  1. Today makes 4 weeks out from surgery. Pre-op classes are on the 20th which is 2 weeks before surgery. I'm getting really excited but unsure of whether I have everything I need for after. What do I need to have after surgery other than protein shake and meal replacement shakes?

    Buddy And Mentor

Well I'm going to be 19 in a few weeks. This is going to be the start of my new life.. I know that I am young, but I have always been the big girl.. I am 5'7 and weigh 292 now, So on July 30th I will be sleeved. At first I was going gastric bypass, but my surgeon told me that this was better for a younger person. If anyone one it can be a male/female. I don't care about age or if you are pre op or post op. But I would like to find both a weight loss buddy and a mentor if possible. I live in Connecticut(suckish) Texting is fine though. pleaseeeeeeeeeeee. Love Krissy.

    STILL NOT LOSING WEIGHT!

Let's start with basics. First of all take a deep breath and try to relax. It's only been a week. What are you eating/drinking at this point? (a food log really helps) Are you close to meeting your protein/fluid goals? Have you had had your first BM yet? Are you walking and/or exercising yet? Not everyone experiences big numbers right off the bat, some people are slow and steady losers. If you are following your program, the weight loss will happen.
  4. So I had a question and was curious what your thoughts were on it: As a Firefighter/EMT we cannot always plan our meals exactly. Just the other day I missed what would be my lunch time, because of a actual structure fire. My concern is what is going to happen if I miss my meal and I do heavy physical activity such as fighting a fire or trying to extricate someone from a car accident? Will I pass out or what? Also are there any firefighters or emts out there who have had to deal with this issue? And not the 2 week post op. I'm talking 6 months, 1 year, and so on.

    Esophageal Spasms

I had them for weeks post op due to hiatal hernia repair. I was given reglan, carafate and zantac to help calm down the spasms. I developed acid reflux really bad post op but now I'm 3 months out and I'm not taking any more meds ????????. Best wishes

    Water

It might not always break you out of a stall (I think the kind of food you eat would do that more) but it's always good to try and get in as much water as you can. It helps keep your system clean and can help you lose weight more than you would if you drank less. It also helps your skin elasticity. It's hard to get all the water in the beginning, but it gets easier as your stomach heals and you can tolerate more.
  7. I was sleeved on October 14, 2013, so I'm 3 1/2 weeks post-op. I know I could benefit from having 1 or 2 people who have been there and done that. So HELP! LOL Looking forward to the journey of living a better healthy lifestyle.

    new to this

Welcome to the journey! Bearing in mind that everyone is different, and that I'm less than a week post-op, I can tell you that the hardest part of the entire process was all the fears I let pile up in my head. They nearly undid me. The next to hardest part was the first day after surgery and the spells of nausea I was experiencing, but those were from the pain pump, and everyone was very quick to respond with anti-nausea medication until it was resolved. Everything after that has been a breeze, to be honest with you. Yes, there's some pain, but not near as much as I expected. I'm about 5 days out and sitting in a comfy chair at home, and the only thing that is hurting is my butt from being on it so much. I'm starting to move around more. I was scared at first because I have a drain (I live three hours away form surgeon, so it was a precaution), and I didn't want to mess it up or hurt anything internally, but I'm seeing that I can do everything I need to do and it doesn't cause a problem. I have no pain at my incisions, which are still healing, no pain around the drain, even when I change the bandage. I have some slight achiness at two IV sites, but only when I move or press on those areas. If this surgery is the right thing for you, and you're confident in your choice of surgeon, then sit back and try not to read too many more horror stories. Yes, it is good to be educated about the surgery, have the facts, and be prepared for any curve balls, but once you have the information, don't dwell on it. Cross those bridges if you come to them. Instead, work on filling yourself with the positive prospects of surgery. For me, that's been browsing new clothes online.
  9. Have completed my first appointment, my required support group visit and scheduled my psych eval, sleep study, and next dietician appt. This all happened within 2 weeks. Feeling excited but very nervous!!

In your 5th stage of soft/mushy ..... What cereals (non sugary) were you able to tolerate? I'm almost 4 weeks post op
  11. 2 nights ago I figured it was time to bite the bullet and tell my 7 year old that I am going away for 5 days without him. He cried and cried and cried when I told him mommy is going on a mini vacation with Nana. I didnt tell him about the surgery, and wont until I get home. I still have some time to figure that part out. Only family member that knows (besides my Ryan) Nana (my ex-mother in law out of all people) who is coming with me and has been a major support this whole journey. I haven't even told my own mother. I tried reassuring my son that Nan and me weren't going anywhere fun. There wasn't going to be any amusement rides or beaches. It was strictly a vacation for mommy and Nana to spend some time together as she has been sick and in the hospital recovering from lung complications. He still wasn't happy. What got him okay with the idea was when I told him that I took the whole day off work on Tuesday to take him to his first day of grade 2. I would pick him up at lunch, and pick him up after school. He got shocked and laughed at me when I asked if I could take "Lambie" his favorite stuffie (since birth) with me so I would really be without him. He told me I was silly. To think I could take Lambie away from him was blastomy !!! It broke my heart to see him so upset. I took him on a Mommy and Me vacation 2 weeks ago, where we spend 3 days at the waterpark in the hotel, ordering room service and shopping till we dropped. That still didnt make him okay with anything. Luckily I leave at 5am for the airport when he will still be alseep. Not sure how my hus-friend will the tears when my son wakes up and I am not there. Our bond has been so air tight that being away from each other throws the whole universe off course. As much as I want the surgery, THIS part is what I have been dreading. The 5 days in TJ cant come and go fast enough. ..ii.ll.aa.. (means I love Alex double time) How did you tell your kids that you were going away for a few days without them? & without breaking their tiny hearts.

You've Got To Be Kidding Me!

I chose a female OB with my first baby because I thought it would be better to have a woman. She quit 6 weeks before my due date and I had to change doctors. I am so glad she did. I found a doctor that was 10X better than her because of it and HE was a man. Best wishes!
  13. I'm 24 days post op (sleeve) and in the past week I've started having the worst hip pain at night. If I sleep on my side, that hip will be excruciatingly painful in the morning. Anyone else experience this? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  14. My energy was way down on Tuesday. I walked markedly slower. Later on that night I felt faint. The next day I was bursting with energy. Today I feel sluggish again. No change in my protein/vitamin intake. So weird. I'm one week post op and just wanted to share my experience so far.
  15. How is everyone doing? I'm assuming most the people out there loving their sleeve has moved on from the forum, so I thought I would purposefully come back and post an update. Pain - Non existent.. Excercise - Just got cleared to excercise. Started with a couch 2 5k program yesturday. I loved running before the sleeve. It was hard to hold myself back to running only 60 seconds at a time. Food - I can pretty much eat anything.. But some things just aren't worth it.. Red Meat sits hard and heavy in the stomach.. So I try to limit that. I've only had three throwing up experiences since I got sleeved. And none of them were from food. I switched from Prilosec to Pepcid.. And that was a mistake.. Three times though is all it took for me to figure it out. It also allowed me to get off all antacids.. Vitamins and pills - Still take double chewable multi and double calcium caltrate. B12, BComlex are once a day. Hypertension medicine still once a day, but off the metformin for good now. As for how much I'm eatting... I usually stick with 4 - 5 ounces of protein.. And then will throw about 4 ounces of what else is there (Potatoes, Veggies, Pasta).. Finish all the protein then try to make it thru half of the other stuff until I'm full, but not uncomfortable. Weight loss has been extraordinary.. Had a couple of stalls, but usually the weeks after the stalls the weight just falls off.. I've also noticed the stalls relate more to my sodium and water intake than anything else.. So if I keep drinking my water(Crystal Light Lemonade) and reduce the amount of pasta/potatoes/etc.. It falls right back off fast..

    My body itches?

I live with constant body itching, but it has nothing to do with the procedure. All over itching is (in MY case) a symptom of an inflamed liver. I would recommend that you share this with your Dr on your next appt. I'd also recommend requesting a liver function test (routine blood test). A friend at work had the Lap-Band, and a couple of weeks later, her liver function sky-rocketed! She's okay, but had to go to Baylor to be monitored, and, I guess whatever ticked off her liver just corrected itself. Still, I'd not ignore it. Our liver and kidneys carry the physical traumatic stress post-op. It might just be a little ticked off.
  17. I am about 3 weeks post surgery. Struggling to get started on pureed foods, seems like only liquids go down. Anyway here is my question. I have a really bad chest cold with lots of coughing and congestion. I assume taking liquid Nyquil would be ok to help with the symptoms and help with sleeping. I would ask my surgeon's office but it is a Sunday and I don't want to call the on-call doctor for such a simple question. So thought I would ask you all :-)

    Three weeks out

Hi everyone I lost 9lbs my first week and was moved to puréed foods. I am not eating much but the scale says I have not lost anything. Anyone have this happen? I am starting to become afraid to eat anything Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. I am like 6 weeks post opp . no fill yet but, i feel like i am not doing something wrong. 29 pounds total and only 7 of that in the last 2-3 weeks. what am i doing wrong
  20. Any ideas or advice for post op? Im going to do my shopping this weekend. I need recommendations for the smooth liquids phase. I also need ideas for the best tasting protein supplements.
  21. I had an appointment with my internist today. He was VERY supportive of me having the sleeve procedure. He listed all the ways I would benefit. Don't know why, but it really made it seem real to me that I am going to do this and that I'm definitely doing the right thing. I have all my pre-op appointments scheduled over the next 2 weeks - seems like things are starting to move along very quickly. I have gone from indecision, to trepidation and now all I feel is excited.

    3 month anniversary

I haven't posted in a while and realized it's been 3 months today since my sleeve! Life has been so different since surgery. I was exhaustes all of the time until about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Now I have all kinds of energy. I've been exercising since about week two. I ride my bike or walk. That's the extent of my exercise. I've lost pretty consistently since surgery, averaging 2 pounds a week. I'm eating approximately 800-1000 calories a day and at least 70 grams of protein. I still drink shakes-at least one a day, and sometimes 2. I still struggle to get water in. I'm lucky to get 24 ounces a day. I went from a tight size 18 pants to a loose 14. I even fit in a size 12 last weekend. Everyone tells me how young I look now. I'm not used to all the attention that I get, and it makes me quite uncomfortable. But it's to be expected. I'm so glad I did the surgery, and I'm even happier that hubby did it with me. Btw-he's down to 279 from 364!! HW 241 Pre Surgery Weight 3/1/18: 228 CW 182
  23. Let's hope the food funeral I've been on for the past two weeks hasn't caused me to gain weight! LOL I meet with my surgeon Wednesday to sign consents and get my date. It's so amazing to me that something I've prayed about, wanted, wished for the past two years is finally happening. I had my mother take my measurements this evening. Bust, waist and hips are all 51 1/2......can you say HEART ATTACK waiting to happen???? I think tonight I'm going to list my fears and then I'm going to list what I'm going to look forward to be able to doing. Maybe putting pen to paper will help me process all of this. Leanne

Weight loss stalled after 6 months

Congrats on the weight loss...and yes, stalls are common. I have had three in the last 9 months. I also just have another 10 pounds to go and the doctor said they will be the hardest...just keep doing what you are doing. Throw in more walking, if you can, it helps a lot and make sure you are drinking lots of Water. It will start going again. the good news is you are probably loosing inches now!
