    Shoulder pain

    It’s from the carbon dioxide gas they use to inflate your abdomen during surgery. This gas escapes by rising & being absorbed into your blood before being breathed out. When it rises it usually ends up under your diaphragm & puts pressure on a phrenic nerve which causes the shoulder pain. It can take up to a week +/- to disappear. Walking, deep breathing, marching in the spot, lifting your arms up & down all help move the gas. A heating pad can help with the shoulder discomfort too.

    Stall on loss

    20 lbs in four weeks is great. I lost 16 lbs the first month, and I started out well over 300 lbs. Unless you're the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life", a 20 lb lost during month one is pretty normal.

    20lb in 1 month is amazing... Just keep at it. you will slow down in weight loss as you progress out. I am at 6 months and the previous month i only lost like 7lb and so far in two weeks i have lost 2lb... just keep working on it!
  4. My doctor recommended it! I have a couple of chronic illnesses & I've been on doctor monitored diets two times. My doctor noticed I dealt with a lot of stalls & my PCOS was not letting me workout & lose weight like normal. I managed to lose 40lbs during that time but with all of that effort I should have lost double. My doctor referred me to the Bariatric program, did a 10 week class & decided it was for me! I'm 2 weeks post-op, I'm hoping its the solution to my PCOS & that I finally get to slim down like I want to

    Shoulder pain

    I'm 3 days post op. The only thing that hurts is the shoulders. I move around, I drink water, I try to get my protein, my stomach is sore but isn't unbearable. The thing that is unbearable is my shoulders. If it's not the right it's the left or is both. What are some things that helped this and when does it stop??   6. You did the right thing! It didn't take me long to decide. My sister told about the surgery first week of January 2022, spoke to the doctor on Skype the week after and flew to Egypt and had it done end of the month. Best decision ever!
  7. I'm 4 weeks post op tomorrow and starting to feel a little discouraged. I can't do the puree so I start eating real foods . Just small portions small bites and chew chew chew . Which is working great and I finally have energy again . The problem is I have only lost 20 lbs since my surgery and I feel like I should have lost more by now.   8. Tonight’s dinner. Asparagus, some stuffing and 1/3 a smashed potato. I felt that the default MFP entries didn’t account for the butter and olive oil I used to cook so I logged them separately for good measure. Still not the caliber of “healthiness” i said i wanted to get to, but whatevs. Like i said, im lazy, arg. Ate all the asparagus and stuffing but just had one bite of the potatoes (the Kid ate the majority of it…she liked it better than i did, ha) 202 calories for what is shown.

    what surprised you?

    There were two things that really surprised me, despite all the research and reading I did. I didn't know that the first week after the surgery I might not lose anything. I knew that some people come home a little heavier than on surgery day, but coming home 10lbs heavier and then not losing anything for over a week was startling to me. My nutritionist explained that it was normal, and that given the amount I lost during the LSD, I could expect to lose less than normal in the first month. I was expected to be between 279-275 on my next appointment (last Friday), but she said not to worry about it if I didn't hit that. I hit 280.2 the morning of my appointment. The second thing, and if you don't want TMI scroll on, was the surprise appearance of my period more than a week early, accompanied by horrific cramps and clotting. Again, I'd read that it could cause your cycle to run early, or late, but I was not prepared for the worst period of my life. I'm at the tail end of my next cycle and this one hasn't been nearly as bad, but still a good bit worse than I'm used to, so there's a heads up on that lol.

    No cooking!!!

    Hubby and I eat out a lot. I usually make something on Sunday that will last 2-3 days and we'll alternate that with take out. Of course, I eat much differently than I used to. In the liquid stages, Panera was my best friend. Their tomato soup is wonderful. I can still go to every single fast food place we used to, I just opt for better foods in much smaller portions. The other night we got Outback and I had about a 1/3 of a steak along with two small bites of mashed potatoes. Chick-fil-a grilled filets or nuggets are a favorite! I watch my sodium intake otherwise and track everything closely to make sure I'm not going over my fat limits, but I just don't eat a bun or bread with anything and choose high protein options.

    Please tell me I haven't failed.

    Everything about this post seems off. First of all, no one requires a 6-week liquid only diet. It's a day or two at most of clear liquids, then a week or two of full liquids (protein shakes, strained full-thickness soups), then pureed food, and a month later you are eating regular food (slowly, small amounts, chewing carefully, but regular food). I know most GI specialists will have their own version of the post-ESG diet progression, but the variations are not that huge. How do I know this? Because I researched almost all of them before deciding who would perform mine! I made sure I understood the assignment, as the kids say. Second, OP said: "I started at 251 post-colonoscopy-cleanse (since they have to remove all of everything in your gut before doing the procedure)" and "251 is the post cleanse weight, meaning I had everything purged from my system to prep for surgery." WHAT? NO. ESG is an upper GI endoscopic procedure. The doctor enters through your mouth. This has nothing whatsoever to do with your lower GI. All I had to do is one day of clear liquids to make sure the stomach was empty before they go in to stitch it into a sleeve. I seriously doubt OP had an ESG. Or if she did, it was by some hack who did not know what they were doing. Good grief.

    Serving Sizes

    I still haven't vomited but I will have gerd like symptoms if i am not careful. I don't think I can eat 2 eggs regularly. I can pretty much eat anything now as long as it is soft, and I chew a lot. I am a little over four weeks.

    Unable to vomit

    Yeaaaa.. I thought it was just me. After talking to a few other people who had Bypass, it seems like a thing. I know someone who had bypass 3 years ago and hasn't vomited since. like @Arabesque mentioned, I have had a single bite of steak come up one time, from likely not chewing enough. Within minutes of swallowing the bite I was sick and at a restaurant, so went to the bathroom and just stood over the toilet like drooling and gagging,, then PLOP a tiny piece of steak and no joke I FELT PERFECT IMMEDIATELY! IT WAS CRAZY WEIRD. Otherwise just "foamies" 1 other time.

    I started taking fiber gummies every day... having to deal with a couple of bad weeks was enough. The gummies work perfect to keep things regular.

    How much can you eat?

    I had VSG revision to bypass due to gerd over a year ago, but my experience with the VSG and restriction for 6 to 7 years was the following: I didn't have alot of restriction either but had enough to be successful. With meat, about 3 ounces. Everything else about 1 cup. The great thing is... Even years out, I was never able to truly "pig out" again. If and when I ate too much, my heart would pound like crazy. I did have to work to stay away from slider foods since the end result of that is very little restriction. As long as you don't get gerd, and you eat protein first, it is a wonderful tool for weightloss and lifetime restriction but it takes work and commitment.

    October 2022 surgery support

    Dsy 7 post op. I'm feeling pretty good. I've now been able to sleep in my bed the last two nights and that feels wonderful. The scale is finally moving in the right direction and I'm down 58lbs from the beginning of my journey. It's still a little hard to bend down but I'm working on that a little at a time. Still on my liquid diet for 1 more week until i see my dietician. I had a hard day with that two days ago but yesterday, I was back to being ok. Hoping for us all a speedy recovery and of those who still waiting for your day, best of luck!

    October 2022 surgery support

    The surgeon came to see me and turns out I had a 3 for 1 surgery - VSG, gallbladder, and hiatal hernia repair. Makes sense now why my recovery feels so brutal

    August surgery buddies!

    I was prescribed the Ursodiol. Only have to take it for 3 months. I am sorry you have had such a hard time. I can't imagine going through all of that when you are just trying to heal.

    Awful doctor experience

    WOW! How rude and unprofessional! I probably would have walked out and maybe voiced my opinion about how I felt about his pig headedness! (Depends on my mood that day) Like everyone else, find a new surgeon if at all possible. Sorry you had to deal with that. I will say he is likely an amazing surgeon though. I have noticed through my life and thru having a few surgeries that it seems like the better doctor/surgeon has more arrogance and cockiness about them. Worst bed side manor ever but excellent at surgery itself. My WLS surgeon was awkward. haha Very nice, and definitely nothing like you experienced. I really like him but my only complaint was that my surgery took almost 3 hours longer than expected and no one updated my spouse! She had to hunt down people to find out what was going on and why I was taking so long. (No complications, but ended up having a way bigger hernia than the scans showed and I had damage to my esophagus that needed to be repaired from years of GERD. Everything piled up and just took longer than expected) PS! Don't let anyone discourage you! You do you, what is right for you and what you need to do! Don't give up!
  20. my vitamin D was low, but that's super common (especially in the north, where I live). They put me on prescription vitamin D until my level was normal (can remember how long this took - maybe three or four weeks?), then I switched over to an over-the-counter vitamin D tablet.
  21. I specifically asked my surgeon if my pre-op testing was also to check all my vitamin levels. He said no, they used to but ultimately it is pointless. If post-op blood shows deficiencies it ultimately doesn't matter when it started it only matters that we get it regulated now once we found the problem. I have always been slightly low on iron, so my multi vitamin has some iron and I seem to do fine with it. He just said since I knew I was already low in iron, it may get worse and I may switch to iron infusions. 3 month blood work was good though so we will see what happens at 1 yr blood work.

    what surprised you?

    Sometimes restriction takes a bit of time to feel. Due to cut nerves. But I get what you're saying. For me, it depends on the foods that I eat, some offer more restriction than others. Like grilled chicken, denser proteins offer more restriction than say, Greek yogurt or crockpot shredded chicken. The bypass is just a tool, and it will not do all of the work for us, which I have to be mindful of now because when I had a lap band, that thing was so restrictive that almost everything got stuck and felt dense. So when you can, choose denser proteins and weigh/measure your food so your stomach and brain learns what your new "full" feels like. I didn't lose my hunger either like a lot of people do. And I work out and lift weights and that has always made me hungrier, especially when I started weights again at 6 weeks post op. I never experienced nausea, but I know acid can cause nausea. Are you on an acid reducer?

    September 2022 surgery buddies

    I hope you are feeling better. I know I had a bubble that caused me some discomfort until I could walk it out. I know the nutrition class I had really stressed the importance of getting your water in after surgery. I am also having issues with that but found drinking flavored water or chicken broth helps me get my fluids in. Since my favorite water (metromint) is no longer made it have bought Mio (or store brand generics) to flavor my bottled water. That has really helped me. I also take my multivitamin twice a day (since week 3}. I hope you are doing well. The phases seem to have gone by quickly for me, I am on week 2 of soft foods now. October 18th seemed so far away before I had surgery, but it is a week away before I can eat regular food. Good luck, you’ve got this😊

  25. I'm 2 weeks in & I couldn't do much after 1 week still. I didn't have gas or incision pain but I felt a lot of muscle soreness & it was very painful.
