  1. From what I understand, liquids don't sit in the stomach very long if taken alone... so given your modest rate of drinking - 2oz per 10-15 minutes, it may be that your stomach is emptying that liquid as fast as you are filling it.

    "Bottomless pit" days...

I get between 75-85 protein daily. I thought head hunger was "all in my head?" I was physically hungry....growling, pain in my shoulder etc. I am about 10 days pre TOM. Maybe this was it. Just feels strange it would be 1 day and not again today.
  5. My sleeve loves shrimp. My sleeve hates spaghetti. My sleeve loves steak. My sleeve hates bread but can tolerate toast. My sleeve sometimes tolerates but usually hates chicken. I have 10 lbs of it in the freezer that I will be tossing out as I bought it nearly a year ago, thinking that it would be my primary Protein.

    Hungry!

I was hungry too. For me a lot was caused by excess stomach acid. I started back on Nexium and it helped tremendously. Also starting soft foods helped a lot too. I'm only 19 days post-op and still feel hungry at times but it's manageable. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  7. I had surgery 10/15 and I still find myself lacking in energy. I take my Vitamins, eat Protein but could do better and drink liquid but could be better, however, before surgery I always had a TON of energy. I just don't have that kind of energy I use to have and I don't know what to do. I even find it hard to get motivated to work out when before surgery I was always committed and go at least 5 days a week. Is anyone else feeling this way?
  8. I have RA also I had to stop taking methotrexate 4 weeks before surgery and can't start taking it until 4 weeks after surgery. I had surgery 1/19/17 And I haven't had any bad pain since surgery thank goodness. I've started to work out a bit more and I do feel more soreness but that just might be from the work out or both. Hopefully I can make it another two weeks without pain because lord knows RN pain is the worse ever! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Tsmyle, Dr Abkin is great! I just scheduled my surgery for Dec 10 at Morristown! I would have liked to go to JFK because it's a little closer but he was booked there until after the new year and I want to get the surgery done ASAP. Good luck with your surgery!

    Arm/chest Pain

Walking is the best. I got my band on 12/22 and I had ALOT of gas pain. I put a heating pad on my shoulder that hurt the worst and that seemed to help too. Just remember, for every 10 mins you sit, walk for at least 3-5 mins. It gets the gas moving and coming out.
  14. Keep your chin up! It is so frustrating. I broke down crying at one point when they said it was going to take about a month after my insurance approved before they could get me on the schedule. I wanted it NOW! But God is great, and He not only had insurance approve me in a weeks time, but also had an opening on their schedule so that I was in two weeks later! I wanted so bad to have the surgery in April so I could lose weight before my sons graduation, and whiel I didn't get what I wanted in terms of weight loss, I did get the surgery on 4/29, so I made that date, and I lost 10 lbs before his graduation so at least I was on the way!
  15. My sleeve surgeon just did a gallbladder removal for me a couple weeks ago. I saw him today for follow-up and he chatted a bit about a bariatric surgeon conference he just attended in Sydney, AU. Just as background, my surgeon does mostly sleeves and the occasional bypass. He used to do a ton of bands but now only does the band if the patient insists. He still maintains a lot of bands. He said that the band is way down in Australia and whole areas of the country have no band surgeons anymore. He also said that the re-operation rate (for all types of re-operation) is as high as 40% with the band. He said that the band has a lot of potential points of failure, including that the port can flip, the needle can puncture the band during a fill and cause a leak, or lots of other ways that are not really direct failures of the band. He seems pretty down on the band now but wants to give his existing band patients the highest standard of care. He also confirmed that Allergan has sold the lap band to another company, Apollo Endosurgery. I googled that and found a story in the Wall Street Journal. http://m.asia.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052702303471004579165961441181356?mobile=y He said that the sleeve is gaining massive popularity because of the low complication rate, high success rate, and that they are starting to feel really confident about the long term prospects of the sleeve, starting to see some patients with more than 10 years sleeved. He said that the sleeve may stretch 3-5% over time but then it stops. He said it is like taking a t-shirt and cutting off a sleeve. You can stretch the sleeve but it will never be nearly as big as the shirt. The bypass is going to be around a long time and is still very well regarded. It is the #1 choice for people with reflux or bowel diseases and it is the best salvage surgery for people who have reflux problems after the sleeve. The DS is very uncommon these days because the sleeve works so well on its own. This is my surgeon's summary to me about the state of bariatric surgery in Australia today from the point of view of the surgeons.
  16. So I was just walking by the vending machine as I passed through the breakroom and noticed my reflection. I have to say, for being 284, I look pretty good. I've always weighed heavy (drat!), but I don't look my actual weight (thank God). That isn't to say that I don't look overweight (cause I really do), but you know what I mean. Anyway, I had in my head that I wanted to weight 170 and I still do, however I got to thinking just now about the last time I lost weight. About 10 years ago I lost 100 pounds - I got down to 210 pounds and I looked smokin' hot. I felt great, I was running, I was wearing a Misses size 12/14 and I was happy. Why in the world am I now pushing for 170 when 210 felt so good?! I know even 170 pounds is overweight and 210 must surely be in the obese category, but I really don't care. I think I'm tossing my 170 pound goal and for right now, I'm shooting for 210. For me, this is another non-scale victory. I think I'm getting to know the content, happy, accepting thinner girl that's inside me. It's a good day!

    Chaning My Goal

If you feel great at 210, that's terrific, the only reason you'd push for 170 is that statistically, that will place you at lower risk of weight related disease, depending on your BMI - and for most women, BMI of 210 is still going to be obese. It is for me and I'm 5ft 10. But there's more to life than being obsessed about numbers, and if you look and feel great and live a healthy active lifestyle at that weight, then fantastic. I changed my goal as I sat at 79kg for aaaaaaages. Its was *just* normal BMI and I figured I'd done well to get there. That was about 15 months ago and I'm now 10kg lighter, its just come off really really really slowly without my really trying. So you may find you get there in the end without undue effort anyway.
  18. I am will have my surgery on August 01, 2013 at Little Company of Mary Hospital in the Chicago Metro area. I have Fibro, degenerative disc disease, bilateral carpal tunnel and bilateral plantar fasciitis, and Migraine headaches. I was on heavy duty medication and could not tolerate them. I am hoping to have a successful VSG!!! I have had Fibro since 1992. I was a police officer and sustained a series of injuries on the job. I have been struggling with my weight ever since. Besides having a family history of obesity and obesity related death, the various meds used to treat my pain have resulted in my weight problems. Beside FM, I have sleep apnea, bilateral carpal tunnel and plantar fasciitis, degenerative disc disease, chronic fatigue, Migraines, high blood pressure and cholesterol I think I am realistic about my upcoming surgery. Even though I have heard that weight loss reduces the symptoms of Fibromyalgia, I am undergoing surgery to improve my overall health and reduce my obesity related risks. If my Fibro gets better, that will be a wonderful benefit. If my Fibro gets worse, then that is anticipated possible side effect.

    Itchy itchy itchy

I have Psoriasis, which causes my body to break out in incessant itches from time to time. From what I've experienced the best way to relieve the itchies, is to take a cool to lukewarm shower, Cold or Hot Water will irritate your skin. After your shower, take some oatmeal, mix it with warmish water till you have a goopy sort of consistency, and spread it on the affected area, leave it for about 10-15 minutes, then wash it off with lukewarm water. It's gross, but It works.
  22. Good Luck Susie! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. 10 Lbs is terrific for 2 weeks girl! Way to go.. Keep updates coming when you can.

Your yogurt: 160 calories, 11 grams Protein, 2.3 grams fat, 19 sugar, 20 carbs. I'd personally go with a lower cal version . Dannon makes a light and fit, double protein blended (including the coconut) with 80 cals, 0 fat, 9 carbs, 7 sugar and 12 protein. It's delicious. That said, if you are under calories and carbs and you love this particular yogurt, eat it. It's fine.

    Getting cold feet

I posted this in another topic, but it applies here too. It's normal to be scared and having second thoughts. If you weren't having second thoughts, you probably have not thought through this completely! I was close to backing out about two weeks ago, and my surgery is now 10 days away. This is a major life changer, and you should definitely look at all aspects of a life change before you do it. You've done that - now it's time to reaffirm to yourself why you are doing this. Think about how much better you are going to feel, not only with your body but with your head! Remind yourself that tons of people can't get this far or don't WANT to get this far about changing thier life. You are strong enough to have taken the step to get here. Believe in your own decision, don't second guess yourself. It IS the right move to make, I am now positive of that. You know how I got my confidence? Because one of my sisters kept trying to talk me out of it. She gave the false impression of "I'm just trying to help you and I will be there for you" but every time I talked to her she was subtly trying to get me to not do it. Mostly from jealousy, I firmly believe. In justifying myself to her, I realized that I did want to do this, it was for me and NO ONE ELSE. I told her last weekend that if she couldn't support me, then she shouldn't call me anymore. She was shocked, saying that she did support me and was only giving me options. I told her that her options were undermining my determination and resolve and she was making me feel bad. She got offended and hung up (shrug). I haven't talked to her in a week and I don't really care. Let her have her crazy diets and fads - I'm going for the long haul. Kymba, it will be all right. You need to go read the success stories and write down why you are doing this and what you expect to happen that is good and wonderful. You can do this, we all are here for you! Carlene
