    My VSG

a lot of people feel cold all the time after surgery. For some it's temporary, for others it's permanent. Some of it is probably due to you have less "insulation" than you did before, but because that cold feeling can sometimes start within weeks of surgery (before most people have lost much weight), I suspect something about the surgery affects your inner thermostat, too. In my case, it was temporary - but some people are always freezing and have to wear extra clothes!

    Turkey neck?

I'm 3 and a half months past surgery and I've lost almost 39 pounds, which I'm very happy with. Prior to surgery, I did have a hint of a double chin, and now that it's going away, I'm getting a bit of a "turkey neck" instead. Meaning, there's some loose skin there and a couple of vertical lines I can see in the mirror and in photographs. Also, if I shake my head, my neck wobbles back and forth. Is this something that can go away as I lose more weight, or am I stuck with this look unless I have plastic surgery? Has anyone experienced this and found some solution? Are there any less invasive procedures like lasers or peeling that actually work? Also, I'm losing hair like crazy and I had planned to cut my hair to make it look thicker and healthier. My hair is currently about 15-20 cm past my shoulders (6-8 inches) and I had planned to have it cut to shoulder length or maybe even shorter for Christmas. But now I worry that shorter hair will make my wobbly neck all the more visible. I have wavy hair, so I also worry that shorter haircuts may look like "old lady" perms. Any thoughts or experiences with good haircuts that can hide or minimize a turkey neck and still look good ?

Super weak and dizzy at times

I'm 3 days post op and I have major swelling in my face and neck and my voice is extremely nasal. Just curious has anyone had this problem? Not anything I anticipated.
  4. I went back to work after six days. I had surgery on Tuesday and went back to work on Monday. It went well, although I was a bit tired and threw up a few times. My surgery was originally planned a week earlier, and then I would have had two full weeks before going to work, but the clinic unfortunately had to postpone it. If people have a desk job and everything goes well, returning in one week is completely doable. That said, I would have preferred a two weeks rest, had it been possible

Cheated for the 1st time since surgery

I did a 2 1/2 hour workout today, and while my body is sore now, it felt SO GOOD. I did 1/2 hour of weight training, 1 hour on the treadmill with 3 pound ankle weights on, and 1 hour on the bike with the weights on. I also did 30 stomach crunches and 50 sit ups. Very happy with the workout. Definitely making up for yesterday.

    Head Hunger vs Actual Hunger

I'm on week seven post-op. Sometimes I think I am actually hungry and I may be, but I give myself about 30 or 40 minutes after drinking a little bit of water to see if I'm still hungry.... Also, another giveaway for me is that I start getting really nauseous if I'm actually hungry, but if it's been less than 2 or 3 hours since my last meal, I drink enough water to try to fill my stomach and remind myself that it's probably just the habit of constantly eating in the past and not true hunger because I ate within the last two to three hours, so I should still be pretty satisfied technically... Drinking Water

I totally understand what's going all day and not peeing... I was told to get at least 32 oz of water as long as I was getting 32 oz of liquids through protein shakes etc... But when I go to the bathroom, it's a really dark almost orange color... So clearly I'm not drinking enough water... I have a highly demanding job and don't have time to go to the bathroom during the day, but the concern isn't just that. It's that I don't have time to drink water and I honestly don't have to go to the bathroom all day. Any suggestions? I am right where you are girl week seven after surgery too... 8. Heaviest weight 356. Weight before surgery 313... Weight since getting surgery October 6th...drumroll please........279! Woot woot! 23 lbs toil I hit 100 lost! About 3 to 4 weeks after surgery. I didn't lose weight for about 3 to 4 weeks... I was freaking out. I felt defeated like I was doing something wrong but then I looked back and realized I was doing every single thing exactly how it was told to be done... I know we're not supposed to doctor Google but I looked it up and The three week post-operative stall is actually a thing! It happens to most people that get bariatric surgery and it can last anywhere from two weeks to 5 weeks roughly. It is simply your body and metabolism getting used to your new stomach... But I'm back on track and happier than ever with the decision that I've made. Just thought you guys deserved an update for the ones that are rooting for me! The ones that think this was the easy way out. It's okay. You're entitled to your opinion, but you're definitely wrong... It's been a lot of work and dedication. It's been pain and hunger at times, but for the most part it's been the best experience I've ever put myself through for my own self-love and care. I started routine to take care of myself such as putting makeup on every day for work and doing my hair for work. These things sound small to some people, but for somebody like me that suffers with depression that's huge. So if you're not proud of me, I sure am! To the left is April at my largest weight. I have no full body pictures because I was so ashamed of myself... To the right is me last week... Progress not perfection.. how is everybody else doing for my October? Pre-surgery diet

It's like getting tortured isn't it. Just struggle through. By day four you will have it easier. Everyone is set a different diet so we can't really advise you on what you could eat. Sugar free ice pops should be fine though. The reason they do the diet is to - 1. Make us realise how much and how badly we ate. It helps break the sugar and junk food cycle. 2. To shrink our livers so the surgery is safe. A fatty liver is very fragile, they have to move it to get at the surgery site. A few people have had the surgery begin and woke to find the surgeon said, 'sorry can't do this today' They were heartbroken. Stick with it, it's worth it in the end. We are all living proof its possible. Mine was 3 long torturous weeks and I was so sick of it that I almost ran to the operating theatre shouting ' let's get this done'

    Pre-surgery diet

Distract yourself with everything you can. The pre-surgery diet is universally the hardest bit, and everyone just has to soldier through it. The first week is the worst, as it's pure cold-turkey and that means withdrawals from carbs and sugar which are rough. Ask your team if you can at least eat vegetables for some texture? If not, find any distractions, whether it's walking, reading, playing games, doing some DIY. It feels like forever when you start it, but the time does go. By week two, my looming surgery brought pre-op nerves that helped distract me from the starvation diet.
  14. I had two - one at four weeks out and one at eight weeks out (they almost always occur within the first three months post-op. They're very rare after that). My clinic sent me over to the hospital to get an EGD (the doctor who did it was not a bariatric surgeon - he was just someone on the hospital staff who does EGDs). They knock you out - you won't feel anything or know what's happening. And I felt 100% better afterward. when I had mine, I first noticed I had what seemed like acid reflux, which I thought was odd since bypass usually cures that. A couple of days later, I was having a hard time keeping food down, which is when I called my clinic. if you're able to keep fluids down, they may not get you in right away - it may be a couple of days. If you can't keep fluids down, either, then that's critical - they'll get you in ASAP. People can live without food for a few days (or longer...), but not fluids.
  15. Hello Everyone, I'm terrified that I have a stricture, as I've had a couple episodes of food coming up. But the last two days I have become more and more full as the days wears on and it feels like my stomach stays full. Tonight I could not get in enough food before my stomach started hurting. Does this sound like a stricture? If so, I've read an EGD and dilation is done. Does your bariatric surgeon do that? I ask because mine is on maternity leave so I'm scared of what will happen. How soon would this surgery take place? I'm hoping I can at least take protein shakes but I'm burping after every sip. Any advice or information from those who have gone through this would be great. Thanks. Laura

  17. Happy Thanksgiving! My dad made an INCREDIBLE turkey. I got 1-3/4 of an ounce of turkey breast & 1-1/2 ounces of ham & added some of the consome from the turkey pan. Still can't enjoy the carby-sides but I REALLY enjoyed myself. Gonna get more later!

  20. Well its exactly one year since I got my sleeve. I am so glad that I was able to do this. I cannot believe the difference in myself. As the pounds fell off, I gained my independence and gained myself-esteem back. That alone was worth every penny it cost me. I was beginning to become a hermit, happy to stay home and never face anyone again. Yes, the preop diet was hard. I was sick and nauseated for weeks after and my recovery was slow. Would I do this again? in a heartbeat, I wish I could have done it years ago. If you are thinking about the surgery and are still on the fence. If I could do this, you can too

    psych eval

The surgeon gave me three choices that my insurance takes and I called one. That was Wednesday and I had an appointment for two weeks later that day. I need to know what they will charge me before I show up. I have Medicare and I will start calling Monday.

    Drinking Water

I'm going on 7 weeks post op and have struggled. I haven't hit 60 oz in quite a while. I did go to the doctor to check in, but they didn't feel like I was dehydrated enough. I wish I could get an IV to see if it made a difference, honestly. I can go all day without peeing. Yesterday I was able to hit goal, so I hope that I can continue that.

    25lb more to go...

25lb more to go to reach my goal weight. Decided to weigh myself a week or so early from my usual 4th of the month. getting there. 6 more pounds and i will be under 200 So that is my goal for the next week and a half is to loose as much of that 5lb as possible lol.
  25. so yesterday while i was cooking dinner, i cut myself a (smallish) slice of cake i made and got about halfway though when i started feeling sick. i think it was a combination of dumping and lactose intolerance (didn't take my lactose pill cuz i somehow forgot that there was a whole lotta cream and mascarpone in there!!) anyhoo, barfed a little, pooped alot, and promptly passed out; then woke up starving this morning cuz i slept through dinner and my insides have been throughly cleaned out from the barfing and the pooping. so my breakfast of champions (of sorts): crackers, pate, cheese and figs (and like 3 glasses of water beforehand): 311 calories. almost ate it all.
