    Activities for Exercise

    The only exercise I have done is a bit of walking, and recently I bought a kayak and I now kayak for around 2 hours once a week when my shifts allow. I dreamt last night of running on the beach does that count as exercise? 😅😅 I had big plans of joining the gym etc but it hasn't happened yet.

    August Surgery Buddies!

    I’m August 1st as well! I start my liver shrinking diet on the 22nd. I only have to do three days of liquids thank goodness. It is soooo exciting!!!

    Activities for Exercise

    I am not a fan of the gym. I dislike the whole concept and I've never enjoyed going (even when I was young and in decent shape). I prefer to do something fun that just happens to make my body exercise. Things like hiking and swimming. I even like playing Beat Saber on VR. I do have an exercise bike I got in April that I've used for ten minutes, once. I'm fairly certain riding an actual bike this early on (surgery isn't for a few weeks) and early in my process would be a challenge. So, my question is, what things do you do that are physical activities outside the gym? My #1 fitness goal is (once I'm a little smaller) to rent a kayak, and hopefully buy one next April (my 50th birthday!). I've never been physically active on a regular basis, so I'd love some ideas of things I've never considered before - I can't wait to get moving!

    August Surgery Buddies!

    Two days before me! My liquid is only three days - two liquid, one clear liquid (day before surgery). They have me on semi-solids for five days before that and a low-cal/carb diet from the 20-25th. I almost wish it was just liquid - it would make me have to think less. I wish I could fast forward to my date so I wouldn't have to do these next two weeks! But, it will all be worthwhile. Are you in the states? Are you staying in the states or going abroad for surgery? Mine is in Tijuana.
  5. agree with the others. Slower weight loss seems to be the norm with revisions. On top of that, you're getting close to a normal BMI. The closer you get, the harder it is to take weight off. You may just be in a long stall (they do seem to become more frequent and last longer the closer you get to a normal BMI), but if you want to keep going, you can always drop your calories. However, if your body is happiest at your current 179 lbs and doesn't want to go lower, it'll be a constant struggle to keep it lower than that (dealing with that myself....). It can be done - but it will be a struggle. I've kind of thrown in the towel at this point. My weight isn't as low as I'd like but it's acceptable. But still, there are days...

    Cucumbers & Tomatoes

    I am 5 weeks out. Also craving. Just bought cucumbers & tomatoes before checking with my Nutritionist. Even before surgery, I always took off the the outer skin of the cucumber to make cucumber salad. Will check with Nutritionist today. May have to give them away.
  9. I’m 3 weeks out from VSG. I’m currently a eating modified regular diet. My plan’s guidance is to stay between 600-800 calories a day. When I eat I definitely fill up quickly and feel restriction which I’m pleased with but I find that I’m hungry again less than an hour later. I’m eating protein, limiting carbs, drinking water, and doing physical activity through walking or recumbent bike. I’m feeling frustrated because I feel like I’m struggling with hunger a lot more than I should. I’m already getting close to maxing out that calorie range but I’m still hungry. I know it’s not head hunger because I have physical hunger symptoms like growling/rumbling stomach. Anyone else experience this and have any thoughts/advice?

    August Surgery Buddies!

    Hello Everyone! My surgery date is August 9th. I had my first consult in November 2021 and my insurance needed 6 months of visits and those didn't start until the end of January! I am so ready! I'll be doing one week of OptiFast. I am a teacher so I'm working so hard getting everything in my labs prepared because I'll be taking off two weeks and coming back to work right at the end of the two weeks. That is what makes me the most nervous...going back to work too soon.

    That's fantastic that your brain is already making those switches for you. I know personally, I need time to make adjustments from old habits. I have been using the "Fabulous" App to help me make those changes gradually. My prep diet is seriously helping me focus and take the brain work out of it. I don't even want to think about what I'm going to do/eat after surgery - I just want it all planned out with various choices of what I can have already made. I vape about three puffs of cannabis at night to help me sleep. My surgeon didn't want me on NSAIDS any longer and he was totally and completely supportive of the cannabis. It really helps without any sleepy hangover in the morning.

    July 2022 peeps!

    I feel like I am watching you all go in for surgery and I am really invested in your well-being! Thinking great thoughts! My surgery is in a week and while I am excited and the Pre-Op Diet is totally manageable, the reality is starting to sink in. I am starting to have a bit of anxiety, like the surgery date is fast approaching. Have I done enough to prepare for the hospital and my return? Will I be able to tolerate the pain? Just keep telling myself to focus on the reward.

    Sleeve to RnY Revision

    I'm curious if you did the sleeve to RNY revision. If so, when? I had it done the day after Thanksgiving 2021. Reflux was gone immediately. I've lost 60 lbs. I lost it pretty quickly, I'm maintaining for over a month now. I was a little freaked out having problems with stopping the weight loss. I did the same thing with sleeve surgery in 2010. I can eat often, but very little at a time. I struggle with meat, an ounce is safe, maybe 1.25 oz, after that, it will end up 'sitting' between my ribs and 9 times out of 10 I'll have to throw up to get relief. Surgery was in Nov, then after a sonogram and endoscopy I had my gallbladder removed in March. (They also discovered a very large marginal ulcer. (What the heck is that?) I had to take a liquid medication 3xs a day and they did another endoscopy 6 weeks later. Ulcer went from very large to large. Six weeks later another endoscopy showed it was healed. Now I'm just focusing on trying to not lose more weight. Gaining 10 lbs would be fine. I'd like to stop there and maintain just under 150. How realistic is this, maintaining from now on. Sadly, sweets and some fried meats (catfish, chicken fried steak) are easy to keep down, mashed potatoes too. I have to weigh meat, and sometimes then it still gets to me. What's up with that? Any advice, insight etc would be greatly appreciated. Share you story with me if you've had the sleeve to bypass revision.

    Day 28

    Hi all, For me these posts help keep me in check on a few things. Everything is going well and my nutritionist has released me to more foods. On Monday I added baked and grilled fish, soft veggies, fruit etc. He still doesn’t want me to set my macros until next month but once me to get 100-120 gr of protein, and up my carbs a bit. So, I’ve added berries and banana. My weight loss has slowed down, but with adding foods and so much water loss I’m not surprised. Plus of course, you hear about the three week stall. With the added food, I certainly have more energy. Now, I need to add cardio. The weights have been going well and I’m getting stronger Pre Surgery Weight: 336 Surgery Weight: 330 4 week Weight: 305.6. Goal weight: 275 Note: I was having some light headed issues, especially when getting up. It was my blood pressure dropping. I’m now down to 1/2 a pill per day. I am hoping with more weight loss I’ll be off completely. Good luck everyone.

    ESG post diet

    Hi. I had my ESG on June 15th. I agree with you, it doesn’t make sense and mine was for 21 days. At day 15th, I was doing great and added sugar free pudding, Greek yogurt and hummus. No issues. I’m now a day past week 4. My weight loss has slowed tremendously, but everyone or majority slow down or have a 2 to 3 week stall. But it’s still about the calorie deficit. I’ve started with weights but I know I need more cardio. With the liquid diet I was too exhausted but now I’ve added other soft foods and energy is coming back. Unlike sleeve or bypass, my doctor has released me to do any workouts. We don’t have the staples or stomach cuts.
  16. The body is amazing at healing itself. Considering the serious wounds this surgery inflicts, a week is an extraordinarily short amount of time! Glad you're much more comfortable now.
  17. My surgery was June 29th. My pain has been really good. My energy level is really low. I've lost 19 pounds already. I am trying to keep up on water intake, etc. I'm still staying with relatively smooth, liquid/purreed foods. I am having a couple of issues though.. 1. Right where my adam's apple would be, if I had one, it constantly feels like there is a little pill there that is stuck. It's not so bad until I swallow anything...even saliva. Then it feels from that spot down into the middle of my chest like something doesn't want to go down, but I know there is nothing there. I went back to the clinic that did my surgery and they had me swallow that barium stuff and did a scan. They showed me and say it looks okay to them... I am just curious if anyone else has felt this and what it may be? It's driving me insane. Seriously. 2. I did not go to the bathroom for a BM for 9 days after surgery. I had to take a lot of PEG laxatives to finally go, and now every other day since then, my stools are still black and tar like. Is that normal this far out? The clinic checked my blood and my hemoglobin was totally normal, so they aren't worried... 3. No matter how much water or fluids I am drinking, my mouth is so extremely dry that it sticks together and is so uncomfortable... It's weird! I have a total of about 70-80 pounds to lose. I was borderline for sure, but I have very extreme Barrett's Esophagus, tumors in my esophagus (they were removed and biopsied), GERD, vocal chord dysfunction, an esophageal ulcer, and precancer in my esophagus. My surgeons believe this surgery could save my life. So... my main reason was to help me heal my esophagus. Thanks for any advice and help!

    Almost there

    I'm not far off my goal either (10kg to go), and the rate of loss has definitely slowed down to a crawl. Some weeks I lose nothing, then the next I'll be down half a kilo, but I was both warned of this by my dietician and my own research so it's fine. It's good not to get hung up on the number on the scale, because what actually matters more to me is how my clothes fit, and despite the slow scale movement, my clothes continue to loosen. I'm now a small size AU16/US12 to a large AU14/US10. My goal is AU12/US8. I'm so close I can taste it! So another 10kg will actually put me below that, so I'm honestly fine to call "Maintenance" once I'm a comfortable AU12/US8. If that means my weight is above 75kg, that's fine. That's where I'll settle! So don't put too much stock in the scale. It's easy to get hung up on it, and it's freeing to realise it's not actually THE ONE measure of success. Be patient, enjoy being so close, and know you'll get there. My dietician said I should hit goal by the end of this year, but I'm way ahead of that! I keep that in mind any time I feel a little disappointment at the crawling scale number. And as I've told friends and family, if I stay where I am now, I'll still be happy. I can buy clothes almost anywhere, and blend in with the lean crowd, which is all I've ever wanted! Anything beyond this is a bonus.

    Hi Kristieshannon...thanks for your response. I am in california, but I had my surgery in Miami. so confused if I should just keep on wearing the binder my surgeon gave me. The surgeons office said to wear stage 1 faja with foams, I am not even sure how to wear foams I mean they gave me 2 so do I wear them to the sides where the Lipo was or on the abdomen or what. so frustrating as i am 4 weeks post op today.
  20. Yeah, I’ve heard the same thing - comparatively a slower rate of loss post revision & less weight loss. And that they can eat more than they did in the early stages post their first surgery. Maybe because your tummy isn’t changed again with the revision just where it joins the intestines??? You’ll still experience stalls which is what this may be or you could have reached your body’s set point - the weight at which it is happy.

    ESG post diet

    Glad you’re feeling great physically post surgery. You have had 80 odd precent of your tummy removed. What’s left is being held together by staples & sutures. It can be easy to forget what they did inside you when all you can see is 4 or 5 tiny little incisions that heal relatively quickly. Imagine how you would care for a deep cut about 12 inches long with multiple sutures on your arm & how long that would take to heal. (Took 4 weeks for a small skin graft I had on my thumb to be healed enough to have the sutures removed but it still had to be bandaged & protected for another month after.) The staged return to eating is to support & not strain your tummy while it is healing. Leaks, as a result of pulling or straining stitches & staples are a real possibility & can be dangerous if you don’t treat your tummy with care. For many of us, the liquid stage post surgery is only two weeks before we progress to purées. Then another two weeks until soft foods, etc. Some people find they need to stay longer at a stage because their tummy isn’t healed enough to tolerate the denser food. You can always ask your surgeon why they require more than a fortnight on liquids. Maybe they’ll allow you to start adding some purées earlier. Best is always to stick to the plan you have been given though. You won’t gain weight by eating more solid foods. As @kcuster83 said as long as you are eating in a calorie deficit & forcing your body to burn fat to get the energy it needs to function effectively, you will lose weight. Your weight loss does slow as you are able to eat more & a broader range of foods & as you get closer to your goal. Unfortunately, the heady & exciting days of raid weight loss doesn’t last. I wonder how much of your hunger is actually head hunger which is coming from you sub consciously wanting to soothe your anxiety & anger with food as you likely did before surgery. The head work can be the most difficult challenge of this process.

    My insurance doesn't require any weight loss before surgery, but my doctor does. The dietician there gave me two months to lose 15 pounds. I'm 4 pounds away. I've been really relaxed with my diet and exercise up until now. If I don't lose the 4 pounds by Monday then I have to do two weeks of a strict liquid diet instead of one week of liquid diet before surgery. I think I'm just going to jump in and do liquid diet for a few days. It'll be a good test run! Also, if I'm being honest, I'm so stubborn. I hate it when people tell me what I have to eat.     Howdy! My prop goal weight was 230 and that was set by me. I wanted to maximize the weight loss of the surgery as much as possible since I wanted to lose over 100 lbs. My doctor only requires 2 weeks liquid diet prior to my surgery date on Aug 18 the. I wanted to get a headstart, play with recipes, and establish new habits so there wouldn't be a ton of changes at once. This way I can monitor how we'll the fiber is working too. I suffer from constipation and I want to ensure I can do everything to avoid any complications. The Organic Plum Stage 1 baby food is a total WIN because they have yummy prunes plus protein and fiber!!

    What’s your pre-op weight goal? Is this something the doctor asks for or something you want? How is it determined? (I have so many questions. Lol. Sorry!) My diet is all liquids with only 1 Greek yogurt,1 egg or 1 jello a day allowed (as a non-liquid) so I keep going back and forth on starting 1 week early.

    My program only has the liquid diet for the two days prior to surgery, instead of two weeks. I see the surgeon tomorrow and I'm going to ask why they only do it for the two days. My surgeon has many many years of experience, I have friends who have done really well with him so I trust his process, but I'm just curious.
