September surgery buddies!!
Hope4NewMe replied to Slwhurst's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That will certainly help - yay! Any good flavors you think will be yummy? My office only gave me 4 shakes total, so for cost effectiveness I'm jealous but for options I'm glad I got to chose my own. So when is your surgery date? Must be really soon, exciting! Good luck with the FMLA. Hopefully its just being extra slow. I start my 2 week diet a week from monday, so I'm still just in waiting mode and a cheerleader for those of you going first. Sept is almost here finally! Welcome! It's exciting that sept is finally almost here. I'm excited too but I will probably be more nervous the closer it gets. I'm ready though! -
This is exactly what I did. I went from the high salt nicotine to zero nicotine and had zero symptoms of giving up nicotine. It was like magic. It took three weeks for me to test nicotine and cotinine free on the Amazon strip tests, and at 4 weeks, I also tested negative on the blood test ordered by the surgeon's office.

Wanted to recommend a product! i ordered some Millie’s Sipping broth and they are fantastic. Really lovely savory flavors while being low carb, low calories. These will be a great addition when I am in the liquid phase. i got four packets with three broth bags each - Tomato Basil, Spicy Tortilla, Thai Lemongrass, and Delight Pho The flavors really hit that mental satisfaction for food with me. Comfort in a cup!

Good morning from sunny SoCal! I'm now 4 days post-op. Yesterday was the first day the surgeon wanted me on 'cloudy liquids' (pureed soups + protein supplements), and I did really well with that. I measured out the soup and shakes and made them last almost a half hour. The Baritastic app says I got 61g of protein (close to target... very good for a first day on shakes though, eh?) and 483 calories. Movement was really good as well. I have a repeating timer that goes off every 30m to remind me to get up and move for a couple mins. Doesn't feel like much at the time, but by the end of the day, 4m/h times 16h is just over an hour of total movement. I feel good when I do it. One day when I lose more weight and my knee and back pain go down, I'll be able to go on significant walks again, but baby steps. My low weight of the year was 369.9 the morning before surgery, and I've been in the 370s since then because I'm puffy and gassy still, but I trust I'll see the 360s again soon. So many vitamins and new BP meds to coordinate that I ordered a cute pill organizer from Amazon that will be here next week. Right now they bottles are all in a single bag, so it's a lot of rifling through to find things.

so, as of now, i am not taking any vitamin supplements whatsoever, and i'm 10 days post op. my surgeon says that 4 weeks after the surgery, i'll have to do a blood test to see what i'm lacking then to suplement it. i have no issue with that, it's very rational imo, but i've never heard it be done that way in forums or YouTube videos. everyone just talks about how important it is to take the supplements, yet here am i not taking a single pill, and i'm doing well. is anyone experiencing / has experienced this same protocol?

Was my surgery successful?
DaisyAndSunshine replied to Missfreespeech's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I never lost my hunger either. Only the first 2 weeks or so because of the recovery. I always got hunger signals after 2 weeks or so. And I am actually grateful for the signals since I usually eat only when I get those signals. It felt natural and appropriate for me to follow my physical hunger cues than otherwise. One should definitely not rely on not being hungry to lose weight. Yes it helps many who don't get those cues. But many of us will have physical hunger. Long term success is training your head around the new life style. Trust me, being diligent will help you stay on track in the long run. I wish you all the best. -
That's a great result. I've lost 23 and a half pounds since August 9th, so that's pretty good. Congrats! I can't wait to go under 100 kilos (220 pounds), but that may not happen until next week.

How painful is gastric sleeve post-op?
LookingForward22 replied to LaLaLand's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Everyone is different, but this is my experience. I was given meds before surgery to help with after. Immediately after surgery I had gas pain, as expected. It was notable, but manageable and it disappeared quickly. In the hospital they gave me a muscle relaxer (made me sleepy), medicine for nerve pain (had that for three days post release), and Tylenol. I also woke up from surgery with a binder on. I was walking and moving pretty easily that day, I was sore… but honestly once the gas pain dissipated, it was really manageable. I was there over night, and walking pretty normally by discharge. I’d say I mostly had discomfort - certainly pain if I moved around to quickly (bend or reach) but it was not sustained. I also used heat packs in the hospital and shortly after - and ice packs on my incision where my stomach came out and over areas of the nerve pain. Today I’m 10 days out… I still experience some mild nerve pain (but not bad at all). Of my 5 incisions, only the one where the removal was is at all tender around the incisions area - but that’s more of an intense bruise feeling. I still wear my binder as it helps keep the skin pulling but I carry a lot of my weight in my abdomen. I take Tylenol occasionally - but really needed all the time. -
In order to burn fat consistently you will need to induce Ketosis. Reduce carbs, avoid breads, sugars, and starches. Increase protein!! Try adding in MCT oil to your daily plan. Helps your body burn fat faster. I get 80 to 100 grams of protein daily. I've lost 5lbs this week alone. It isn't easy, but so worth it!!!

Hey its been 2 weeks, thought I'd check in. Things any easier? Pain letting up yet? Sent from my SM-G973U1 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Hi everyone! 6 week update! Since my surgery (7/12) I'm down 35 lbs and 6 BMI points! I feel a lot more satisfied now that I'm able to eat soft foods. My issue is more with the healing, and getting used to, the hiatal hernia repair. Pic on the left is the day after surgery. The other picture is of my husband and me on a date last weekend. Huge difference! NSV: reduction to BP meds, could *almost* fit a regular towel all the way around my waist I regret nothing! I feel great@ Sent from my SM-S908U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

It's hard in the beginning to reach the liquid goal, but it gets better with time. I had my surgery two and a half weeks ago, and I can reach it now. Still don't reach the protein goal, though, mostly due to my aversion to protein drinks and powders. Do you have a large incision? I have four tiny cuts and they don't hurt.

Hi I had my VSG on 7/19/22. I did not experience the hunger because I was not able to keep down water for 2 days. The worst! However, it got much better on the 3rd day. I weigh myself every Monday as a gauge to stay on track. I also measure myself for non-scale victories (NSV) as this helps me to not just focus on the scale. I did hit the 3 week stall but pushed through by walking/drinking more.

I loveeeeeee their milk so I ordered the protein drinks like 4 cases strawberry vanilla & chocolate . I had the duodenal switch, so I can start those drinks 1 week after postop, looking forward to it!

Hello everyone, I have a question that I hate to ask but is there anyone that has experienced at least the step three or four diet that still takes super small bites and waits minutes in between each one or will I eventually be able to eat bigger bites? I have this fear that I might bite off more than I can chew literally when I’m able to eat solid foods and would love some feedback! Thanks I’m advance

I am currently dealing with that issue. It's been going on for nearly 2 months. The surgeon insisted it was anxiety, which seems to be the go to diagnosis for a lot of things. She put me on Ativan for a week and when I reported back that there's no change, her office scheduled me for an endoscopy with GI. Unfortunately that's not until October 4th.

I’m 4 weeks post-op now but around the second week I also had pains when I bent over or sat straight up, always at the same spot. I couldn’t sit at a table for too long because of it. My surgeon prescribed me a muscle relaxer, which helped, and it eventually subsided. I tried to make sure I was sitting up every now and then but mainly sat in a recliner so I could lean back a bit and relieve the pressure.

How painful is gastric sleeve post-op?
ThinIce replied to LaLaLand's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 7 weeks post op today, so happily losing weight with pain a distant memory. However, my recollection is that my worst pain was horrible back muscle spasms as I woke up from anesthesia. This lasted for a few hours. Nurses told me I was on the surgical "board" for quite a long while due to complications elsewhere and I believe it. I struggle to lay on any sort of flat surface due to my "curves." Just doing the dexa scan was torture and I was deep breathing the whole time just to get through it. The tech felt sorry for me it was so hard for me to get up afterwards. Told her hopefully the 6 month post op scan will be much better since my butt will be so much smaller! Anyway, while inpatient they gave me tordol IV for the pain which has always been my favorite for incisional pain - but you can only have so many doses. They sent me home with hydrocodone which I took very little of. -
Same here, I don't know why they can't make bariatric chewable vitamins better. It is crazy, regular vitamins are fine... makes no sense. Regardless, my team wasn't too worried about me missing them in the first 2 weeks and then cleared me to take capsules at my 2 week follow up. They did explain that if I struggled with the capsules to reach out because then it becomes more serious. Luckily I have been perfectly fine with capsules and pills. Whew. Reach out to your team, maybe they can help or suggest something. Also, there are different brands you could try. I hated them all though, couldn't do it.

Hi there, My VSG was July 12. I have had hunger but not from the beginning. For me it seems to be associated with Carbs. Try to stay low on carbs. Drink lots of water (as much as you can). I am finally at my 3 week stall (Week 6) and it is frustrating. I'll try to be patient but this would be where I would normally decide screw it, I'm working hard and no progress. Luckily, I can't very well say that now cuz I can't eat much no matter what I feel like. I'll hang in there for the journey. I'm certain it gets better and I'm glad I can't say screw it this time.

I am a week post op... I am back to coffee...lol. I haven't had issue with my stomach or anything, thank god!

Hi everyone! My VSG was done on July 28. I would love to stay connected to people on a similar timeline as well. Is anyone else experiencing hunger? I felt it immediately in recovery in the hospital and it is real stomach growling hunger. I am taking my PPI. I think I’m weighing myself too much (daily) and am at the 3 week stall. Wish you all good luck.

I know this isn’t a new topic but I’m in a lot of distress about this. I woke up from surgery on July 28, 2022 literally with my stomach growling. I started out weighing 203lbs, had taken the online classes a year prior and gotten a call from the surgeon on a Monday asking me if I’d like to have surgery that Thursday. He had an opening. I was not prepared at all but decided to do it. I wonder if not having done the liquid diet ahead of time contributed to my hunger? Regardless, I eat about 500 calories a day and small meals every 3 hours or so to kill the constant hunger I do take the PPi and even Prilosec as recommended on here. Does the hunger go away? I’m in the 3 week stall as well :/. I’ve only lost 16 pounds. My spirits are low right now. I don’t get that full feeling I just portion out 1/4-1/2 cup or small oz servings to know how much to eat. Food never feels trapped in my throat or anything. I hear that people have to force themselves to eat I read that the key to success with the gastric sleeve is loss of hunger and satiety and I have neither. Has my surgery been unsuccessful?

20 moths out and I think Im in maintenance ?
Betty1971 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello everyone! I am 20 months post VSG and for the most part I would say its been successful! I was able to donate a kidney to my daughter in January and she is doing GREAT! My hubby is 3 months post VSG and absolutely killing it! I am very happy for the most part. I have changed my goal weight a couple times and really wanted to get at a 125 or 130 but my body is just holding on to the last 10 pounds! I have tried all the tricks to get things rolling, upping my calories a tad, more exercise, less exercise and even did a three day protein shake restriction just to see if that would bump me out of this. I have a tummy tuck with muscle repair scheduled in November. My team told me this is just where my body is comfortable, he called it my new set point. Has anyone been able to knock off that last few pounds without a super crazy calorie deficit. Now that I only have the one kidney I am very aware of what goes in and out of my body and I don't want to do it any harm. I am keeping my protein at 100 grams per the nephrologist and nutritionists request and my calories run about 1300 a day. The math tells me I should still be in loss mode, but clearly I am not. I also keep telling myself that I am no longer overweight and I do not need to hyper focus on that damn scale!!!! BUT watching my hubby drop so many pounds makes me really really want that end goal! Anyway they set me up for my tummy tuck (flur de les with muscle repair) for November and I am excited for that :) -
Sorry you are having these feelings. Have you ever had a surgery before? I feel like people who never have had any type of surgeries are more paranoid about everything related to surgery. My sister in law actually started having panic attacks after she had endometriosis treatment, a very mild surgery. They had to prescribe her anxiety meds but it eventually passed after a few weeks. Just try to relax, trust me (us) if something is wrong you will know it. Otherwise, give your body time to heal, follow your plan and listen to your team. I hope this is short term lived for you as well, our minds really know how to play games on us!
