July 2020 Surgery anyone?
BigSue replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, Lori, July 16 gastric bypass here. I have a lot of preparation to do! I just got insurance approval on Monday, and I didn't want to get ahead of myself and start buying stuff before I got approved. I think this weekend, I will go on a BariatricPal shopping spree. I also need to figure out my transportation to and from the hospital. -
So, I’m home ... again!!! Just got home from being re-opened after my RNY on 5/27. I went back in, to the ER per my surgeon, due to vomiting and nausea of bile. They redid a contrast CT. And found the same thing they did last Saturday night, when I went for the hematoma. So turns out, he went back inside my belly, or lack of, to scope and see what the issue was. He said I must heal fast and that there was scar tissue at the “y” part of the bypass and it was twisting. He sees it happen but two weeks out was quick. So he fixed it as far as I’m told. Three more incisions, haha, to add to the abdomen. I feel sore and tired but glad to be home. Hate being in a hospital bed. I hope this was a “fluke” and not a list of things to come. Glad to catch it now. Has anyone had this? ? ? I’ve always had an issue with Water consumption with my sleeve and stil feel feel the same today. I’m hoping it’ll get better and my life Won’t be a sip of water. The nurse listened to by belly today before discharge and said it sounded like a coffee percolater lol churning and churning. I hear nothing. So either I’m Hungry and don’t realize or it’s the bowels now that they might be working better with out that “obstruction” Or “twist” in the way! haha

Hi Do you think it’s the amount of protein that’s giving you an issue? Wonder why. Too rich!? I have 30g of protein in my shake. Did with the sleeve and now with bypsss. Mind you I’m only about 2 1/2 weeks out from my Bypass and split it with two meals for now. Could it be the flavor?. Is it mixed with water? I oddly enough find that cookie and cream give me a stomach ache. -
Has Anyone Voluntarily had a Revision done?? Please share
rfm9357 replied to Micarbtb86's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
What is the DS option? I had sleeve 7 years ago and am now struggling. Have "only" gained 20 of the 150lbs I lost, but everything just feels so different. My relationship with food feels like it did pre-sleeve. I now crave food all the time, am never satisfied, and am really struggling - like the fat person I was before surgery? I am afraid of the bypass, and (maybe) would entertain a sleeve tuneup if such a thing exists. Yes I do have terrible stomach pain/ heartburn, but not reflux? And that is well documented, yet they say that I do not have hernia...? -
MAY-JUNE-JULY 2020 BYPASSERS UNITE!! Veterans Welcome too!

Hello Gang! So sorry for going MIA on you. I just got home from the hospital one hour ago. While my surgery went well, I became extremely nauseated in recovery and stayed that way for the next 48 hours. Gang... if there had been a death-button I might've pushed it. I can't describe the misery and I won't try but I did at one point become delirious because I was so miserable for so long. ANYWAY... they did everything they could to relieve me and eventually it just stopped. So then I was in this glorious high. The pain, which I only noticed AFTER the nausea left is mild to moderate and tylenol helps. I am home and sipping and walking. I just ate a 1oz jello shot with 2 grams protein and it seems to be going ok. I was thinking about my Bypass buds and hoping Lici and Chubby were faring better than I. I am so happy to be home in bed surrounded by a body pillow and my dog and listening to the happy sounds of my family in the house. I will post a play-by-play as I really appreciated when others did it for me but I'm going to close my eyes for a bit first. Thank you so much for sending the good thoughts. Lici it sounds like yours was a breeze and I'm so pleased. More soon! -
Any advice for a 19 year old going into it?
New&Improved replied to 0doru0's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Welcome if you need a friend I'm here. I personally had the bypass but I needed to lose 150lbs and I have done that. Being 19 though you have to be mentally prepared for a huge change in your life where most of your friends are probably going out every weekend and socialising you'll not be as social you'll need to commit to this change of lifestyle totally to be successful and not let temptation take over. It is a good decision but a big decision I choose RNY BYPASS personally because I needed more than just sleeve and wanted better long term success as well.. The sleeve is fine if you only need to lose a smaller amount but there is chance of reflux issues and then needing a bypass anyway. Tell us more about yourself and what surgery you are thinking of and what research you have done??? -
I'm still convinced that virgin weightloss surgeries have a different level of restriction than revisions but don't worry about it, success can still be achieved. Try to move slowly through the foods to check for food intolerances vs a structural issue such as stricture. Good Luck

Had revision on 5/27 - 4 days ago started feeling sick and vomitting up bile. Horrendous pain. I couldn’t get liquids down. I had the same issues with the sleeve though even years out. Water bothered me all the time. Had to do sips all the time. Other liquids not so much. But nothing stayed for. Surgeon requested a ER visit so Off I went. Turns out that something was going on. Had a contest ct scan but was normal as it was on Saturday when I had one for my large hematoma. I just had lapro again yesterday as some of the scar tissue was giving me an issue. Was only 2 weeks. I hope this was just a flukr. They said sometimes it happens I am Hoping to go home today!!!! And this is the restart to things to come. I know some have said you lose your restriction. Sleeve was better with that. I find restriction but could that be cause it’s a new surgery? Hope all is well.

After such a long time doctors seem to be hesitant to view the RNY as the culprit. That doesn't mean that there aren't problems that occur years after surgery. What comes to my mind when talking about "leaky gut" and "gastric bypass" is SIBO. Did anyone look into this?

I had gastric bypass one week ago today and feel as nothing has changed. I drink without feeling full or anything. I hope this is the way it should be 😳 -
Hello everyone Just felt like checking in if anybody is curious how I'm traveling.. Well I've been in maintenance now like 2 months and still weigh myself most days just to keep focused and hold myself accountable. My lowest weight was 164.8 in the last two months yet some how this morning I've got to 163.8 and I'm literally not even trying to lose weight I don't log everything I EAT LIKE I used to and I feel I'm eating real food now and between 1500-2000kcal most days like I've totally changed the way I ate for the first 6 months but still cannot gain weight. I'm still considered healthy with 22 BMI Still use shakes most days just to keep hitting protein goals. I'm not complaining perse' was just amazed that this RNY BYPASS has compeletely changed my metabolism into a skinny person's metabolism and its great to finally feel normal. I hope I'm able to give people inspiration and to show anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Total weight lost now is 158LBS from my heaviest.

JUNE 2020 BYPASSERS
California Guy replied to cowgirlcullen's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Congratulations on getting that done! We all worry about worst case scenarios. Relax and focus on recovery. I also had no trouble with fluids after my sleeve or bypass revision. No nausea or gas pain either. I did have a reduced appetite so I didn't have a lot of desire to drink a lot of liquids. -
Congratulations on your plans. I just got a bypass. From my meeting with my nutritionist, while you would hit your protein goals with shakes or bars, it is best to get your nutrition from natural sources. Processed foods should be avoided. With that said, shakes are better than protein bars which have a lot more fat, and carbs. Also, we can treat ourselves to something sensible now and then. Just don't make it part of your daily routine. You should probably wait for the normal food stage 3 months after surgery.

Hey ya'll! I searched, and there doesn't seem to be a topic for the June bypassers yet, so I guess I'll start one. I had surgery on Monday the 8th, so 2 days ago. My recovery has been a lot easier than I expected, but I'm really concerned that I'm drinking/swallowing normally and can get down all the fluids I want, which has been a lot since my mouth has been so dry. I haven't had any nausea or vomiting or even any gas pain that I can tell. I do have some discomfort, but am not sure that is gas pain. Anyway, I am just really worried that I my surgeon didn't make my pouch right or something since the fluids are just flowing freely. How are you doing post-op so far? If you haven't had surgery yet this month, then stay tuned because you will likely find these posts helpful once the time comes.

This might be a stupid question, but can/should you eat protein bars after gastric bypass surgery (obviously not in the beginning, but once you're back to solid foods)? My favorite protein bars are on sale for 50% off right now, and I'm tempted to stock up, but my surgery is just over a month away and I don't want to buy a bunch of protein bars that I'll never be able to eat.

I think something is wrong?
California Guy replied to FujiApples's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In 2013 I got sleeved. By 9 to 12 months post OP I went through the same issues. I was able to work and focus, but I lost a desire for everything. I didn't have any interests, desires, and everything I used to care about was unimportant. I was also getting light headed and dizzy at that time. I know my diet at the time was too extreme. This is when I hit my lowest weight in a decade. Was 327 lbs. and got down to 209 lbs. I wasn't expecting weight loss to reduce my happiness so much. Unfortunately, the way I dealt with this was to just stop the extreme diet. I gained some weight back and most of these issues cleared up. I was probably dealing with a combination of poor nutrition, low blood pressure, and depression. Fast forward to today. I recently got a revision to DS. I again feel light headed and fatigued. My Doctor is adjusting my blood pressure medicine. I'm careful about getting all the nutrition, vitamins, and supplements I need. Now I'll follow a permanent, reasonable and sustainable diet. -
You posted this in the bypass section. Might want to pay better attention next time. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

A lot of people love him, I found him rude and abrupt- I consulted with him. He talked at me instead of listening. He automatically said sleeve without considering my history. I did see him earlier on and for a gallbladder surgery consultation as well and I would have needed comorbidities I was not quite the BMI at that point. I didn’t want to get that far. He not only said “oh you’re gallbladder isn’t inflamed” he just made a lot of assumptions about why I was seeking bariatric surgery. long story short I left dissatisfied and knew it wasn’t going to happen with this doctor. It wasn’t until I went to see an endocrinologist to discuss my metabolic disorders, why medication wasn’t an option, my constant battle with my weight and continued dietary efforts and the fact my weight was still climbing and reaching that 40 BMI ... that she suggested Cleveland Clinic. im glad she did. My doctor was honest, straightforward, recommend gastric bypass surgery based on my history. The process was much easier. Also when he removed my gallbladder during my RNY there was actually chronic inflammation ...

I thought the exact same thing after my surgery! I was afraid I'd gotten the sleeve instead of the bypass, but I can't remember why I thought that. Anyway, I also had no trouble getting fluids in after surgery and wondered if something was wrong. But no - I was fine! -
Yes, the Dr. will control the robot. I’m scheduled June 23 with the robot as well ( gastric bypass).

I had trouble even with fluids at first - couldn't drink much at a time. But not everybody does - especially if you got the bypass - the sleeve can be worse. Once you get to real food, you'll probably start feeling it more. In the meantime, thank your lucky stars!
