I had my surgery on 6/27 and my first fill is August 11 also - I am hoping to have more restriction than I have now because even though I am not eating like before I feel I am getting in too many calories.

Hi Michelle...well done you! Wishing you every success with your fills...It’s weird how dr’s differ with their advice my dr advised 3 months unfill and Not to go onto shakes or mushy food was really adamant about it, he said to eat normally within the band requirements obviously meaning portion control and watch the calorie intake to assist with not gaining weight which I’ve been trying but goodness it’s so hard and the hunger I’ve gained a few pounds and only week 3 so far I don’t know what to do for the best not sure why their advice differs so...I’m trying it his way but it’s not curbing the hunger...you seemed to be better on shakes less hungry ? I need some motivation to stop this weight gain and hunger [emoji30]

Was Your Doc More In Favor Of Gastric Bypass?
mcgreen replied to juliet15teck's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It was suggested to me to have GB due to the large amount of weight I had to lose and the number of years I'd been MO. When talking about past weight loss, I told him I'd been able to lose 50+ lbs with atkins and he said that I'd do fine with the band- I think he was worried that if you didn't have some discipline that the band wouldn't work- and that's true; with the GB you have some time to get mentally adjusted while losing weight until you begin to reabsorb those evil fat calories -
I'd try to stick with it! Take a good HARD look at your diet and count the calories and exercise and make sure you aren't causing the lack of weight loss (I'm only going by what you said.. but if you are really eating nothing you would lose weight. If you are taking in less calories than you are burning off you will lose weight). Or try to change things up. Try low carb.. try eating a little more, or a little less.. or different things. Sometimes we get stuck in a rut... Maybe do a liquid diet for a day or two.. do the 5 day pouch test.. See if anything can jumpstart your weight loss to get your motivation back. Don't give up! You spend $15,000 and it's only been 6 months..

Gained it All Back but New Year, New Fill, New Me!
PrettyThick1 posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
So this is hopefully my last walk of shame. Since True Results went out of business, I now have to get my fills done by the surgeon who performed my operation. That's really a good news/bad news thing because now I have to take off a 1/2 day to get to the appointments on time, Houston is big and it takes forever to get from one side of town to the other - that's the bad news. The good news is that he makes me more accountable for my actions or lack there of. He was disappointed in me and said "so, we're right back where we started...and that's not good" and proceeded to put me on a very strict diet: only drinks with 0 calories, no food for Breakfast - only a Protein shake, lunch and dinner with no Snacks and nothing after 8:00pm, not even a carrot stick. So, today my current starting weight is 214.5, my goal is 175-185 at the lowest. I've been as small as 137, but I looked sick. I feel sexy around 180 so that's what I'm going for. I'll keep you posted. -
Sometimes we can still be eating too many calories...or too many carbs...even though we're eating much less than we were before surgery. If you aren't doing it already, I'd recommend tracking everything you eat in something like fitday.com so you have an actual record. Then you can tweak your diet until it starts working for you. Even then, then weight loss may be slow. If your calories seem right (generally believed to be 1000-1200 for women), perhaps start tweaking your carbs. Many people who drop their carbs between 30-60gm per day start losing more rapidly. .

How many calories on average for a typical day??
mtnman428 posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was just wondering about the general calorie intake on average that everyone was instructed (or is) to eat?? How much is too much, and what do you think is too little?? I just started solid foods yesterday, and have not yet had a fill. I do feel some resrtiction, but not much. Should I be eating 1200 calories for now? I mean, calories can always vary depending on what we eat (like, I can eat the same amount of pizza as chicken, but spend more cals on the pizza) So what would be a good # for me to keep up? Will I need room to lower my calorie intake to keep losing after fills; which, would mean I should probably be at the higher calorie end for now??? Thanks all! -
ok, not to perseverate on the brownie, but, today was the beginning of all the purim celebrations and I enjoyed a delicious 310 calorie brownie that came in the Purim basket from our temple today. It was good! We went to a diner after the party and I had the tilapie. I brought most of it home. i really tried to stay away from drinking while I ate. It was good. I had about: 3 oz of tilapia 130 cals 1/2 cup spinach w/ white beans 51 cals (had to butter in there!) 1 tsp butter 30 cals 1/3 c. mashed potatoes 111 cals 2 tbs gravy 50 earlier had 1 protein drink 160 1 Sobe lifedrink 0 2 cups water 0 Brownie 310 Hummos 3 tbs 60 1tbs pb 100 = 1002 Calories are still on the lower end. I definitely felt very low energy this morning before I ate. had to lie down. That worries me. I don't want to jeopardize my health.

Hi Ryan, Are you tracking your calories? I can honestly tell you I was too tight and didn't lose an ounce of weight because of it. If you don't get in enough calories you won't lose either, your metabolism will shut down. Track your calorie intake on SparkPeople.com or another website if you find it easier. Are you meeting with a nurtionist regularly too? They have lots of suggestions and helpful hints that help us along on our path. You're not alone that's for sure. Others have gone and are going through what you are. Work closely with your surgeon, keep track of your intake and definately see a nutrionist Good luck -
Lost weight but 1 year later gain it all back plus more- not me but my family. HELP

Thanks everyone for your encouragement. You are so right! I went through the kitchen gathering ALL the junk. Ice creams pasteries frzn meals and pizzas doritos, candy, Cookies Cereal and those silly cereal straws I went to the grocery store and purchased ALL better food. I still got some rice cake Snacks and 100 calorie snacks. And ice cream was the sugar free icicle pops and fudge bars. Got fruits and veggies-fresh. Got some meats. When she got home from school she yelled across the house, "where's my ice cream" I told her that I had put on a few pounds and I didn't want to sabatoge my progress....that I need to go back to making better choices with our eating. She grabbed the rice cakes and didn't say another word. Whew! -
I use myfitnesspal and personalized the daily amounts. I put in a goal of 1100 calories with at least 80g of protein. That then showed about 110g for carbs. But looking back over the past two weeks, I'm all over the place with days of 30, 60, or 80. But for the most part I don't go over. I do try to watch my sugar numbers closely though. I just don't seen to lose if I get too many sugars.

Weight Watchers is bringing out a brand new program in the New Year here in Australia - are they doing so in the States too? I have the entire home point program - I dont like the meetings much, I've got better things to do than sit around discussing how satisifying it is to mix jelly crystals in natural yogurt if you're after something sweet, lol. Puhlease! It just doesnt replace a Mars bar does it? Hehehe. But I love the concept of points, whereas I hate counting calories, go figure, it's basically the same thing.

just whining and complaining some more....

I'm sorry about your frustration. I had surgery 2 weeks before you did and I've had 3 fills in my 4cc band, totaling 2.2cc. However, I found that unless I cut my calories to an average of 900 per day, I wasn't losing weight. Might I suggest trying that for a few days and seeing what the outcome is? -
Guy- here are a couple of things that work for me when I it a wall: 1. I kick up the calories for a couple of days - then go back to my normal diet. 2. I kick up the protein -either thru shakes or those tubes things. 3. I know you said your doing an hour of cardio but I was just reading in Mens Health about doing less cardio with best results - by doing internals - I think it was the May or June issue. You can check it out online

?? Early in Process... What does full feel like??
heartfire posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm able to do full liquids/purees and very soft foods now. I've been on shakes for 3 weeks (10 days before surgery, 2 weeks after surgery). We were in town yesterday running errands and DD got hungry (of course!) so we went to KFC (yes, I know that isn't great but there wasn't much in the way of choices for me). We ordered a side of mashed potatoes and gravy for me. I ate really small bites and waited in between to make sure it was all okay. I stopped after a few bites because I just wasn't really hungry. I'm not sure if I felt full or not. If you'd have seen the container you'd think all I did was stir up the gravy in it and play with it some! I was concerned about how my stomach was going to handle it as well since I hadn't had actual food in so long but it did okay. Another reason I stopped is because I don't know what full is supposed to feel like and I just didn't want to have one bite too many and have to run to the restroom! Today is not much better. I had about a 1/4 of scrambled egg w/ milk and cheese cooked in it and some taco sauce on top. I drank about 4oz. of tomato Soup, again made with milk and some parmesan cheese grated into it. (Trying to boost the protein!) I'm not hungry at all, unless it's been a couple of hours, so I eat a little and am not hungry anymore. I was curious so figured I'd better start tracking my calories again on daily plate and I'm at 178 for the day so far! It's 3:30PM here right now. Do I just measure it and go from there or do something different? I'm so confused. What was it like for you that are a little farther ahead of me? Thanks for any help you might be able to give! And sorry this is so long! -
Now this is nowhere near as hard as what you guys go through on a daily basis but for each meal today I took teeny bies and chewed until liquified. It took a LONG time and my mouth was full of saliva.....with each swallow. If I was banded would this lead to sliming? Also, why no drinknig with food? That's a habit I would have to work very hard at to quit. Is it because the food will go through faster....therefore making the attempt to restrict calories pointles...or is it that things will get stuck?? Thanks again, Susan:hungry:

I didn't count calories while I was losing and I don't count calories now that I am at goal. Like always I am mindful about the quality of food I eat and just listen to my body/band. I rarely feel hungry but my body tells me when I need food and I tend to crave what my body is needing so I just eat accordingly and when I am full I stop eating.

3 Years Post Op And Have Gained Back Most Of My Weight
TKW replied to laurasweetlo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is my biggest fear. I have tried very hard to change my lifestyle permanently. I indulge once in a while, but I know that I could easily slip back into bad habits. I eat nothing without knowing exactly how many calories are in it, to a point of obsession. Granted there are times I eat a high calorie item anyway but I just don't and can't let it be part of my everyday life. I know you are having complications with the band, are you eating the right foods? Get back to the basics. Follow the rules, chew chew chew, eat slow, and small bites. I haven't been stuck in many months! I wish you luck! YOu can do it! -
Hi I think you are doing GREAT!! Yep you can eat more soup then beans. But look at the calories, probably about the same or less for the soup. It's wonderful that you have a plan for your downtime. A lot of folks find themselves snacking when bored. How are you doing with exercise? I personally think that is the key to puzzle of weight loss. Just get moving. I have Navy in my family too. Mom, brother and an Uncle. Give that husband of yours a great big hug for keeping us safe and free!! Have that husband of yours give you a super big hug for facing life's challenges head on. Good luck with your journey. Amanda

I can't seem to shake the blues this morning. I had a vgb 27 years ago and a REY two weeks ago. I gained 20 pounds while in the hospital for my two day stay....and two weeks later I'm still up by 6 (and gained weight the last two days). My calorie intake is NOT causing this weight gain....and my head knows that this is surgery trauma trying to work itself out. But I'm now sitting here questioning everything. I lost 80 pounds prepping for this surgery. I wanted to stop vomiting......I wanted the assist of malabsorption.....but I'm queasy every time I put food in my mouth. I'm uncomfortable with the feeling of food in my pouch. I'm disappointed that my body won't play along. I can't drink enough. I can't stand the thought of having to have two protein shakes a day to get the required protein in. I'm just really wondering why I put myself through all of this again just to feel as miserable as I do in this moment?

I was banded one day after you and I'm learning that patience is the name of the game, and that is hard! I've actually had four fills and I'm still not restricted. I can tell that I have the band (hurray!) because I do feel it if I try to eat a restaurant size meal, but basically I can eat everything, including big Vitamin pills. I'm losing about 2 pounds a week but it is from plain old fashioned dieting just like I did before I had the band. I have another fill scheduled for next week and just like the last few times, I'm hoping it will be the one that pushes me into my sweet spot. It could take awhile before you reach your sweet spot. All I can suggest is to do the same thing I'm doing.... track what you're eating, make healthy choices, limit your calories, and exercise! Good luck and hang in there!

I was banded last Tuesday, and had a great deal of difficulty with my energy level. I was really weak. I couldn't find the right balance of consuming Protein and clear (non-protein/calorie) liquids. Finally, I think I've found it. I'm using whey Protein. Instead of 1 scoop, I blend 2 scoops in 8 oz of 2% milk. I pour it into a Starbucks 8 oz container, chill and take to work. This gives me 46grams of protein per bottle, or 92 grams per day. It's really easy to sip during the morning and afternoon. In between, I sip juice mixed with Water. This has really helped my energy level. If anyone's struggling during the 1st stage to get enough protein - try this. Darrell...

Does your Dr put in a fill during surgery or does he make you wait 6weeks????
Carlene replied to shell04937's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had to wait 5 weeks after surgery before I got my first fill. It's hard to be patient, I know, but you have to think of this in the long-term. In my case, it has taken almost 2 years to lose 97 pounds. I am still about 10 pounds from goal, but I don't really work at losing any more, so it serves me right. I wear a size 2/4 and couldn't be happier - except for the vacant skin that is still (literally) hanging around. Depending on which band you have, it may take several fills to achieve good restriction. Don't expect to hit the "sweet spot" with your first one. One more thing....you will do 100 times better if you follow the bandster rules. Eat protein first, then veggies, then carbs. Stay away from liquid calories (ice cream, chocolate, etc) and exercise. GOOD LUCK!!! -
I have seen progress, especially since I started tracking my calories. I was never a fan of "counting" calories, but it has really helped me put things into perspective. Even though I was eating smaller portions, I still wasn't making the best food choices. I also have my first first fill in over a year scheduled for next Tuesday. I'm pretty certain that will help a lot!

About the plateau/starvation mode theory....
Jaffa replied to Losing_It_In_Texas's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Just a side note. If you are working out a lot, not having enough calories will definitely give you less energy to put into the work out. So you may work out for the same amount of time, but the net result is less calorie burn and maybe even less fat loss. If you get enough Protein and you are working out. You can eat very little and still be healthy. But that is the big kicker, if you eat too little your going to be tired and not want to work out as much. If you aren't going to do any physical activity, then you still need the protein, but maybe not quite as much in calories. The problem is the less you eat in calories the more critical the protein, and 1 gram of protein is going to be at best about 10 calories. So lets say you want to starve and eat protein isolate all day. You would really need to eat about 70-90 grams of protein because you don't want your body using muscle for energy. Well, that is already about 700-900 calories.
