# since Dec 26. This morning I woke up and the titanium rod I have in my back was sore- much like when I first got it. It’s been sore all day! I’m going to mention it at my 1 week check up Tues but I thought I’d ask here if anyone has had similar pain. It’s almost like it’s moved and scar tissue hasn’t formed around it ... anyway, just checking....
  14. I started seeing my primary doctor to track weight loss (for insurance) in September and met with my surgeon for the first time on Wednesday (1/29) we discussed my options and he told me that he would have some tests ran but that it was my choice on which surgery I chose to have unless my test results suggested otherwise....he scheduled my tests for Friday (1/31) And during my gallbladder ultrasound the ultrasound tech asked me if I was in any pain and when I said no she said “that’s weird because your gallbladder is pretty nasty” I asked what she meant and she said that I had some stones and lots of polyps but not to worry bc the surgeon would just remove it during surgery....has anyone else had this happen? Did it sway yours or your surgeons decision to have the bypass or the sleeve?
  15. My surgeon recommended either the bypass or the duodenal switch. I take a strong NSAID that I will probably continue to have to take despite significant weight loss. He said with a failed lap band he didn’t recommend the sleeve. I am thinking about the sleeve because the switch is a more serious operation.
  16. the sleeve is actually the first part of a duodenal switch. They do a VSG on your stomach and then bypass a large part of your small intestine. They used to do the DS in two stages - starting with the VSG and later adding the intestinal bypass - and then they started offering VSG as a standalone surgery when they realized some people could lose all the weight they wanted with just the VSG. The DS is not like the RNY at all - that's a stomach bypass (although a few inches of the small intestine is bypass - a foot or so - much less than in the DS), whereas the DS is an intestinal bypass (with a VSG stomach). I'm not sure what to tell you. The DS is a much stronger surgery, so it'll be easier to lose weight and keep it off, but on the flip side, there is also a greater potential for complications with it (moreso than the RNY, too). You have to be REALLY diligent about taking vitamins for the rest of your life, or you can get really sick really quickly. Also, a lot of doctors these days know how to deal with RNY and VSG patients because there are so many of us out there, but many aren't really familiar with DS, so you may need to be more of an advocate for yourself (and may even have to explain your anatomy to them). I would have considered a DS if my insurance would have covered it (they wouldn't) because I had over 200 lbs to lose, but with 100-ish lbs, I'm not sure. Although I did have a friend who had it who was 100 lbs overweight pre-surgery, and she's been very happy with it.
  17. Got my surgery date of 2/10. Was so nervous I cried. My hubby is being very supportive .. Told him to be ready top be me for a few days. Trying to get my leave from work done was told I couldn't come back tol after post op with my fitness for duty report. Hoping all goes as planned. Sent from my SM-J737A using BariatricPal mobile app

    Molina Healthcare/ Washington Apple Health

The schedule is controlled by the insurance company. I live in a rural area and my doctor/hospital is 2 hours away in another state. They allowed me to attend support groups that were local and scheduled all my medical appointments on the same days (pulmonologist, Endocrinologist, surgeon, dieticians etc. the time frame for mine was 1 year...they were not flexible about that at all. I had my Bypass on 12/11/19 and finally feeling normal. I have not had insulin since the day of surgery.

    Gastric band repair advice

How long have you been banded? It might be time to consider a revision to something like RNY
  21. I had cold symptoms when I had my bypass. The doctor said as long as I wasn't running a fever and my lungs were clear he'd do the procedure and it turned out fine! Good luck!

    January 2020 Surgery Date

So sorry you had complications. I really do know how you feel and want to encourage you not to be discouraged. If they’re keeping you in hospital it’s for the best. Many of us rush to get home after surgery but my daughter was in hospital 3 nights after gastric bypass and for 9 months post op she was sick with vomiting, kidney stones and eventually a complete bowel obstruction that required surgery. Please try to relax and know that if they’re keeping you longer than you expected, it means you need to be there. Better to spend one week in hospital than spend 9 months miserable and back in the hospital. Peaceful thoughts to you.

    Possible Revision

I'm not a revision patient, but yes - I've heard of people that developed GERD months - or even a couple years - after sleeve surgery.

    Possible Revision

I had my Conversion from sleeve to Bypass 1/8/2020. So far I’ve done good. Same exact resin you’re stating. No more GERD.

    Possible Revision

May I ask, for those who’ve had to revise due to GERD... was that obvious directly following sleeve surgery, or did it take months or years to manifest? I’m curious because while I had acid reflux from time to time at my heaviest I haven’t experienced much that the occasional Tums can’t sort, in the six months since getting sleeved. Curious if it’s something that comes later. Thanks!
