Pregnant-does OB have to know about WLS?

My own sister doesn't know I've had WLS. But all my Dr's do. I think it's important that your OB know so they can make sure baby is getting everything it needs to grow. My OB has been awesome! He knows I can't eat 2000 calories a day unless I ate all processed crap food. He is ok with my lower calories and feels like my healthy food choices are great for baby. He is also doing a modified gestational diabetes test for me as I wouldn't be able to tolerate the glucose drink. I haven't needed to see a specialist or anything else because of my WLS. I'm 25 weeks and baby is doing great! She is right on target growth wise and I'm up 8 lbs. My goal is to only gain another 5 - 7 until delivery. Again my OB is fine with this. Good luck!! When are you due?

Is This Rate Of Weight Loss Normal For A Guy?

That must be another guy thing - I was pushing 900-1000 calories within a couple of weeks, though I was able to move some semi-real foods at that time and not just liquids (doc was adding veg to the diet at the 10 day mark because protein consumption was more than adequate at 90g.)

    Important Question

Well, that's 7,000 extra calories in 2 days....the food must have been REALLY, REALLY good and REALLY, REALLY rich. Seriously, a portion of that is Water being held by your body. You had no control over the preparation of any of the food that you ate all weekend. Likely there was more salt that you use at home. Just drink your water as usual, get what exercise you can (maybe free weights or something like that?) and the 2 pounds will be gone in no time. Weight Watchers says you are good if you are within 3 pounds of goal. You did fine! You just have to rein it in and see what happens. I'm predicting the 2 pounds will be gone by Wednesday or Thursday.

    I am so tired!!!

I believe it's perfectly normal, in most instances. Your body is going through physical changes, surgery, lower calories, etc. Not to mention the head games that we are dealing with, when it comes to food. It's exhausting just thinking about. If things are really bad, it probably wouldn't hurt to have blood work to see where you stand. In case you are lacking something. I was very tired, when I was living on 800 calories. Once, I was able to up the calories, I felt alot better! Take care. Shawn
  7. Hi sorry you had to hear that from your surgeon that was just unnecessary. MFP is pretty good and I think your diet is great overall. It's similar to what I eat actually. But we all go through what's going on moments. Sometimes our body needs more variety or it gets in a pattern of holding on to the weight. At Least that's what I'm telling myself to stay positive. ???? The Lentil soup might have a lot of Protein but I'm not sure about the carb content, might be high. Also, the same with vegetable soup high carbs. As far as fruits I had to switch up from Raspberries and Blueberries to Strawberries and small plums because my body wasn't digesting them properly after a while. I try to stay away from apples most of the time...high in sugar. Another option for fruit is kiwi and/or a 1/2 small blood orange but again in moderation. For yogurt I like the Yoplait 100 and choboni 100. For vegetables just not starchy vegetables corn or potatoes. Also if you are exercising, try getting in adequate calories if possible. It will turn around soon.

3 weeks and 3 days post op STALL?

I would start recording what you are eating. Just to make sure you are not over 800 calories. It is easy to graze and take in more than you think. You need to use all your room for Protein for awhile so avoid cakes and Cookies. Also high sugar food just turns to liquid and slips right through your stomach. It does not keep you full.
  9. Hi Guys, On some posts I see people who have been banded speaking about counting calories, eating nonfat or lowfat. I'm a little confused. I am in the pre-op process and wondered this; if I am to eat protein first, then veggie, then good carbs if space permits, do I need to restrict fats? I have lost weight eating Atkins style, i.e. bacon, chicken salad, fish w/dill sauce etc. The fats always make it more palatable for me. I absolutely cannot eat a salad with fat free dressing. If we are being restricted as to the amount we are eating, can't we incorporate fats into our diets? Marieze

    Scared

You definately need to plan ahead but it is doable. I personally use premier Protein ready made shakes. They have 30 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar and are 160 calories. They will fit nicely into a lunch box and are a great source of protein when you are starting out. For me, I lived on Greek yogurt, 1% cottage cheese and Protein Shakes for nearly the first 4 weeks. I still eat those items daily for Breakfast and lunch. They are great protein and fill you up. I also added fresh fruit to this line up at 4 weeks. Strawberries and watermelon, apples....you name it. Also I leveraged Protein Bars, 1 oz portions of cheeses and 1 oz. portions of nuts.

    Hit the fast forward button!

Hi Kimberly, I am right there in the same situation as you are, I am counting calories, eating right, drinking a lot of liquid, walking at least an hour a day and still stuck in that same number on the scale as I was at the end of first week!! so frustrating. Looks like we had the surgery around the same time, just keep working at it and it will all come together for us soon. I am hoping after my first fill in ten days the number will start moving faster. Hang in there.

    Hit the fast forward button!

I have to agree on the calorie thing. Your body may think its starving, give it more fuel. It's holding on for dear life.
  13. OK…let me dispense with the rationalization. I understand the many pros, cons, limitation and issues with caffeine. I am will to submit to vast majority of good ole’ common sense items with being banded, but I want my caffeine fix…I don’t drink coffee, tea lacks the punch and banders can’t really deal with carbonation which kills Red Bull, RockStar and almost all the other energy drinks. So how to get my legal dose a speed when required. I have started using 5 hour energy shots and they seem to fill the gap, non carbonated, only 4 calories and plenty of kick. The site below review over 300 energy drinks  http://energy-drink-ratings.blogspot.com/2008/03/extra-strength-5-hour-energy-drink.html Any other thoughts out there on band friendly energy products…that will not land me in a Turkish prison.

When does the pain go away

I agree that the fatigue from lack of calories is the worst. There's no way I could have gone back to work while I was still on clear liquids. I would have passed out on the floor from weakness!

When does the pain go away

mamareid I know what you are saying it's a catch 22 you need the pain meds but between those and no calories you feel like you are walking around in a fog. My pain lasted a good week! I still 20 days later have discomfort but it's manageable. Now it feels like a muscle strain. When I went to my surgeon 6 days after surgery crying from weekness he told me to add calories by having at least 1 fruit smoothie a day and I drank Kashie GoLean Protein shake made with milk at the advice of another bandster and it made a world of difference, maybe I would have lost more than I have but at least I was living and not the walking dead!!!!
  17. I gained 11 pounds between surgery, IVs and the long flight back home. It actually took until the end of my first month post op to see a drop on the scale. Small fluctuations are normal. Recuperating from major surgery, tracking calories and eating a very restricted diet can give us the expectation to see a consistent drop on the scale. We want immediate results for our hard work and to prove to us that we made the right choice. But it's pretty normal for your weight to fluctuate from day to day, up and down. The only thing that really helps is adding in Water - fiddling with your diet is unnecessary. It's part of the journey that we tell ourselves we're ready for, but stalls, stops and starts (and even tiny gains) are perfectly normal and you will most likely experience them. Put the scale away as much as possible in the beginning. In my opinion, it's necessary to weigh daily in maintenance as it keeps you accountable. But in the early months it just makes you crazy and makes you obsess about what you're eating - a habit you should break in favor of adopting overall healthier habits. Weigh once a week or every few days and you'll like the results better. Good luck and congrats on your new sleeve, ~Cheri

Help Me Get "back On The Horse" Please!

Congrats on the babies!! Remember the 30-30-30 rule? No drinking 30 mins before 30 mins after and should take u about half hour to eat your meal.NO DRINKING DURING MEALS! This causes your food to pass fast threw the band taking more food to get that full feeling. You should also be eating about a cup of food at a time. Count calories! And measure your food portions. I use my firnesspal sometimes you arent aware of how much you intake a day when you see it it makes a difference. Everyone is different aim for 60-90 grams of Protein a day Start off with 3 meals a day and 2 Snacks drinks lots and lots of Water during the day but remember the 30-30-30 rule! Stay away from empty calorie drinks they add up quick. Exercise half hour a day atleast. My fitness pal tells me i need to burn 3500 calories a week to lose 2 pounds. Finally dont get discouraged and just keep going full force forward. I gained 35 of the 40 pound i lost after i became pregnant after 2 years of no fills i had my first one in april of this year and i have lost 36 pounds since april. Im at 5.75 in a 10cc band and i have another fill coming up in august. Keep your head up and good luck.

Losing the Battle of right and wrong!!!

I run about a 1000 calorie defecit per day, and haven't lost anything in one month. I have had a lot of sugar free chocolate cravings, but I account for the calories. I am getting frustrated....a month of doing everything right and averaging 1200 calories a day, and no net weight loss!!!!!!!

    how many calories for men

I consume about 1,500 a day and am dropping 3 - 5 pounds a week. It all depends on how active you are as well as your age and weight. I have a Bodybugg and it makes it a lot easier to know what needs to be done. It tells me how many calories I am burning and I can either work harder or eat less.
  22. Hey guys out there how many calories is the best range for steady weight loss. I ve seen it posted on the nutrition section but mostly women were posting their calorie counts but I believe men eat a different amount of calories. I just feel I'm just not eating the right amt of calories.
  23. Which Polar HRM would you recommend? I am thinking about the FT40 or the FT7, but am open to suggestions. I work out 4 days a week - zumba, HIIT, Body Pump, Warrior Workout, Step My goal is that I would like to know how many calories I am trying burning when I work out. I am ONLY interested in workout calories burned, not necessarily calories burned for the day (steps taken, et cetera)
  24. I am allergic to the whey as well and can't stomach most of the milk/dairy products. After enough pain, and I am 6 months out, I finally said enough is enough and a week ago I bought Jarrows Organic Brown Rice vanilla flavored Protein powder for $9.99 (2 Tablespoons have 11 grams of protein 29 servings). Sometimes I double it, making 22 grams of protein. I use my tiny blender and it gets pretty thick so I make it like 4-5 ounces. I also bought Now Sports Egg plain flavored protein powder which is a high quality protein for $15.00 (2ounces or a scoop has 16 grams of protein and 27 servings). The one I bought is plain at 16 grams of protein for a scoop. There is a vanilla crème flavored one that has a bit more protein to the scoop. I wish I had done this sooner. I am no longer having the stomach distress since I switched from whey and other milk protein shakes and I actually feel better like the nutrition is finally reaching my cells. Now, I aspire to eat like Dee_1111 getting my protein mostly from foods, and good food at that! But for some reason even after being 6 months out I am only taking in approx. 500 calories ( just get too full). I am hoping now though with my recent switch and reduced stomach distress, that this will help me boost my calories up to 800, and only use my alternative protein powders to help me reach my protein and nutritional goals. I ordered my protein powders from Piping Rock online. Hope this helps!!!

    What's your energy level like?

I am almost 2 weeks post op. My energy level is better than it was before the surgery. I started going out window shopping at 5 days post op. I did get weak in the store and feel like I was going to pass out. But, i had been out for about 2 hours. The next day I went out again for about 4 hours. I felt better, but was tired when I was done. On the third day out I almost felt like myself again. All of that was on the liquid diet (300-600 calories/day). I was making sure I was getting in my protien shakes (90g protien) everyday. Now that I am on mushies, I still get most of my nutrition from the shakes. I did Zumba for the first time last night. I had plenty of energy to keep up with it. Good luck to you. You can do it!
