    Food!

My surgery was April 7th, 2009... My highest weight 320, lowest 160, current 200-195... What I can say is I am now HEALTHY and that is way more important than a number... However I am trying to loose about 20ish pounds I've gained since changing my profession to truck driver.
  2. I would hate to think that you are looking for the easy way out by not exercising. The exercise is key for many reasaons including tightening your skin as you lose fat. To answer your question, I lost my first 35 lbs with no exercise. I was at a stand still after that until I started working out and the rest started to come off. It goes in spurts so I cen get frustrated pretty easy. Just when I think working out doesn't work, the next day the scale goes down. You just have to stick with it. I understand the not wanting to work out thing because I was that way. I hated the gym because I was the biggest there but now, I'm the one the staff brings new clients past to show them how it works! Little do they know they know it was also the band!

    Some advice please

Sound like the tubing disconected from the band and the band is deflatting?? I've been re-banded due to a faulty tube that kinked and produced a hole in the kink. Once I knew I had a problem I wanted the problem solved, even if it ment re-banding. It's good to know your doctor is not charging you. Crap happens I'm proud of you being able to loose and diet with a problem tube/band. Cheers and Hugs to you Ruth

    Skin Prep

I went for the skin removal consult and the down time was to long and to costly. I found out about body Wraps and tried them. I am so glad I did too. No surgery in my future. I have went from a size 12 to a easy 8 now. I still have a little to go to be totally flat in the stomach but it won't be long

    Hair Loss

The hair loss started around 3.5 - 4 months out for me and it's still happening, though it's getting to be in smaller amounts. I have thin hair and not much of it so it's been a bit of a drag for me and I'll be very happy to see it even out again. I'd NOT trade the hair for the 85lbs I've lost. My surgeon gives a handout that says we should expect to loose hair, nothing will stop it if that's your body's reaction and there's no way to avoid it. I think their hidden message is don't waste money on fancy supplements or hair treatment systems. From what I've read, its a physiological response to drastic calorie reduction and rapid weight loss. The body looks for things to shut down to conserve energy and hair growth is something the body considers non-necessary for sustaining life. As the body adjusts to the weight loss and calorie intake, it will turn hair growth back on. I do see a bit of new short hair but I'll happy to see it thicken up again. Meanwhile, I'm wearing it shorter and layered for a little volume, wearing hats in the sun and keeping a scalp sunscreen applied.
  6. I think I'll look better (although with more wrinkles and lots of saggy skin!), but when my mom had her gastric bypass, it was really weird. At 53 she had virtually no wrinkles, but she was 150 lbs overweight! Now that she's about 130 lbs, she's had a couple of face lifts and other various plastic surgeries to get rid of wrinkles. It's not that she's vain, but that instead of always looking younger than her age, she looked older! The really funny part of it to me is that people always asked me if I even recognized my mom since she'd lost so much weight (she was overweight for most of my life, expect for short times when any given diet was successful). The truth is that now when I look at pictures from when she was heavy, that's who I don't recognize! To me, how she looks now is how I always saw her, even when it wasn't how she really looked. I think that looking and being healthy (and then dressing the part!) always looks better than being overweight.
  7. A year later for all of us sometime this month! How's it been? What have you learned? What are your hopes for the next year? Victories? Disappointments? Regrets? Praises? I'll start. Getting the band was the best thing I've ever done for myself. My only regret is that I didn't do this sooner. I hope next year sees me losing the rest of my weight and at goal. I hope my skin snaps back more. I feel strong, healthy, and normal-sized! I have more energy and no more leg, knee, and feet pain. I've learned that I still don't know how to eat slowly (and regurgitated food doesn't taste very good). I've also learned that steak doesn't really taste that good when eaten in really small bites. I've found that I like exercising and the more I do it, the more I want to do it. Also, I'm not afraid of airplane seats in coach anymore. I wish I could find the correct balance between too tight and not tight enough. What else do you have? Please share!

What is the next steps when you reach your goal?

Nothing happens, pretty much. There's not some ray of light that comes from the heavens and music playing in the background.... you just wake up one day and while on the scales you've reached your goal (often times you pass it) Decisions have to be made at that time...but not quickly. Really take your time to review the past and present. Continue making good (or better) choices with food and your relationship with food. If a week or so goes by and you lose another pound or so....is that okay? If so, keep working it! But if you lose a pound or so and it's not okay...then adjust what you eat. Perhaps increase your calories a bit. Or, do what I did and go in for an adjustment. It may take a few adjustments to stop weightloss. It took me 2. But I'm still loosing. My goal was 150. When I passed it, I thought I'd keep going...I was on a roll afterall. Then 140 was my NEW goal. I seemed to stay around there +/- 3 pounds....for well over 6 months. But now I'm loosing again. I'm down to 132 and am looking a little sickly. But I just remember to eat and eat often and continue to make better choices than the past. Oh, diet? I never dieted. I just ate LESS and made better choices of cooking more than dining out. And for me (and many others) that works. But some find they have to not only restrict the amount of food (the band) but what kind of food they eat (dieting). I've just tried to find a sense of balance between good foods and knowing when it's okay to eat dessert or whatever. Hope this helps.
  9. I started this journey at 245. I am now 155 and 5 pounds from what I thought would be my dream weight. I had a closet full of clothes that I JUST WANTED TO GET INTO again... that was my focus and goal. I was happy at that size, I felt healthy etc... (all thoughts I had prior to surgery and thus the determination to get surgery) All those clothes were size 14's and 16's. I am now wearing a 12 and can squeeze into 10's. I think if I loose anymore weight, I will be too thin. If I were to loose another 10 to 15 pounds I would honestly look sick. Does anyone else have any thoughts on WEIGHT and scale numbers? With the whole Keirsty Alley announcement, and dealing with my own perception, I am confused. Oprah says she weighs 150. Her goal weight. I weigh 155 and am much smaller then she is. We are both 5'4 to 5'5. Is it possible my bones actually weighs more? My organs? What?! I remember telling my doctor I just wanted to get to 150 to get into my size 14/16's and his reply was no, size 8. I remember thinking he was off his rocker at the time, and I still think so today. I would be too thin and feel frail all the time. My sister is a size 2, and she was wearing 18/20's when she had her surgery (she had RNY) and she is TOO thin. But with her surgery, she will gain back a little. (hopfully) Any thoughts anyone?

Weight loss update and advice needed!

Hello HK!! Good job on your weight loss! Truly an inspiration. I would think that you have lost enough weight to schedule a consultation with a plastic surgeon. Only he/she can tell you if you could have PS done now or if you should wait. It all depends on your fat and skin distribution and really what your goals are. As far as lipodissolve goes, I can't imagine any plastic surgeon worthy of the title MD recommending that. It is not FDA approved (though the facilities that perform it will tell you it is). I did some research on this recently (a news story piqued my interest), and the results can be devastating. Perhaps it was only the providers that I saw on the story and online, but I did not run across anything positive about the procedure. Hope this info helps, best wishes in whatever you decide!!!
  11. Ok...here goes: My sleep study: I arrived at the center at about 7pm. After cleaning my skin in different places with alcohol and pumice, the "sleep technician" hooked me up to a lot of electrodes (a couple on each leg, a band around my stomach and chest, several electrodes stuck to my chin and around my eyes and about 6 stuck to my head). The electrodes were connected to wires that were hooked up to a monitor. At about 10:30, I went to bed. There's a video camera in the room watching your every move and you are wired for sound (they want to see if you're snooring!) I got up at 5am, they disconnected my wires, I took a shower and went home... The psych eval was easy! First I took a written test of about 120 questions. I just had to answer True False or SOmetimes...they were questions like..."do you ever think of killing yourself?", "Have you ever taken someone elses medications?" Stuff like that. Then I sat and spoke with the psychologist for about 1 1/2 hours. She asked about my weight loss efforts, my family life growing up and about my family situation now. She also asked about my support at home, etc. I hope this helps! If you have specific questions, I'd be glad to try to answer! Marsha

    Will I ever get restriction?

I too just called my Doctor's office to schedule my 4th fill. I was banded 5 months ago and I have yet to feel any restriction. Do not cancel your appointment, you will eventually get that restriction that we all crave. My doc is very conservitive and when I hear of some people who actually had a partial fill during surgery I get soooooo jealous, but it's an individual thing so I am holding my head up high and be glad that even though I am loosing s l o w l y at least I have not gained anything since being banded.
  14. I had surgery 9/19. Close to six weeks post op..lost 39 lbs incl pre op diet. I worry about meeting someone in the future and having loose skin and being embarrassed to become intimate. I don't know how I will look when the weight really starts to drop but I am a bit worried about that.

    Women Only! Very Personal!

Yours is not a unique situation, around here they refer to the condition as a FUPA----Fatty Upper Pubic Area, and it is quite common. It loses fat about the same as other areas that you cannot exercise a muscle underneath to tone. Slower, but as you shrink, it will too....some. I lost the bulk of my weight and saw a plastic surgeon---because the vast majority of my weight was in my stomach, and a TT was a dire necessity. At that time, he said he would also do what is called a Mons Lift. When they make the incision to pull the upper stomach down, they make it where they can lipo the pubic mound and pull it up as well. If need be, they often laser hair removal prior to the surgery. I was astounded at the difference it made! My suggestion to you, is to seriously work your band and lose the weight in a healthy fashion, so your body keeps up with the weight loss, and you don't get that droopy skin look. If it is causing you problems now, be it physical, or emotional, bring it up with your Dr. Have it documented. For instance if you get a UTI, ask if it could be affected by the excess skin and fat in the area. Anytime you see the Dr, for anything that is at all weight related, skin rashes under your breasts or pannus (stomach apron) have the Dr. look at it, and document it. This way down the road, if at all possible insurance might cover the surgery. If you wait until you are ready for the surgery, they seldom do. If it is a long term documented health issue, they often will cover.....my TT, lipo, and mons lift was all covered. Til then, it seems your DH loves you......and it is time to learn to love yourself. Maybe instead of concentrating on how it looks or how fat you feel it is.....maybe concentrate on making the sexual encounter GREAT for both of you. That will matter to him much more than if you have a little extra cushion!!! Trust me, I bet this worries you much more than it does him!!! Kat

    Women Only! Very Personal!

Thank you both so much. I needed to know that others have this prob, and there is acually a term for it. I know he loves me and I need to start working on my self esteem. It seems to be getting worse. Since I have been going through the 6 month diet I haven't lost but 5 lbs. I do good for a week or so then I start thinking that I will never be able to enjoy my foods again and I start to binge and gain it back. My husband has lost 45lbs and I have lost 5, this makes me angry at him and I know that this is stupid. I am really angry at myself. I have some problems that I need to work on. I am very lucky to have him. We were high school sweethearts and have been together almost 11 yrs. He must be thinking I am loosing it. I have had mood swings like crazy latley. This 6 month wait is just too long. Getting this surgery is all I can think about. I hope I can go back to being my old self once I have a date. I go to the nutritionist Tuesday and to my last dr apt for the 6 month Wednesday, I have already seen the psychiatrist. So I am hoping for 4 to 6 weeks. Wish me luck. I will try to stop ranting now. Thanks

  19. That 3 week stall is a PITA for sure! You are doing everything right and the weight will start coming off again. Look for the NSVs when you hit stalls. My experience has been that I lose inches when I am not losing pounds. You lose weight, then your body has to adjust things before you will lose more. Two weeks ago, I was bouncing up and down the same 5 pounds, but my pants got so loose they fell off. Now I'm losing between half and one pound a day again. It WILL happen and the stall WILL break.

    Avenue 20% off coupon

That's how it always work. Don't you love it once you have paid for your items at the register and they have bagged up your stuff and hand you your receipt, then they give you coupons. You need the coupons for the stuff you just bought. Duhhh I can't wait to get some baggy jeans. It is definately better to be to loose then too tight. Keep up the good work. Catherines also gives you a 25% off coupon. Of course I just bought my coat from them but I did have a perk card, 20% off coupon and it was on sale. I made out like a bandit on that one.

    Port moving?

Port should not move unless it comes loose. If it seems to move around as you press beside it, call your doctor!

    Jump on the Goal Train

Well I never set any specific goals but I have started to exercise. I just finished my first full week of going to curves and working out for 30 minutes, 5 days in a row. That in itself is a huge accomplishment for me. I have never ... ever... started a workout program before let alone do it for 5 days in a row. I am looking forward to continuing it and being able to adding more types of exercise into my routine. I also have finally put away a pair of jeans to save as my before pants. I put them on today and they had gotten so big that i felt like I had clown pants on. I finally had to go and change. I have gone from wearing a loose 34 to a snug 28/30 in pants and in shirts I have gone from a snug 32 to a loose 30. Everyone here is doing so well. I love to come and read about everyones accomplishments. Keep up the good work everyone!!!:clap2:

    One thing I have noticed

I can spot someone in public who has had gastric bypass. They always look tired, anemic, have large calves and very saggy skin on their arms and neck. Maybe I'm nuts but I swear I see it all the time! I'm not bashing anyone who choses bypass, just noting my observations.
  24. Definitely, it is normal. Like others have said, you are only taking in liquids, so your body isn't producing much solid waste right now. If you are getting in all of your liquids, then your stools will most likely be pretty loose as well.

Help me I'm eating and I cannot stop!!

First - get rid of all the unhealthy foods in your house. If your husband and son want to eat them - let them go out. Buy only lite whole wheat bread, I can't believe it's not butter spray, fresh fruits or those no sugar added 1/2 cup fruit cups, whole grain, low sugar cereals, skim milk, and if you like cheese and yogurt (I hate them and can hardly type the words) - then buy the low fat/sugar kind, some lite Soups (Progresso makes good ones), some whole grain Pasta (if you can eat it), egg beaters, tuna fish, etc.. Start with a certain number of calories you want to do. Maybe start with 1500. Then figure out how to get those 1500 with 3 meals and two Snacks. Write down your food for the day that fits in those calories - one day you might have the Cereal, skim milk for Breakfast, the next day egg beaters and a slice of lite whole wheat toast with low sugar jelly and for dinner maybe some chicken with fat free gravy. I buy rotissiere chickens and remove the skins. And chop up the chicken and add some bbq sauce or fat free gravy. Add some veggies. Maybe have a rice cake with some Peanut Butter for a snack or some string cheese. And of course, drink your Water and get some exercise. Start with walking. Go to a mall without your wallet and just walk around. These are just some suggestions. Once you get started it will get easier. Getting started is the hard part. Good luck.
