I am 23 days post op and on soft foods now per my doc. Ever since surgery, when I eat, my stomach never feels settled or “normal”. I wouldn’t say I’m nauseous, but it’s close to it. I can only eat very little. A few ounces at most so I’m not over eating. I’m waiting 30-1 hour before drinking fluids again. I thought eating soft foods might make my stomach feel “normal” again but it hasn’t. Is this just because my stomach is still healing you think? I force myself to eat because I know I need to, but my stomach feels the same before I eat and after I eat. It’s hard to explain. I can only say that it does not feel like a normal stomach feels if that makes sense🤣 Most people say they feel “normal” after 2-3 weeks. I always feel sickly, but not to the point of throw up. Any advice or similar experiences are greatly appreciated. I see my doc for follow up on Wednesday. Also, I am a revision patient. Lap Band to Sleeve.

I'm super excited to no longer be a prisoner to my Omeprazole! Bypass FTW! -
Hang in there, I know it will get better. I had my gallbladder removed many, many years ago the old fashioned way -- they had to cut me in half to get it. If I could endure that pain, I figure I can handle the bypass. I also have a hiatal hernia that the surgeon will deal with during the surgery, so your post is very helpful to me. Thanks for the liquid Tylenol information too.

Revision to sleeve
zalina replied to MeekMeek77's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a gastric bypass in November 2016, lost 70pounds and kept it for about 2.5 years until I fell and broke the hip. Since than I gained about 25 pounds. Now I am trying to loose weight, but nothing happens. Any suggestion. -
When (if ever) did you stop thinking of yourself as fat?
GreenTealael replied to MaineDoc's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The very first time I felt the full impact of my weight loss was when I began to have A LOT more energy for tasks and activities I had long dropped because of fatigue. Walking long distances became pleasurable again and I encouraged others (mostly my thin & lazy teen kids) to join me. I believe it was around 190lbs (down ~60lbs) Next was when my super attractive Surgical PA said he wasn't worried about me or my progress, I was at the proper weight for my frame and I looked *amazing*. I could tell he really meant it by the way he gushed over my results. That was around 160lbs (down 90lbs) Another time, I was waiting in my surgeon's office about to discuss revision (from VSG to RNY to solve a few complications) and a prospective patient kept staring. Hard. He eventually asked me if i was waiting with/for someone and I told him no just my surgeon. I thought he was trying to *pick me up* but in fact he was confused that I needed to see a surgeon & was a WLS patient because i didn't look like it. (I've heard these types of comments several times) Two final events sealed the deal for me: My Bariatric surgeon and I decided revision to RNY was the best course of action for me but he DID NOT want me to lose anymore weight. He was adamant that I was at the right size and was already small enough at 155lbs & 5'3". (The revision went well and I'm maintaining in the 150s as promised.) Finally, I had Plastic surgery. At the Preop workup, I was discussing my plan with the surgeon. I wanted a Mommy Makeover- breast augmentation, Tummy Tuck and Brazilian Butt Lift. I wanted lipo on my back to transfer fat to my buttocks. He informed me that there wasn't much fat to lipo and it was excess skin that needed to be removed (instead I would need skin removal - a back lift and *maybe* after we could lipo my inner thighs for fat grafting.) He manually lifted the skin to prove it. I was shocked because I thought for certain it was excess fat but apparently I have thicker skin in certain areas. ****************************************** I took the long way round just to say that there were many incremental (progress) points that help me view myself differently/adequately and not just one defining Aha! moment. For sure outside validation played it's role and luckily I became receptive to complements instead of misanthropic because of society's new level of interaction with me (nicer, more welcoming) However, I'm unsure if I would have ever believed anyone's comments if I didn't begin to feel & see the change on my own first. Being kind, loving and accepting myself at every single stage of weight loss, instead of just at goal, really helped me. Good Luck ❤ -
Gastric Bypass better than Gastric sleeve in reducing co-morbidities
Mello1 replied to over65's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I had my initial appointment in October, I thought the VSG was what I wanted. The doctor had a long conference with his assistant and it was taking a long time for him to come in. When he did (I was getting mad because they were taking so long), he recommended the By-Pass for that very reason. I had a GERD/Reflux episode so bad earlier that year that I had to go to critical care. Once I read that some VSG patients developed Reflux, I was like NOPE. I'm going with the By-pass. I think I read that technical study or one similar to it a few months ago -- you tend to lose more weight faster and your metabolism seems to reset with the Bypass. Bypass, I'm all in. 3 weeks until the surgery. -
Got approved to have vsg surgery but I want the gastric bypass now! Can I switch.. my surgery date is March 11, 2020 help
catwoman7 replied to Stephaniiee_u's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
P.S. and do have the surgery you want to have provided you don't have medical issues that would favor one over the other. A lot of surgeons prefer doing sleeve these days because it's a quicker, easier surgery (for them, that is), but insist on bypass if that's what you want. -
Nauseous 5 weeks post op help!
catwoman7 replied to Ready2slimdown's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
call your surgeon. Could be a stricture. They happen to about 5% of bypass patients and almost always appear between 1-3 months post-surgery, so you're in the window. If that's what it is, they'll do an EGD and stretch it out. I had two of them (one at four weeks out and the second at eight weeks out). The EGD is painless (you'll be knocked out) and you'll feel better immediately. also - if you're able to keep fluids down, it should be fine if you can't get in to see someone for a couple of days, but if it gets to the point where you can't even keep fluids down, then go to the hospital. You can live without food for a few days, but not water/fluids. -
I am 13 months post revision band to bypass and lately nothing seems to taste right. Meat in particular tastes weird. I don’t have an issue eating it, it doesn’t get stuck or make me sick but it tastes and often smells weird. For example the lamb mince we ate tonight tasted very gamey. I used to love pork and would often order it when we went out but the last couple of times that hasn’t tasted right either! At this rate I am going to end up vegetarian which could be a problem as there are a heap of veggies I hate ( the bitter ones) , don’t really like eggs ( I can do the yolks so long as they are runny) and only eat small quantities of cheese. On top of that if I try to turn my hubby veggie he will rebel! I can’t live on yogurt nuts and seeds! Has anyone else been through this and how did you deal with it?

My pre op appointment is feb 28, 2020 and I’m thinking of my surgeon if I can have the gastric bypass instead of the sleeve.. I’ve just done more research and I think I would benefit more from it rather than the sleeve.. what do you guys think? Has anyone switched last minute or am I living in fairy tale land hoping for something that isn’t going to happen?

Why did you choose the surgery you had/will have?
VIN_IN_AL replied to KlaPV's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I never wanted WLS and tried just about everything available in the weight loss industry to avoid it, including attending a weight loss “boot camp”. Unfortunately, every time I lost weight; it slowly came back. I decided to see four surgeons from different health provides when I finally decided the surgical route would have to be considered. I left it up to them to tell me what procedure I should have. Of the four, only one recommended a full bypass, all others suggested Gastric Sleeve so that is what I am planning to do in April 2020. -
Nauseous 5 weeks post op help!
Ready2slimdown posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 5 1/2 weeks post bypass I progressed smoothly through my stages however for the past 2 days everything is making me nauseous including my protein shake. After drinking my protein shake I got the foamies and slimy stuff. I am trying to keep hydrated. I am only able to eat 3 or 4 baby spoons of food before the nausea kicks in. Has anyone else had this happen and if so how did you overcome it? Thanks! -
Gastric Bypass better than Gastric sleeve in reducing co-morbidities
catwoman7 replied to over65's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yes - people with GERD should go with bypass. GERD doesn't get worse - or start up - for EVERYONE, but it's a significant enough minority that I didn't want to risk it (I had GERD pre-surgery). I've seen too many people getting revisions because of out-of-control GERD after sleeve. No thanks. and yes - either surgery can throw diabetes into remission, but the percentage is quite a bit higher with bypass. -

I don't have sleep apnea, but I DO have GERD. And that was another major reason why we both decided upon bypass. -

Another article said 15% of patients have sleeve developed GERD who didn't have before surgery. Those with GERD before surgery were much worse after sleeve. But bypass resolved pre-existing GERD. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app -
I thought I wanted gastric sleeve for WLS. My main reason was my concern about malabsorption at my age. I have multiple co-morbidities associated with my obesity. Now I am considering gastric bypass instead. Of course, I will make final decision with my surgeon. "Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Versus Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy to Treat Morbid Obesity-Related Comorbidities: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26661105 "a total of 18,455 patients, enrolled in 62 recent studies, were included in this meta-analysis. Patients receiving LRYGB had a significantly higher percentage of excess weight loss and better resolution of hypertension, dyslipidemia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and arthritis compared with those receiving LSG. LRYGB and LSG showed similar effects on type 2 diabetes mellitus and sleep apnea." Found a journal article "Biological effects of bariatric surgery on obesity-related comorbidities" https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3569476/ DIABETES AND IMPAIRED GLUCOSE TOLERANCE "A landmark paper by Pories and colleagues demonstrated that of 141 patients with diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), all but 2 became euglycemic within 10 days after RYGB. Longer follow-up demonstrated that over 8 years, 83% of patients with preoperative T2DM and 99% of those with IGT were able to maintain normal levels of plasma glucose, HgA1C and insulin." OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA "Most patients (62%) had residual disease. In fact, only 25% of patients in the 6 studies that reported individual patient data (representing 23% of all patients in the meta-analysis) were able to reach an AHI consistent with OSA resolution ( DYSLIPIDEMIA Hyperlipidemia, hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia were significantly improved across all surgical procedures at 2 year follow-up. The percentage of patients whose conditions improved was typically 70% or higher, with maximum improvements in hyperlipidemia in the BPD-DS (91%) and RYGB groups (96.9%). HYPERTENSION "The percentages of patients in the total population whose hypertension resolved or improved were 61.7% and 78.5%, respectively." Only those who did not regain weight maintained lower blood pressure after two years. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

This makes no sense. If the band was a failure and was causing you problems, why would they deny a revision? Is that a Canadian healthcare thing? I had a slipped lap band removed and a revision to a gastric bypass, and Medicare paid for it without batting an eye! Good luck to you with your endeavors!

Is weight loss surgery for me?
New&Improved replied to imaginegirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If you choose the bypass or DS it will redirect your intestines and reset and change your metabolism its not just about the volume of food. There's a ton of research about the metabolic changes..
