No plication - I got the sleeve. I decided against the plication because it was too new. Finding this forum was a big help in making my decision. For a long time I thought I had no options - all I knew was that my band had to go and I was terrified of gaining weight after it was gone. Lots of research and finding Dr. Aceves convinced me that VSG was the way to go. He has the most experience with lap-band to sleeve revisions. I wanted to make sure I went to someone who would know how to deal with my possible complications. Of course, your mileage may vary... :-)

Now That You Have Had The Surgury, What Negatives Have You Experienced Thus Far?
VWalker replied to marketingdude's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After two dialtions of the esophagus due to band slipping and a replacement of the port due to my body encapsulating the port with scar tissue and not being able to make adjustments my band was removed yesterday, July 5, 2012. Hopefully my insurance will approve a revision to bypass. I had lost around 87 lbs when all this started and was very please with the band. I still need to lose another 100 lbs though so wish me luck. I guess the admins should delete my account not that I no longer have the band. Good luck to you all and if you do what your doctor tells you, you will lose the weight! -

Revision from Lap-band to gastric sleeve.
GingerSlim replied to Alex_1990!'s topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I got sleeved 5 years ago and had terrible reflux/GERD every single day since. My esophagus is a mess! Doctor said RNY bypass is the way to go & I’m having revision on Monday. Doctor said that every single patient he did revision to RNY for bypass for no longer suffered from reflux. I’ll let you know how it goes, but don’t jump the gun and get the sleeve. -

Yup...Want to know why you want the surgery so they can make sure it's for the right reasons such as health, more mobility, less aches and pains etc vs because you want to get a boyfriend/girlfriend, become popular etc. They do make sure you don't have an eating disorder, want to make sure you realize it's a life long decision and they want you to know you can call on them for any questions you have afterwards. They help make sure you're in the best mindset for the surgery and have realistic goals. I really liked my therapist and only had to see her for two required visits. I had started seeing a therapist who deals with food issues outside of the bariatric center before I even started with them just to make sure I have the tools I need to make the right decisions eating wise and dealing with the head hungry issues. But then again I've gone the bariatric route before with my lapband so I knew already that I wanted to make sure I had the help with this more permanent change. My lapband had to be removed after it prolapsed really badly - I had already had it revised once before. So having gained almost all my weight back I knew I wanted the help to keep me on the right track after this surgery as well. It's been a great help. There are a lot of great books that help too. Good luck with your appointments -
I was converted on Monday, 11/5/18; sleeve to bypass due to GERDS. I don't have too much advice because I'm newly revised. I can say everybody experience is different. I woke up with a lot of gas pain. Gas X helped a lot. I was up and walking the same day. The hospital staff managed my pain very well. I still have a little pain on the left side of my stomach. It feels more like a pulled muscle now, than it does pain. ScorpioC_RnY

So I'm not at goal yet but I'm having the extra skin on my stomach removed because it's giving me so much trouble. The surgeon said mine will be one of the largest he's done. My surgery is June 5th. I'm so nervous because it will be a 5 hour surgery and they had trouble waking me up from my sleeve surgery which was shorter. I woke up with the breathing tube in. Also he told me I have a higher chance of infection and wound complication because of my past history and some meds I'm on. It will be a 70 cm incision. I have to stop 2 of my psoriasis meds which also scares me. My psoriasis is pretty severe when not medicated. Even when medicated I can have our breaks. 3 times in my life, and each time worse than the last, I've ended up in the hospital with a really bad out break where basically all my skin comes off. Even with all these things I feel like I NEED this surgery to improve my quality of life. I'm almost down 260 pounds from my highest of 540 and my extra skin is pretty bad already. I can't do any of the other surgeries until I reach goal but this is one I can do part way. He's explained that I may need a revision tummy tuck when I reach goal since I'm still a little less than 100 pounds away from goal. Insurance approved coverage first try though which gives you an idea of how bad it is. I'm just nervous and excited at the same time. Has anyone had this surgery? What was your recovery like? What were your results? I don't do well with surgery generally. After the sleeve surgery I was kept 5 days instead of 2 and was in pain for 3 weeks. After my gallbladder removal I was readmitted to the hospital due to pain. They told me I wouldn't be able to save my belly button. So now I get to tell people I am an alien or was created in a lab..which I'm kind of looking forward to. Lol I'm so nervous but also so hopeful this will help...

Im still having complications with my tummy tuck any suggestions. My insicion is still open. Waiting on insurance to notify me of a revision. Any suggestions on a great plastic surgeon for a belt lipectomy

I have been banded 3 years. I am considering a tubal ligation revision to have a baby. It would put me roughly at 44 to get pregnant. Has anyone had a successful pregnancy at that age? I am so concerned of down syndrome and other defects.

Bypass was never a consideration for me. Too radical, I felt. Sleeve wasn't offered, as far as I knew when I had mine done. I'm extremely happy I chose the band, but today, I'd want to consider adding plication. Consider, being the key word. Theres another thread on here today from a longer term bandster, whos considering surgery revision, to add plication, with his surgeons advice. Maybe check out that thread for additional info/suggestions. Best of luck in your decision. -

Where in Florida are you? I'm in Miami/Aventura. I'm hopefully getting a revision from band to either VSG or RNY (probably RNY), but I'm still trying to find a good surgeon. -
There are so many points of view on this topic written by physicians. The best thing you can do is not freak out but follow the plan. Stay away from carbonation and eating and drinking together as well as overeating. In the beginning it is difficult to overeat because your body will simply cause you to vomit, in the future you are more apt to push yourself further because something tastes good. We all do it once in a while but it is not good and if you do it all the time for every meal it can become a big problem. Many times people who have had revision from bypass to bypass again it's because they did not follow the plan, learned to eat around or overeat consistently. They did not follow the rules thereby causing them to gain their weight back, they will blame it on a stretched pouch but that likely is not the reason for the revision. To eat around you have to be grazing....eating small quantities all day. I have done it once or twice and boy do I regret it when I do. It's usually a holiday and I immediately get back on the plan.

Mary Ann- Hi I too had a gradual slippage. It was long and gruel. Got to the point I could barely keep water down. My mind knew hello something is wrong but the scale was reading 125! For me I always was chubby/big so to see the scale say 125 I thought I was in heaven. Let me tell you that was insane. I jeopardized my health. I had a huge unfill so I could get healthy enought to have the revision surgery 1.5 months after the unfill. I went from 125 to 139 in that time. Surgery was 139...that was a great weight for me. That too never stayed I went to 149 since 17 Mar 06. Now just a week ago I promised myself this time I will be healthy and do this right! But I have gained 10 lbs since surgery. Why because I do not have restriction before correction I could barely eat a few bites of food. Now I can eat bread, pasta where before I could not eat that stuff for years. This has been my experience. Am keeping a journal in hopes it will make me see what is going on. I go next Monday for a fill..I can't wait. Dody

FDA: The Low-Carb Diet Is 'Sheer Nonsense' - The Common Voice
Corliss replied to Alex Brecher's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
So many people prefer not to be bothered with evidence to the contrary of what they believe and hold dear. Like any diet the Atkins will not work if you don't do it. There are loads of people on my Low Carb lists through Yahoo that are maintaining for years after loosing 50 plus pounds with Atkins without a lap band. I personally am not one who can maintain, but lets see, I didn't maintain with weight watchers, nutri system or diet pills either. I even gained wt on the mediteranian diet as much as I loved it! I have the band to minimize the damage that I do when I am not making good choices whether they be bandster reccomendations, OA food plan, Low Carb food plan or Weight Watchers. I find that the Atkins way of eating which is very similiar to the OA grey sheet to be really effective for wt loss. I think all of us who are in need of a band, just muddle through this the best that we can, but many would like to see ourselves as successful dieters and hold our own diets as better than someone elses, where the truth is the band is the key! Very few here would be successful in keeping it off if not for our tool. I know of only one person on all the boards I am on who has successfully kept her wt. off after band removal, without some revision to another surgery. She is the exception. I personally have experienced a band loss and I am in touch with dozens of others who have and we all experienced wt gain with that one happy exception. Atkins can do wonders for dropping a significant amount quickly and I am all for using it if it works for you. If not, why whine and get nasty about it....if you don't want to do it then for goodness sake, don't do it, but stop the yaya! Corliss -
Looking For Advice...i'm Too New On My Journey To Be Having These Troubles Already...
libra8302 posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi all, In a nutshell, I'm so discouraged by my band... Let's begin by saying that I was banded on 5/4/12 initially. My preop diet went great...I lost 14 pounds in those 2 weeks doing the Optifast diet per my surgeon. Postop was also fine...no initial complications except that I've never felt the "restriction" like my doc says I should. My doctor wants all his patients to only be able to eat 3-4 ounces per meal. Understandable, assuming my band would actually work. I've lost count of the fills I've had...I think I'm up to about 5 since my surgery. With each fill, I only feel restriction for the first 72 hours at best...after that, nothing. Needless to say, I am so frustrated. An the real kicker is that on 10/12/12, I had to have a revision done because my port flipped, but according to my doc, my band was fine. The most weight I've lost was 51 pounds...now I'm at 43 pounds. I've got 108 pounds to goal weight and I feel like I'll never get there because I'm just yo-yoing right now. Has anyone else felt this way? If so, what did you do? I want to get my records and go elsewhere for a second opinion. In my case, I selected a doctor that is 50 miles from my house because I thought he was the best one for me...but his idea of coming in every 3 weeks for more "fills" that cost me a $25 copay and $20 in gas each time is not fesible. In addition, I just started working nights as a Nurse Tech...since doing so, I seem to be holding on to more weight even though I'm being run ragged. Since I've already had one issue with my band and feel like it's leaking, I want to revise to the sleeve, but I am so hesitant that it would even work. Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all! -
Considering Revision - some questions
JanetNBama replied to lillian.b.white's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm in the midst of scheduling my band to sleeve revision. My band was paid by the insurance company but they will only pay for one weight loss surgery in a lifetime (BCBS of AL). My surgeon is going to remove my band at no cost since he was the one that put it in, but I have to self pay for the sleeve and the hospital/anesthesia since the hospital considers it two surgeries - (not sure how being under for one surgery is charging for two surgeries - unless the length of time I am under is what is considered). Anyway - I am a little nervous about 'failing' the sleeve like I did the band. I lost about 90 lbs with the band and gained 60 back. -
Weight Gain After Surgery ?Bougie Size
Last Chance Lil replied to happy1957's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm one of the overeaters/regainers. And yes, four years out from surgery I can eat a hamburger meal or half a pizza. My bougie was a 32 and my surgeon says I am just one of a small percentage for whom the VSG doesn't work. I lost 100lbs and have regained half of that. Now I am faced with revision to a gastric bypass or losing weight conventionally (which I failed at for many years, hence having the VSG!). I wouldn't get too obsessed with the size of the bougie and weight regain. I know of people who had larger than me and have lost all their weight and kept it off. My surgeon says I may have an over-active stomach which empties faster than normal. But I also have made terrible food choices (lots of junk and sodas with meals) and have problems with binge eating and depression. If you stay focused on the sleeve's needs and how to make it work, you'll be fine. It's so successful for most people. I just wasn't one of them. -
Hoping it's temporary? Try to get back to the newbie mindset. Pretend you were just banded and have the post op protocol. Liquids, then transition to soft foods then regular foods. Are you going to get fluid back in eventually or look into a revision? Why did you have an unfill? Good luck. I've heard that it's a difficult time but NOT impossible to stay on track after an unfill.

I just had to have 2.2 taken out of my band and I'm really concerned because now I feel there is no restriction. I was at 9.5 and doing really well. Started to feel like my portions were getting a little too big so I went in this past Friday and got .5 which proved a bit too much as I had trouble swallowing the Water they gave me so .2 came out and that seemed to be ok...while I was on liquid and mush food. As soon as I ate solid food on Monday I had acid reflux and chest pains. So back I went yesterday. She took out the 2.2...or rather it came out on it's own she said I was very irritated (the band I guess). So this puts me I guess around 7.6. I'm scared. I don't want to start gaining again. I did have it in my mind to follow the post op plan - liquids to mushy to solid over the next week and then be able to go back in and get filled again. I've not done as well I've been doing since I first had my band in 2009! I never lost more than 50lbs. I gained 20 or so back when I didn't have insurance and couldn't get fills. I finally get on a roll and BAM. I was also considering revision from band to sleeve. I think I will move forward with that. If the band can't be filled enough to be effective then it's useless to me. Right? I also need to have my gallbladder out apparently. I haven't really had a bad attack but they did an ultrasound of it and the Doctor said it would have to come out eventually. I'd rather get it all done at once...which is why I have been waiting trying to decide if I want to try for the revision. I have to go through the program (6 weeks) and THEN my insurance may or may not cover it. I also have to spend $300+ to go through the program. But maybe it's worth trying.

Dr. Aceves in Mexicali
nightingale2u replied to rachel marie's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hi Rachel... Congrats on your surgery going so well and that you had such a good experience with Dr. Aceves and his staff! I love hearing the experiences that others are having with Dr. Aceves as I will be there April 1st for a revision from the Lap Band (Be really happy with your decision not to be banded) to the Vertical Gastric Sleeve. I am scared silly but hearing your experience eases my mind. Wishing you a speedy recovery! Darcy -
Everyone is most definitely different....im on "full" liquids...things like yogurts...sugar free puddings...optifast shakes/soups...etc. And the struggle has been real for me. Not eating solids yet and the liquids are filling me up quick. I am only able to take in about 1-2 oz. of liquid and I have to wait 30-60 min. before I can "sip" again. I am definitely not complaining...this is a Gastric Bypass that was revised into a Sleeve. I went out and bought nectar Carribean Breeze Protein mix and the Isopure Protein Watee ...like someone posted earlier they have 40 grams per bottle. Hoping these will help break up the chocolate and carmel shake routines. I wake up sipping....go to sleep sipping...but its hard to get at least 80 grams in per day ....but again Im thankful.

WAS THINKING BAND and NOW VSG?? HELP!!
Jaffa replied to TDELYTE's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a band and my wife a sleeve. One day, I will revise to the sleeve. It is so much easier, so much less worry, and long term so much cheaper. This is a no brainer for anyone that can get the sleeve, they should get it. For people who have insurance that won't pay for the sleeve, but will pay for the band.....I would tell them, to figure out a way to self pay for the sleeve....it is that much better and worth that much more. -
WAS THINKING BAND and NOW VSG?? HELP!!
mountain_lover replied to TDELYTE's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started a year ago wanting to have the Band and ONLY the band. But after going to Dr. Husted's seminar I was not so sure that I wanted to go through all those fills ect... and being stuck with a needle. Then when I got on ObesityHelp.com and on this forum and read alot of the postings I started leaning towards the other procedure that Medicaid would cover called the Duodenal Switch. When I went to my first Doctor appointment on April 1 of last year, Dr. Husted told me that He thought the procedure that would be best for me would be the Sleeve (which is the first part of the Duodenal Switch---without having the intestines cut or rearranged.) But Medicaid did not cover the Sleeve at that time, but he encouraged me that it would possibly be covered in the near future. I found out in November that Medicaid finally would cover the Sleeve and I got the approval and two weeks after my pre-op diet I had my Sleeve done on Dec.2, 2009. Also right before I was to have the surgery done, he told me that he was doing the surgery with only one 2 inch incision instead of the normal 5 incisions. I was his 2nd patient that he performed the new way of doing the sleeve. I did not feel any pain at the incision site, the only pain I had was gas pains from the anethesia and I had bad nausea for 1 week. I have no regrets having the sleeve done. Especially after reading all the posting of so many having a revision done from the Band to the Sleeve. Now I don't have that to worry about. I thank God for working out everything to fall in place for me to have the Sleeve instead of the Band and for leading me to such a great surgeon as Dr. Husted. I am thankful that I had a Doctor with a good reputation and lots of experience with different procedures. I wish all the best to you, whatever decision you make. You are doing what you need to do by researching the different procedures and finding out what your insurance will cover and what it will not. -
Hello all, I was banded the first time in 2006. I had a slip in 2009 and had a realize band implemented. I had complications with the band again and on May 25th was revised from band to RNY. I have to admit, the pain was intense. I am 10 days post op and am back at work and still have pain (though not very severe). I work in an office, so I am sedentary and am not concerned about the pain. I have lost almost 15 pounds being on the liquid diet (now able to eat pudding / yogurt / etc). I am not really sure how to measure my weight loss as I was really not morbidly obese when being revised. I can tell you I was 311 in 2006 when banded. I had dropped to 175 and then after the slip moved up to 240 in 2009 when I had the realize band put in. I was at 214 when I had the revision and am now, basically 200. I would like to be at a fit 175-190, so once the healing is done I plan on hitting the gym again. I am rambling, I know, and am not really being organized with my thoughts. I am just writing as I think about it. I just wanted to document my story and am willing to answer any questions or try to help anyone I can.

OMG! I can still eat so much - HELP
pear425 replied to Mid West's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You always should follow what your surgeon and Nut tell you to do. They are the trained professional. If you trusted them to do your surgery you should trust them with the food stages. Every surgeon has different rules, even though we are having the same procedure. It is their years of training and experience that made them dictate their post op eating plans. My revision surgeon has you go right to purée but my original surgeon 9 years ago had 6 week transition period. Also my Nut is very clear that it is all about protein. We don't count calories in the beginning.
