Yes. A revision to bypass is what usually occurs if your reflux worsens. In most situations your surgeon will advise against a sleeve if you have existing reflux/gerd. I had reflux but I’d managed it for many years with dietary choices. I usually only needed to take meds maybe <5 times a year. This was why my surgeon decided a sleeve would be ok. I still have reflux but it manifests differently & I do have to take a PPI every day. PS - I think those whose reflux improves after a sleeve is because of dietary changes & the weight loss. It’s not common though.

But if it gets worse I would need a revision to bypass correct? I don't want to have 2 surgeries. Sent from my SM-S908U using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm 8 yrs post op on a gastric bypass and have now started regaining weight. I'm considering the bypass revision or what appears to be another name duodenal switch. Curious if anyone has done this and what are their results...Also this would be a self-paid surgery and I was looking for an estimated cost.

For those of you who have gotten the sleeve do you wish you had gotten the bypass?
BriarRose replied to Tinkerbell1991's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
For me, it was the decision due to certain medication I was taking and continue to need that was the deciding factor for a sleeve. Interesting enough, I recently have had major vitamin and mineral deficiencies and major anemia. I am past menopause, so that wasn't it. I had a hiatial hernia bleed. Was it associated with my sleeve that I have had for 12 years ? Surgeon who went in and did an endoscopy said "no". but I recalled my mom and grandmother and a maternal aunt all had the same issue. guess what ? Me too. at 66 years old. Genetics. So NOW I am on Protonix and lots of medications to heal it up. I do not want surgery if I can avoid it. My sleeve still works. Dr said I have a normal sleeve structure ! I have lost 150 something pounds. I am happy with my sleeve. If I was told I needed to have a revision.... I guess I would but all is well. -
I’m 7 weeks post op on a revision and on soft foods. Having a hard time figuring out what to eat, especially as I return to the office and work. What are your go to foods/meals in this phase?

Sleeve to Bypass due to REGAIN
BLAKQUEEN replied to TheRevisionedVagabond's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi, I am scheduled for sleeve to bypass in March. I Am doing this because of severe GERD but also I gain over 50 lbs. I had a revision from band to sleeve due to complications with the band. I stopped working in 2018, I was very depressed and I didn’t do anything. Then COVID and the isolation and depression caused me To go from 170 - 235. So basically I’m having surgery for the GERD and I am afraid of this surge. If I had been told about the reflux I probably would’ve had the bypass first. good Luck -

I absolutely love my sleeve. BUT, I have to have a revision to bypass because it caused me MAJOR gerd issues. I didn't have any kind of gerd or reflux pre surgery, so I chose the sleeve. But it's caused horrible gerd, which made me need very high dose of PPI long term and gave me gastritis and esophagitis. The PPI caused pre cancerous polyps all through my stomach (3 different kinds, all different sizes) that require multiple procedures to remove them. Once that's done and I'm cleared, I have to have a revision to the bypass. If it wasn't for this, I would be ecstatic with my sleeve. I lost 110 pounds in 9 months. I went from a size 10 ring to a size 7. I went from a size 28/30 in clothes to 18/20. I got off my blood pressure medication and all 3 diabetes meds. I'm able to go BEAST MODE in my work outs. I wish I didn't have to get the bypass, but here we are. So just do your research because even if you don't have any gerd issues at all, the sleeve can cause it and you may end up with a revision to the bypass anyway. -

I am 31 female weight 368 5’4 - I’m in the stages of deciding which surgery I’d like to do and I’m concerned about the sleeve being a newer option and not having long term studies as well as I worry about GERD with the sleeve, and the worry of having to get a revision eventually to the bypass if I went with the sleeve -
I am OFFICIALLY in a size 7 ring!!! And my size 18/20 clothes are beginning to get a little loose. Holy crap!!!! I'm having my 1st procedure to remove (hopefully) half of my pre-cancerous polyps in my stomach on Friday the 17th. The 2nd (and hopefully last) one will be on March 10th. I'm thinking my revision (going from my gastric sleeve to a gastric bypass out of necessity, because of what the sleeve is doing to my stomach and my esophagus) will be in May or June. I can't wait to get through that and just get back to living my life. So tired of all these medical issues. I just want to go back to working out the way I used to and FEEL BETTER. So tired of this.

Hmmm thats a bit different- feeling full
smiles_so_luvly posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So, I am 5 weeks out of bypass revision. I feel great (a little stall, but I hear thats normal and I am not worried). I am happy. Just an observation, I dont get that full feeling as fast as I did like the original, the delayed fullness is weird. Me and the Dr. have talked about it and I understand why. I have had one hick up with overeating and that sh*t was painful for a good 45 mins. How are you managing this change if you are experiencing it at all? -
I chose the sleeve but 7 years later, my body chose rny lol (I'm in the minority that had to revise due to gerd). I love my rny so much (many reasons) but both are effective for losing weight if you comply with the rules.
-
Hmm. Sounds like lots of us had significant weight regain or never met goal. I also found out that my severe GERD that started immediately after the sleeve surgery is due to a hiatal hernia (also not there pre surgery). My choices? A sleeve revision, bypass, or be content with where I am. I’d love to hear what choices you all are making. thank you 😊
-
Since everybody is different here are my stats. I am currently a little over 1.5 years after revision to rny (gerd reasons). I am 5'3, in my 60s, no formal exercising, currently averaging around 1500 cal total calories, and weigh 107.7 lbs. I stayed about 800 cal till I got to my first basic goal weight (140 lbs). Then I upped it a little each month till my weight loss slowly leveled off. I was (and still am) slowly losing weight as I grapple with finding my maintenance calorie level. I do look at my net calories for interest but I do not go by net calories since the calories burned calculations are notoriously wrong.

That's how mine was set up as well. My insurance ended up pulling through last minute and approved my revision, but their requirement was that I had it done at the hospital instead of the surgical center. I think the way the hospital administered the anesthesia and pain meds post-surgery contributed to my having to stay over night. I had never had that reaction with previous surgeries done at the surgical center.

Revision scheduled February 21st!
Kimb497 replied to Kimb497's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I totally understand. I'm also very worried about strictures and possible dumping. I've been very fortunate with my sleeve, besides having reflux, which is actually manageable with medications, but I don't want to be on these for life as they can also cause problems with long-term use. I recently tried stopping them for a couple of days just to see if I really needed to have this revision. Even just oatmeal was causing me to reflux, so I guess it is the best thing for me right now. I will also miss being able to use ibuprofen occasionally for aches and pains. I didn't start using it until about a year out from sleeve, and it's not even once a week, but sometimes it's the only thing that really helps. Best of luck to you! -
Well, it's confirmed....

Thank you I'm a little concerned about the revision because I have MS meds that are extended release that my surgeon said will need to be changed out. But my neurologist said I'm stable on them and the only med I can take is a stronger injectable, but he's not inclined to put me on a stronger med that I don't need. So this is kind of a problem right now. The pills are capsules and can't be broken or crushed, but that's not really the issue. It's the malabsorption that's the issue because I guess extended release meds are a no no with the bypass, which is why I didn't want the bypass to begin with. -

Day 11 PO - Severe/sharp pain left side
ivorycassiopeia posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
History: I had a revision surgery from sleeve to gastric bypass on 1/31/23. I had all the normal gas pain issues (fun). Then, I had something weird happen - I got a severe, sharp pain directly in the middle of my upper abdomen. Lasted a day, then, when I was walking, I took a gasp breath and it rattled and went away. Doc thinks maybe mucus plug? That was insane and I’m so glad it went away. Current issue: Today, 11 days PO, I developed a severe, sharp pain in my lower left stomach (below/under the big incision - not the same spot). When I try to go to the bathroom (even just trying to urinate), it is killer pain. I can barely walk. The only way I can make it feel any better is stretching back and leaning to the right. Oh, and I’ve also felt vomit/bile at the top of my throat most of the day, too. Any ideas??? -

Revision
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Tina Tiff 1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
There are therapists that specialize in bariatric therapy. They help the patient manage expectations, emotions, dealing with head hunger, etc... It's actually a really good idea. Many of us on here have used them at one time or another. I have to have a revision and while I'm concerned about the rate of loss, I'll be honest, I mostly just want to feel better. I had my sleeve in May 2022 and I've lost 108 pounds. I still have 80 pounds to go to get to goal. I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing with my diet and working out, and it may take longer than it did now, but I know I'll get there. You will, too. Just keep in mind that stalls happen a lot, 25 pounds lost in 6 weeks in excellent, and just stick religiously to your surgeon's plan and you'll get there in the end. The main goal is better health, anyway. -
Convincing the doctor !
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to lennonforever's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My doctor and insurance said if you're getting a revision due to weight regain, you have to jump through the same hoops as if you're getting the original surgery. If it's for medical reasons (mine is for that) then there's not much that has to be done besides new labs and a new PCP note signing off on the procedure. BMI can also play into it if regain is the reason, as well as what you have tried on your own to lose and reset your pouch. Also, if your comorbidities are back and your PCP documents them and they are significant enough to require meds to keep them in check, that works in your favor. If you gained 50 pounds but you don't require any meds to be stable, they may just put you on a program to get your diet and exercise back on track. You still have your tool, you may just have to relearn how to use it. -
Revision scheduled February 21st!
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Kimb497's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have to have a revision due to sleeve complications (insane gerd causing high doses of PPI which have cased a ton of polyps all through my stomach, which make the gerd worse, which caused gastritis and esophagitis). I love my sleeve and am really sad to need a revision. I have to have half the polyps removed on the 17th, then the other half on March 10th. We're looking at a revision to bypass probably in May, which is ironic because that's my 1 year surgiversary for my sleeve lol The main things I experience is nausea after I eat anything, sharp stabbing pains in my abdomen that cause me to lose my breath and not be able to do anything but lay on the bed and cry, burning and churning in my stomach and up my esophagus, burning in my throat that sometimes makes my throat scratchy and my voice hoarse, spasming in my esophagus causing my throat to close and food to get stuck. I cannot WAIT to get better. Honestly. I love my sleeve, but this is too much. I just want to feel better. I didn't want the bypass because I don't want to deal with possible strictures, dumping syndrome, and I have 2 extended release meds that I can't stop taking (can't be broken or crushed) that will be an issue with the bypass. I never had any gerd or reflux issues, so all these problems came as a shock to me. I'm also really nervous this time around (I wasn't at all with the sleeve).
