  1. When is your December 2015 surgery date for RNY/Gastric Bypass? I'm scheduled for 2 December 2015 in Brugge, Belgium
  2. Following this topic. I have kept an empty band for a couple of years now and now have to either get it out or revised. (My band was emptied due to its interference with the vagus nerve which was provoking atrial fibrillation.) I just saw my surgeon yesterday who has given me three choices: accept my weight where it is, diet the rest of the weigh off, or mini gastric bypass. She is not pro-sleeve for my situation, as she views the sleeve as the next "lapband" in that she has more and more sleeve patients gaining back their weight and doesn't think the longterm weight maintenance is proving to be the case with restrictive methods such as lapbands and sleeves. She has floated the idea of a mini-gastric bypass as her best recommendation for my situation. I'm researching this but I doubt I will do it. The potential complications from the malabsorptive WLS are rather scary to me. Enough that I will probably just go back to Weight Watchers and grit my teeth to get the rest of my weight off.

    Lap Band Vs. Sleeve

The rny is the full gastric bypass. Roux en y, I think it's spelled. My doc wanted me to do the sleeve or bypass but I wanted to least invasive so picked Lapband. Also felt better that it can be removed. And if Lapband for some reason wasn't effective, my insurance would let me go for the sleeve or rny in 2 years anyway

    Bad Breath

I wouldn't either necessarily, particularly with a bypass that can be more prone to dumping, but some plans do permit it, usually in dilute form. I had a juice box in the hospital (but our diet was somewhat more "advanced" than most, being on soft and puree foods as well at that time.) There are many foods that may not be the greatest thing for weight loss intermediate to longer term that can be useful in small amounts in the shorter term transitional period - mashed potatoes are another common soft food item that has value at this time that we may rather stay away from later on (or maybe not - lots of potassium in there...) It's a big YMMV thing, and there is no definitive right or wrong answer, and sometimes specific problems, such as the OP's can have solutions that seem counterintuitive to some.
  5. I had the sleeve and it doesn't help with cravings. The reason I chose sleeve over bypass is because I didn't want to experience dumping. I knew there would be times I would want a bite of something sweet, and didn't want to deal with dumping. I have lost 140 pounds with the sleeve and am at goal.
  6. I was revised from Band to Bypass. Something to think about, if you've got GERD or other acid issues... the Sleeve is *NOT* going to be the option you want to go with.

    Decisions, Decisions.

Well apparently, biological kids aren't really an option for me, apparently - which is fine. In fact, I'd hope they'd just take out all the stuff that's not working correctly for me haha. (the malfunction of my girly stuff isn't due to weight) Its come down to an insurance coverage question, really. I want the sleeve but will settle for the band if I _have_ to - and then pay for the sleeve revision later if need be. I don't have the funds to do it now but hopefully in the future.

    Doing research

Do a lot of research and ask a lot of questions. Determine what kind of eater you are... sweets and high calories foods or a volume eater of healthy foods. Beware that ice-cream, chocolate, chips, and other simple carb. foods easily slip past the band. Unlike gastric bypass, the band does NOT cause you to lose weight through malabsorption. It's a restrictive device designed to make you feel full after eating a balanced diet. SOME surgeons do not advise lapbanding if you're a junk food junkie while others say it doesn't matter. Take your time and make an informed decision for yourself. Don't get talked into something you're not ready for or sure of. That said, I am happy that I went ahead with my surgery.

    Doing research

Hi! Welcome to LBT...Please tell us more about your journey as you decide. You are both quiet young and would truely have a lifetime to reap the rewards of weightloss and added health. I'm 34 almost 35 and am to be banded 4-2-07...5'6" @ 367# no health issues YET. I have not been very sucessful in healthy weight maintenance since I was 18 years old. I know this is the option for me (not bypass) and I can't do it on my own. We each need to make an informed decission, and with much research it should come easy, but not lightly! Use all your options to find information. good luck and health to you both
  10. I changed surgeons because he was pushy and insisted on the RNY Bypass. After much research and talk, I decided that I could not live with the side effects of the bypass. The dumping in particular. Research does not support their assertion about the weight loss. I changed surgeons, continued down the VSG and here I am, 9 days post op and feeling great. When I went to my pre-op orientation, I was the only person in the room that was not having the bypass. The other surgeon pushes that procedure. My surgeon spent almost an hour talking to me in the initial visit explaining the surgeries and answering my questions. If you haven't seen the surgeon yet, I would suggest moving on. GET A SECOND OPINION, and find a surgeon you can trust! No Regrets and good luck, BopPop
  11. My mom & aunt both had the bypass and regret it everyday. They both look like the walking dead and have to take like 25 vitamins a day because they cannot get the nutrients from food because their stomachs are bypassed. I had the sleeve (my bmi was 44) and I recommend it to everyone. It was the best thing I've ever done. My surgeon doesn't like doing bypasses because how rough they are on the body.
  12. I had my original sleeve done in 2016, went from 290 pre-surgery to 195, felt fantastic, no problems at all, they even invited me to have my picture taken for the doctor's advertising! Then I had some personal and professional problems and managed to gain EVERYTHING back. I met with my doctor and he recommended revision, which I am scheduled for some time in November, currently getting my clearances. He said after my endoscopy we'd discuss whether to re-sleeve or convert to bypass. He said if my sleeve was still intact it would have to be a bypass, but if it was dilated I could choose. I had my endoscopy last week and the sleeve is indeed dilated so now I have to make a decision. Another factor is I've had GERD for over 10 years and take esomeprazole daily which helps a lot but I've heard it's not great to take that forever either. I've also heard that bypass usually cures GERD, so that's another consideration. I'd love to hear thoughts from anyone who has either been re-sleeved or converted to bypass so I can have a better understanding of both options before I meet with my doctor again, Thanks!
  13. I’m curious... I’ve seen many posts of people going from sleeve to bypass. Can I ask why? The sleeve is so popular now that I’m quite surprised at the number of people who end up going to a bypass later on. I am not a candidate for sleeve due to GERD so bypass for me. But the sleeve was what I wanted.
  14. I would be surprised if they only keep you in 1 night after a DS, it’s pretty major surgery. Here in Aus it is standard practice to keep bypass patients 3 or 4 nights. Why have you decided to go full DS straight away? It’s not a very common choice. Most people either do the sleeve and if that doesn’t work go the next step and have the DS or they have an RNY
  15. Thanks guys..........just to clarify......had band removed 7 years ago... Am headed to Mexico for my Sleeve and noted on a Docs website that Revision surgeries are at higher risk of having to go Open surgery. Am just trying to get a real world feel of how often the Revision Sleeve Surgery turns into an Open surgery. At 59 years Old................I don't NOT want Open surgery.
  16. 20 lbs. a month is great. Don't compare yourself to other peoples #'s. Its healthier to lose the weight more gradual over this 12 month period as opposed to dropping the bulk of it right off. You'll have less lose skin and always remember everyone loses at their own pace. Stick with your plan and you'll do fine...also set realistic goals and have realistic expectations. Bypass patients are actually expected to lose the weight over a one year period of time...its not a race. Patience is a virtue also congrats on the 20 lbs... Sent from my Nexus S 4G using RNYTalk
  17. So I am a week out of surgery. First couple of days it felt like I did 10 000 sit ups. Today it feels like only doing 500. Got my walking down, sipping my liquids but need to sip a lot more to meet my goal. I know it doesn't happen overnight. I start each day with a Boost Diabetic Protein drink. Nice to see there is an app for this. Hope I get to know others here. Cheers manitobamama

    Recovery-returning back to work

When I had lap band surgery I was back teaching summer school (middle school) after a week. I am planning on returning to work after the revision surgery after a week as well. I think it is doable as long as you listen to your body, pace yourself, and remember to drink drink drink during the day. It can be easy to get distracted at work and forget to eat/drink regularly. So many updates, so little time...

I am a year and a half out and I sorta wish I had gone with the bypass too. Not cause of any complications, just cause I didn’t lose as much as I had hoped and I wonder if the grass would’ve been greener on the other side. I chose sleeve because I am on medications though and have to remind myself that I may have issues with that had I chosen differently. I think it’s pretty natural to wonder if things could have been better if we had made a different choice but who knows. I have to think that everything happens for some reason. That’s what makes me feel a little better about it.

So many updates, so little time...

Well, I'm on day 14 of my stall, and it's weird that I'm not stressing. I think I expect it to last a good 3 to 3 1/2 weeks since each stall lasts about a week longer than the previous one. My scope is next week, and I'll be glad to finally get it done. I seem to be doing ok with 40mg of Nexium twice a day, although I have to really watch what I eat still, and I have to take the GI cocktail when I start having bad problems again. I took it for a week before every meal. Now I take it as needed. The shedding from my hair is getting pretty heavy now. It's not worrying me because I knew it was coming, but it's really getting on my nerves!!! My hair is literally getting EVERYWHERE!!! I have to clean it a few times a day. If I run my fingers through my hair, I shed. If I brush my hair, I shed. If I wash my hair, I shed. When I get up in the morning, the movement on my pillow through the night caused me to MAJORLY shed. It's really aggravating. I'll be glad when it slows down. Now that I'm almost 4 1/2 months out from surgery, I noticed I'm able to eat larger portions of food. That's tripped me up a few times, so I have to be extra mindful of that. I really wish I had lost my hunger, and I really wish I had restriction. I didn't get any of the useful benefits or "extras" that most get with the surgery. BUT, I'm still working out and doing what I'm supposed to. I just wish it wasn't such an uphill battle everyday. I definitely wish I had gone with the bypass. But I didn't, so I'm going to do everything I can to make this work.
  21. So I'm not the only one I see! I should have said in my first post that I don't expect to lose 5 pounds a week from the get go. I had the lapband so this isn't my first rodeo and needing the band in the first place means that I am fat to begin with and have really tried everything to lose weight. I am really hoping that my body would act accordingly and get rid of 1-2 pounds(3 on a good week) of fat and we could all just happily move on. Being that I am eating nearly pure Protein and small amounts of veggies, I thought that this time(just like I mistakenly did with the band) that I could shed the pounds more consistantly. I'm not obsessive about the scale. Some mornings I get one, some I don't. I can't totally rely on mine anyways. I prefer the digital one at the doctor's office. Yes, I know how much protein I need and I usually get that. I can get 35 grams in at breakfast for only 260 calories with my veggie sausage patties and small protein shake from the doctor's office. I nibble on organic turkey breast, tuna, some cheese, and drink Muscle Milk. I'm very well aware of my Water intake, carbs, etc. I don't worry about sodium as I don't eat frozen meals or canned Soups and stuff like that. Any salt I get comes from what I would add from cooking which is little. I'm not a huge salt fan. What I think made today worse for me that maybe for someone else is that I'm on my second surgery and I am having deju vu. I see this turning out just like the damn lapband. I played the game and did everything that I was supposed to do with that band and it didn't work. You should see all the clothes that are hanging in my closet with tags still on them from the fall of 2010 when I was all excited about being skinny. This time around I didn't throw out a thing. I can't fall for that trap again. I know it's wrong to have such a negative outlook going into this, but I am just trying to protect myself against possible reality of failure once more. I refuse to have another surgery of this type again. Bypass, Roux-en Y, or whatever other new procedure may crop up will not be taking place in my body. My sister had the sleeve done on March 2, she lost 35, yes, 35 pounds in the first 4-5 weeks. She was pretty sick and dehydrated during that time and I wouldn't want to be in her shoes and wish the same for myself. She is now down 64 after 5 months. I'm not comparing myself to her, but I do use her experience to gauge what is possible.
  22. I am 5'5, weight about 15lbs less than you and my doctor encouraged me to get the sleeve over bypass. I don't know why the doctor would try to sell you a surgery that you aren't expecting to get, days before your surgery too. Sounds fishy
  23. I would wonder why they were pushing a bypass so hard? Does the doctor have experience doing the sleeve & feel competent to do it? The most recent stats I have seen lately show the sleeve & bypass dead even @ 2 years out. I hope you stick to the decision that best suits YOU. Best wishes....
  24. My doctor doesn't recommend the lap bad with a BMI of over 35, but says at a BMI of 54 i was a good canidate for either the sleeve or the by pass. I didn't want a bypass because of the malabsorbstion issues. at 6months I am down from 407 to 311, and couldn't be happier about my choice.
  25. I originally wanted to do the lap band. My surgeon,PA, psych, nut all were against it. They were pushing so hard with the bypass. I am determined(still) that I will not let them sway me. I understand everything they say...so I really did a lot of research and I am doing the sleeve. But my Dr. said he DID NOT want to do the band. I say do what ai tell ya! Good luck to you
