  1. Hi Bren, Welcome! Excited for you!! I’m scheduled for gastric bypass on 3/11. Curious, did your Dr. describe the difference between the bypass and mini bypass? Anythng you can share on it would be most helpful. Thanks!

    Sucralfate

I am a revision patient. I was sleeved on 1-30. My main reason for taking this medication is because I’m nauseous all day. My doc thought this may help me. I am only supposed to take mine 3x a day. He also gave me zofran.
  3. I'm scheduled for March 12. My surgeon and I are still deciding between a Gastric Bypass or a Mini Gastric Bypass. But one way or another - here I go!

    Post op diet

Hi everyone. My surgery date is 02-20-20. I liked the date. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m on protein shakes and clear liquids and get my staples out next Thursday, so I’m right there with you all. Anyway, I had the RNY back before it was cool or before much research had been done about it—nearly 14 years ago. It was amazingly successful. I was on my treadmill in 18 hours. I went from 261 to 155 after a tummy tuck (the extra skin gets gross). But over time, I slowly was able to tolerate anything I wanted, and ultimately ended up back at 267. So I was approved for a revision for DS (duodenal switch) surgery. This experience was not like the last quick laparoscopic one. Last Thursday I came out of the OR with a 13” incision down my abdomen recovery has been awful. I’m in no rush to move onto soft foods, because I remember being at the 5 year mark and unable to lose weight when I wanted to for the first time. My Dr. told me to go back to the post-op Diet for a month and it really worked. Then I tried it at the 10 year mark and it didn’t do anything. So as much as it sucks having family around you able to consume everything, just know that your 1-month weigh-in is going to blow your socks off unlike anything you have experienced, so my advice is to enjoy the journey. The longer you can tolerate the liquids, the faster your initial weight loss will be. And although you will lose a lot of weight throughout the first year, you will never lose as rapidly as you will during the first 30 days post-op. And you only get one chance at that. So, as hard as it may seem some days, be patient and don’t rush this opportunity. Congratulations to everyone. Here’s to a new and improved life!
  5. I’m tomorrow 😳😳😳 March 2nd sleeve revision to SIPS DS. Nervous, excited, nervous haha. I’m in Boston woukd love to hear from others having surgery tomorrow or this week!

    Anyone Have March Surgery Date?😊

My surgery is also march 9th and Gastric Bypass! We're surgery twins!
  7. March 9th here! Gastric bypass. Good luck to everyone!
  8. Same as some of the others: Didn't want to have the nutrient absorption problems from bypass or have my intestines messed with. I love having a smaller stomach - overeating plus being addicted to sugar and carbs was my problem. Prior to surgery I could eat A LOT at one sitting. Being on the liquid high protein diet both two weeks prior to gastric sleeve surgery then four weeks after cured my sugar/carb addiction, thank goodness. The other reason was cost - way less expensive due to being able to do it outpatient. I'm self-pay so that was a huge factor. And yes, stay away from NSAIDS post sleeve - aspirin, ibuprofen, etc. My surgeon says it's an instant ulcer to take any of them. And no pills (vitamin, etc.) larger than an M&M. BTW: The body makes all the carbs we need by converting it from protein and from fat stores - there's absolutely no need to eat any though vegetables are super good for us for the fiber and nutrients. Getting enough fiber when you can eat regular foods is vital. I stick with the low-carb veggies and take a vitamin C supplement rather than eat fruit. I don't miss it.
  9. I am tentatively scheduled for bypass on March 23! A little nervous! My husband just had his sleeve on Friday. He is doing great!

Anyone pre-plan to only have lapband a year?

Yeah look at bypass or sleeve they are much better safer
  11. AlwaysCruising

    so undecided...

I wouldn’t tell you what to do, but there are a lot of people who had bands in the past having them removed or revised to another type of surgery. It is based solely on restriction (while the sleeve and bypass use restriction but also go further in that other factors such as gastric variables also come into play in assisting with weight loss).

    MO HealthNet Approval

Hi there everyone. Newbie here. I am going thru this fun process. I am waiting to get insurance approval. I know they will approve since the bypass is covered. However, I was wondering if anyone else has this insurance (Medicaid). If so how long did it take to get your official approval so you get your surgery date. Thanks in advance.
  13. JRT Mom

    so undecided...

Get the band if you want to have to do all this over again in about 10 years....and fight with it those ten years....I know that there are some real success stories with the band, but they are the exception rather than the rule. I wish I hadn't wasted 11 years with mine before it slipped, gave me a hiatal hernia and I had to have it removed and a revision to RNY. Whatever you decide to do, it IS your decision, but do your homework. And whatever you decide, good luck! We are rooting for you.
  14. When my endo about jumped off her stool in horror when I mentioned gastric bypass 😟
  15. Starting weight: 266lbs / 19st / 120kg Current weight: 156lbs / 11st 2lbs / 70kg Goal weight: 140lbs / 9st / 63.5kg Surgery date: 9th June 2019 Surgery: Gastric Bypass What do I eat in a day? Example: Breakfast - protein yoghurt (17g protein) Snack - protein bar (10g protein) Lunch: 20g protein from lean meat & veg Snack: cheese (10g protein) Dinner: 20g protein from lean meat with veg & carbs (I portion everything out on a bariatric plate) Sometimes I will snack at night time on cheese / another low carb - high protein snack) I usually end up on around 75g protein per day. My goal is 60g. I post recipes / meal inspiration on Instagram a lot. @charlieannnn Www.instagram.com/charlieannnn
  16. Let’s participate in Face to Face Friday! Here is one of me. Left is 60 lbs ago and right is today! I am two months out from gastric bypass.
  17. I'm surprised you found a surgeon who's willing to do the lapband. Most have abandoned this surgery because so many people had complications from it. The sleeve has largely replaced it as an alternative to the bypass.
  18. I'm not a WLS veteran, being only 11 months post bypass, but would like input from you veterans. Do you think that all the measuring, weighing, and tracking of food leads to disordered eating? I have a history of anorexia long before I was morbidly obese so I obviously have some sort of problem with food!! I just started Intermittent fasting and kind of feel I am entering a slippery slope towards another eating disorder because I have put pressure on myself to lose 9 pounds this month to get to my goal by my surgiversary. My therapist thinks that all the tracking is detrimental, but I think I need to track for fear of gaining weight back. I'm not underweight at 5'4 and 139 pounds. Thanks for reading! How do you balance being healthy, tracking, and not going overboard? Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  19. My stricture was severe as well. I needed 6 dilations to fix the problem permanently. Was on liquids for months, but I'm a rare case!! Feel fine now, at 11 months post bypass. Hope you're doing better real soon! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Night shift

I've been on days for the last couple of years and just switched to midnights at the end of January. My revision surgery was Feb 3rd. There are not great food choices eating out in general but even less on nights. You have to really pack your lunch and healthy snacks. I live by myfitnesspal. You can even pack your food at home and enter everything in to make sure the macros are where you want them and adjust accordingly. I also personally think it's easier when your co-workers know the journey you're on so they don't try to temp you with unhealthy choices. I don't understand how people don't tell their co-workers and family what they're going through. They can either support you or get out of your way. I don't think it's any harder working nights then going to days if nights make you happy. It's all about your choices and how dedicated you are.
  21. I plan to have the lap band surgery. It does not seem to be as popular as the gastric sleeve or bypass surgeries but it seems the least invasive to me. Also, I am a late starter since I am 71. I am a food addict and eat often when I am not hungry. I know this surgery will be a tool and I will be making serious changes in my food. I have heart disease and type 2 diabetes. My goal is to correct the diabetes and lessen the work my heart has to do. I have done all steps except the psych evaluation and that is next week. I hope to have my surgery in early April. I do have a reputable surgeon that will do my surgery. I am confident he will help me through this process.
  22. I hope you get answers and assistance. I dont think it is fair to imply you are not invested bc you still plan to eat carbs. I havent had surgery yet but I do know plenty of banded, sleeved and bypassed folks who eat carbs in moderation.

Is weight loss surgery for me?

Well that depends on which surgery you choose.. The sleeve is mostly a food restriction surgery but the bypass and DS have other benefits like metabolic changes; there's plenty of research out there...
  24. Hey guys hope all is well. Now I've just hit the 6 months mark since I started my weight loss journey. It's been an amazing ride that's for sure. I started my highest weight of 322lbs. Today I'm 178lbs; that's a 154lbs GONE in 6 months! Surgery weight was 257lbs so I'm 4 months post surgery as well; 79lbs since surgery day I never thought I would even get to this weight and now I feel great. bought some new clothes and noticed some girls actually taking notice of me these days it's a great feeling!! I have been eating more and trying out different foods lately and I can tolerate more these days; actually went out for lunch the other day for the first time since surgery 😀 BMI is now 24 so I'm officially healthy!!! I'm not quite as strict as I was the first months so I am enjoying trying out new foods to see what I can tolerate as I need to start thinking long term and maintenance! Thank you to everyone on this site for your support and I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have if you're thinking about the RNY bypass surgery. Take care. MIKEY

    4 days post op

My doctor told me that the newer research is showing that protein intake is much less of an issue with a gastric sleeve. With a bypass it removes a part of the system that is responsible for protein absorption so there has to be a real focus on getting enough protein because of that. With a sleeve the area responsible for protein absorption is still there. All the guidelines for protein intake have been based on bypass surgery.
