Sleeve to Bypass due to GERD
beaker27 replied to beaker27's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Oh no! I have a hiatal too! I didnt realize that would be so painful. Such a long road for us, having revisions. You'd think the acid reflux would go away by now. -
Reflux remains after revision 😩

Hi I am in Los Angeles area as well. I had the lap band in 2009 but before I was banded I had my gallbladder removed. The lap band was awful so in 2013 I got a gastric sleeve. That worked fantastic until the acid reflux and Gerd. So to fix that I had a hiatal hernia repair and that did not work. So for the last 5 yrs straight I have been on prescription heartburn medication. It was so bad that I was in so much pain without meds. The medication controlled it but I didn’t want to depend on it. So I went to see My gastroenterologist and they did an upper G.I. and an endoscopy and it showed that I had a lot of acid and the only thing my surgeon said we can do with the bypass. So I just had to bypass this past Wednesday, June 24, 2020. I hope this was worth it I just read your story right now. I will be completely devastated if it wasn’t. My insurance allowed for me to have a revision. my gastroenterologist and they did a upper G.I. and an endoscopy and it showed that I had a lot of acid and the only thing my surgeon said we can do was a bypass. So I just had the bypass this past Wednesday, June 24, 2020. I hope this was worth it I just read your story right now. I will be completely devastated if it wasn’t. My insurance allowed for me to have it revision. I only stayed one night in the hospital. I am home and I’m doing well I’m on liquids but man I miss texture of food in my mouth. They put you omeprazole for three months so once I stop taking that and if the Hartmans not gone that’s it I will be devastated. I went through the Association of South Bay surgeons in Torrance bariatric program. Where do you go? -
My bypass is tommorow!! Whoohoo!! Finally!! After Covid it was pushed back! I’m ready to get this done. I hear people saying they had to do a liquid pre op diet. I didn’t. I was on a 1000 calorie diet!

Those who have lost 100% EBW esp. those vets who kept it off- what's did you do?
Foxbins replied to Suzi_the_Q's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The surgery did most of the hard work, I just helped. After my sleeve I was not hungry and my sleeve did not care for many foods I had loved when I was fat. Bread balled up in my stomach and swelled and felt awful, so I quit eating bread, muffins, cakes, biscuits, all those bready foods, pasta and rice, too. I learned to recognize when I was full and stopped before then. After three months of mostly protein I lost my taste for sweets and I figured I shouldn't tempt myself. So really my sleeve got me eating the way doctors and nutritionists say you should anyway. Protein, vegetables, fruit, some nuts, not much fat or sugar. So no secrets. Look at my signature for my stats. I love my sleeve but I have GERD now. Revising to bypass tomorrow. -

There is very little, if any, difference in weight loss performance between the sleeve and bypass; the bypass may get one to goal weight a bit faster owing to the added boost of its caloric malabsorption, but that disspates after a year or two and one tends to wind up in the same place with either procedure, and likewise, regain performance is similar between the two. The choice usually comes down to compatibility with any pre-existing conditions (GERD, at least without an obvious cause such as a hiatal hernia that can be corrected along with the surgery is usually bad news with a sleeve; being prone to ulcers or stomach polyps is bad news for a prospective bypass patient, as is need for regular use of NSAIDs.) Metabolically, if one needs something stronger than a sleeve, the DS is the way to go as it goes much farther in normalizing one's metabolism; it is unlikely that the OP, being a young(ish), tall(ish) guy of "moderate" BMI (46ish) needs to go that far, unless he has had a long history of yo-yo dieting. -
I want to hear from VSG revision to DS ppl!!
Goldy6575 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a sleeve 5 years ago, and lost 75 lbs. I have been slowly gaining recently, have gained back 25. I am having a vsg to DS revision next month. I have 75 I want to lose ( 25 regain + 50 more) . I want to hear from ppl who have had this done. What has been your experience, what was recovery like, how much have you lost since, what do you eat now?? -
Hello everyone, I have found a lot of information and helpful support here. Surgery is tomorrow. June 29th, 2020. I was ordered to do Covid 19 test to clear me for surgery. I was really nervous about the test as I heard and read so many stories saying it hurt. It did not hurt, it was quick, they swabbed both nostrils it was a weird feeling, a bit awkward like a fruit fly going up ur nose, n my eyes watered. I had to do 6 months of nutritionist visits, and since I'm near my goal weight for surgery I was told to do 3 days liquid pre op diet. Reading about how others have done for 1 and 2 weeks on liquid diet has given me strength to do my 3 days. I'm excited and nervous of what's to come. I plan on taking pics tonight for my own before and after as well as keep an eye on my diabetes type 2 and high cholesterol and improvements.

Reflux remains after revision 😩
Tracyringo replied to itzmekc's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Did your Gerd ever go away ? I wake up every morning the same as I did before the revision, burning in my chest. I have only had 2 episodes in the day time which is better then it was. I am considering buying an adjustable bed to see if that takes care of it. I am wondering if a pillow wedge might do the same ? I am going to start sleeping in the recliner a few nights and see if it makes a difference before I start buying stuff. Just wanting to know if someone out there with a revision due to Gerd has been able to get rid of it when the surgery didn't in the beginning -
Had bypass on the 24th for serious reflux

Hi I had a lapband to sleeve revision surgery on 6/15. I feel ok just tired. I’ve read others comment on here and I’m exactly the same it takes me all day to get in my protein. The only problem I’m having off and on is right side pain. It comes and goes. I’m not sure if it gas pains or what. It feels like a catch or a bad cramp then it will just go away. Have any of y’all experienced this??

I am a sleeve revision to bypass and I'm eating things I know I won't be able to eat for a long time based on my sleeve recovery--fresh cherries (they will be out of season by the time I can eat them) coconut, corn, and celery (too much fiber, not enough vitamins) and panko shrimp (too much fat). Oh, and toast. It took me a couple of years to be able to eat toast. Other than that, I'm just eating my normal diet. I'm also wondering about my presurgical protocol. My surgeon didn't tell me liquids only the day before surgery like some others here. Guess he's ready for whatever might be in there.

What actually makes the liver shrink?
GreenTealael replied to Eurocrat's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Calorie restrictions: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25411646/ I was told by my revision surgeon to think of an obese persons liver like a marbled steak (fat ribboned through out- fatty liver) and the goal is to remove that fat and make it more lean, soft and pliable so that it does not crack tear or break while manipulating it to reach the digestive system -
Revision sleeve to bypass w hiatal hernia repair
Jeep_girl1313 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I finally had my surgery on 6/24, (postponed from 4/1, thank u Covid). This surgery went 100000 times better then, then my first surgery in 11/2016 w the sleeve. I had a completely different doctor, hospital staff & support system thru my doctors office, this time. I woke up w achey pain, nothing to severe. The incision where they went in for the hernia and a lower right abdomen one were kinda sore, but nothing Ice packs couldn’t help. Came home the next day, & still nothing to severe pain wise to use anything higher then Tylenol. I’m nervous, to get over the recovery period and on to losing weight. (The sleeve was a fail for me and only lost 40lbs on it). But also excited and ready for this next chapter & life style change. :) -
What actually makes the liver shrink?
Eurocrat posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all, So this might be a stupid question. I have been wondering what the process involved in liver shrinking actually is? I'm the kind of person who feel most comfortable with new things if I can see or understand how they work. I'm having a gastric bypass on July 15 and part of my prep has been to watch surgery videos to understand the mechanics of the operation. I might be a bit of a weirdo, I know. Now I have started obsessing about the liver shrinking, scared to death that the surgeon will refuse to operate for some reason. I even taken to starting my pre-op diet early. Anyway, can someone help put my mind to rest by explaining the liver shrinking? Does it happen due to the very low calorie intake? Or is it linked to the protein shakes? Is it because food intake is liquid - and why is it that pre-op diets are liquid? -

MAY-JUNE-JULY 2020 BYPASSERS UNITE!! Veterans Welcome too!
LizzieMmmkay replied to MaybeMeow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I finally have my surgery date scheduled for July 16! I started doing the WLM and the long list of insurance requirements back in September 2019. Due to Covid getting my surgery date was delayed right as I had completed everything I needed to have done. Yet, now that I have a date I have been a ball of emotions today. I’ve been reading everyone’s posts and am happy to be able to connect with other people that have gone through or will be going through with gastric bypass. I have to admit I did the Covid slide to the dang fridge from being cooped up with 3 kids that I suddenly was responsible for teaching, along with balancing everything else during these crazy times. I had to do my meetings over the phone with my nutritionist since our group could no longer meet. I felt like it was never going to happen given the circumstances in the world right now. Thankfully before I received the call that I had been approved by my insurance and received an official surgery date today I had already started the pre-op diet to get on track a couple days ago. Good luck to everyone out there on this journey! I am so happy that I’m about to join you all on the losers bench! 5’6” HW- 319 CW-288 Goal- Anything under 200 and healthy! -
July 2020 Surgery anyone?
LizzieMmmkay replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I finally received the call today that my surgery was approved and will be on July 16 for Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. I’m a ball of emotions! I started this journey back in September 2019 to complete the long list of insurance requirements with different doctor’s & specialists, and attended WLM each month. Then Covid hit right as I had completed everything on my checklist. I have been in limbo land waiting to see what would shake out. Honestly, even though it’s overdue I was still surprised that they’re getting me in as soon as they are. I just hope nothing goes sideways from here to there with my date, because that would just be my luck at this point lol! I’m excited to get more active on here with a great group of knowledgeable people! Good luck to all you fellow July surgery patients! See you all on the losers bench! -

Sleeve to Bypass due to GERD
Tracyringo replied to beaker27's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Not only do you lose vitamins with the bypass but you also have less calories absorbed. For instance I lost 14 lbs the first month after VSG and weighed 296 day of surgery. I lost 12 lbs gastric bypass after first month and weighed 180 day of surgery. I can only imagine what I would have lost had this been my first surgery being 116 lbs heavier. Not to mention I wouldn't have erosive esophagitis D and who knows maybe GERD free ? I also had hiatal hernia repair when the did the bypass revision. It was a much more painful surgery for me. -

February 2020 Post-Op Thread
Seige replied to ResaRoo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lisa, you’ve come too far to lust for other people’s food. I have seen too many people go through bypass surgery, and put the weight back, way more rapidly, than the rate it came off. I think that’s why I put off having the sleeve procedure for so long. Get yourself together. You wouldn’t lust for someone else’s partner, and act on it! As for the hair, I’ve experienced hair loss before, after strict dieting, or surgeries. My part was getting wider and wider. At the suggestion of my dermatologist, I started taking a Hair, Skin, & Nails formula, gummy vitamin, with a high amount of Biotin. It takes about 8 weeks. You should see new, baby hairs coming in. It’s not breakage. enjoy your socializing. Savor the company. Forget the food. -
GALS who started their journey over 300 lb+<br /> +

I was 339 on 5/26 at my pre-op appt. Day of surgery was at 320 and two weeks out am at 312. I had my lapband removed are the same time as the bypass and had an allergic reaction to the skin glue. I am on my 2nd round of steroids, ugh. Hopefully this will help and get it cleared up. I go back to work on the 29th and I know my pants rubbing is going to drive me nuts all day long.
