  1. So I start my pre-op diet tomorrow and it's an extended pre-op diet because I have such a high BMI and fatty liver syndrome. So it's twenty days of these specially formulated Protein shakes from Minogue Medical, and a maximum of 250 calories worth of low glycemic vegetables a day. Up until this point, I have spent so much time doing research, picking up ideas on foods to make after my surgery and getting myself as familiar as I can with everything, but now that I'm the day before my pre-op diet, I'm starting to think... "this is actually happening" and I'm getting exceptionally nervous. I know this pre-op diet is going to be really hard, but I also know that I can do it. It's just now I realize that I'm less than three weeks away from getting on a plane and flying to Mississauga, where I'll have my surgery and it's making me incredibly anxious. Does anyone have any tips or tricks on how to deal with pre-op nerves? Maybe any tips on how to stay focused and not "cheat" while on the pre-op diet? Any help would be great. Thanks, Rachel

    Reassurance

So I'm kind of in the same position. I am losing. But so very slowly!! Surgery was 12/18 and I'm down 30 pounds. I only have 40 more to hit my goal wait and so frustrated that I'm only going down 1-2 pounds a week. I have recently learned to stay away from the scale!! It is not my friend. While I've only lost 30 since surgery..40 before... I have gone from a size 20/22 jeans down to a 14 2 weeks ago and today bought a size 12!!! They fit... I can even breath and don't even have to lay down to zip them!! So even though the scale numbers are not where I want I still feel as if this journey is working and was so worth it!! I'm hoping the numbers on the scale start going down like the have on the clothes tags!! Hang in there!

    Plateaus...

There are many theories about plateaus, and bottom line, you have to live with them. My trainer says it isn't really a plateau if it is less than 3 weeks at standstill, it is just the body adjusting. I wanted to believe it. She always cranks up my cardio a bit and looks at my food log to make sure I haven't increased my salty food intake which causes water shifts. Some weeks I would gain one and then lose 2 in a couple of days with no obvious reason!!! Also, taking weekly measurements is very important for morale. The weeks the scales didn't move the tape measure did and was very reassuring. Congratulations on your loss so far and best wishes. Mimi

    Plateaus...

Thank you for the responses. I already knew most of it, I guess I just needed to be reminded. I was denied a fill at my last appt. as well. I was really hoping for one to get through the holidays without too much temptaion. Today I was very glad to not have had that fill. I felt very tight today, could not eat much of anything. I am also just ending my period and I believe that may have something to do with my lack of loss in the past week and the tightness today. Thanks again. Keep up the good work and break through those plateaus!

    Old Habits!?

@@SimplySam2015, congratulations at your tremendous progress! I bet you feel so much better already. Definitely eating more Protein will help you satisfy that hungry feeling and will assist in breaking your stall. Good luck!
  6. I am 5 weeks post op and have not had any port pain since about week 2. Now I am feeling periodic pinching type pain when sitting or getting up. I thought it was from my jeans rubbing but it has not gone away. It is more uncomfortable then hurting. Is this normal? I don't recall doing anything that would have caused the pain. Has anyone else experienced this?
  7. I would suggest not stocking up TOO much on Protein powders/shakes. Many people have reported that what they loved prior to surgery, they hated after surgery, so I'd hate to see you get stuck with any. I'm a bargain shopper so for me getting good prices on things was super important... I looked around online for all the best prices on the Vitamins I'd need post op and stocked up. I also got the acid reducer ompezerole that my doctor recommended when it was on sale at walgreens. Gasx strips were a life saver because my stomach had a lot of gas for the first week or so. Honestly, I didn't really worry about packing everything for surgery and I went all the way to Mexico for it. The biggest thing I did was prepare my body for surgery. I was on an 800 calorie diet for three months preop and I made sure to get at least 70 grams of protein a day along with taking vitamins. I also added some kale and ginger juice to my Protein drinks for three months prior to surgery and made sure I had lots of leafy greens and I avoided grains for the three months prior to surgery. I just wanted to bathe myself in protein, micronutrients, and anti-inflamatory foods as much as possible prior to surgery in order to have speedy healing time. I don't know if it worked, but I can say that I had very little inflammation of my sleeve post surgery... Could be a fluke, but I like to think it was a combination of having a fantastic surgeon, taking my daily kale and ginger juice, and making sure my body was not in any way Vitamin or protein deficient prior to surgery.

    Wait, what????

So guys. HOW did I lose 5 pounds in 1 day??? I mean, I was expecting to be a little heavier because of all the fluids from the IV for 2 days, but instead, I'm actually down 5 pounds??? I'm not knocking it, of course, but it caught me off guard lol I'll be weighing myself once a week. I refuse to do daily weigh ins and get upset when it fluctuates a pound or so either way. I've been struggling with gas pain, and thanks to the great suggestions, my husband went out and got me a heating pad and it's starting to help. Also having pain from the incisions, but I was already expecting that. And the PAIN from taking my pills was the worst of all. BUT, I started taking them with warm broth and it's been a game changer. Still takes me almost an hour to take them since I get full really fast, but at least it's pain free taking them now.
  9. Hello John, Did I read right? Your surgery has been delayed by 2 weeks? I'm on the home run, surgery on Tuesday,11th July. As I'm diabetic I'm the 1st patient on the day,I resent the 7am show up, but then its better this way isn't it? I won't be stressing the whole day waiting for my time I've been given. Good luck with the diet they've given you as you have another 2 week wait. Incidentally, what are you consuming on your diet ?
  10. Hey geets, You'd be daft if you weren't nervous, it's the big unknown ahead of us. I've been doing the Pre-op for a week and, whilst I'm not on liquids this might be easier, I'm using it as a kind of food mindfulness training. I think that, knowing surgery is coming up, I'm more focussed on it... and otherwise I'm just trying to keep myself busy. Let us know how you're going. Best, Jx

    Banded today!

Have you tried the Gas X strips for the shoulder pain. They helped me alot. Moving around also helps. But you need to rest some too. Good luck. I am just one week out now. Still alittle sore at my port site. But much better.

    no Ibuprofen after surgery?

My surgeon allows NSAIDS. I started taking them about 6 or 7 weeks post op. He does not allow it for RNY. It's one of the main reasons I chose this surgery. I take ibuprophen just about daily, though I try to limit it as much as possible for other reasons (hard on kidneys). I usually take about 400 mg daily.
  14. Today marks 14 days since my sleeve surgery and I am happy to report I have lost 20 pounds! I started this journey 12 months ago when I was weighed by my doctor's office during a routine check-up and weighed 288. I am 6 feet tall. That was the most I had weighed in my life and I decided it was time to take action. I was referred to a local sleeve surgeon who immediately put me on the South Beach Diet to lose weight pre-op. Because of insurance I was required to wait a certain time and follow certain guidelines. Well, two weeks ago I had the surgery and despite some complications afterward that required a second procedure I am home now resting and recovering. I am pain free and adjusting to my new body. I would like to meet other people here and share experiences. By the way today I weigh 245 pounds!

    Kidney Stones

Yep, had 3 bouts post-op - NEVER had them pre-op. So much pain the first two times I had to get an oxycodone RX, the third time there was NO pain but my urine was the color of rose wine ! I started drinking a LOT more Water to keep my kidneys flushed and also started drinking an EmergenC drink - an OTC Vitamin C drink 3 times a week, like the cranberry juice mentioned above it works by largely passing the Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) unabsorbed which acidifies the urine and helps block the stones from forming.
  16. My surgeons office called and I got approved from the insurance (it only took 1 week). I have just got to get them a letter from my cardiologist to say I am clear and I can schedule my surgery. I went to the cardiologist because I was having irregular heartbeats during pregnancy. They said it was dehydration so there should not be a problem. YIPEEEEEE!!! I am on my way:thumbup:
  17. Hey! Don't be ashamed about slowing down. I started feeling that way too but then I joined a gym. Trust me - I was very nervous about joining. But it was AWESOME! I love it! I could work out every day if I could. I like to go atleast 4 times a week. I would recomend starting out at a smaller gym. They are more comfortable feeling and ALL types of people go. Not just the skinny minis. Anywho! Good Luck! Remember - we all have messed up before - that's why we had the surgery. You can change things around! Believe in yourself.

    Piercings

I noticed you had surgery the same day as me. My nutritionist and doctor both said I could try solids after 2-3 weeks and although I still have no appetite yet, I have been trying little bites of meat such as turkey, pork chop, and roast beef. They seem to go down ok as I have no problem or pain with them. My doctor said don't eat if your not hungry so I feel guilty for eating them, but I know I need protien and eat nothing else. What is your post op diet, and have you tried any solids yet? Do you have any hunger pains yet? I'd appreciate any information you could give me on your experience if you don't mind sharing. Thanks

    Postponed

At least you weren't already over a week into your pre-op liquid diet or something! Definitely does suck to have to change all your plans and wait an extra week, though.

    Incisions

Hello everyone, today is my 4 week sleeve anniversary and I weighed in at 235.7, dropped 35lbs. I am so very happy that I made this decision. It's days like this that out weighs that little voice I hear sometimes telling me that I would never be able to eat like others, but that's fine because I'm not like others, but soon I will be looking like others! April sleevers rock!!!!

    Cancelled surgery?

I thought the same thing cause I enjoyed a cocktail often .what if I get into surgery and they say I have a fatty liver and I wake up and they couldn't do it ,everything worked out fine now 3 weeks post op your not alone seems a lot of us share the same fears good luck with your surgery
  22. Hi everyone, I attended the weight loss seminar in December and decided to wait till the first of the year to get the ball rolling. I had my first appointment with the NP and my PSY eval on January 10, 2011. I finally got a call yesterday that they were submitting everything to insurance and I will start my 4 WEEK Nutrition classes March 7, 2011. I am assuming my surgery will be the first or second week of April! I am scared but not about the surgery or the after part. I am afraid to be put under anesthesia. I HATE it. I know it is safe but I am still worried. My husband is Amazing and has stood by me while deciding on moving forward with Lap Band. He just wants me to be healthy. A little about me. I am originally from RI and moved to Ohio when my husband completed his NAVY commitment. I have tried WW, a program at our local YMCA (biggest loser) was a 8 week program I lost 8 pounds but now have regained that 8 plus another 9. I have been struggling with infertility for over 6 years now, and can only hope that Lap band will help with our journey to become parents. We are approved for an Open adoption also and are waiting for a birthmother to contact us. Look forward to making some new friends on here
  23. Hello everyone I am in my very early stages of Pre op I am ordered to wait 2-3 months before I begin my appointments with the NUT and the Psychologist etc. Meanwhile I have been reading and researching like crazy!!!! The few that I have shared this interest with recommend I eat smaller portions and do it the natural way~ this only causes me more frustration because I can NOT do this on my own! I have tried, I am trying with little success I am 5'3 255lbs~ I seem to go up 5lbs and drop 5lbs I attend a kickboxing academy 3-4x a week and utilize MYFITNESSPAL to track my meals~ { add me sensationallysassyt} My question is what has made the sleeve a success for you when so many other diets have failed in the past? What can I do to prepare myself for success both Pre and post op for not only weight loss but for a healthier lifesyle as well??? Thanks T~

Would i know if I slipped?

I was on liquids for 2 weeks post op and then a week of runny mushies... so I am guessing the oatmeal and or potatoes may have just been too much to fast... Also If I eat right after sleeping I have all sorts of problems. You are healing now... I cannot imagine the band slipped but hopefully your dr will give you an answer soon.
  25. I've been reading some of the threads and I'm concerned and confused. I had my surgery 3 weeks ago and I've been following my diet just as I was told. But I have noticed that I tend to forget to drink my liquids slowly. I'm afraid I'm might of done something wrong because I feel heartburn. It doesn't feel too bad and it does go away after a while. After reading about slippage I'm afraid that might of happened. My first filling is set for June 18, that's when I'm planning to tell my doctor about my concerns. Has anyone experience this without it being slippage?
