Hi there! I started eating almonds at 5 weeks post op. I am obsessed with my 100 calorie pack dry roasted almonds. They are the right calories and the right amount! I have my Protein shake for Breakfast, then a bit later my beloved almonds. This has replaced sweets in my life. It's my go to snack! Sent from my iPhone using VST

Is Too Much Fill - a Problem?
terrasmom replied to anonymous_frnw's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
YES, it's a problem, and YES go get it unfilled enough so you can keep nourishment down! What you are doing by allowing this overfill to continue can be very dangerous to your body and it also sets you up to resist weight loss in the future because your body will go into starvation mode on that little nutrition and hoard everything you happen to give it for nourishment. To loose weight you need to eat like any other dieting person, that is 800 to 1000 calories a day. You still have to exercise and diet with the lap band, it just helps you not binge and over-do it. But get yourself unfilled down a little before you kill off your esophagus and worse!! -
LOL! Love that, too! Hysterical! I'm a little over 2 weeks post-op and my stomach, as little as it is, is louder than ever! I wake up to it growling like I'm starving to death, which I'm not! I quickly take my antacid pill and start sucking down a Premier shake-very impatient tummy!! Is this forever or just while on such low calories (still on full liquids until Nov. 1)? I hope once I'm eating real food again instead of shakes, broth/soup and jello/pudding/yogurt, my hungry-hungry (baby!) hippo tummy will simmer down!!

Getting Fill After 18 Months. Nervous
honk replied to tryingagain's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
If you can not eat 3 oz of solid protein you are too tight. If you can't go 4.5 hours between meals (which consist of low fat protein, low fat/cal veggies and some fruit) you may need a fill. I don't eat bread, pasta, rice. Just no worth the calories. -
Today was my first day of food. I tabulated my calories and was at 599 calories. My target should be 800-1000 according to my doctor and nutritionist. I want to stick to a healthy diet, but wonder, should I use real mayo instead of ff? Should I not worry about sugar free drinks? (The drinks would still be healthy of course.) I just don't know! Today I had: 3 oz of tuna w/ mustard and ff mayo 2 Morning Star Chik Nuggets w/ mustard Steamed veggies (like 2 pieces of carrot and 2 pieces of zucchini) 1 Turkey Meatball 3 mini whole wheat crackers w/ egg salad and no... I didn't stick to the "try one food a day" thing.... Um, how do YOU get in 1000 calories??

This is kind of funny because after I swim (1 hour) I am starving! My mother who also swims actually feels less like eating. Shrug. So I always plan to eat afterwards. Not sure if others will disagree (only have had one fill so no restriction) but before I eat I have a drink of water. I then eat my meal. Since I don't have restriction I usually feel like I could eat more (my doctor says 3 oz protein, 1/4 veggie, 1/4 startch). You might want to have a go to snack that after you've eaten and then waited 10 minutes that you can have if you are still ravenously hungry. Here are some thoughts grilled chicken, cheese stick, veggie, fruit. I live alone so I have the option of just not buying foods that I should'nt be eating. A greek yogurt with fruit would also only be about 160 calories which would be better than the cookies. Also how about sugar free pops?

Ok. On days that I work out I usually do 40-50 mins of cardio. If the machines are right I am burning about 300-400 calories. Well the issue is both times this week I have been starved, like to the point that I came home and binged. On crap may I add. Like today I had 3 cookies with frosting at the tune of 455 calories. Don't know why just did. And that was after I had two steak tacos. Just need to figure out how to work around this. HELP any ideas of what you do or don't do that works. Do you eat first or right after or what. Do you eat the extra calories that you burned off or still try to eat whatever you usually do. Thanks

My students said I looked like "death washed over" until about a month after surgery (around the time I started mushies). I think it's normal due to the low amount of calories we intake immediately after surgery.

I had my lap band surgery in October 2005. I initially lost 28 lbs. I have had seven fills since 2005 but I now weigh what I weighed before the surgery. I have cut back to about 1500 calories a day. I can feel more restriction right after a new fill but in a couple of weeks I don't notice the restriced feeling anymore. Has anyone experienced a similiar situation? Thanks JB

I admit that I'm pretty "nuts" for the 100 calorie pack dry roasted almonds They are soooo good and the whole pack is just enough of a portion for me. I really enjoy the crunch part of it too Sent from my iPhone using VST

They do ! You can adjust the total calories daily. Sorry I don't remember how I did it, but as you go threw the process it will give you a choice, and you enter what you want. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful then that ! But go fishing around and you will see how. or ask a member there...

I just signed up for my fitness pal. It's awesome and the bar code thing actually works ! But it keeps telling me I'm not eating enough. Or getting enough calories in. Wish they had a way to customize it for bandsters

The hair loss started around 3.5 - 4 months out for me and it's still happening, though it's getting to be in smaller amounts. I have thin hair and not much of it so it's been a bit of a drag for me and I'll be very happy to see it even out again. I'd NOT trade the hair for the 85lbs I've lost. My surgeon gives a handout that says we should expect to loose hair, nothing will stop it if that's your body's reaction and there's no way to avoid it. I think their hidden message is don't waste money on fancy supplements or hair treatment systems. From what I've read, its a physiological response to drastic calorie reduction and rapid weight loss. The body looks for things to shut down to conserve energy and hair growth is something the body considers non-necessary for sustaining life. As the body adjusts to the weight loss and calorie intake, it will turn hair growth back on. I do see a bit of new short hair but I'll happy to see it thicken up again. Meanwhile, I'm wearing it shorter and layered for a little volume, wearing hats in the sun and keeping a scalp sunscreen applied.

I gave up caffeine for my surgery and never went back to it. Caffeine is a natural diaretic, it dehydrates your body. I spent the first weeks out of the hospital fighting to stay hydated to the point that I wasn't light headed, I sure as heck wasn't about to put something into my body that made me dehydrate!!!!! Then when the doc said I could go back to coffees and stuff, I figured I had already done all the withdrawls of caffeine and just haven't reintroduced it back into my system. I think they do "no alcohol" becasue of the tremdous amount of calories in it!!!!! You can easily drink your entire days calories in 3 drinks, AND don't mention the fact that it slides right past your band and doesn't give you any satisfaction of being full. Also I think alot of mixed drinks have bubbles, and I don't know about eveyone else but buddles are TOTALLY painful, I swore I would never have pop again after being banded, and 3 months post op I just had to taste what I was missing, OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH is all I can say, I spent 2 hours praying that I could just puke the ick up. And even once the bubbles were gone, by a belching contest to beat the band, the residual pain was still there. Long post summed up, I think your body will determine what you give up, once you've spent hours begging your body to please do "Something" with whatever is causing your pain, you will gladly never consum it again. :-)

What?! No Caffeine again... ever???
MerryHearted replied to Sunta's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I haven't, and I drink coffee every day. Our docs say there's no reason why you can't have caffeine. Our main fill doc says "I gave up food, I sure as heck am not giving up caffeine!" She's been banded for 7 yrs with no problems. The thing to do is make sure you don't put lots of sugar or fattening creamers in your coffee. Alcohol you have to be careful of for 2 reasons: the calories in the drink and the extra calories you often consume when you're drinking (e.g. Snacks or you eat more because you are more relaxed). I was told to try and avoid alcohol for those reasons while losing weight, but once in maintenance you can figure out how to work it back in. Plenty of people who are losing still have an occasional drink though. So I'd say take your nutritionist's info with a grain of salt. Watch your calorie intake & you should be fine! -
2 questions for those closer to goal
HeatherO replied to wanabthin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am down to the last 20 myself . . . and I am still consistently losing. It is getting harder however and I find I have to "tweak" things regularly. I will stay on a particular "plan" for a week and if I see that my weight is moving in the right direction, I stay the course. When I start to stall out or don't see movement, I make changes to exercise, calorie intake, Protein intake, food choices, etc to change things up and hopefully make them move again. It seems like keeping my body "guessing" seems to be the best way to peel off the pounds at this point. I also do not keep my calorie intake the same every day to avoid a rut. I have very low calorie days (800-950) mixed with higher calorie days (but never above 1250 calories). I usually do two low, then one high but it is not always the same. At six months out, I have found that I stall at any calorie level if it is always the same. I also can stall if I eat the same foods every day (which is in my nature to do). This works for me, but of course our bodies are all different. I suffered through many plateaus in the beginning, and once I learned how to break them, I turned plateau busting into part of my regular routine . . . and it is working beautifully for now . . . who knows if it will still work the last 5-10 pounds to goal . . . or if it will work when I bypass my original goal and go for the smoking hot goal of 125??? -
Getting ready to Switch from clear liquids to Regular Food
PhotoNut replied to cherg's topic in Website Assistance & Suggestions
Just realized that I missed your question about low carb. Carbs from sugars and flours usually tend to start us on cycles of over-eating that are very hard to break. The only carbs I eat now are in fruits and veggies. Yep, I do avoid breaded foods. Its just empty calories that Id rather use on something that will actually help me feel full longer. Carbs burn up quickly and then the body starts calling for more food. Also, being the dough freak that I am, I just completely stay away from all breads and pastas. Those are my downfall and luckily they are also foods that bandstsers quite frequently have trouble with, so I haven't even tried them. I just tell myself that I can no longer eat that, and I seem to be accepting that. *grins* I also stay away from sugar. I use Splenda but the only thing I ever use it in is iced tea. There is some sugar in canned fruits, but I buy the low sugar varitey and don't drink the juice. -
What is the next steps when you reach your goal?
lapbandtalker replied to melliecat's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Nothing happens, pretty much. There's not some ray of light that comes from the heavens and music playing in the background.... you just wake up one day and while on the scales you've reached your goal (often times you pass it) Decisions have to be made at that time...but not quickly. Really take your time to review the past and present. Continue making good (or better) choices with food and your relationship with food. If a week or so goes by and you lose another pound or so....is that okay? If so, keep working it! But if you lose a pound or so and it's not okay...then adjust what you eat. Perhaps increase your calories a bit. Or, do what I did and go in for an adjustment. It may take a few adjustments to stop weightloss. It took me 2. But I'm still loosing. My goal was 150. When I passed it, I thought I'd keep going...I was on a roll afterall. Then 140 was my NEW goal. I seemed to stay around there +/- 3 pounds....for well over 6 months. But now I'm loosing again. I'm down to 132 and am looking a little sickly. But I just remember to eat and eat often and continue to make better choices than the past. Oh, diet? I never dieted. I just ate LESS and made better choices of cooking more than dining out. And for me (and many others) that works. But some find they have to not only restrict the amount of food (the band) but what kind of food they eat (dieting). I've just tried to find a sense of balance between good foods and knowing when it's okay to eat dessert or whatever. Hope this helps. -
I'm new to banding and just started mushies. I am really watching portion size, but for those of you that KNOW how much you are taking in a day, do you really have to take the time to read everything, count the calories to make sure you are within range? I'm sure stuff you eat over and over you would know, but I'm talking about eating out...etc. OR do you just eat pretty much whatever and cut the portion size way down? If this is what I have to do, whats the best way to count the calories, should I get a scale too? Obviously I NEVER did any of this or else I wouldn't be in this fat boat, so honestly I have no idea what I'm doing....can anyone help?
-
I use thedailyplate.com. I don't actually count anything. I just keep track of what I ate, find the closest match in their database and log it. I let it tell me how many calories I ate, how many were of fat, etc. As the day progresses, I adjust my eating based on what it tells me. For example, if my Protein is low, I have a protein-based dinner. If my fat is too high, I make sure not to eat any more high-fat foods for the rest of the day. It's pretty easy and just by tracking my food and Water intake, I lost 5 lb. and I haven't even got my band yet or have made any real attempt to "diet".

Liquid stage: how many oz. is your protein drink?
MsButterKup23 replied to brittu's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I used the Isopure and it has 8 oz servings per 2 scoops. You can always 1/2 the serving and drink as you can until you work upto what your supposed to drink. Isopure has 50 grams of Protein and 300 calories plus it tastes like chocolate milk. Best of luck to ya! -

skinnygirl replied to skinnygirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yes i got up this morning and gained them both back. Calorie counting was easy, but this lapband is hard. If I eat more than 1/2 cup at each meal i gain. this does not make since to me at all. I get a fill loose then gain this is so discouraging! any help please! advice this is crazy and im mad!!! -
I don't know what size band you have etc...but I can tell you with 100% honesty that once you finally get restriction and hit what they call on here "the sweet spot" (my doc calls it the "green zone") it is a whole new way of life. I have lost over 1/2 of my total loss to date since 5/7 when I FINALLY hit restriction. I won't diet and use sites like the daily plate because I become so darned obsessed with food. That's not why I got the band. I want to be FREE of thinking about it, not over concerned with it, and when I "diet" I think about food all the time. Now I truly go hours. The first night I realized this I was up very late and around 2 am I thought "Wow something's wrong with my stomach. About then it growled and I thought OMG I"m HUNGRY" LOL sounds so silly, doesn't it? But I'd eaten my meal at 8pm and hadn't even thought about food (or a snack) since then. It had been right at 6 hours! I thought "HALLELUJAH! I'm FREE!" LOL and most days that is the way it goes. If I choose filling nutritious foods for my meals I am not hungry for hours. Makes it easy to pass up the bad stuff. Who eats thinking "I want this so I can be hungry again in an hour" ? No one. It'll happen for you and if you are a good dieter and can diet without becoming a raving lunatic like I do, then just watch your calorie intake . Either way, restriction will most likely change things up for you in a big way.

Congratulations!!! I am currently doing my pre op diet for my surgery on May 4th.. Doctor told me to start off this week with two slim fasts and one decent meal of 500 calories or less.
