  3. I had my surgery on 2/19/08 and had only 1 day of gas pains in my shoulder and my port area was a little sore. I am already on regular food just have to measure and not overfill. Yes, I would do this again. Your health is everything. Good luck to you!

    Everything Hurts

Definitely call, just to be safe. I could have written this post. I have the same issues with pain and vomiting meat. I have already had the testing done and I am healed, no issues. The surgeon says my new stomach is just extraordinarily sensitive and that it will likely resolve itself over the next several months. I am 10 weeks out from my Gastric bypass. Sent from my XT1254 using the BariatricPal App
  5. My surgeon did not try to sell me on the RNY. I told him I was interested in the sleeve or band and we never even talked about the bypass. I actually saw his original presentation on WLS about 5 years ago but I didn't qualify. He was just starting to perform the sleeve then. He discussed RNY, band and sleeve. I would say he discouraged the band. My stats are not too different than yours. I was 257 and 5'3" as my starting weight. I had a 6 months insurance mandated diet and was at 242 at the start of my 10 day liquid pre op diet. I am 6.5 months out and am at 174. I am still losing, more slowly that when I first sleeved, but still losing. There are plenty of people on this board who have had sleeves and are well below the 180-190 that she quoted to you. If you are not comfortable with what this surgeon is telling you go talk to another one or two. Just because every one else loves her does not mean she is the right one for you. You need to be comfortable with your surgeon and the surgery. If you do decide on the sleeve I would recommend a different surgeon. You want a surgeon that believes in the sleeve and has a program designed for the sleeve not one modified from RNY. You don't want to have a minor stall or complication and feel like she is thinking "Well this wouldn't have happened it you followed my advise and had RNY". You want a surgeon that has done a large number of sleeves not one that does them occasionally, under duress.
  6. I'm in the same boat ladies I called my insurance company and they haven't received anything from my doctor yet so hopefully Monday when the POC that is due to submit it will be back and hopefully time will whine down I talk to my insurance company and they said that once they receive it they have 3 to 5 business days. To process it so I'm just as excited myself I've carried this weight for the past 19 years and I am being as patient as I possibly can with GOD's help.

Can you be more specific as to why it is tough? Im having surgery on 10/28/2017 and want to know as much as possible to try and prepare 51 year old woman VSG DATE: 10/28/17 5' 5" HW: 259 CW: 249 SW: --- GOAL: 135
  8. Hi all! Monday marked 3 weeks since my band removal and conversion from banded plication to sleeve. I am still working on getting all of my Protein in. Luckily, I purchased a lot of sample packs of Protein drinks before surgery so I haven't gotten bored with any particular brand or flavor. I also bought several different brands so that's helped me too. Since this is my 3rd WLS, I felt I was prepared for what life would be like immediately post-op and it was pretty much what I expected. I'm still sore from where the band and stomach were removed. I also had a large hernia repair in the same area, so my left side is still tender. My incisions look great and I'm almost completely healed externally. I try to not lift heavy items but still tote groceries and laundry baskets full of clothes around! I'm off from work for another 6 weeks due to summer break (I'm a teacher) so hopefully, I'll have my eating and drinking patterns established by then. What I've learned so far to help me: 1. Drink 4-8 ounces of Water upon waking (I learned this from VSGTanya on Youtube) 2. Drink a Protein shake soon after waking (Right now I'm only drinking about 4-5 ounces) 3. Eat protein every 2-3 hours 4. Try to get some form of exercise or activity everyday (I use exercise t.v. and videos at night) I also look for opportunities to exercise. For example, I took my kiddos to the park and I walked around the playground while they played. 5. Use MFP or another food tracking method for accountability 6. Go to therapy (This has been helpful to me and it's something I never did while banded) 7. If you can, find a support group that you like and go! 8. Enlist help from family and friends (Only my DH and 1 good friend know I had the sleeve. A few friends know I had my band removed. This has been a bit difficult for me but I feel that's the best decision for me, right now) 9. Measure food, especially in the beginning. I don't have a food scale yet but I put everything in cups or dishes that have measurements on them. 10. So far, I seem to lose better with a bit higher calories (around 500-600), a bit higher carbs (around 40-50) and more exercise. When I was "eating" lower calories (around 300-400) I would plateau, even if I exercised. This, so far, seems to be what my body likes - that may change later. 11. Recovery was easier than I thought but the mental part is WAY more difficult!! 12. Enjoy the journey. This is my journey and while I think it's important to learn from others and listen to my doctors, I don't intend to follow someone else's idea of what my journey should be. This is probably the first time in my life that I've felt like that!! Although I've only been sleeved for 3 weeks, I've had WLS for 12 years so hopefully, some of those years weren't all wasted and I learned from them! Thanks for reading. Sorry for rambling!
  9. I had my band removed in November, and had RNY surgery February 10. I don't think I'll ever look back. I lost a TON of weight with the band, but because of all the horrible side effects, was effectively bulimic. I puked more than I ate for four years. When the gird and reflux got so bad that I never slept more than a few winks here, I eventually returned to my old binge eating habits. Only worse - because only a milkshake would stay down. I am THRILLED with my slower RNY results, becuase I have not ONCE been sick!

Any teens who have gone through this?

Hoping to have RNY just before I turn 19. Almost done with all the pre op appts!!
  11. I'm right there with you. I haven't eaten since Sunday and am not the least bit hungry. The most I've been able to get down in a day is a 10 oz Muscle Milk, 20 oz of Water and a bit of broth. I'm sure it will get better but this is a seriously odd feeling!
  12. @caprice, I am going through the same issues right now. I keep gaining the same 6 lbs. I have been going through this since June. Don't freak out, this might all just be Water weight that continues to fluctuate. You can definitely lose the 10 lbs by your appointment next week, but it might take some buckling down such as cutting out all sugar (including fruit) for a week. Don't give up!
  13. I can't believe how good I feel. I was up and walking the evening after surgery and only took two doses of the heavy pain killers. I was released from the hospital yesterday and but for a bit of grogginess... I'm doing great now at home. I've been doing my walking, drinking my water and protein drinks. Tonight I liquefied some soup and had a few sips of that. But I cannot believe how good this is going so far. It's hard not to think the other shoe will drop... But has anyone else had an easy go of surgery and post op?
  14. I can't believe after almost 9 months since that first initial meeting....all this time spent in doctor's offices, money spent on co-pays and saving up for this surgery, arranging time off work for my husband and myself, arranging the kids care plus rides to school for them once my husband goes back to work, packing and cleaning the house hard core to preparation and the DAY IS FINALLY HERE! I am doing really well on the liver shrink diet and I am down 10 lbs. in the 9 days so far....today is the Clear liquids only I am not worried about handling it but I do have bad stomach pains that the only thing that will cure it is drinking milk. Luckily I have only had to drink milk three times this week during the liver shrink but KNOW that I can't today. Praying hard I don't get the pains today! Good luck to all the other people on this forum who are also having surgery tomorrow! We can all rock this!! Can't wait to see success pictures
  15. Strenuous activity often leads to muscle soreness. Finding a way to reduce this unpleasant consequence of physical activity would would be beneficial. After weight loss surgery some of us discovered that we had muscles we didn't even realize we had, due to years of neglect. A team of Spanish researchers believes it has discovered a cocktail that reduces such discomfort. Their formula is a combination of watermelon and pomegranate juice enriched with citrulline and ellagitannins. The authors chose these ingredients because they are linked to beneficial metabolic effects and performance enhancement. For example, citrulline, a non-essential amino acid found in watermelon, helps reduce the accumulation of lactic acid, a major cause of muscle fatigue. Citrulline is also converted to nitric oxide, a chemical that increases blood flow and is believed to boost muscle performance. Pomegranates contain antioxidants and ellagitannins; the former help protect nitric oxide from being degraded, and the latter aids strength recovery. The scientists then recruited 19 young men, aged 18 to 30 with extensive experience in resistance training, into a double-blind randomized crossover study. They tested four different beverages: Watermelon juice (WJ); watermelon juice enriched with citrulline (CWJ); watermelon and pomegranate juice enriched with citrulline and ellagitannins (CWPJ); and placebo (sugary water with pink coloring). Each man consumed 200 mL (about 7 ounces) of one of the beverages at random, and then performed a physically intensive squat exercise. The researchers then collected blood samples and asked the volunteers to rate the muscle soreness of their legs on a scale from 1 to 5. After given a week to rest, the volunteers repeated the experiment with a different randomly selected beverage. This procedure was continued until every volunteer had consumed all four beverages. The results of the study showed that at three time points after the squat exercise (1-hour, 24-hour, and 48-hour), the watermelon/pomegranate cocktail (CWPJ) was significantly associated with reduced muscle soreness compared to placebo. In fact, by 48 hours, athletes reported no muscle soreness at all. Furthermore, when the volunteers drank the placebo, their blood tests revealed a higher concentration of myoglobin (a biomarker of muscle damage) than when they drank CWPJ. The cocktail, therefore, appeared to reduce muscle damage. http://www.acsh.org/news/2017/05/30/juice-cocktail-could-help-reduce-muscle-soreness-athletes-11354

  19. Another benefit of Bariatric Surgery. A new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report shows that 40 percent of all U.S. cancer diagnoses can now be linked to overweight and obesity. Out of all cancer diagnoses, nearly 55 percent of female cases and 24 percent of male cases were linked to overweight and obesity. These cases statistically affect older adults, mostly between the ages of 50 and 74-years-old. http://www.foxnews.com/health/2017/10/04/cdc-40-percent-cancers-linked-to-obesity-overweight.html
  20. after 10 days of liquid diet what is next .what can I eat ? what do you graduate to? on wednesday I'll find out I'm on my seventh day but if anybody has any ideas for food after the 10 days please let me know
  21. I've been very frustrated having to wait the 6 months. I started doing everything in January and I'm gaining weight, not losing. If all goes well, I will be eligable for surgery in October (that's a total of 10 months from when I started). But even then , the surgeon said it takes another 3 weeks to schedule the surgery. And if I get denied, then all this time wasted was for nothing.
  22. Anyone else going on the bench this day? If so when are you starting liquids and going to soft foods? I would like to find someone with a similar date- to help hold me accountable, as well as for moral support. I am going to most likely head into surgery alone as my family lives out of town- and so I am a bit nervous about it. However I know it will be a great thing.

    Milestones

Same as yours! I was sleeved 10/7/13. I went from a 22 to a size 16! I found myself still going in the plus size for 2x then once I try them on I'm like this is way to big. Then walking past mirrors and thinking is that me! My wedding ring slides off my finger and I figured I have a ways to go so I'll wait to get it sized! Congratulations on your journey! I'm at a 41 pound lost.

    40yr olds...

I am 40 and am 5 weeks post-op. No complications so far (besides, like everyone else, trying to pass a stone where you shouldn't). Just had my 1 month post op appt earlier today and doc says I'm doing well, I feel excellent, energetic, and have had tons of NSV's in a really short period of time. To the original poster - my 1 week post op appt was a post surgery class that included about 10 other people that were also 1 week post op- I would say at least 7 or 8 out of those 11 people were 40+. I wouldn't worry too much about the age thing.
  25. Hi I'm 26 and my surgery is slated for March 2015. My family doctor had suggested looking in to RNY at an appointment last year and to be honest, I was almost offended and taken aback. Afterwards I had thought about it for a few weeks and had a reality check with myself. It also helped that I ran into a coworker who had lost 70 lbs and it was because of surgery. At that point I decided to attend the info session for my program and setting up appointments. I'm just really hoping that this will be the tool I need to lose the weight I need to. I've tried multiple diets in the past, only ever losing 10-25 lbs each time and only ever putting it back on, plus some. I'm so afraid I'm not going to lose and will fail at this.
