  1. I’ve been on purées since I left the hospital, but only eat them once or twice a day (yogurt, hummus, cottage cheese, purred fruits (like for babies/kids). It’s all been going well so far. In the beginning I ate a very specific amount as I didn’t want to hurt my stomach, but I have absentmindedly eaten an entire pot of yogurt (for example) and haven’t had any issues yet, which is kind of disappointing, since I really need to be more attentive to portion size, and am somewhat upset that the foods with sugar in them (yogurt, fruit) are not affecting me negatively, which is one thing I had hoped for by getting bypass. I know i shouldn’t be having any sugar, but here in Paris/Europe there aren’t a lot of high protein foods that don’t have them (or high fat, like hummus). Anyway, once I’m back home I plan to be much more strict about what goes in. I haven’t had foamies but I will say that if you are experiencing small burps or gurgles, that’s also an indication that you’ve had too much. I’ve had that a few times - it doesn’t hurt or seem serious, but it’s a good reminder to slow down and eat less. I tried my first multivitamin yesterday but had some pain/weird feeling about an hour or two later, so I think I’ll wait another day or two before trying again.
  2. I had bypass and a hiatal hernia repair. I think total time was about 3 hours. I was walking as soon as I could get out of bed. I was up to 10,000 steps by day 7. Even so, I developed 3 blood clots in my left leg and had to go on a blood thinner for 3 months. At 6 months, I developed an ulcer, even though I do not drink any alcohol at all, do not drink coffee or any caffeinated drinks or soda, and eat a very clean diet. It just happened. But it is all under control now with omeprazole and I go back in 3 weeks for another scope. Then I will be off the omeprazole, hopefully. Still, I do not regret the surgery at all. My little complications are nothing compared to the life I was literally losing to obesity. WLS was one of the best things I ever did for myself.
  3. Oh and I'm having gastric bypass though instead of sleeve.
  4. Definitely follow your doctor's direction and what your body will tolerate. My doctor and nutritionist prescribe to the 2-2-2 Plan; 2 weeks Full Liquids, 2 weeks Pureed Foods; 2 weeks Soft Foods. My RNY revision surgery was Feb 27 and my first post op appointment was yesterday. I received the green light to transition to Pureed Foods at end of the week. I had Lap Band surgery in 2005, and I know I made some mistakes and took some liberties following the post op diet, paid for it. I am determined this time to follow the program to avoid the pain and discomfort pushing the diet calendar to get to mainstream foods.
  5. Where are you getting it done? I live in Japan so looked around for a lot of international programs that weren’t Mexico and ended up getting my revision surgery in Estonia. I had a great experience there - no liquid pre-op diet, great doctor and staff who came to see me at least twice a day while in hospital, and my scars have been minimal and healing nicely (compared to my first surgery where it took a few weeks for the biggest ones to stops oozing). As this was a revision (and therefore a final) surgery I won’t be looking for any others, but it would be good to know for others searching this site who want some ideas besides North America. in any event, good luck with yours!

Bypass didn't work, 2 surgical issues

Hi Shone, That sounds really discouraging to go through. I am really sorry that you have gone through all that. I never really lost all that I thought that I should. I started at 243 and my lowest weight was around 170. I have since gained back 20 pounds but started weight watchers in October 2018 and have lost 10 of that. It is def a struggle and the surgery is not the magic bullet I hoped it would be. lol I have since heard about a procedure called the ROSE procedure that is like a revision surgery that I could have done, but I think it is only covered if you have gained back a substantial amount of your weight ( I have not) or you have another co-morbidity (I do not) . But it sounds like you could be a candidate for that. You should check it out. All in all, I am happy I had the surgery done. I feel better than before and I no longer have health issues. I do not eat like I should. But I never did, that is why I struggled with my weight in the first place. You are within your rights to seek another opinion. I still do not think that my original surgeon made my stomach small enough. I am still just plugging along like before, waiting to see what might help me in this epic battle with my weight! lol New stuff comes out all the time. Maybe the next thing will be better. Good luck and let me know how you are doing. God bless you. kim
  7. Hi all 🙂 I need to prep for a revision for next week. I have my old “sleeve” paperwork... is it different you think? Surgeons office said 2 weeks liquid but I did not do that last time with my nutritionist. 🤦🏻‍♀️ (who I’ve called and emailed and don’t have time to go see her again). My surgical coordinator is on vacation, so can’t ask him. Process was started 8-10 weeks ago and day before pre surgeon testing, last Thursday, they denied my revision. I appealed it and 48 hours later it was over turned. Thank God. But now I’m behind The eightball with the liquid diet. This GERD and hernia is horrible. All day non stop GERD. Doing double dose of meds per the surgeon for months now. So, here I am. Unsure if I should start vitamins again, good ones etc. I chew on some gummies when I remember (I know, my bad). Unsure if they are going in lap or endo to do revision. I guess I could call and find out. Suggestions? I have protein shakes and broth. Jello and pudding too. Ice pops.
  8. I’m one week post op today and so tired of drinking. I can’t wait to chew on something again. I have my one week follow up tmrw morning With my surgeon and hoping he will put me on full liquids. I was actually hungry yesterday and tried some 1% milk with my protein powder instead of water and I got nauseated, fast heart rate, hot flashes and sweaty. It really scared me but I jumped in here and discovered I was having dumping syndrome symptoms. I loved milk prior to the sleeve and we’re not really supposed to have dumping syndrome like the bypass peeps, allegedly from what I’ve read on the net. So that kinda sucks.

I haven't told anyone about my surgery

I've struggled with my weight my whole life, but most of my family is overweight... I just happened to be bigger than all of them. I never had an eating disorder and I had tried several diets and nothing worked! They had done thyroid testing and it all came back normal. So, after my sister had my niece (who's a year old now) I got serious about my health because I wanted to watch her grow up and my health was only declining so I started to see the bariatric surgeon and followed a 6 month check-in per my insurance. They did that blood test the first month that tests your vitamins and your thyroid and low and behold! I had thyroid issues! -_-" Turns out your insurance only pays for a nominal thyroid test under normal circumstances, but they have to have a thorough one for the bariatric office (supposedly) so they were able to see my thyroid was underactive. I started thyroid meds and did a pre-surgery diet and was so excited that I literally told EVERYONE about the upcoming surgery, because I was actually losing weight and I was proud of myself! I lost 64 pounds prior to my surgery and a lot of people were really surprised that I was still going through with the surgery since I'd been able to lose all that weight without it, but I'm honest and bluntly told anyone who asked that it would take YEARS to do it without surgical intervention and I wanted the help that surgery would provide. I explained to any who asked that the surgery is just a tool to help the weight come off quicker. If I didn't work with it then it wouldn't work to the extend that I want it to and everyone has been really supportive! Likely because a number of my co-workers have had weight loss surgery lol. It's common where I work. My co-workers keep telling me that I'm looking more and more like my sister now, which is a HUGE compliment because she's about seventy pounds lighter than me (and two inches shorter lol). I have a lot more confidence now since I'm 96 pounds lighter in a nine month period. That's damn good imo! However, I can understand why some people keep it a secret. My advice though is, even if you don't tell people PLEASE wear a medical bracelet or necklace! My step-dad's mom had gastric bypass and she was rushed to the hospital and they intubated her not knowing she was a bariatric patient... the tubing went though her stomach and she bled to death. ALWAYS wear a med bracelet or necklace! Your life is important!

Bypass didn't work, 2 surgical issues

Hi, I can see that this was written five years ago but just googled a search to see if there was people the surgery had not worked for and found this. I am wondering how this is going for you all now. Have things turned around? I have had three weight loss surgeries, none of which I would say worked. I first had the band and that was never right. Constantly trying to find the right amount of fluid so that I wasn't vomiting until I have it removed and had the sleeve. I lost some weight with the sleeve and this was okay but go to the point that I started to gain again and rapidly so the surgeon suggested he would do the bypass. I had the bypass 10 months ago and feel like it was never done. I don't have any of the results that people say should occur and had a visit to the hospital to check it was all okay in there. The surgeon says it looks juts like any other bypass he has done. I don't feel that the surgeon has made any kind of mistake and trust that he has a lot of experience but I have no idea why I am not losing weight. In fact if I eat what I want each week I gain weight.
  11. My mom had Gastric Bypass 11 years ago and has had great success! She gained a bit over the years, but is now maintaining at a very healthy weight. I'm so glad to have her as I embark on this journey! Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Gerd & Sleeve

Agreed . My issues with that is... rny has more complications and malnourishment then the sleeve so to revise to bypass is okay.. but what if u have issues after the revision.. we would be stuck we already lost 80 percent to the sleeve .. thoughts?? I was veering to vsg but I am now thinking maybe rny I'm so confused

    Gerd & Sleeve

I'm glad you asked this because I am in the same boat. If I avoid the trigger foods then I don't have heartburn. I'm not sure what I'll end up doing, but I'm leaning towards the sleeve. At least it can still be revised to RNY if necessary.

    My Plastic Surgery Thread

Three months post op TODAY 😁 Happy to report everything is going really well. My breast aug has turned out amazingly! My left breast dropped quickly, and my right was a lot slower. They are just about even now. I'm not sure how much more they will change in the next few months. I hope not much because I am totally infatuated with them 😍 They look pretty darn natural IMO, just firmer and perkier than most 40 yr old breasts would be. My crack area with the delayed healing has made significant progress. I've been spending a lot of time in the hot tub, or in a hot bath to soften and loosen some of the devitalized tissue in the area that was keeping the area from healing. I expect the area to close with a few weeks now. About freaking time. I'll be glad to have that behind me! The rest of my incisions have healed really well. I mostly have just a thin purple line for my LBL scar. It is wider in the areas that had the drains. I expect this to turn white in about a year or two, with maybe just a little remaining redness. Hopefully eventually just a white line. I may need a scar revision for my crack area, but we'll see. My periareola incision for my breast aug are very nicely faded already. I expect them to be almost unnoticeable within 6 months, or less. My lower abdominal swelling still persists, but is improving. I'm less swollen, more days. The upside of swelling was a fuller butt and thighs. Now some of the draping of my thighs returned. They are still a huge improvement from pre plastics, but not perfect. And I officially have no a$$ whatsoever. It's sad. I often wear booty panties, especially under tight fitted dresses. I am seriously considering butt implants at the end of this year. In other news, I turned out to be horrendously allergic to Bio Oil. The burning itching was awful. I'm not just using Lubriderm ans coconut oil. As soon as I'm not in and out of the hot tub all the time I'm going to start silicone tape. I'm not sure how well it will stay with removing panties. etc. multiple times a day though.

    Food Before and After Photos

Depends on the surgery but yes. With VSG you may have a reduction in hunger, strong restriction initially controlling caloric intake per eating session and *pyloric valve remains intact. With RNY you have a smaller stomach attached directly to the intestines so initially you may have reduced hunger but mostly caloric and nutritional malabsorption, *pyloric valve and below is bypassed until the intestines reunited lower in the digestive tract. Duodenal switch/SIPS/etc. You will have a mixture. The anatomy of VSG higher in the digestive tract before a complex rerouting of Intestines lower in the digestive track with a mixture of restrictions & caloric/nutritional malabsorption. *Pyloric valve controls frequency and timing of the emptying of stomach contents into intestines ABSOLUTELY all of these surgeries can be worked around/cheated on by overconsumption of calories/increased frequencies of meals/etc which leads to major regain. Sometimes this stretches the newly revised stomach but for most it's the excess calories long-term that's the real problem. For most people these surgeries are just jumpstarts to better habits or changed lifestyles to maintain the weight ❤

    Vsg or rny and why?

I know this wasn't directed at me, but I don't think it's been answered yet . My RNY took a little over an hour (revisions generally take longer than that, though). I had an easy recovery and very little pain with it.

    Vsg or rny and why?

My surgeon recommends the sleeve to everyone under normal circumstances unless they have GERD. If I had GERD I would have gotten a bypass. No complications, very pleased.
  18. Holy Hell..... found this old picture from before my Lapband in 2009. Found on my friend's FB page. It said post Feb 2010.... But i'm 99.9% sure it was pre op liquid diet..... That would have made me 232# back then..... that jacket was a 3XL...(maybe a 4). I was so sad back then. I really felt at the end of my rope. I'm so happy with the way things turned out. Looked back at some of my post and damn the things i said..... i was one of the "i only lost" posters... I was also still under the delusion that i could make my marriage work. Didn't know it then, but he was cheating.... in so many ways. Since then i had the band placed Nov 2009, looking back now... i really didn't lose a whole lot that first year... like 60#. I lost another 20 the next year..... i hovered at 143-145 for years. I had a TT in March of 2012. 2015/2016 told him i wanted a divorce. Oct. 2016 meet the love of my life. March 2017, my band slipped and had an ER removal. Aug 2017 moved to Mississippi. Feb 2019 started menopause... and the weight really started coming back on.... from 143# removal day to 173.5 .... Found a Dr. that would do a Low BMI revision.... 2.5 years later. 14K OOP.... and worth every cent. Got married Sept. 26, 2019 (one month pre op). Today i weight 131.? It has taken me 10 years to lose 100#s.... Stated at a size 18-20 pants...
  19. Meh, unfortunately inner upper thighs are stubborn as hell. How long were you on liquids/soup after your revision? I find it way harder to recover this time. Ok ok, I'm almost 4 years older now but anyway. I also have to battle way more cravings.

    Vsg or rny and why?

I needed to have a revision after my 11 year old lap band slipped. I thought I wanted a sleeve, but when the surgeon explained about the risk of GERD after a sleeve I went with the RNY, since I had GERD before I got my lap band. The RNY isn't really any more invasive than the sleeve-actually is it theoretically reversible, unlike the sleeve where they remove 80% if your stomach. And the threat of dumping syndrome has aided me in not eating any sugary foods, which I consider to be a plus rather than a minus.
  21. How large/where is your incision? Can you have soup yet? After my revision I dropped more than 10lbs so quickly I looked terrible & I began to have loose skin in my face /neck 😖

    Liquid diet

Just in general ... I’m being revised on 3/18 and was told liquid. I’m doing shakes and jello. just hard going food to liquid is all
  24. I think my surgery was 3 days/two nights in hospital, I’m pretty sure that was the timeline. I had my gallbladder removed at the same time. But my nutrition class had also said at least two nights. I have had some surgeries with major stitches and have them same day but can’t imagine having had gastric bypass surgery and leaving same day but perhaps my case was just different. I had a abdominal drain and catheter for all three days. But due to my chronic illness I unexpectedly was bed bound and couldn’t get up to walk the way most people can post surgery. unless something comes up in surgery then home is usually the best place for recovery. But still seem strange since you’d think they need to allow some time to heal, make sure you are functioning well enough, and check for leaks. I would at least question the doctor about it.

    Dehydrated And Low Blood sugar

@BecomingAnna oh my goodness I was right where you were last week! I had the bypass on February 19. I wasn't getting fluids in, sick of full liquids, feeling dizzy, mouth dry, dark urine and feeling very sorry for myself. I am an hour away from my surgeons office. I called them and let them know I was only getting about 15-20 ounces in a day and they told me to go straight to the ER to get fluids. I go to the ER in my town and doctor there said yes you are dehydrated but IV fluids are not the answer. You need to drink. I was sooooo mad and crying and everything you can imagine. They brought in a bottle of Gatorade zero and I started drinking. I didn't finish it of course while I was there, but since then, that has been my go to drink. I don't know what it is. I'm still not getting enough. My urine is still dark and I sometimes feel like why in the world did I do this. But I'm holding on because I've seen alot of other people say the same thing. I'm believing that it will get better. I would still call your doctor though. Let them know what you're feeling and maybe there is some help they can give you. But do know that you are not alone! Other people may think you are being ridiculous but I don't think so. I'm right there with you. We'll get there!!!
