Had Surgery Yesterday - Can Drink and Swallow Normally?!
rjan replied to cowgirlcullen's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had trouble even with fluids at first - couldn't drink much at a time. But not everybody does - especially if you got the bypass - the sleeve can be worse. Once you get to real food, you'll probably start feeling it more. In the meantime, thank your lucky stars! -
Had Surgery Yesterday - Can Drink and Swallow Normally?!
cowgirlcullen posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey ya'll, I had gastric bypass yesterday morning, and after I recovered from the anesthesia I could swallow and drink a normal amount of fluids just like I always have, what is going on?! I am worried that maybe they did the sleeve instead of the bypass because the nurses and even the surgeon kept saying 'sleeve' and then I would say, 'no, I should be getting the bypass' and then they'd correct themselves and say they meant bypass. Anyway, I'm just really concerned why I am recovering so fast and able to drink gulps and fit as much fluid as I want, which has been a lot since my mouth has been super dry since I woke up from surgery. I also went vegan recently, which I knew would help with inflammation and my blood vessels and such, but I did not expect to recover so easily and so quickly and it's freaking me out a bit. My Surgeon gave me a choice to choose my surgery: Sleeve vs. Bypass vs. RNY
Tracyringo replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you have any kind of heartburn what so ever you may as well do the bypass, otherwise I would do the sleeve. Its really your choice when it comes right down to it. I had just started having mild heartburn and it runs in my family so I should of had that bypass to begin with instead of the revision to bypass. -
Myotomy and sleeve to bypass revision due to GERD
Tracyringo replied to Foxbins's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
She is right. I had the revision done a few weeks ago and I could eat more calories if I wanted or needed to. I am doing 700 no problems. There is no restriction for me like with the sleeve so all liquids and full liquids and even some soft foods just slide right on through. It is really weird ! I can see how people could gain so easily with this if they just ate slider foods. -
Morning everyone! Revised 5/27, feeling great, had post surgery visit yesterday - all is well, besides the hematoma - posted a topic the other day - but all is well .... surgeon isn't that concerned. Yesterday morning, I was woken up by this weird feeling in my chest, sat up fast and boom - acid vomit - light green bile looking. Didnt think anything of it till today --- same thing - this time I didn't vomit but the acid/bile or whatever it is - is horrendous. I thought, or I was hoping, that the revision would take care of this - and this is worse than before the surgery -- fluke? I'm on Prilosec, but normally that doesn't work for me, so the surgeon gave me Protonix yesterday, which I love... always worked, as did Nexium. What could it be? Could it be lack of food? should I maybe eat something before going to bed - even if protein shake? Thanks - hope all is well with everyone!!!

Everyone is different. I have read where some people have restriction after bypass. I never thought that I would not but so far there is nothing and I am not trying to overeat to find out, lol. I don't feel hunger at this point. I am sure you would lose weight but I am hearing its not easy for some as you might think . It has been totally different for me this time. I do not feel like I had a WLS, maybe that will change when I am all healed up inside. -

Had bariatric surgery back in Oct 2018 and still feel week
Suzi_the_Q replied to fernandotrejo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
From what I understand (I'm still pre-op), when you lose all that fat it dumps a ton of hormones into your body which can really affect your emotions/ depression. Luckily, that's temporary and will pass. Are you on psych meds? If so, when was the last time you had them rejiggered? Bypass changes your metabolism and how you absorb things too, so it may be that you need to work with your doctor/ psychiatrist on finding the right combination for you in your new body. Depression can really wear you out and we're all going through such stressful times right now. Aside from that, the B-12 and iron as mentioned above, you may want to add a probiotic to your regular course of vitamins. (I recommend flor restore- you can find it in regular drug stores and often the grocery store too). They're learning so much now about how gut bacteria impacts the brain including happiness/ depression. It may help. -

I am having a revision and hernia repair on June 19th, I gained about 50 pounds since my lowest weight after sleeve surgery. I feel like I’m always hungry and wondering if I’ll lose more weight and feel restriction again after my revision? I am getting revised to fix GERD but would like to reach my goal weight which I never did with my sleeve. -

I hope you feel better soon. Hang in there, it takes time to get better. 🙂 I hv my revision on June 24, and I’m starting to get kinda nervous. I have a hiatal hernia to hv fixed and then gastric bypass. Do they put drainage tubes in ur stomach for a revision? -
I did the revision to DS three weeks ago. My sleeve was done 7 years ago. I have no problem getting liquids or food down. I do have a reduced appetite and portion sizes have to be small. I remember having no issues with getting enough fluids post OP for the sleeve. I understand your back may get tired and sleeping on your side can be painful. I was able to sleep on one side or on my back since the first post OP day in the hospital. I also had one larger incision that caused pain for two weeks. I'm recovering better than expected because I actually had three surgeries in four days, two were laproscopic (used same incisions). Fortunately, the pain goes down a lot each day until you don't feel it anymore. Following a serious motorcycle accident years back, I had a fractured pelvis and could only lay on my back for 6 weeks. Laying on my side or stomach would put pressure on the fractures and cause pain. It is strange how sleeping on your side becomes your number 1 goal in life when you can't do so. My best advice is to sleep on your back. When you feel your back is tired or sore, stand up and walk even if it is just one minute. Try sitting in a chair for a few minutes then try laying on your back again.

Myotomy and sleeve to bypass revision due to GERD
catwoman7 replied to Foxbins's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
if you're at a normal BMI, you may not lose any more weight. People who are still pretty far from goal typically do with a revision (although not as quickly as with a virgin surgery), but if you're at a normal weight, then you may not. Just follow your surgeon's guidelines and you should be fine.. -
Myotomy and sleeve to bypass revision due to GERD
Foxbins posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my sleeve done in 2011, reached my goal weight of 138, and have maintained it since. I developed GERD about two years after the sleeve surgery. I've been on omeprazole since, the max dosage the past two years. GERD gave me an esophageal stricture which causes food and liquids to regurgitate back into my mouth after swallowing. It's truly gross to have to repeatedly reswallow the same mouthful of food. Sometimes things get stuck and I have to vomit them up. I've had a couple of endoscopies, a BRAVO study, and esophageal manometry. The manometry shows I have achalasia (impaired swallowing) too, not surprising when you only have a 12.5 mm wide esophagus. It was dilated during an endoscopy, but shrank back down fairly quickly. My surgeon wants to do a Heller myotomy to fix the stricture but a common side effect of myotomy is GERD. So he has to do something about the GERD, too, and that has to be some kind of bypass. Since I'm at goal weight with a BMI of 21, I don't have much spare poundage to lose. Plus I'm 65 and don't want to end up one of those "frail elderly" people who can't carry groceries or walk very far. I am hoping that my surgeon will make the very shortest bypass limb he can. Approval came a week after submission so I'm scheduled for June 29. No preop diet required. It's all happening a little fast and I'm a little freaked out. I think I've forgotten all the food stages :-). Support would be appreciated. -
Had bariatric surgery back in Oct 2018 and still feel week
fernandotrejo posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello All, I need your help/advice, I had my gastric bypass completed back on Oct 2018 and still continue to feel weak. I'm currently taking the Optisource, post bariatric surgery vitamins and my labs come out just fine but I continue to feel weak and always feel tired. Another of my medical conditions is depression which I've been experiencing for years since before my surgery. I was able to meet my weight loss goal but when walking I feel as I if I don't have the strength to support my body weight. At this point I don't know if this lack of strength is due to my depression or a consequence of the weight loss surgery. If anyone has information they can share it will be greatly appreciated Thank you in advance -
Good or Bad Oasis of Hope or Bariactric pal MX
Tamwell replied to Tamwell's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Im a little confused, is it Bariatric Pal Hospital or Hospital BC? I have heard that it is referenced as both names. If I have acid reflux is it ok to have the Gastric Sleeve or would I need the Gastric Bypass? Thank you Tammy Weller -
My Surgeon gave me a choice to choose my surgery: Sleeve vs. Bypass vs. RNY
ChubRub replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The reason I chose bypass was b/c I read so many stories about people converting after the sleeve, and I didn't want to have a 2nd surgery down the road. I also had GERD, and didn't want it to get worse. My GERD completely went away after my bypass. I don't even need TUMS anymore...it's amazing! -

My Surgeon gave me a choice to choose my surgery: Sleeve vs. Bypass vs. RNY
New&Improved replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Bypass is very common and known as the gold standard these days! Nothing drastic about it. Was a very quick surgery and easy recovery. -
I am scheduled for a revision from sleeve to rny on 6/23. I had my sleeve 11 years ago, and have had severe reflux since then. Scared about having another surgery, but also afraid not to. My surgeon thinks he can get rid of 90% of my reflux or more. Been sleeping mostly in a recliner for the past 11 hrs due to the reflux (bile). Anyone else scheduled this month?

IMHO... Listen to your surgeon. GERD *may* get worse then you'll end up with a bypass anyway. Good Luck ❤ -

I’m glad you’re feeling better😊 keep us posted. Granted my bypass was 17 years (now reversed) ago but being able to eat an egg, half piece of bacon and 1/4 biscuit does seem like a lot so soon out...your pouch should be 30 cc if my homework is correct. Ask your doc how big your pouch is. -
1 year post op- not at goal
New&Improved replied to middlet's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I disagree with people being told not to have a goal in mind or having a goal that seems unattainable... I had the bypass and I was thinking I'll be happy to get under 200 which I did then I felt I'll keep going and I started at 322 got down to 165 that's almost half my body weight gone and well below any goal the surgeon had set for me, I feel it was important for me to set different goals as I went along and there's nothing wrong with setting hard goals it will keep you focused and so that you don't get complacent and think I've done okay I'll stop now... I disagree with @AlwaysCruising it's completely fine to set hard goals and WORK your butt off to get there... I know many people believe in this new age of P.C and kids today can't even be happy to win or beat their opponents anymore... Some schools telling kids not to think about winning but I say enjoy your successes and celebrate your WINs in life... I started with a BMI of 43.6 I'm now BMI 22.4 and lost 100% EBW -
My Surgeon gave me a choice to choose my surgery: Sleeve vs. Bypass vs. RNY
MaybeMeow replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My BMI is 36 with my only co morbidity being GERD and I'm getting the Bypass. I admit I felt the same way. I wanted a Sleeve. Surgeon recommended the other. Said I could decide. Then he said this. Sleeves lose an average of 70% of their excess weight. So you would go down to about 170. Well I was 170 eight years ago and I felt fat then. I wanted more. So after a couple sleepless nights I decided Bypass. I think the straw than broke the camels back was that and the fact that the surgeon said "I can't tell you for certain which is the better choice for you. But I can say with certainty that the Bypass will cure your GERD." So there you go. I'm still nervous about it. My surgery is in 2 days. BEst of luck with your choice. -
My Surgeon gave me a choice to choose my surgery: Sleeve vs. Bypass vs. RNY
New&Improved replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I personally chose the RNY BYPASS because of many reasons but yes a big one is seeing so many ppl starting with the sleeve ending needing a bypass anyway and I could only do one surgery so the bypass was the best choice for me. I've been very lucky with no complications and only a week stall here and there but still managed to surpass all my goals and currently MAINTAINING BELOW my goal weight after losing 157lb Bypass isn't that drastic the more intense ones are DS. You take vitamins with sleeve or bypass. Sleeve just limits the food where bypass changed your metabolism.
