  1. Therapy is probably good for you at this point. But definitely consult with your nutritionist to get back onto a healthier diet again. I don't eat many things that are just carbs. I try to stick to meat proteins, but I satisfy my carb needs with beans/lentils/nuts. They help satisfy me while providing more protein. Rice is usually a big no-no. As is any bread, especially with yeast. They fill your stomach up with less nutritious foods. My nutritionist allows me to eat 6-8 whole wheat crackers with meals when I want a "bread" source. I also eat very small tortilla wraps (meat/cheese inside). Once in a while I will take pretzels or tortilla chips and dip them in hummus or a bean dip. But my diet is mostly keto-ish.... high protein, low fat, very low carbs. The high fat isn't good in keto, but the fat you do eat should be healthy fats (not bacon bacon fat or the like sadly). Try to break the junk food habit! I restrain myself from eating junk most of the time. But I do allow myself the OCCASIONAL small treat. But for me, my biggest food enemy is "Cola". Pepsi/Coke are my addiction. And I do NOT drink diet. Nasty. I know I cannot ever drink it again or I will slip into all my bad habits before I know it. So... I found a flavored drink substitute that I am allowed to have: Vitamin Water Zero or Gatorade Zero. If I need something flavored to drink, I stick to those or unsweetened mint tea or something similar. Anyhow, consult your nutritionist, schedule an appointment with a therapist, and start tracking your food again and work out! And support groups are great too, if you find one that works for you. I don't like the group setting, that is why I am here on this website. But I also have a co-worker that had the surgery 4 years ago... I get a lot of support from her too. And I am advising another co-worker who is considering having surgery. Both are therapeutic for me.

    Smoking hookah

Yah, I'd be scared of the munchies, too. I don't like to smoke and prefer edibles, but all the ones I have are from pre-surgery and they have sugar in them since they are gummies. I'm afraid to eat them because I don't wanna dump! That would be a hell of a bummer, man... As many Keto dieters as there are, there must be some low carb edibles.

    Weight loss

I have personally been using the keto diet to lose weight and it's been pretty 'easy' on most days. Low carb means I can't enjoy the pasta and bread, but high protein and fat means I can still have a ton of other things. My normal daily diet, as of late, is usually a vanilla protein shake for breakfast, tuna with some mayo, sriracha, and lemon juice for lunch, and low-fat yogurt for dinner. Though, there are a ton of options -- these are just work for me and lets me hit my macros that I need. I have slipped up, but it's realizing that its one mistake and that isn't going to define your success in weight loss, is huge. You can take that mistake and continue making more, eating bad for the rest of the day, week, month, etc.. and then you will be right back where you start. The other option? Realize that you had a weak moment, don't get down on yourself too much, and move on with the RIGHT foods. You can do this!

    Fatigue!!!

I'm currently shooting for between 70-90 grams myself. But I mix extra in with one of my morning soups so that I get a great big boost early on. My morning soup has 40 grams in it with extra scoop of protein added to it. My body thrives on protein though, since I was keto 18 months prior to surgery. I know we're all different.

    Gatorade before surgery?

If you google - there have been a number of studies that show if people drink a Gatorade or like fluid with the balance of electrolytes that you recover better and faster and don't become less dehydrated. Being dehydrated makes your recovery harder and it's hard for them to put in IVs too. I couldn't personally drink it because I had been Keto 18 months prior to surgery and the sugar would have made me feel awful. I asked if they wanted to me to do a Zero one but my surgeon said it was fine not too. I did have sips of water until an hour before surgery though. But follow your surgeons guidelines and if you can't tell them.

    February Surgery ?

I had been doing keto and IF and that felt so much easier. It's hard because I have young children and a husband with a super fast metabolism so I'm the only one carrying extra weight in the house. They can eat whatever, whenever and I'm in the corner with my jello, lol. Thank you for the encouragement and best wishes for the 19th!

    Enjoying food is gone?

So I'm just starting to eat real solid foods again, and honestly, my taste buds have changed a little bit, but I really enjoy food still. Taking the time to eat slowly kinda lets me savor it? I've been experimenting with bariatric and keto recipes and I'm finding some really nice and tasty things that are well within the dietitian's guidelines. You may have a few things that don't taste as good as they used to (I'm kind of sad that fish for me doesn't taste really good), but things you didn't like before might taste good now, too (I like cooked spinach all of a sudden). It's a lot of experimenting and guessing and seeing what your new body reacts well with.

    February Surgery ?

Hi everyone! I'm a new member and my gastric sleeve surgery is scheduled for 2/18. I'm excited and terrified all at once! There is the physical aspect but this whole experience has been a real mind shift. I was just telling my husband that I am aware of how much of a complainer I am being. The liquid diet has been tough on me. I started keto/IF on 12/28 and was losing weight before it. Now this feels like torture but I know it's preparing me for what is to come, in two days, I will be in a whole other phase...looking forward to learning and experiencing this with you all.
  10. I have been a paid member of Diet Doctor for about 3.5 years now. I had some regain, had a very scary health issue and was advised by my GI doc to go Keto. I have had very VERY few issues. I have experienced Late Dumping Syndrome a few times and have to be mindful to hit my macros on point and not just ingest fat willy nilly and I'm fine. I have found that this way of eating works perfectly 5 years post VSG. I am very happy with the weight loss I experienced from eating this way plus it has kept my medical issue at bay. I often get argument from co-workers but there is a ton of science behind metabolic ketosis, around since 1920, as I'm sure you have read on Diet Doctor!
  11. 2 hours ago, AnnieD78 said: The part i am still SO SO co confused about is food and macronutrients. My dietician does not say no to anything, in moderation. Which is what I do. But prior to surgery and my whole life I have been on really extreme diets like Keto or whole 30. So moderation feels wrong or like cheating. Really struggling with my mental relationship with food right now. I also disagree! For some, that works like a charm, but others of us have reactions and inflammation caused by certain foods. I am four weeks post op and all of the cheese (cottage, ricotta) on the soft diet is killing me! I feel like this is contributing to my sloooow weight loss. I also retain water and get puffy when I eat nightshade vegetables. My suggestion would be to introduce new foods one at a time and then wait and see if you have a reaction. Cheers to all of us!
  12. Thanks for this!!! It has been nice to get back into the gym, honestly. Even though I injured my neck last week/ 😂😅🤦🏻‍♀️ The part i am still SO SO co confused about is food and macronutrients. 13. I understood weight loss is required for everyone though not linked to insurance requirements in Aust as it is in the US. Basically, the weight loss is to reduce any fattiness around your liver which allows the surgeon greater visualisation & movement around your stomach when they operate. It also shows a commitment to the weightloss program. You will be sent to a dietician who will put you on a diet & will monitor your pre surgical weight loss. They will guide you through the post surgical weight loss journey as well. I was put on a keto diet for two weeks prior to surgery & lost 4.2kgs. My BMI was 35. Your surgeon will have his requirements as will your insurance company based on your individual case. You can’t really compare. Treat this pre surgery time as when you begin to re-educate yourself & start your new lifestyle - how you eat, what you eat & new exercise routine. This is a life long change.

    Low carb diet suggestion

@FluffyChix & @AJ Tylo are right & I especially agree with the suggestion to find a team (or at least a nutritionalist) who understands what a vegetarian lifestyle entails. Carbs in foods like bread, pasta, rice, cereals have low fibre, high GI and are digested quickly. That means you’re hungry again sooner & your blood sugar levels will swing. Post WLS, carbs fill up your small tummy before you can consume the vital nutrients like protein you need. In saying that, I ate plain oatmeal for breakfast, as an alternative to eggs, once I was into my 4th month post surgery (2/3 of my original weight loss goal lost) - 1 serve was = to 3 or 4 meals. Oatmeal has a lower GI than other carbs, is a whole grain, contains protein & soluble fibre. Steel cut are best as are less processed. Now in maintenance I eat multigrain crackers with hummus & avocado as a snack option. There are plenty of low carb/ no carb options available you can enjoy once down the weight loss path. I love zucchini noodles & last night I had cauliflower & kale rice. You can eat them on your pre surgery keto (no carb) diet. Use this time pre surgery to reassess your eating habits and try new things. Look into keto diet plans for vegetarians to get you started. It’s the start of a new life.
  15. Hi! I’m new to the forums. I am hoping to have WLS this year. Somewhat ironically, I work in Prior Authorizations for a health insurance company, so I’m very familiar with what it means to require auth. However, every company is a bit different. I’m a newlywed and my husband added me to his policy. This was planned as my previous coverage was not as good, and his plan covers bariatric surgery whereas mine did not. So we now have UHC Choice through T-Mobile. I have checked the coverage requirement thoroughly and have a couple concerns: A. They require a 5 year weight history. However my coverage before this has been fairly bare minimum. So I mostly only went to the doctor if absolutely needed. And the eye doctor, who does not weigh. How strict are they on having a five year history? Do I only need a couple weigh ins throughout that time? Or multiple a year etc? Also will they accept photo documentation or a written statement? I mostly gave up on getting help from my PCP’s previously as they’d tell me I “wasn’t trying hard enough” whenever I failed to lose weight. But I just established care with a great PCP in order to get everything checked out/ruled out prior to asking for a referral and recommendation for the surgery. B. I know when I’m ready for a consult etc. I will need to go through UHC Bariatric Resource Services through Optum. What is it like working with them? Do they actually help and guide you as if they’d like for you to get approved? thank you in advance! just to note: My BMI is over 40, and has been at least over 35 my entire adult life. I have attempted weight loss with phentermine multiple times, as well as keto, weight watchers, and CICO. I have hypertension, hyperlipidemia, exertions dyspnea, chronic back problems, and chronic muscle tension. I am active and I do watch what I eat, just fail to lose significant weight. When taking weight loss medications I lose up to 20 lbs, but then regain as soon as I go off the med even when sustaining my same lifestyle.
  16. YUM YUM YUM. I've recently admitted that cookies (and ice cream) are my kryptonite. So I love me some low-carb cookie recipes. Now gotta go out and find some tapioca flour and try these out...thanks! Edited to add: just did a quick google on tapioca flour and learned its not so very keto-friendly. Found suggestions to replace with almond flour 1:1 (or xanthan gum). Sooooo...no need to wait to go shopping for the tapioca flour! Going to make these this afternoon

    Should I be “excited?”

I am both nervous and excited. I have always been, at the very least, chubby. Like you, I have always settled for being 'less fat', rather than going for thin, or even in-shape. My weight has gone up and down (with a focus on going up) ever since I can remember and I never thought this surgery or being thin was something that would ever happen to 'me'. I have gotten used to being 'the fat friend', to having to wear certain things because of how I feel about my body, and having to even filter how I speak in public because of my insecurity. Learning how to mindfully eat and use food for fuel, rather than to fill a temporary emotional void, will, no doubt, be hard, but the mental struggle of getting that fat girl mentality out of my head once I actually achieve my goal is a whole other story, I imagine.. I've been on the keto diet myself (pre-op) and it has helped a lot with helping me focus on protein while being mindful of my fat and carb intake. Still, its not always easy. I am someone who loves to cook and am constantly looking up recipes, or seeing them pop up in my timeline on Facebook, and I can't tell you how many times I have thought about what I could make from the unhealthy choices real quick. I haven't though. And I honestly think its because of these forums. Use the tool your doctors have given you to lose the weight, and use these forums for the support you need to keep you going. Track everything! You got this! ♥

  20. Fats. Fat has more cal per gram than both protein and carbs (9 vs 4) And for most fat doesn't trigger cravings, instead suppressing hunger which is why Keto is such a booming lifestyle. Honestly each macro nutrient has it's merits and purpose for optimal health which is why food fit for human consumption contain them. I think water & alcohol are the exceptions (real geniuses correct me if I'm wrong ❤) As you move towards maintenance more research is warranted to decide what your long-term lifestyle will look like. Here's a research journal to consider (oh and I'm sure you'll find plenty on either side of the argument) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/14672862/

    Food Database?

Keto calculator, macro calculator, digital food Journal, MyFitnessPal, Baritastic, etc But you may have to write things out until you have a handle on it
  22. BoredFatGirl

    Food Database?

I am wondering if there is a food database where I can input specific restrictions on certain macros to find something that will work with my diet. For instance, I am currently on the keto diet and I managed to hit my limit of carbs and and am way over my allowed fat for the day (damn you, IKEA meatballs and Oreo eggs 🤬), but I don't have enough protein! Normally I eat the same thing everyday because it's easier since I know everything is being met. However, on days like today, I am struggling to find something that isn't going to add more carbs and fat to what I've already managed to shove into my body. So, anyone know of a database where this information could be found? I get that brands vary, but it would at least point me in the right direction (and I am getting a little tired of protein shake, tuna, and yogurt everyday 😅).

    ***READ THIS***

Nope. I was 100% faithful and I think that is why I have done so well. My doctor scared me at the workshop last summer. He said he had opened someone up the week before and didn’t do the surgery because their liver had not shrunk.... that’s why he does a keto liquid diet. I. Was. Terrified. He also said he has had to do emergency surgery on someone who had an obstruction 3 days post op.... they are PIZZA! Seriously? Anyway.... you will feel better if you follow your doctors advice. oh and WALK AS SOON AS YOU CAN. I can’t emphasize that enough.

I am also insulin resistant and I have PCOS. so I defiantly have to watch my carb intake. But I love chicken fish broccoli spinach salad with lemon. Etc. when I was younger I didn’t notice that all the bs carbs I was eating was not good for me and I was on the Fast track To obesity and addiction. I can drop my weight and I do by myself but I always always always crave sugar and fight my growling tummy. So after I had my baby I immediately got to work on the VSG surgery. Knowing my BMI would be high enough to qualify for surgery. I have the tools cause I have done it for years. But I wanted a little help. And I could never get below 200. So I am hoping to do this with the sleeve tool. But I totally understand what ur saying. I don’t eat keto but I watch all my intakes. And I make healthy choice. I do not eat pasta ( I am Italian and my family looks at me with disgust every family dinner) i never have drank soda or ate chips etc. because of pcos and I know it will pack on me. My hugest weight ever was 336! It was when I was a lot younger before I found out about pcos and insulin resistance. Then I controlled my weight at 240 for years. Got pregnant with baby 3 and decided this is my golden time weight was 275. And I qualified. I am so happy to have this tool to help me.

Yes I totally agree I will not eat sugar free or keto. I will eat healthy and Whole Foods. I will focus on portion size for the rest of my life. I don’t even do sugar free now. I just can’t handle the artificial sweeteners or the sugar alcohols. I would rather just not have it. If I want something sweet I will eat a piece of organic high quality dark chocolate. Keto is just not realistic for lifetime and I love that my surgeon also doesn’t push us to go keto. He just makes it simple and straight forward like dr v. He says eat healthy if not then gain ur weight again. It’s simple. We have the tool we can either use or abuse it. A lot of the diet plans and eating plans r made by the nutritionist. My surgeon told me he has a small day in it. But he is just too busy with surgery and after care that he can’t focus on it.
