Surgery Tomorrow- Keep me in your thoughts
Matt S replied to speck's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Good luck, I had my surgery yesterday. I stayed overnight in the hospital. Everything went great. I really have not had much pain. I took pain meds twice in the hospital and now taking tylenol ES. I didn't even take any in recovery. The recovery room said everyone is different some pain some not. I may have just got lucky or have a high pain tolerance I'm not sure which. Don't be too nervous its probably not worth it. I spent an entire week obscessing about it. Now i regret that to a certain degree. -
I have had the band almost 2 years, and during the last three months (for the first time ever) when my period starts my band completely closes up! I mean for a couple of days I can barely get hot liquid down. The first two months I went in for an unfill and had immediate relief, but it was really frustrating because I was then too loose and eating too much. :/ This last episode I could tell was not quite as bad, I called my doc's office and they advised that it unfortunately does happen (why all of a sudden I wonder?) and that relaxing about it helps you get through it. Well, I did just that and it has slowly, slowly, slowly gotten better...I was so excited to get some thin mashed potatoes and a protein drink (room temp) down today. I was feeling really weak, and with three babies to keep up with (8, 4 & 2) I need my energy! Does anyone out there have suggestions, tricks or tips? Is there something I can do the week before I am supposed to start to make it not happen? I, for the most part, have been a bandster who eats lots of salad and protein and the occasional "naughty" treat...so I am hoping my stomach will heal and I'll be able to get back to the healthy eating soon. Thanks so much for any help you can offer! :confused2:

How's it going? I'm doing well. I stay at one spot for a couple weeks then lose 10 lbs quickly. I'm still working on being under 200 by my 28th birthday on May 23rd. I hope everyone is doing great!

Two weeks out and feeling pretty good!!
Locomotive Engineer posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hey Guys and Gals, I'm two weeks out now (banded on 12/04) and I'm feeling pretty good!!! I still have two weeks to go on clear liquids and protein drinks and then I can start some soft foods. I will be real glad when I can have the soft foods but it really isn't too bad now as far as hunger goes. The first week was pure hell and now it has just been a mind set with me as far as my hunger goes. I just figure that it's what my doctor wants me to do and he's the expert. The GREAT part is that from the start of my pre-op diet until now, I've lost 55 LBS!!! I'm stoked!!! Here is wishing everyone gods blessings and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! Spike. -
 I had my first fill last week, everything went fine, but this week my port is hurting, it's painful, it feels like it might have moved, it's sticking out a little bit. Is this normal, could it be that it came lose or that it is just still sore from the fill? I'm kinda concerned about it. If it did come lose what will they have to do?? Thank you worried Bobbie:ohmy:

I have been battling anemia since my intake exam. It has become a problem for me. They said that if I am still anemic before surgery they won't do it. My surgeon though, ALSO asked me to lose 20 pounds (which I did.) Then the nutritionist asked me to lose 10 more pounds (Which I did. ) The anemia is worse than EVER. And they want me to go on a liquid fast for two weeks before surgery. How is that going to solve my anemia? I feel caught between a rock and a hard place. I am trying to eat Iron rich foods. I have been taking a one a day plus iron. Eating total Cereal for Breakfast and three ounces of red meat at dinner, while still keeping it to the 1200 calorie limit I've been set at. But I'm still anemic. And on nov 3 I am stupposed to start a liquid fast to shrink my liver. I expect my rbc to go downhill from there unless I cure myself real good. Any ideas? I'm so frustrated. It's like starving myself while curing a chronic problem. It's way too hard. I am doing all the nutritionist said and even she's at a loss. How long does it normally take to cure anemia? I'm getting so discouraged. Does anyone know what I can do , especially during a liquid only phase of the pre op diet, to cure myself of chronic anemia? I am taking the one-a-day plus iron pill. Should I go buy extra iron tablets and kind of take a bunch of them each day or something? I am so frustrated and I really don't know what to do. My nutritionist gve up and said ask the pcp. My pcp just shrugged and asked abut my periods. No magic shot in the arm to take it away or anything. I still feel like this is going to jeapordize getting the surgery. I've tried so hard to lose all the weight and do everythng they said. I hate to not get the surgery after all this. can you help me?

Hi thats great i also was on a cruise 2 weeks ago but i put on 2lb and i thought i did well [lol] but i lost it again last week, well done you

Reeneea, I agree with Heathergurl. Take the warm sips and call your Dr. if you can't get a good amount of fluid in... I was really swollen after banding, if fact after surgery for a few days, all of my liquids would go "gurgle, gurgle" when they came down. The gas (shoulder pain and all) is the worse part, I had it for around a week. Each day, it should get better. Also, try a heating pad. Congrat!! Let us know, how you're doing. Shawn

Do any of you go to support groups? I went to one last week and it was a "newbie" class (2 - 12 weeks post-op only). It was basically just questions and answers. The down side was that out of 24 patients there, only 2 were bandsters - the rest were gastric. I felt a little bad at first because the gastric people had lost such GINORMOUS amounts of weight already. But the leader reminded me that you cannot compare the 2 surgeries, and I knew that - but it was hard. They are supposed to start up a bandster group in the near future. I hope they do because I could definately see a difference in the questions being asked. Just wondering if anyone else goes to support groups and what they think of them.

Yes, I went in for my op last fri and the nurse told me that once the restricted diet was over I would be starving as my band was not filled yet. As for lossing weight on the pre op and post op diet......... WEll, yeh, like I haven't eaten proberly in nearly 3 weeks. on clear fluids right now, the weight is dropping off me but I fully expect to put some on when I can eat more. I've not had the band fitted to loss 25 llbs a month I want steady eddie! that way it should hopefully stay off! Jx

Hope you'll be getting a fill very soon....you are in the most difficult phase of your wls right now. You have a tool, but it's not yet operational. Therefore you have to use a little willpower and self-restraint until you get good restriction. It may take more than one fill....or two....or three.... everyone is different. Until you get good restriction, you'll do yourself a favor by going ahead and getting in your 64 oz Water/day AND your protein - Protein powder supplements are the low cal/low carb way to get in the 80-100 grams/day that you need. Find some you love and use them! If you'll cut out all white carbs (rice, Pasta, potatoes, white bread), you won't suffer from cravings so much.....that helps you stay in control much better. Don't be depressed....you're going to do fine! We all start this journey with the fear that "I'll be the one person on earth that this doesn't work for." But it will work....it gets easier. Best wishes!

Thought I'd share my miserable story of a lesson learned - I got my band in November of 06 and it took about 3-4 months for fills to start having an effect. Two weeks ago I had an adjustment to 6.5cc's - This seems to be my sweet spot. Went to Jackson Hole ( a great burger joint) in Bayside, Queens on Sunday, and kinda forgot about my band... HUGE mistake, as a chunk of burger got stuck... bad. I proceeded to PB in the restaurant bahroom twice, then on the ride home on the Clearview, TNB, 95 and the Hutch before the chunk got unstuck. What a horrible, horrible experience, but lesson learned. So far I've lost 70 pounds and feel great, but must re-concentrate on not just how much I eat, but what I'm eating. Well, that's my story... food for thought! :biggrin1: André

Starting phase two of liquid diet. I get to eat tomato soup and other cream soups today. I found butternut squash soup, low sodium tomato, and I made some thinned out pureed pinto beans, too. I can barely eat a cup of thinned out soup and I am full which I wasn't really expecting. I figured it would go right through. Next week: cream of wheat and soft scrambled eggs!

Hey! You're getting banded the same days as me. I also have a pre-op diet but it's only for 1 week, not two. I definitely get what you mean by emotions being all over the place. It's very exciting but defniitely nerve-wracking too.

I created a survey of questions related to lap band surgery. I would like for those of you who have had lap band surgery and are at least 3 to 6 months post surgery to take this survey. The survey is completely anonomous. It is limited to 100 entries, so I will share the results after 100 people have taken the survey or a week from now, whichever is sooner. This is just a survey to help me better understand how people feel about their decision to be banded. There are only 9 questions and they are: 1. How tall are you? 2. What was your weight pre-banding? 3. What is your current weight? 4. Select which type of diet you follow: 5. Exercise 6. How much total weight did you lose from the day of banding until (sorry these may not appear in order): 7. If you could do it all over again, would you get banded? 8. Please select which best suits you: 9. Do you wish you had selected a different weight loss surgery? Please answer these questions via the survey. Please only take the survey only once. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=678442574739 P.S. I'm a newbie to this survey thing so I'm praying this works :nervous (but actually its a pretty cool website to create your own surveys (surveymonkey.com)

I’m a year and a three months out of gastric sleeve surgery. I have excess skin on my stomach, arms, and thighs. My doctor told me if I get to my goal I can get it removed but I’ve been so unmotivated because of the excess skin. I feel like I put all this work into losing and now I still look terrible. I know this journey is for our health but I can’t even focus on that. I’ve been eating way too much because I can’t find the motivation to refocus when I know I still look bad on the outside. Anyone else feel like this? What did you do?

How soon after surgery did you start running? I am only 5 weeks post op, but ran prior to surgery and am missing it. Hoping to be able to run soon.

So I have been speed walking three miles a day for the past few weeks. Today I decided to jog. It was not hard and I could do it just fine unlike before. HOWEVER my loose skin and the fat left in my stomach and thighs is bouncing so bad if feels like a weight pulling me down. Is there anything that you can recommend to stop this from happening? Thank you!

I have heard many times before in my pre-band diet life that you shouldn't eat under 1200 calories a day because it throws your body into "starvation" mode and you start storing all your calories. Now, I've seen a lot people on here eating quite a bit less, and most days I eat a lot less. However, I haven't really lost weight in the past few weeks. Should I be trying to get in more calories? I get all my protein in.

First Fill - First Fill, is this what its supposed to feel like?
mm1315 posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi all! I had my first fill last week. I have noticed a difference but really didn't day of. I was on liquids for 24 hours and then on mushy foods for 24 hours and then I was able to eat normally. I really didn't know what to expect after my first fill and its not what I thought. The first day back on real foods I was still eating softer foods and ate over a cup. I was able to do so but it made me extremely uncomfortable (heartburn and gassy). Since then I have been making sure to eat no more than 1 cup of food per sitting. I have had an issue of feeling stuck when ] I made tuna and tried to eat it on toasted bread (I had read somewhere that is the bread was toasted you would be able to eat it) and it was very clear after one bite that was not the case. I can take a small bite of bread but that's about it. Other than that I have been able to eat everything I have tried so far, I have just been trying to make good decisions about what that is. I could eat more than that cup but I realize that if I stop there and don't eat anymore I am full for prob 4 to 5 hours or so. So my question is does this sound right? I know everyone is different but even though the band is not exactly what I expected I am excited that it is helping me keep my portions way down so far. What is the difference between this and the green zone? Sorry for all the questions, being new to this I just don't know what I should expect and when I think I do I get it wrong (like how I thought I was going to be after first fill) Thanks so much for feedback -
I'm 1 week post-op and looking for a good place for online support. The place that I had my surgery done is 2 hours away and I can't drive that far everytime I need support. Anyway, I'm just wondering if there is anyone else out there from Maine?????:car:

Take 3 other meds just to take one? Hmmmm.
i1Linda replied to Newme022310's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Newme Dr. Nick didn't want me to take the ibuprofen but if I was going to, wanted me to go back on Protonix bid to protect my stomach. Obviously, your situation is different. I had an acute problem with a short term solution. If the oxicams are what work for your pain, it sounds like Dr Nick was giving you an option that allows you to continue with it's chronic use while still protecting your tiny tummy. Dr. Nick didn't recommend the ibuprofen, I requested it. It works really well for me for my knee pain, especially post-op. I think different types of pain respond differently to different classes (and subclasses) of pain meds in different people. Most docs start with the proprionic NSAIDs and work from there depending on response. In what way did you find the post-op diet lax? Unless it has changed, it is very similar to most I have seen. For me, post-op has been a breeze (well...starting 3 weeks when I started on mushies). Once I was back on solid food, no problems. I have kept in touch with Melanie, one of his dieticians, with several questions and follow up. I know how to diet, have always known how. I was a great dieter for 2-3 months at a time, but eventually I would get hungry and would fall off the wagon and gain it all back plus a few. As far a complications, none really to speak of. I had some weird back pain at 14 days post-op. It was pretty significant and felt like it was getting worse. I called and was asked to come right in. He ordered leak test as a precaution, no leak. We ended up diagnosing the pain as muscle spasms - I think just knowing there wasn't a leak helped it go away - I'm a worrier. At nearly 6 months post-op, I love my sleeve and more importantly, I love my life with the sleeve  -
If you're trying to decide between weight loss surgeries, I'd suggest going to a seminar (or two, or three!) and getting some info that way. It may just lead to more questions, but is a good start. They want you to exercise, to be healthy, WLS or no. That's not something unique to the lap band.
