Help! Possibly doing DS rather than Sleeve
Threetimesacharm replied to Adam Kramer's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Yeah ... no. There's absolutely no research to base that categorical statement on. None. Yeah! I personally have had the sleeve and the gastric bypass so I speak from experience! I find that I have very different restriction and feelings towards food. Personally as I said with the sleeve it has less restriction from fats and sugars, this is well known as the GB does. With the sleeve I also could eat more food much sooner than I can now(I had a 36F)Personally I find this to be more effective to keeping weight off. -
Does insurance (UHC) approve experimental surgeries
RickM replied to janedoe92's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The whole experimental/investigational category is a bit of a catch-all for anything the insurance company doesn't want to cover. Some procedures are genuinely investigational in that they are new or novel approaches that aren't well vetted yet (which would include the SIPS/SADI, though that is getting more borderline these days) while others are ones that have been around but never gained traction or acceptance within the US medical community (such as the mini-bypass or the Scopinaro/BPD precursor to the DS, though that one was fairly well accepted in Europe.) Some companies are slower to accept newer procedures than others, even when they have been accepted or vetted by the relevant medical organization such as the ASMBS. 11-12 years ago we fought hard to get coverage from Aetna for my wife's DS with no luck while others got insurance approval for it with no problem. A couple of years later, Medicare started covering the DS, so the experimental/investigational dodge no longer worked for them. OTOH, Aetna started covering the VSG well before Medicare and other insurance companies started covering it. Go figure. Those I know who have gotten reversals on insurance decisions in this direction did so with appeals (usually several, and often to the state regulatory level) and usually had some compelling reason why their preferred procedure (typically the DS in those days) was more appropriate medically for them than the standard offered procedures. Hopefully, your surgeon can convince them with the peer-to-peer review and you can get on with life. Good luck! -
Does insurance (UHC) approve experimental surgeries
RickM replied to janedoe92's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have found a couple around these boards that have gotten insurance coverage for the SIPS/SADI, so it seems that somebody out there is covering it. Perhaps the insurance coordinator in your surgeon's office knows which company(s) may be covering it if your company can't be convinced, though that would probably mean delaying things a while until coverage can be transferred, if such is at all possible. We went the self pay route for my wife's DS as the bypass and bands weren't appropriate for her needs, -
Hi my name is Rebecca and I'm on my way to a healthier life! So I am a 46 year old mother of 4 grown children (amazing children ) I have suffered from bipolar depression, ptsd, anxiety with panic attacks, and borderline personality for many years. As a result I have been on numerous medications that have caused me to gain significant weight, as well as having used food as my "comfort" food... That was the beginning of a life long struggle with weight. This past two years I have had a stroke and a mini stroke, my left knee has been totally replaced twice and is still very unstable so exercise is virtually impossible and my weight reached an all time high of 383lbs! In August I decided to take control and regain my life back.. Starting in September I met with the Bariatric team and have since lost 34bs 4oz and now have a surgery date for January 25th ...I must admit that as excited as I am about my new healthier lifestyle I am also very very nervous and constantly anxious about the "unknown". I have sleep apnea, high blood pressure, Fibromyalgia, and other health issues that can only be improved with the gastric bypass so I have weighed the pros and cons of it all and feel this may be my last chance of ever getting back to the "healthy Rebecca" that I need to be for myself, my husband, my children, and my precious grandson. Hi all. I'm from Mississauga. I just had my doctor referral today. So the journey is just beginning. Don't know if ohip will cover sleeve or bypass for me, and every day, I change my mind about which one I'd prefer. So confused!! Looking forward to knowing you through this journey.

December I think there was a big problem with your surgeon. I was a self pay as well. Banded in April 2009, list some then regained. In March 2010 my surgeon (who couldn't have been more unsupportive if he tried) told me the band was full and I had failed. He told me to consider bypass which I of course couldn't afford. I went to a new surgeon this month since my insurance now covers weight loss surgery. I was set on getting bypass. He checked Fluid in band and it was nowhere near full!! He added another cc to what was in there and it made all the difference. I actually have restriction now! I would strongly encourage you to get a second opinion. And you are not a failure! You're trying to get healthy. Don't give up please.

So I got the results of my EGD and apparently I have a non-erosive form of acid reflux. Also, biopsy showed questionable Barrett's esophagus which means I might have to have the bypass over the sleeve. I'm trying to come to terms with that possibility but my surgeon put me on protonix to help reduce the acid production of my stomach. I've been on a steady diet of ibuprofen due to some uterine issues and my love of spicy foods may not have worked in my favor for that. Hopefully, he can do the sleeve still, I'm still weirded out by the whole rearranging of organs.

Time Between Liquids and Yogurt

Then never mind. Hopefully someone who has had bypass will have more insight. -
My first suggestion would be to google gastric bypass versus lap-band. I just did and there are a ton of articles comparing the two without having to rehash here. Then I would suggest scanning both kinds of forums like this and read about real life stories of people who have both. The down and dirty difference is: Gastric bypass gives faster results but the complication rate is higher and there is more of a chance of nutritional deficiencies. Lap band is slower weight loss but much less in the way of complications and you are able to get your nutrients better. Hope this helps and good luck with whichever method you decide on.

Good evening, Hi everybody, I'm newbie here, currently waiting for revision approval. I'm a Lap Band failure case - Had it in for 11 years (actually loved it - it was a great tool), and got to goal weight after 18 months. I kept it off without much issue, until it eroded into my stomach, and pretty much almost killed me. This was the third issue that I had with the band. Two port infections, lead to port revisions, and one MRSA infection. It was finally removed in 2015, and sadly, now I'm back up to where I was before my banding. I'm currently in my 5th month of 6 monitoring/counseling, for pre-op revision approval for bypass. Unfortunately, I've also since gained 6lbs. since I started that monitoring [during the holidays]. I know that I'm being a bit, "It's my last _______, and I want to enjoy it" . I've followed every class, every appointment, and every health test, but still have not heard back about my "March" surgery date for bypass. I have one more nutrition appointment as required by BCBS, and one more evening 'STRIVE' support counseling meeting that must be done for revision surgeries as per my doctor's office. I'm just panicked that I've been going through all of this, but have not heard anything regarding a yes or no at this point. I'm currently at a BMI of 39.4 with sleep apnea (on CPAP), severe heartburn, failed back fusion surgery, Lupus, Fibromyalgia, and am in LOTS of pain - 100% disabled since 1995, so Medicare is my primary with BCBS of GA secondary. Has anybody gone through the six month pre surgery hoops only to get turned down? I'm just so worried that it's going to be a no go decision. I really appreciate that this page/group is here, and look forward to hearing from y'all! Thanks 🙂

Bypass w/ minor issues
kassandrafernandez@ymail.com posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hey everyone, I had my surgery on 12/15/16 & I am having a very hard time with drinking water and experiencing a lot of dry heaving. I went to the hospital last night they said everything looked normal no strictures. Also I'm having a real hard time catching my breath, I catch myself becoming very much out of breath with small things I do. Like dressing myself. I need help figuring this out Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Stress from surgery can cause your heart to flip into a fib. So can sitting on the couch. Hopefully it behaves. If you're on rate controlling medications, make sure you get those down. If for some reason after surgery you can't take pills, I'd contact your cardiologist for a back up plan medication regimen that can be given IV. Let your surgeon in MX know what it is beforehand. Metoprolol and diltiazem, even amiodorone can be given IV. Best of luck! Also, my mom has dealt with a fib for about 15 years. Had gastric bypass 2 years ago and didn't have any problems with going into a fib in the OR or post op.

Gastric Reflux Post Op... A Survey
LilMissDiva Irene posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am looking for some data regarding GERD and the Rny Gastric Bypass for Post Op's. You can be a virgin stomach or a revision patient, if you are a revision, please reply in the comments as well. I am revising from Sleeve to Bypass because my Surgeon feels it will be best bet to cure my GERD. I have it extremely bad and even if it helped to make it better it would be a relief for me. Thanks in advance! -

revision RNY GB to DS Revision
cjwilson80 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi! I'm new here, I just googled "Weight Loss Surgery Discussion Boards" and this is the first site that popped up. I hope I'm in the right place... I had Open RNY GB in May of 2002. My weight the morning of surgery was 310lbs. I lost over 100 lbs in the first 10 months and got down to my lowest weight of 153lbs about 2 years after surgery. I was feeling fabulous! However, over the years, I was able to maintain at about 170-180lbs consistently, until I gave birth to my son in 2012. After he was born, I wasn't able to lose all of the weight I gained during pregnancy. I was around 200 - 205 lbs at my lowest after he was born. But, due to some other life circumstances and traumatic life experiences that happened to me in 2016, I have gained back over 100lbs and am now sitting at about 268lbs. I'm crushed. In May 2021 I decided to research revisions and found a surgeon in my area (St. Louis, MO) who specializes in revisions and I found out that I am a candidate for a revision to Duodenal Switch. After meeting with a dietician for 6 months, psychologist, primary care physician, etc. I'm finally having my revision next week... April 14, 2022!! I'm so scared and nervous this time around. I don't know what to do or where to go. I wasn't this nervous before my first surgery and I think it's because I didn't have as much to lose back then when I was 21. Now I have a 10 year old son who is everything to me and I'm terrified that if something goes wrong, he won't have a mom. Has anyone else in the forum gone through this and if so, can you please share your experience with me?- 8 replies

RNY GB to DS Revision
Guest replied to cjwilson80's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So...it's about how much of the intestines are bypassed. Also the DS pouch is essentially a sleeve because it's pyloric valve sparing. Read more here https://www.dsfacts.com/comparison-of-ds-and-rny/ -
I have told my immediate family about my upcoming bypass surgery, but not my friends. I really don’t see my best friends that often, but that’s been my fault since they live right here. We do correspond everyday. Even though two women are my best friends, they are the ones who will not keep a secret. I’ve learned the hard way. I’ve been thinking ahead, and I see the following scenario coming up. After I lose a significant amount of weight, I know they will just ask me if I’ve had surgery. I don’t want to lie to them, but I will feel so much guilt if I do. Has anyone run into this situation when people just bluntly ask if you’ve had WLS? HW 275 CW 262 Surgery in December

Considering LapBand....Please help? Thank you!
lisacaron replied to KGOM's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Kelly, The cost can vary between doctors and programs so look up a few in your area, you can even use this site to do that for the lap band or at lapband.com. and ask them what their rates are for an out of pocket surgery. If you have insurance, you could give them a call and ask them what the criteria would be for them to cover the cost of your surgery. The reason my husband and I chose the lap band over gastric sleeve or bypass is because it does not alter your biology. Everything stays where it is. Nothing is cut out, something extra is put in, and it can be used flexibly as needed. Different people require different amounts of restriction or Fluid in their band, what works for me does not necessarily work for my husband or my neighbor. I like that about the band it's tailored to me and for me. I have a family member who had the gastric sleeve, and while he continues to eat things he always ate before and did lose weight, over time he has stretched that sleeve a bit. That happens over time naturally and weight loss stops and even some gain is expected. If habits don't change, weight re-gain is guaranteed. There are people I have read on this blog who have had the sleeve and the bypass only to come back and have the band added to that because of re-gain. With any of the surgeries there are dietary changes and restrictions. You eventually can have all your favorite foods, and yes you will have less of them, but you also will have to change your eating habits and the choices of foods you make regardless of what surgery you opt for. Some are even more restrictive of certain foods, such as fatty foods and sugary foods. Definitely do your research, and check in with a few doctors and groups that do different types of surgery and see how they and their patients feel about it. Most surgeons have support groups that are free to attend and you will get a lot of information there that should help guide your decision. Best of luck to you! Lisa Caron -
Told my MIL- that was a mistake, LOL
BethFromVA replied to tomatogirl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My mom is notorious for saying one thing one time and then flip-flopping on it later on. She suggested surgery to me a couple times in the past, but frankly, the only surgery I knew about was gastric bypass which scared the bejeepers out of me and was a huge NO in my book. However, I know if I told her before the surgery that I am doing it, she would probably start talking against it. It also doesn't help that one of her neighbor friends is a very opinionated nurse. You can do the math from there. Heck, even hubby doesn't know yet, and I just got my surgery date today! I was going to tell him about it last night, but we are still so jet lagged from a trip we got back from on Monday and he was so tired I said I'd tell him today. I wanted to be sure of what I was wanting and getting myself into before I involved anybody else. -
How Many Cc's In Your Band???
bluetigereyes replied to Origflyboy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have a 14cc band. My first fill was 3 weeks ago (when the dr had to revise my port due to it flipping) and he put in 6.5cc. I go in today for a second fill. I dont know how much he is going to put in today, since I can still eat a fair amount and still hungry quite often -
Another disappointed bandster
NJMOMof2 replied to Jennet's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
As a former LapBand person, I truly know the pain involved with getting food stuck! BE sure you get an upper GI. After I had a severe stuck episode and removal of my fluid I had a FULL slip. My entire stomach slipped through the band and it clamped off the bottom of my stomach. There is no words to describe the pain that was. I had the band emergency removed then the gastric sleeve a little over a year later. And I gained the 50lbs I lost back. From experience I can tell you that the sleeve is a more involved recovery but a MUCH NORMAL way of living. I just eat less. Look into the revision and fight it if necessary. Age should have nothing to do with it. Good Luck -
Hi all I had a VSG on 12th August and then developed a volvulus which they tried to fix endoscopically but it failed then ended up being given a bypass on the 21st. So I hadn't read as much about the bypass and all it involves because I had no idea I was going to end up with one The Bariatric nurse rang today and said I need to be on 80g protein a day instead of 60g as with the sleeve. So, my issue is that the protein shakes (slim fast etc) are making me feel really unwell an hour or so after having them and I am guessing it is the high carb count in them even though they are sugar-free. So I am trying to avoid them. Also Vomiting... WHERE HAS IT GONE!? Vomiting is pretty much just a burp and a tiny amount of bile!? I have whey Isolate unflavoured, which I am making up my protein milk with (and some dried skim milk powder) and adding it to some of my drinks too. I will go and read through this forum re: food etc but is anyone making their own fresh soup, adding protein and straining? Cheers

RNY revision to Duodenal Switch
ChocoSnowBunny replied to kcoffey60's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am so incredibly happy for you. I had Gastric Bypass in 2001. Most weight lost AFTER bypass (279) SW (before surgery) - 345 CW - 315. After enduring stage 4 breast cancer in 2010, I gained most of my weight back. I decided to return to my original doctor and request testing to find out if something went wrong with my original surgery. I was told everything was still in tact and I just need to start from SCRATCH! But I explained that I was able to eat a heck of a lot more. And that I would like options as to what can be done to tighten and/or revise my surgery. I believe my doctor was so eager to NOT have any "revisions" needed that he just sent me away - RUDELY! So I decided to ask around and seek a second opinion (of course - years later- because I believed there was something wrong with me). I followed his advise - but still believed something was wrong. Fast forward. I met a woman in my SAME situation and she referred me to her doctor for help. NOW, I am just waiting for an appointment. I will be researching the duodenal switch. I was never given this as an option. I am so excited for you.
