Don't Hit Yourself in the Head with a Hammer Just Yet
Jachut replied to Tired_Old_Man's topic in Rants & Raves
Yeah, I read about this! How amazing, what an awesome thing that could be if they could just cure drug addiction so simply! And it would certain sort out the obesity that results just from plain bad habits to that that occurs from a true food addiction. I mean a lot of people get fatter over time due to poor food choices and lack of exercise, not from uncontrollable addiction to food. But those are the people that generally lose well without a lap band! If we're here on this forum reading this, we're probably all addicts to some degree. That's the beauty of the band though - maybe we wont all be having revision surgery in 10 years, we'll be lining up to have the band removed and get our heads fixed. -
Connie, Comparing to the time with the band the sleeve is wonderful for me.It took me 3 months to adapt to eating very tiny, very tasty portions of food.I am satisfied and happy.I feel better when I eat very very little. And I have lost 55 pounds even without doing regular exercise (play squash once or twice a week)With the band I had to diet and exercise like a maniac all the time. Not one pound came off by itself. Not one! The band is a bad idea as far as I am concerned,a temporary cure for a permanent problem. Hope you can get your revision approved. xxo

CTman---How was your visit? I met Dr. Erlich when I was in for my GB in October--nice, cute, too. I'm on day 3 of Optifast--not too bad tasting, but the TV food ads sure loom LARGE and everything smells good----hope I lose a good amount to start me off. My insurance required a 6 month process--and the time went by fast, although at first it seemed like forever. Had my preop bloodwork done and saw a friend who had gastric bypass about 3 years ago. She lost close to 200 lbs. and looks great. Told me she can eat whatever she wants and doesn't feel deprived at all--good to hear. 12 days to go!!

I was told it was because you do not get enough fruit and veg in your diet post band and for the first couple of months you lose some of your hair. Not sure who told me that but my friend had the bypass and she only experienced a small amount of hair loss Lauren x

I think it depends on the doctor. My port flipped and I had to have revision surgery. I never saw a bill and didn't pay a dime for it. And, no, I did not have insurance, I was self-pay.

First Official Fill and not doing good!
Nenaquetuhace commented on Nenaquetuhace's blog entry in Blog 62784
To make a long story short 252 lbs at the time of surgery on 9/24/09. First fill scheduled for 11/17 but found that port had flipped. Revision on 1/14/10. My current weight is 218 and I had my first fill on 3/1/10. I have been on liquids since. but barely.. they tried 2cc but it was too tight and took someout so I believe that I have a bit of 1 cc.. and the liquid is so hard to go down.. I am going to try to go on mushies for dinner tonight because I am so starving!! does anyone have any suggestions? Also the protein was too dense to go down as well. -
Question about long-term caloric intake
Mobeans63 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a question about the consequences of long-term low caloric intake. Obviously surgery works because of the drastic reduction in calories, so your body is able to burn its own fat stores for energy. But if you ever done research about low calorie living I'm sure you've heard that if you eat too few calories your body into sort of a "starvation mode" which slows your metabolism--sort of like your body going into self protection...which is precisely why all good diet programs suggest that you actually eat frequent but small meals during the day--obviously closely monitoring calories, carbs, etc. so I guess my question is how do post bypass patients continue living on such reduced calories? As adults we are not designed to live on less than 1000 cal a day over the long term, right? I don't know why but I've been just thinking about this a lot... -
Cost Of Self Pay Lap Band To Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
LilMissDiva Irene replied to carbgrl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm not sure if you'd ever consider this, but since you didn't mention whether or not you would - I had Dr. Aceves in Mexicali in Mexico. He charged $11,250 for my band to sleeve revision and it was quite literally the best 11K I've EVER spent on myself. My life has changed so much for the better, and I thank GOD daily for him and my sleevie. -
Unrealistic Expectations
Chicadee replied to ILKrista's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am hoping that since I am participating from now until the end of May (with surgery tucked in the middle) in the local Corporate Cup healthy team challenge that any weight loss I have I will attribute to that and then when it is over I will say I am continuing to eat right and exercise. There is a woman on the floor I work on and I know she had a bypass years ago and has now gained a bunch of weight back and is struggling. I don't talk to this woman but i know that about her cause people talk too much. -

Is there a Vitamin Guideline?
stcyt replied to friendINdeed's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I dont know, but I imagine that most of the guides are for bypass which has a malabsorption component. Thankfully the sleeve has no malabsorption so you are able to get many vitamines from food. We don't eat a whole lot though, so we need to take a little something to make sure we are getting all we need. I take centrim daily vitamins as well as calcium citrate supplements. Many people take iron, vitamin d, and B12 sublingual as well. If you get a multi make sure it has biotin and zinc to help stave off hair loss. If you go to the Bariatric Advantage website, they have vitamins by procedure. I haven't had my labs yet so I don't know if I'm low on anything, but I feel pretty good. -
Hi! Congrats! Are you nervous? Good luck!! I'm in Livingston county. I got my bypass done at barix clinics in Ypsilanti. Wishing you a super speedy recovery!!

No, the vertical band is not the same as the sleeve. See this site on vertical banding: It's kind of a cross between banding and stapling. I'm on ChampVA and they don't cover sleeve, either, even though Medicare does - takes time for Congress to make any changes to the plans (go figure!!). Lapband and bypass and VGB are the only options. I don't think they do the band with plication, either but I'm not sure.

Why did you choose the Sleeve over the Bypass
VSGAnn2014 replied to Pinkgirl1234's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I know a lot of people from these forums who started at your size and have lost all their excess weight -- if that's what you're worried about. I also know a lot of people from these forums who started at your size and lost down to around 200. And, of course, some people are so uncompliant after WLS that they don't lose much or quickly regain their weight loss. I expect there are many reasons why people don't reach their goal weights, most of which boil down to their not being "compliant enough" post-op. However, there are surely others for whom losing weight after WLS just doesn't work as well as for others, no matter how compliant they are. I know people who are compliant as all get out, but for whom weight loss is just a lot slower than for others -- and I can't tell what the differences between them and me are. Other factors that should go into your decision about which WLS to choose are the specific comorbidities and diseases you suffer from, e.g., diabetes, autoimmune diseases, etc., and the medicines you have to take for those. As you probably know, nutritional and Rx malabsorption problems are greater after bypass surgery than after sleeve surgery. -
I've been in a 6 week stall (8 weeks post op), curious as to the longest stall anyone has had. Revision 1/31/13 by Dr Cabrera and Venezuela in MX

Welcome, Kimber! You'll find quite a few people who have had or are planning sleeve-to-RNY revision surgeries. Hopefully you'll click with some folks following your same path!

Congratulations to everyone that was approved. I have Aetna and was denied. the denial was uphelp in the first and second level appeal by Aetna. It was so stressful. The final appeal is an independent external review process. This is where the decision goes out to an independent doctor not associated with the insurance company who will decide based upon the information provided if the patient meets the standards published by NIH and other medical groups. Mine did and the decision by Aetna was overturned. The entire process took almost 10 months and was SO stressful. All of my appeals were done with the help of http://www.obesitylaw.com It cost me nothing and Kelley is the BEST !! She called me 2 days before I was going to Disney to tell me the good news. She even offered to give me passes to Disneyland that they use to take out the employees in the office each year. Unfortunately I was going to Disney World in FL so I couldn't use the passes. She was so nice I decided I would tell everyone who was having issues with approval about them. They provide an awesome service to people who could really use help. I believe her husband Walter had both Gastric bypass and a Lapband revision later on. Good Luck to anyone having to deal with Aetna.

I don't know what to do! Help please
Cupcake replied to AWD12368's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi you must work with your surgeon and do whats best for you my surgeon would not even consider the band and very few doctors would or insurance covers it because of complications , I would think about what is best for you and how much weight you want to loose and the success rate of all. I had no complications and very little pain. I would research everything and work with my surgeon to make the best decision, you should ask your surgeon as well as yourself why he choose the bypass over the band. Good luck. -

I had the band in 2008 and lost all my weight.. In April 2014 I found out it has eroded.. I had a revision from band to bypass on May 21 2014. It is awesome! I wish I had the bypass first! It is awesome. I have had no problems. I'm at a normal BMI. Feel free to message me if you have any questions. -
I don't know what to do! Help please
innwtitdtity replied to AWD12368's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the band put in in 2008 and I just received my date for bypass next Tuesday. My first surgeon only did bands and my current surgeon only did bypass (at that time). Today, my original surgeon is also doing sleeves and my new surgeon is doing sleeves and bypass. I agree with the others, do research. In 2008 I was afraid of bypass but I think that was because I did not do research. My band slipped 5 times and I rarely ever felt the "full" sensation when eating. I am 48 and my joints really hurt-I need a tool that will hold me accountable and I think the bypass is it. I don't have any other comorbidities but I am afraid I will if I don't get myself together soon. Being over weight sucks but it can be fixed with the right attitude and support team. Good luck in whichever choice you make. -
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy or Gastric Bypass for 100+ weight loss
LilMissDiva Irene replied to cindyvirden.com's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The VSG is a fabulous tool if you don't have any pre-operative issues such as diabetes or gastric reflux disease. It in my opinion works just as good as the bypass (and I'm revising to bypass soon due to GERD) as long as you stick to the post op plan. Take a list of all of the pros and cons of both and whichever ones mean the most to you place more emphasis on. Good luck with your decision. -

cindyvirden.com posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am meeting with surgeon in a couple weeks and we are discussing the sleeve verses bypass. I am 50 years old, no other health concerns except my knees are bad from my extra weight and the obvious.. I am overweight scratch that obese : ) So for those of you who have had bypass I was wondering if you would now have considered the sleeve or visa versa. THANK YOU ahead of time as I am a newbie. Life-Time Fatties - Achieved Your Weight Loss Goals?
MeganA replied to kim2bhealthy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I think it's all a matter of perspective and expectation. I, too, was worried that I wouldn't ever lose weight- that I'd fail with the band like I did with everything else...well, that's just not the case if you follow the rules and do your research. Sure, it takes a while to lose with the band, but so what? Because I have been overweight my whole life, I also tried to set some realistic expectations. I know I will never be a size 8 unless I get deathly ill or have the gastric bypass. Neither of those options sound like a good idea- so I decided that if I ever got to be a size 18/20 (from a 30/32) I'd concider myself a success. Well, here I am! Some people start their banding journey where I am now, but I have the rest of my life to chip away at the rest of my weight if I want. I don't know if this helped or not...best of luck to you! Megan
