  1. Don’t weigh yourself for at least a week after surgery - it is often higher (5-10 pounds) than your pre-surgery weight because of the reasons listed above. Even if you can drink liquids easily, don’t let that fool you. First, your stomach is extremely scarred and healing, so it probably can’t tell you that you are overdoing it. Second, just because you can drink more, don’t. There’s a reason why we are given strict limits - it’s not only for our healing stomachs, but to get used to constantly measure/weigh our food so that we stay on track. My sleeve failed for that reason (I had my revision on 3/3) so I’m being extra careful now.
  2. Hi So my appeal was overturned. Yay! What can I expect for revision?  Post op diet the same.  Will I ever eat again. Lots of dumping syndrome?

    Good News Today

UGH the hospital just called to schedule my surgery date and it seems that the doctors office submitted the incorrect information. They did a pre-authorization for the sleeve instead of bypass. They are hoping that they can just update the coding and not have to resubmit everything again. Has anyone had this happen?
  6. Thank you for your advice on the meal plan, everything I eat is wheat and gluten free and the milk I have red cap and I normally will only eat half a banana a day and half an apple pineapple and berries and cherries upset my tummy due to having the bypass the soup is sugar free and low in fat and I don’t like sweet potatoes however I do like swede.
  7. What a ride this journey has been. I never thought I would ever get this far and definitely not this quickly. I have worked so hard though; was super strict on myself from day 1; I feel that is just my nature; it's either 110% or its nothing.. go hard or go home!!! So one morning I just decided this is the day I'm going to start my diet and change my life. I had spent the past 15+ years of my life helping everyone else in my family and ignoring my own health issues mental and physical.. I researched the surgery options and trawled this website for months whilst waiting for my surgery to happen. I found a great doctor and surgeon and he agreed with me that the roux en y bypass was definitely my best chance at success and a future. I took everyone's advice on board but ultimately I knew it would be my choice and my decision to change my life. I also gave up alcohol now nearly 4 years ago.. I started journey at the highest weight of 322LBS with multiple comorbidities and medications keeping me alive. Eventually I went into hospital on October 28th 2019 and had the bypass surgery and I knew there was no turning back; its now on me to prove to everyone including the doubters I could do it!!! Here I am 6 months and 9 days later and this morning I weighed in at 175.5LBS and I'm not sure if my body is even done yet... I've had a few stalls along the way but none longer than 1 week so I've been very lucky; I've stuck to my diet pretty religiously since day one.. I was using protein shakes pretty much for the whole first 5 months with some small things like yoghurt and tuna but the past few weeks I've been adding more carbs and experimenting with real foods and not being so strict but still keeping focused on my weight of course. For the first time in my life I feel normal and I feel happy and excited for the future and I never thought I would get this far 175.5lbs is an amazing effort which equals to 146.5lbs lost gone forever in just over 6 months!!! I hope I can show others it is possible to change your life for the better you just have to be committed, you have to be mentally prepared, you have to be doing this for yourself and nobody else!!! I hope I can be an inspiration to others!!! Love Mikey
  8. OMG ..... If it's the Depo Shot..... STOPPPPPPP!!!!!! Years ago they removed the IUD and started me on the Depo... I gained 50lbs in one month.... it was horrible. Look into the Nuvo Ring. It was the best Birth control EVER.... I tried it all, the Pill (nausea all the time), diaphragm (terrible bladder and yeast infections), Condoms with and without foam (latex-sensitive), IUD (terrible bleeding), the shot (major weight gain, but i didn't bleed), then the Ring. It was the only one that worked for me. Then in my 30ies i had a partial hysterectomy.... OMG it was like the heavens parted and the angels were singing.... At 50 i started menopause and it sucks Ass..... I started gaining weight and couldn't control it, no matter what i did. So i decided enough was enough and paid OOP for a revision to the sleeve. Note: All of the birth control was before i was banded in 2009 SW: 232 LW 143: Removal 2017 at 143. Sleeved 8/28/19 at 173.5, today 131.4

    Pre-Op Diet

I just got out of hospital for a revision to gastric bypass and had no liquids only stage at any point during my pre-op diet (which was, ideally, 3 protein drinks a day and one meal with lean protein, veggies, and good carbs 800-1200 calories a day). The night before surgery I was told to eat a carb-rich meal, like risotto or pasta, which I did. I have to say I’ve had no adverse effects - I was drinking water an hour after I got out of surgery (and have been doing 1200mL a day since), have been off pain killers since the first day, and generally feel great and full of energy - even better than my last surgery, so maybe this way of doing things really works.
  10. March 12th for me (it was supposed to be the 5th, but I would have been the last patient for the day - with a late afternoon operation!!! They asked if I wanted the first available for the next week and I agreed. Tomorrow is my pre-op testing. I had my lap band removed in 2015, and I'm having "revision" to bypass. I'm beyond excited, but I worry that something is going to jinx it. One week of two required weeks of liquid pre op diet, and no replacement hormones has made me a bit grumpy to say the least! I remain skeptical until I'm on that OR table, sound asleep! 😛
  11. One of the characteristics of the gastric bypass is that the caloric malabsorption that you have initially which helps with your weight loss that first year, dissipates after a year or two (unfortunately, the nutritional malabsorption persists, so you still need to take your supplements!). So, if you lost all your excess weight within the first year and were stable at, say, 2000 calories per day, after 2-3 years your stability point may only be 16-1800 calories and you have to cut back a bit to compensate. With the VSG, I didn't have that extra bit of malabsorptive help in the losing phase so my loss was maybe a bit slower, but then I didn't have to compensate for its loss as I worked into the maintenance phase. Beyond that, we all have (with any WLS) the tendency to experience portion creep as get more comfortable with our new life, our diets become more varied and we get more casual on tracking things.
  12. Hi everyone, I having a really hard time and I can’t seem to understand why this has happened and how to shift the weight. i am nearly 3 years post op and I have gained nearly 4 stone in the last 1.5 years, my portion size has stayed the same I eat my protein I take my vitamins I exercise I work almost 24/7 as a care assistant. The only thing I would say I do wrong is I don’t allow enough time for meals I eat the correct foods just don’t allow the time that I should for meal times. I also eat my fruit and veggies, and sleep perfectly fine, I’m just soo confused and don’t understand why the weight isn’t coming off! I have spoken to my surgeon and my gastric doctors and they just tell me to exercise and allow more time for meals I have started to allow more time and already exercise 4 times a week. Advise anyone?

    Clothes?

I kept a few big clothes, ones that I liked, so I could do a before and after comparison after I lost all the weight. Joke was on me though, as I needed a more than a few of those items when I gained back about 50 pounds. This time around (I just had revision surgery), I’m going to toss or donate them, since there’s no stronger motivation to stay on track than having to buy new bigger clothes once again!

8 days Post op And I WANT PEANUT BUTTER

I was going to suggest PB2 as well, but I will say this too - cravings can drive anyone crazy, but giving into them now, so early in the game, will make it that much harder to resist later on. I say this as someone who just got out of a gastric bypass revision for a failed sleeve which failed mostly because I caved to my addictions (chocolate specifically) which lead to falling off the wagon entirely.

    Barrett's Esophagus and Gastric Bypass

Yes I had to go without the PPI when I did my 2nd bravo test. Do you have the sleeve? I ask because when I had to go without my dexilant for two weeks, I was expecting my reflux didn't worsen but it didnt. Do you know why? Because bypass patients shouldn't take extended release meds. Dexilant is an ER medication. ER meds won't hurt a patient, they just offer little to no benefit because by the time the medine is released, its already been digested. Please let me know what your Demeester score is. Make sure to ask your doctor because this will give you an idea of how severe your reflux is. A normal score is 14.72 or below. Mine was 84.4.

I was ALWAYS the one turning down the thermostat until I got a bypass and now I freeze all the time. Since you are eating so few calories your body is trying to conserve energy by not producing a lot of body heat. My BP peaked the day after my surgery, but after a week was running where it used to. Walk as much as you can, the exercise will help bring your BP down. Hang in there, everything will get easier!

  18. I don’t view it as an issue of me being female or for cosmetic reasons but as a final step in the journey and feeling comfortable in my own skin. Something that I’ve never really had before. I have no goal to do this for anyone. Except maybe myself. Likely this will sound weird and I don’t usually discuss it, but I’ve never sought attention as a female human being, I’ve just been someone who existed, who survived despite things. And still continue to struggle with lifelong chronic illness and disability and living on the autism spectrum. My health is in a decline. I don’t have anything to spend money on except necessities, and my mother and our shared living expenses. When we moved states it was the best possible situation. I don’t really have anything except the skin I am in and I guess I want to feel like I own it and I’m comfortable in it. And can fix something while there are many things that I can do nothing about. Part of why I fought like hell to get gastric bypass surgery and to finally have the tool to battle my weight, people vacation for seven days and it can cost in the thousands and honestly I’ve not been on one real vacation in my life. I’ve always scrapped together every penny I did and didn’t have to spend on my sister and her children for holidays and birthdays and for the rare few friends I thought were like family who ultimately wrote me out of their lives ... im not sure I’ve done just one thing for me. My gut feels like this is a lot of money. But my gut also feels like I want to complete the journey. My gut also says people go on vacations and spend more money. I guess this is a vacation with a bonus (and a side of pain ... but that aspect I’m already familiar with anyway) I need to familiarize myself with the procedures. I’m on the fence about augmentation. Only if it could help With the sagging skin and bras/clothing fitting better. this is the website: https://hospitalbc.com/plastic-surgery/

I’m day one post op on a gastric bypass revision, but so far not feeling the temperature shift yet (I know it’s pretty common).
  21. It sounds like someone in the surgeons office coded things wrong, and they are evaluating it as a weight loss revision rather than as complication revision

    Sleeve vs C-section

I have had C Section, Hysterectomy (davinci robotic), and now I am having Bypass. My sugeon does all his WLS robotically, if this applies to you will have 5 small incisions on your belly very similar to a hysterectomy done robotically. *old fashion way of WLS was to cut you open and stitch you up. A C Section unlike this, is a large incision in the lower abs where they cut your abdominal muscles, to pull a baby out. The pain/discomfort you experienced from C Section is more on the incision and muscle being cut which is numbed by alot of the times by an epideral. When you have the WLS done robotically the 5 incision are approx 1cm long. The discomfort your going feel is from the actual inside of your body ie: stomach sutures and gas they pump in your body. Your recovery will be alot quicker than that of a CSection. My surgeon said that if you work a desk job you can go back to work 1 week later with weight lifting restrictions.

    The Maintenance Thread

with bypass, there's also the ending of malabsorption around the year 2 mark. also, once you gain weight it is REALLY tough to take it off, even after you return to your pre-gain habits. The difference between maintaining a weight of 140 vs a weight of 150 is about 50 calories a day. Which is like - a peach. Or half a Light & Fit yogurt. So if you do some heavy eating over the holidays and gain five pounds, you really have to go on a strict diet rather than just revert to the way you were eating before you gained the five pounds. Else at a 50-calorie deficit a day, it would take you 70 days to lose one pound. So almost a year to lose five pounds. The trick is to pretty much never let yourself gain weight. Yes - there are people who manage to defend their lowest weight, but an awful lot of us have "bounce back" weight... (it didn't seem to work this way when I weighed almost 400 lbs, but boy, it sure does now...) p.s. you are talking 15-20-30-40 lbs. I would say those last two numbers definitely ARE due to not being vigilant. But it is SUPER common to have a 10-20 lb bounce back after hitting your lowest weight. There are people who don't, but they seem to be in the minority.

I'm so mad - revision denial

Insurance was a major hurdle when I had my sleeve, but it was approved very quickly when I needed a revision due to GERD. I had already had a motility study, a pH study, and endoscopy done by the time I applied though.
  25. Just found out that I was denied revision due to GERD, the day before pre surgical testing tomorrow! I'm sooooo angry!! 6 weeks, I've waited and this is what they do!!?
