Hard to lose 9 lbs by December 16tj
ms.sss replied to blackgirlmagicrnybypass's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It can be done. I was able lose 11.8 lbs during the 2 week pre-op diet, doing 2-3 shakes a day. It was a little challenging the first 3 days or so (in terms of wanting to eat something), but after that I got used to it, and it was much easier. You have about 3 weeks until the 16th, so you don't have to go as drastic. Did your team say what would happen if you don't lose the 9 lbs? (not that you can't, of course) -
What kind of foods can you have during the first week after surgery?

Donna66, good luck today, you are probably in your procedure or about to head in if your timing worked like mine. I was banded a week ago tomorrow, and as with any surgical procedure, there are apprehensions going in. The docs may perceive this as as being 'routine', but it is never routine when it is happening to you!. The worst part of the trip was the ride home, my wife was trying to avoid every bump and pothole .. I told her that swerving out of the way of a pothole and getting in a wreck was not worth it! I had a little discomfort and slept a lot the first two days, just take your pain meds and rest up while your body recovers. I am back at work on day 6 but I have a job where I mostly work from my home office, so I have the ability to get comfortable and still get some things done. I hope your experience post op is as good as mine has been, pain is gone, only thing lingering a bit is some lower back pain, likely from some lingering gas. The gas was the most uncomfortable part! Hope things go well for you over the next few days as you start your new journey!

@@banded4change I just had my surgery (also had a hernia) on Dec 4 and Dec 9 is the first day I have felt like I could have gone to work. I've been worried about going back to work all week, but hoping things are finally turning around now. Hang in there and give yourself a few more days.

Work/Sleeve Balance
DeanieG replied to heartfeltlaugh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a desk job and am hoping to be scheduled for my surgery by the end of September. I'm planning to take a week off and then go back to work. I'm expecting to be tired but at least when I get home, I only have to worry about taking care of me and my 2 dogs! I'm planning to have all my housework taken care of before I have the surgery so that I won't have to worry about cleaning. -
Depression post surgery
BrentinLA replied to thinoneday's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've had a couple of operations, not including my upcoming WLS next week, and always find myself a bit out of sorts for at least a week after surgery. Here's what I attribute the depression to: a. You've just had surgery--your body has been through a huge workout, so to speak. You've had medications, been put under, have had pain meds, blood thinners, etc. b. The whole ordeal is stressful: hospitals, machines, monitors, etc. c. You are in pain or discomfort. d. Your daily routine is out of whack. e. You may need help with things. f. You don't feel like yourself. ...and a lot of other immediate changes. If you think about it, it all makes sense that you would be a little depressed, or at least a little emotional. I know I'm always a little down in the dumps after a procedure..and it's probably normal. -
I'm preop. There have been a couple delays in the process but I can deal. I've done the orientation session and started attenging a support group and have been hanging out with all you lovely folks here. So, back in October, I decided to start tracking what I'm eating in preparation for both my RD appointment and my postop life. My goal wasn't to even pay attentiion to whether I was gaining or losing, but simply to track as honestly as I could, every choice I made about food, good, bad, or indifferent. And my other goal was to pay attention to when I was comfortably full, and stop there, instead of continuing to eat simply because something tasted good. This morning was my RD appt. I stepped on the scale - and I've lost 8 lbs in 6 weeks. Three of those were over Thanksgiving weekend. Go figure! So I went to my RD appt. and handed her a printed copy of my journal notes. She was very happy to see what I've been writing, noticing, aware of, etc. Cool! And then I called my surgeon's office. I had to change surgeons before I actually saw the first one. The first one wouldn't see me until after both the RD and psych appts. (my health plan doesn't require this, but the Program does). The second surgeon is happy to see me first. I have my appt. 12/22. Cool!

Hi all! First of all, I'd like to say thank you to all who have posted and shared their WL journey. I have been lurking here gleaning as much info as possible. I guess it's time I share! I am 53 years old. With a BMI of 40 and several co-morbidities. I have tended to be a little heavy all of my adult life, but never as extreme as in the last 10 years, in which time I have gained 100 lbs. At this time I have attended 3 seminars.....OK, I am a slow learner. The first one- I thought "oh how extreme!, If I can't control what I eat now, how could I with WLS". And, "My Dr. would never go along with it". And, "I could never afford it!" The second seminar was after much research and a hospitalization over my heart-resulting in my PCP recommending WLS. That is when I discovered that the closest WLSC (one hour away in Southern OR) was not COE rated, which is a requirement of my insurance. The third seminar was a webinar for WLSC 4 hours away, to the south in Chico, CA. I am willing to go the distance for surgery and fills, however they don't have any type of "medically supervised diet, exercise or behaviour modification program" which is a requirement by by insurance plan (GEHA). Six months within the last 12 months I have to have documentation of the "medically supervised" diet and exercise. I saw my PCP at end of November (when he recommended WLS), however hadn't been to see him at all in previous 12 months, so have to start from then. I also saw him in December, so that I could add that to the record, but he really doesn't know what he is supposed to be documenting. He said that if he codes for "obesity" the insurance doesn't pay. I may have to just self-pay for these visits so the insur. will cover surgery. I have seen others refer to the 6 month "medically supervised diet " but never any specifics, like how do I document this. I really am ready for this surgery now, am willing to go through the 6 months of diet, but want to make sure I am doing it right so the Insurance covers! Also, would like to have an actual "program" so that I can feel some progress! Any ideas out there? (Thanks for listening to me babble on!)

September Bandsters Nickname Poll

I took a week off. I was still sore when I returned to work. Coughing, standing up without being hunched over, laughing, and swallowing all hurt so bad. I have a semi physical job where I chase toddlers and have to lift things normally so I was just an extra set of eyes in the room for 3 weeks. It gets better after about weeks with hernia repair I think.

I was on a 2 week liquid diet and it was very hard especially the first 3 days. I had to cook meals for my husband and 3 teenage sons too. I stayed busy and I kept telling myself that its very worth all the hunger and cramps and it was the last diet I would ever be on. With each day it did get easier. YOU can do this. Good Luck!

HOW long term is the gastric sleeve ?
AvaFern replied to anewmee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my experience, it is what you make it. While yes, your stomach is gone forever, the benefits are not forever. Most people many years out have learned to eat around the sleeve so that if they did not learn good food habits while they had restriction, they just return to their old ways. I am three months short of three years out from surgery. I hit goal in April of last year and I have maintained within 3-4 pounds. This morning I woke up a few ounces heavier than usual, so today I get to pay more attention to my food and exercise. Every single day is going to be a fight for the rest of your life, although the sleeve makes it substantially easier. I am never going to get to go on vacation for a week, eat whatever I want like those damn naturally skinny people do, and come back and have gained no weight. I could easily gain 5-8 pounds in a week if I ate sweets, which is my big "gain weight fast" food. Because I like being thin, I don't eat sweets anymore. I wake up and I weigh myself every morning. I missed a day in MyFitnessPal about 2 weeks ago and broke a 230+ day streak, so the last two weeks I haven't been recording my food intake, but really I don't need to anymore. I know what I can and cannot eat. This time three years ago I was 237-ish pounds, I could not manage to lose weight, and I was ashamed and miserable. This morning I weighed 132.8 pounds, I have a closet full of clothes that are 0-4, and I feel like a different person. The sleeve is not something that will make you thin and happy forever, but rather it is something that makes it a lot easier for you to reach and maintain a healthy weight if you are willing to make the sacrifices to do so. Where I live it is 95 degree outside already, I do NOT want to go workout, but in a little bit, I'm going to spray myself with sunscreen, whine as I get into workout clothes, and get my butt outside. I'll log my food today because I gained a bit over the weekend, I'll probably do my ab video, and I won't have any dessert at the Memorial Day party this afternoon. Sure, the sleeve made it easier to get to this size, but at this point the only thing keeping me here are my own daily decisions. So, the sleeve itself is forever, the benefits it provides are great the first year or two and then slowly drop, but you have the potential to use the tool to your advantage to achieve and maintain good health. In the end, it's entirely up to you- not what happens to be left of your stomach. -
Penni! Wow! Thats excellent! :clap2: And here you were posting about how you dont think you'll lose weight this week. Heck, that probably burned off 10 pounds! Now.. just dont eat until after next Sat's weigh in! LOL

Trying To Learn Everything I Can...
vanb0052 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all!! I have been pursuing these message boards for a couple of weeks now and finally decided to join. Here is a little about me...I recently turned 30 years old and am currently at 370 lbs (I'm 6', and carry my weight pretty well). Luckily I do not have a lot of medical complications due to my weight...yet! I just found out that our company is changing insurance plans next year to Medica, which will cover bariatric surgery. I've already signed up for an information session with Park Nicollet, which is next week. Currently I'm still in debating over the gastric sleeve or the RNY bypass. As I'm just starting, I'm really looking for any information that you think would be helpful. I'm not even sure if I know what questions to ask. Thank you all in advance for your support and help! -
I am so excited I can't wait and I am not sure if I am going to be able to sleep tonight. I am going alone, and that is how I want it. Just peace and quiet and recovery! Anyone else going to be in Juarez this week?

liquid diet life
jessicawinston replied to Mary Johnson's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today is day 2 of my liquid diet. I feel so emotional. Thank goodness no one tells me I can't do it. As a matter of fact my sister is so supportive she is doing the liquid diet with me. I keep thinking 12 more days till I'm banded. I can say I'm not really starving I just feel so drained. I know if I can't do it for two weeks how can I change my life and eat right. Tomorrow I have a wedding to go to this should be interesting. I'm not sure if I can tackle staying away from food around others. I will also start to cook tomorrow TESTS lol -
Okay so I'm about 3 weeks post op, and today I noticed that the right side, under my rib cage is is slightly tender and rock hard. I think it may be my liver, just from an anatomical aspect. I have no incisions nearby, so I know it's not my port or anything like that (that I can feel under the port incision, so I'm really sure about that). Any thoughts? Like I said, mildly sore, but really hard, so I'm not sure if this is normal or if I should worry. Has this happened to anyone else?

I had a stall for a few weeks and then lost 2 3/4 pounds, stall over! I have a gym membership to Planet Fitness and before I moved I was there 3or 4 times a week. Now I don't live close to the gym and have barely gone, my fault sort of. Since I moved my knees have been bothering me so much more than before. Tomorrow I start my Synvisc injections and I pray to god they work so I can put off double knee replacement surgery. In the hopes that all goes well, I bought a really nice recumbent bike to use at home. I rode it tonight for 30 minutes and my knees were clicking the majority of the time and now I'm hurting pretty good. Hopefully this pain is worth the effort. Surgery date: 1/8/15 Weight lost: 60 pounds
